The Lisbon hipster atmosphere.
When night falls, Lisbon's youngsters move to Barrio Alto seeking chilled Sagres and vibrant nightlife. Besides its nightlife, this neighbourhood has become a hotspot for hipster shopping sprees. As befits a night owl and bohemian neighbourhood, you will not find big brands but as regards sneakers almost fetishist footwear for many - you'll stumble upon Vans and Fred Perry stores. In general, its graffiti and street art covered streets are mainly lined with thrift and vintage stores. As these change frequently, our advice is to walk up and down Rua da Barroca and Rua da Norte and scan their windows at your leisure. If you feel tired, there will be no shortage of sites for you to take a break and cool off.

Two for one.
You cannot leave Lisbon without visiting the Jeronimos Monastery, a masterpiece of Manueline style which reflects all the splendour of the Age of Discoveries. As you arrive, we recommend you spend at least one hour at this historic collection in the same building - just killing two birds with one stone. Located in the west wing of the monastery, it showcases Mesolithic stones, Egyptian mummies, jewellery forged by the Visigoths and a great collection of funerary art including statues, masks, graves, talimanes, mummies, hieroglyphics ... even mummified crocodiles! Lisbon Cathedral
It first appears like a medieval fortress but its rosette and ribbed vaulting tell otherwise. Perfect at sunset!
Lisbon's symbol
Even if the Sé is one of the city icons, inattentive travellers may confuse it with a tower of St. George Castle. This is understandable as it has more the appearance of a medieval fortress than that of a proud cathedral overlooking the sea. Interestingly enough, a mosque stood there until Christians took back the city in 1150. Despite its massive appearance, its tower accommodates a magnificent rose window that illuminates the main nave and riveted vault. Therefore, it is appropriate to visit this monument at sunset, when the light is warmer and more inviting to peace and meditation. Furthermore, the tourist hustle and bustle has typically subsided at that time, allowing optimal appreciation of one of the oldest buildings in the city. Do not skip the cloister where you can admire millenary archaeological remains or its treasure with religious gemstones (of inestimable value; the entry fee, however, is 2.50 Euro).

Kiss Saudade goodbye! (nostalgic longing)
As a city, Lisbon is famous for Saudade, the Portuguese national sentiment, a mixture of melancholy and nostalgia for better times. However, there is a place in the city where this longing all but gives way to night pleasures and entertainment: Barrio Alto. During daytime, this maze of narrow streets draws barely any attention. However, as the day progresses, the neighbourhood comes to life and its fashionable shopping (vintage clothing abounds, tattoo places, etc.) venues open for foreigners to reveal Lisbon's neatly underground side. At night, the district becomes seriously busy and exciting led by the bar-hopping youth. While joints come in all styles and cater to all travellers, there is no doubt that Rua da Barroca and Rua de Norte hold their claim to fame. There, the night stretches endlessly between mojito and caipirinha, yet another propitious witness to Portugal's special relationship with its former colony Brazil.
Luvaria Ulisses
Need a good pair of gloves? You've found the perfect store, you'll find hundreds of varieties!
Save your hands.
Inaugurated in 1928 by Rodrigues Simoes, Luvaria Ulisses is one of the most famous shops in Lisbon and probably the only one in Portugal specializing in gloves. As it opened its doors in the rickety Muralha do Carmo, Chiado district was not yet the popular and elegant shopping area it was poised to become. Thus, Mr Simoes can be rightly considered a pioneer. Amazingly enough, the store's interior and its delicate Art Deco facade featuring the famous golden hand have remained the same ever since. In fact, it seems as if time stood still for it: its products are still completely handmade and the way in which the shop assistant helps customers try out the gloves - with talcum powder - is reminiscent of a long gone era. Now, who needs time travel with places like this?
Fabrico Infinito
Such a place defies definition. Swing by and you'll understand!
Unclassifiable style.
There are shops that defy definition as the items they carry cannot be easily classified. That would be the case of Fabrico Infinito (Rua Dom Pedro V, 74), which could be defined as a furniture store were it not for its offering of existentialist books or ultra-stylish fashion magazines. As the Brazilian designer Marcela Brunken landed in Lisbon in 2007, she created this multidisciplinary space that has become one of the top spots for aesthete travellers. Besides enjoying its fine wooden furniture, you can go out and sit in its cosy garden for a coffee with a Belém cake. You will surely notice the coolness of its offering but also that of the store's clientele, usually distilling modernity and good taste. A few steps further is the Pavilhão Chinês (Rua Dom Pedro V, 89), one of the most charming cafes of the city for its decoration.
Librería Bertrand (Bertrand bookshop)
The traditional library, where dusty books fall into the hands of curious readers, eager flicking through their potential purchases.
Book quest.
In a city where literary cafes have had so much prominence, it is not surprising that bookstores abound. Despite the rise of e-readers and tablets, there are still many traditional bookstores for that romantic reader attached to paper. Bertrand is a reference venue, where you can find any book no matter how obscure its author or theme. This surely explains why the store opens branches throughout the country. If you forgot to bring reading, swing by and you will find a wide variety in different languages. The original site of the humble bookstore was at Rua de Loreto but, after its total destruction upon the 1775 earthquake, it reopened on busy Rua Garrett, in Chiado. Feira da Ladra
Pedigree, vintage and bargaining in Lisbon's most important flea market: Portobello and El Rastro are its namesakes.
Historic market.
In London, you can dig for hours among the stalls in Portobello whereas Madrid's Rastro offers endless retro gems. Lisbon's flea market is the Feira da Ladra, held on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9:00 to 18:00 at the Santa Clara field, in the Alfama district. Some claim it was so named (ladra = thief) because of stolen item trafficking it used to see. Today, however, you can find is endless gadgets of all kinds: from typically Portuguese tablecloth to watches worth of auctions to bizarre vases, old vinyl records and cassettes of fados and other Portuguese groups. If you are set on going, try to get up early because it works on a first-come-first-served basis and interesting items are gone in minutes. Finally, if not exactly a bazaar, haggle away with its vendors to get the best deal - that's what they'd expect.
A vida portuguesa
The past blends with the present in this particular store ... lose yourself in it and find your item!
Retro Portugal.
Vintage is in. In troubled times, it is comforting to look back in time. This may well explain the success of A vida portuguesa (Rua Anchietta, 11), one of the most famous shops in Lisbon since it opened a few years ago. The shop sells typical Portuguese products but always with a retro feel. For example, traditional sardine cans have been (re) designed by young artists by mixing past and modernity in their colourful and cheerful packaging. Forget the famous Portuguese tablecloths and let yourself be tempted by its cosmetics and cleaning products, which are absolutely ecological and environmentally friendly. Even if you don't feel like buying, pay it a visit to experience a grocery store of the 40s or 50s. Of course, the venue's soundtrack is ad hoc and sweet and soft fados are always on the air.
Moda lusa (Portuguese fashion)

Portuguese Fashion
Portuguese design is tremendously appreciated throughout the world and, although it may not have reached its well-deserved fame concerning fashion, it does have important designers like Alexandra Moura. This fashion designer has a shop on Rua Dom Pedro V, 77 where you can admire her taste for perfectly delineated patterns that have paraded on international catwalks. Precisely on this street and its surroundings, you can find interesting boutiques such as Kolovrat (number 79), with a very Scandinavian-like fashion. In the area, we also find Akira (Calçada do Combro, 8), as well as brands like Stella McCartney or Kazuki for a fairly reasonable price. We advise you not to skip any windows as the next deal or must-have item could be just around the corner.
Avenida da Liberdade
The most desirable luxury shops coexist with Belle Époque mansions and details in the longest Lisbon's avenue.
Shopping with class.
Lisbon's golden mile is the Avenida da Liberdade, a lengthy avenue created after the earthquake of 1755 by the Marquis of Pombal and that splits Baixa in two. This elegant seaside promenade, flanked by bourgeois mansions and aristocratic buildings, is the perfect venue for upscale shopping where all luxury brands line up for your enjoyment. High-carat jewelleries and brands such as Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton and Carolina Herrera alternate along this highly coveted street. This is your place if you are seriously into fashionista shopping. By walking the promenade end to end, you will surely catch a glimpse of its belle époque flair that, despite the office towers now taking the place of fine buildings, takes you back to its golden age with its 20s stands or the Art Deco facade of the Tivoli movie theatre.

It wasn't only one of the founders of the most charismatic nightclub in the city but also started Bica do sapato (www.bicadosapato.com), one of the coolest restaurants in town. The star of Dangerous Liaisons owns this modern restaurant located in an old warehouse near the docks. Apart from its extensive wine list and its famous owner, this restaurant is increasingly appreciated by its sushi bar. Sushi and sashimi platters, noodles, tempura, gunkan rolls, ...and many more pan-Asian specialties are served. It is advisable to book before you go as the wait time can exceed 40 minutes. This, however, does not usually deter its fashionista clientele since the venue is the perfect place to see and be seen. If possible, sit on the terrace and eat while watching the slow flow of the Tagus, a treat for the senses. Also, be sure to take a look at their exhibits, sometimes the restaurant walls showcase extremely interesting artwork.

Historical venue.
Founded in 1936, this restaurant has become one of the classics of the city in its own right. Indeed, it is a safe bet for visitors seeking premium seafood and fresh fish. That humble tavern at the start of Rua Eugenio dos Santos has become a place where you can taste traditional dishes like Rodaballo (Turbot) à Marinheiro or a seafood platter grilled on its fireplace, which operates only in winter. The outstanding service tells of the professionalism and savoir-faire of the place, which also offers a great dessert menu. Without doubt, the most spectacular among therein is the Gambrinus crepe, which they will flamblé for you in the dining room. Of course, prices are in line with a menu that includes Atlantic lobster among its suggestions. This is surely a good place to treat yourself. And don't forget to admire its magnificent views.
To Brazilian
Lisbon citizen will never have a coffee in a hurry and running: having a coffee is a well-ceremonious pleasure for them.
Coffee, an institution.
For the people of Lisbon, as for the Romans, drinking coffee is almost a ceremony. The attentive traveler will realize that there are hardly any foreign coffee chains and this is because our neighbors boast of having some of the best coffee in the world thanks to their colonial ties with South America. Therefore, do not be in a hurry when you sit in a cafeteria, rest for a few minutes and breathe in its aroma, you will notice the reason for this coffee devotion. There are many famous cafes in Lisbon but none have the tradition of A Brasileira (Rua Garrett, 120), the place where it was easy to meet Pessoa on its terrace; in fact, it has a very popular statue. Famous for its literary gatherings, this beautiful venue founded in 1910 has a splendid Art Deco façade and a terrace in the heart of Chiado from which to watch the frenetic life of the city. Its interior, which maintains its classicist ornamentation, will transport you to those days when intellectuals talked while drinking their beloved coffee.
Confeitaria Nacional
The oldest bakery in the city smells of Bolos rei and tastes of almond and macarons. Simply delicious!
Cakes with character.
Beyond the famous Belem cakes, Portuguese pastry-making has much to offer the sweet-tooth visitor including, for example, a typical city delicacy: bolos de arroz (a kind of elongated and extremely fluffy muffin). If you're taking a walk through the Baixa, your nostrils may be treated to the delicious aroma of the National Confitaria (Praça da Figueira, 18), the oldest bakery in town. Founded in 1829 by Baltazar Ruiz Castanheiro, it has belonged to the family for five generations. The frenchified venue is a treat for aesthetes, with old desks that have seduced gourmets for over a century and its traditional recipes, which have remained essentially the same since its early days. Even if its offering includes splendid Sacher cakes or macaroons, its specialties are Bolos rei (a sponge cake similar to the King's cake, popular at Christmas), egg or almond bolinhos and coffee pastries. Brazilian influence.
The picanha is one of the most popular Brazilian and - given the cultural ties held for years - Portuguese dishes. It is a mixture of several kinds of meat cuts, rather on the tender side, cooked on a grill and served with sides of potatoes, salad, rice, or beans. A power-supplement specialty for the weary traveller. Perhaps the best place to taste this specialty is restaurant Picanha (Rua Janelas Verdes, 96). In addition to its meat offering, Picanha serves other tropical fruit platters to transport you to the other side of the Atlantic, listening to samba instead of fado. Its closeness to major tourist sites such as the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga makes it an extremely busy venue all-year round. Take our advice: go for a pleasant walk with the Atlantic breeze in your face after the meat feast.

Thoroughbred.
There are secret places one would like to keep as such to preserve their magic. Generosity, however, leads us to recommend Oh Caldas! (Rua de Sao Mamede, S / n), a venue barely touched by tourist crowds. The clientele of this restaurant, oddly - given Portuguese early bird habits- open until late at night, consists of students, police and neighbourhood residents, i.e. people you trust. Its specialties include typically Portuguese dishes like Francesinhas de Porto, meat with cream or Bacalhau à Brás, served without much frills but in generous, tasty portions. A feast for foodies that will stare in utter disbelief - and satisfaction - at the extremely low bill. In addition to their regular menu, they usually have daily specials. Do not be shy, talk to the cook and let her advice you. Your palate and your wallet will thank you.
Chapitó
Enjoy a snack while watching acrobats doing all kinds of tricks.. And this is where the magic of the venue lies.
Eating at the circus.
Gastronomically speaking, Chapitó may not provide anything special to the superb culinary offering of Lisbon. Nevertheless, it is one of the most successful and busy in the city, which is easily explained by the flair of the place: a real circus school where you can eat sandwiches, snacks and local dishes while watching acrobats climb walls. The restaurant sits in the leafy courtyard of the building and has a terrace overlooking the entire city. Needless to say, dinning there with the artfully illuminated Lisbon at your feet is a real romantic treat. If visiting for lunch, you will surely see the artists prepare for the evening (expect an overly hippie atmosphere at all times) performance. Haute cuisine.
Savoury Portuguese stews are surely a good - and tasty - deal at any of Lisbon's taverns. However, if you seek something more edgy at the height of the international culinary temples, the restaurant Feitoria (http://www.restaurantefeitoria.com) is the place to go. Located in the Altis Belém Hotel & Spa, ideally situated on the bank of the river between the Monument of Discoveries and Belem Tower, it boasts a Michelin star. At its kitchen's helm we find chef José Cordeiro, who reinvents traditional tastes closer to today's palates. "In all dishes I prepare, my roots and traditions are always present. I am a big advocate of Portuguese product and not only for its excellent features" he explains in his blog. Treat yourself to some of his unusual proposals such as the lobster sauteed with cashew sauce or marinated mackerel with soy, grapefruit and cilantro. The tasting menu costs 75 € and is a great investment.

Its recipes are as varied as the restaurants where you can treat yourself to this perfect example of Lisbon's cuisine.
The national fish.
No doubt cod fish is Lisbon's national dish and has as many recipes as days in the year. Perhaps the most popular are the Bacalhau à Brás (served in an olive scramble with potato straw and decorated with parsley and black olives) or Bacalhau com natas (baked and with cream). The city is full of places that boast the best cod cooking of the city and nearly all at popular prices. Some of the best options are the classic Espaço Lisboa (Rua da Cozinha Económica, 16-28), located in an old factory from the 50s and converted into a fine dining restaurant; Casa da comida (Travessa das Amoreiras, 1), one of the most traditional restaurants in Lisbon thanks to its traditional cuisine and the beautiful Clara Jardim Restaurant (Campo Martires da Patria, 49), located among wonderful gardens on the outskirts of the city.

Foodies! Mindful of these wonderful and addictive cream puffy pastries ... Order to take-away at Belém pastry!
Secret recipe.
Lisbon is a city for foodies and the crowning glory of its pastries are these puff creations with cream, whose recipe was invented by the nuns of the Monastery of Belém back in the seventeenth century. Hot or cold, you can taste them at the many bakeries in the city. Refrain however from asking for the recipe because it is as secret as Coke's formula. Although always crowded by tourists, the proper place to buy them is the Pasteleria de Belém (Belém Rua, 84-92), where you will leave with boxes of them. Eating this delicious cream made with egg yolks, milk and sugar in the "Secret Chapel" (as its kitchen is called) facing the Atlantic is one of the culinary delights of the city. Be forewarned! These pastries soon become addictive. Fortunately, Lisbon is full of stairs and slopes to lower your calorie count.

Emerging art.
Sensing the artistic pulse of a city takes no doubt a great deal of museums but also swinging by galleries and emerging art centres. This cultural association, headquartered in the Barrio Alto (Rua da Barroca, 59), has become very popular in recent years thanks to new performances and exhibitions of national and international artists. Frequented by a young audience that moves between "gafapastismo" and hipster philosophies, one of its main attractions are its weekend night concerts where underground stars like Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, and Nite Jewel have played. Sip at your gin and tonic in their lovely courtyard (look up and check out the neighbours) while talking art with the local cultural intelligentsia and feeling like a character in a Woody Allen's film. Museo de Oriente (Fart East Museam)
An old cod drying facility in the 40s turned museum to "live and breath Asia"
The result of a historic relationship.
The historical relations or Portugal with its Asian colonies help the country take pride in its collections of Oriental art. In 2008, it showcased the entire artistic legacy of its colonialism with this museum located in a very special place: a cod drying facility remodelled in the 1940s. Architects Joao Luis Carrilho and Rui Francisco authored this beautiful museum whose main assets include Asian masterpieces. It also features an auditorium where plays are represented, as well as spaces for research, seminars and conferences. Among its pieces, we may highlight the famous Ming porcelain, Chinese screens, Vietnamese mediums outfits ... and thus up to 13,000 Asian folk art pieces. Modern and minimalist.
While Lisbon offers fascinating ties with its past glory, it continues to look and move forward as evidenced by the design of its new public works. A good example is this free-access minimalist art centre in Belém park. Inside, the visitor can discover an important collection of contemporary art that will certainly satisfy Pop art lovers thanks to works like the portrait of Judy Garland, by Andy Warhol or the Interior With Restful paintings by Lichtestein. Opened in 2007, we must also highlight works of Magritte, Giorgio de Chirico, Francis Bacon, Jeff Koons, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Paula Rego ... and up to some forty leading artists. Not surprisingly, Christie's auction house valued the entire collection at 316 million Euro. Museo Nacional de Arte Antiguo (Ancient Art National Museum)
Its Baroque façade and the collection of paintings and decorative arts inside are just outstanding. Definitely worth a visit!
Dazzling.
This visit is worth it if only to contemplate the facade of this impressive XVII century Baroque palace located at Rua das Janelas Verdes, 9. The best, however, awaits inside. Its magnificent collection of paintings and decorative arts in Europe and Asia is one of the most beautiful in Portugal. From the age of discovery, its historical treasures includes the Custody of Bethlehem, a gift brought by the explorer Vasco de Gama in one of his expeditions around the world, or the delicate Japanese panels of the sixteenth century whereby the Japanese depicted the arrival of the Portuguese in their island. But the palace of the Counts of Alvor, is also an art gallery exhibiting works by Hieronymus Bosch (The Temptation of St. Anthony), Dürer (St. Jerome), Piero della Francesca (St. Augustine) and a series of canvases (Apostolate) from Zurbarán's workshop. Museo Calouste Gulbenkian (Calouste Gulbenkian Museum)
Multi-faceted artistic legacy of its creator, the Armenian Gulbenkian. The collection is simply delicious.

The museum was named after its creator, the Armenian industrial Calouste Gulbenkian, a wealthy art lover whose bequests left the city an impressive art collection. Opened in 1969, the museum presents two distinct sides: on one side, Eastern classical art and, on the other, an exquisite collection of European art with pieces ranging from the eleventh to the nineteenth century. Stare in awe at masks of Egyptian mummies, delicate Qing Dynasty porcelain and then feel Stendhal's syndrome with paintings by Turner, Manet, Renoir and Degas. Its most precious items are perhaps the paintings of Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Dyck and - not to be missed - the Eternal Spring, one of Rodin's chief works. A one-of-a-kind museum
The most elegant and bourgeois city district is home to one of the most amazing museums in Lisbon. Following the recent conversion of Sao Francisco Convent (Rua Serpa Pinto, 4) by the French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, this space was devoted to contemporary Portuguese art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its modern exhibitions regularly showcase interactive multimedia installations whereas its permanent collection presents works of the most famous Portuguese artists such as Jorge Vieira and José Almada. Interestingly enough, it has a small section dedicated to French sculpture, with Rodin as its major exponent. The Age of Bronze, one of Rodin's masterpieces, is on display. Beyond culture, the museum offers a splendid garden decorated with modern sculptures and excellent views of the city, where you can enjoy a drink in the cool environment. The queen of fado
One cannot visit Lisbon and leave without paying tribute to the queen of fado, Amalia Rodrigues (1920-1999). This legendary fado artist, who emerged from a humble home in the Baixa district and marvelled audiences in New York, Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Moscow, rubbing shoulders with the stars of her time as Imperio Argentina, is without doubt one of the most emblematic figures of Portugal. In 2001, therefore, her house became a museum to honour the woman who gave international visibility to the heart-breaking Portuguese music, with recordings such as the legendary Novo Fado da Several or Ai Mouraria. Located close to the Portuguese Assembly, Rua de Sao Bento, 123, the house showcases her portraits, some of the dresses she wore in famous performances (her colour was black) and you can listen to some of her best-known recordings. A museum in ruins?
The elegant ruins of Convento do Carmo are one of the city's icons. Its pointed arches scraping the sky with no roof to hold bear witness to the devastating earthquake of 1755 that destroyed the lower town. Traces of the early church can be seen today in the main facade, some paintings on the walls of the body and the transept, and in most of its sanctuary. Perhaps its ruinous aspect inspired the authorities to choose it as the location of the Museum of Archaeology. The museum boasts a collection ranging from Roman times to the nineteenth century, with an excellent collection of tombstones. And not surprisingly so, as this temple served as a cemetery - as well as military stables- for a while. Indeed, the history of many of its pieces pales in comparison with the fascinating history of the building that houses them. The best way to get there is through the gateway of the St. Justa Elevator. In spring, be sure to stand in the pleasant plaza that opens up in front of it with its flowery pink trees.

How can you pass on a place that fascinated British poets including Lord Byron himself? Indeed, he drew inspiration from it to write Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. Amalia Rodrigues, the biggest star in this genre, is still revered by the people of Lisbon, who remain thrilled with the beautiful memory of her crystal voice. Nowadays, although authentic figures of her stature rarely appear, many locals are devoted to these profoundly moving songs. The most interesting are in the popular neighbourhood of Alfama, although there is also quality in Barrio Alto or Mouraria. The main attraction within Eduardo VII Park is certainly this greenhouse that houses lush vegetation and proves a real treat for the senses. Opened in 1933, the garden has its own lake surrounded by ferns. Its architect - and painter - Raul Carapinha designed the "estufa" on an ancient basalt quarry where the gardener grew plants to replant Avenida da Liberdade. The best known among them, given its age, is the "Estufa fria", to which an "estufa caliente" and a sweet one were subsequently added. The first occupies 8,100 square meters and is the lushest and greenest. With species brought from China, Australia, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba or the Korean peninsula, it seems as if one wandered through the real jungle. Azaleas and camellias, beautiful as they are, should not stir your melodramatic streak as the ladies going by the same name.

A dip in the beach.
Technically speaking, Lisbon is not a beach town as Barcelona. In fine weather (average temperature in the city is 17 degrees), however, many people take a quick, refreshing dip in the Atlantic as if it were their own urban beach. Furthermore, south of the Tagus begins the Costa Caparica, about 30 miles of stunning beaches that, unfortunately, prove harder to reach than those up north. If you are not driving, we recommend boarding a train at Cais de Sodre to Cascais. Its route is lined with popular beaches (less than half hour from downtown) to which mainly families but also flirting couples or sun tanning athletes flock. Among those beaches on your way, we would recommend Carcavelos or Santo Amaro, perhaps one of the quietest given its small size.

Admittedly, Lisbon's downtown narrow, winding streets, with its steep slopes are not the ideal scenario to bike around the city. Conversely, River Tagus banks offer ideal biking tracks. Exercising is always recommended and even more so if you fall for Portuguese cuisine delicacies. For three years, the bike path marching along river for nearly seven miles has made it very easy to shed off some weight. The road stretches from the Cais de Sodre to Belém, a journey to appreciate how the city is evolving (old warehouses converted into trendy terraces) and adorned with Pessoa poems. Upon reaching Belém, there is a large park to rest your weary bones (full of picnicking families on weekends) and regain strength with one of the typical cakes. There are several bike rental places near the train station such as Bike Iberia (Largo Corpo Santo, 5).

In Lisbon, if one flags down a cab at night, there is no need to know the address of this club because every local knows this is where you will end your night in style. Bear in mind this place has some illustrious Hollywood backing. Founded among other partners by actor John Malkovich, it has been a VIP hotspot and "coolness" reference venue for almost a decade. To start with, its location on the harbour: from its roof you enjoy breath-taking views of the Atlantic and a few shots of its suggestive cocktails (you must try its caipirovska) turn up the excitement before taking to the dance floor. Hold on tight...curves ahead! Lisbon and San Francisco have a lot in common: the 25th of April bridge - also known as Lisbon's Golden Gate -, their trams and the hills all around the city which make a little push necessary for locals. Of all trams running through the city, number 28 is certainly the most charismatic and iconic. Why so? Simple enough. It travels from one hill to another hitting on all major touring attractions such as the Cathedral, Baixa district, or Basilica da Estrela. This charming vehicle, largely unchanged in 50 years, turns up the excitement as it reaches its end in Graça. There, it navigates narrow streets almost defying the laws of physics. Its price is 1.50 Euro and although usually crowded with tourists who get off at Santa Luzia viewpoint for the customary shot, we recommend staying on the whole trip as in a roller coaster with beautiful views. A memorable, one-of-a-kind experience.

Picture-Postcard!
It is the most sought-after picture as the visitor looks out onto the Tagus estuary. Lisbon's "Golden Gate" adorns thousands of postcards and makes us dream of the vibrant side of this nostalgic city. This great piece of engineering with a length of 2.27 kilometres (her masts rising 190 meters above the water level) was built in 1966 by the same company that built the famous bridge in San Francisco. It owes its name to the revolution of 25 April 1974, which brought democracy to Portugal. Its construction did away with traffic jams on its neighbour Vasco de Gama bridge. If you are not driving over the bridge (entering Lisbon this way is quite an experience), find at least a vantage point in the city (San Pedro de Alcantara is just perfect) at nightfall to see the illuminated bridge. A monument to frame romantic moments with the soft ocean breeze in your hair.

Stunning Baroque masterpiece
Its enormous dome is one of the most recognisable is the city, which seems befitting to a place sumptuous enough to bury the heroes of the Portuguese nation. Situated opposite the Church of San Vicente De Fora, right in the middle of Santa Clara field, the building is a baroque wonder whose construction began in 1682 and ended in 1966. Therefore, the church of Santa Engracia, its real name, served in Portugal as a measure of things that never end. Fortunately, the wait was worth it and now visitors can marvel at its magnificent dome decorated with pink marble and gilt scrolls. Among its famous graves, we find fado singer Amalia Rodrigues (nearly always covered with flowers) and those of the writers Aquilino Ribeiro, Joao de Deus and Almeida Garrett, as well as those of several presidents of the republic.
Iglesia de San Vicente de Fora (St. Vincent of Fora Church)

Crowning the Alfama district, specifically along Sao Vicente, stands this huge and regal white mass, which would roughly equate Portugal's Escorial, as this convent served as a pantheon for the Braganza dynasty. If Roman churches come to mind as you contemplate its classicist facade, it is simply because its architect was the Italian Filippo Terci, who completed the work in 1627. Its balanced façade, symmetrically arranged with two towers on either side, tells nothing of the luxury hidden inside and the Baroque baldachin of Machado de Castro. One of the main reasons to visit this temple is its eighteenth-century blue and white tiles, an artistic marvel depicting bucolic rural images surrounded by cherubs and scenes drawn from the fables of La Fontaine. Beyond its inner beauty, do not forget to climb to the tower and admire the views of the city below.

The caravel of heroes
Built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator, this huge sculpture is one of the most evocative monuments in Lisbon. Its shape is that of a huge caravel bow, where the most famous heroes of Portuguese history are represented under their monarch. On the western side, we find the figures of mathematician Pedro Nunes and the chronicler Gomes Eanes de Zurara while, on the eastern side, we see famous sailors like Vasco de Gama and Ferdinand Magellan. If one looks out to sea as indicated by the petro monarch, it is easy to imagine the excitement felt by those people that crossed the Atlantic seeking new territories and defying gales and ferocious seas. Inside this colossal, 52-metre high monument, runs an elevator that goes up to the top to offer a new view of Lisbon portraying Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery and the nearby, 50-meter wide compass rose on the floor of the Avenida de Brasilia.

Magnificent and splendid.
Its impressive dome is one of the references that travellers use to find their way, being visible from most city locations. The reason for its magnificence lies in the fulfilment of a royal vow. As it happened, Queen Mary I promised to build a glorious temple if God allowed her to bear a male heir to inherit the throne. Thus, after putting Prince Joseph in the cradle, work began on this temple located in the Praça da Estrela, aptly combining baroque and neoclassical styles. The construction was finished in 1790 albeit the heir died two years earlier from chickenpox. In any case, the result did not fall short of the royal gratitude and its interior, decorated in grey, pink and yellow marble, instils a strange feeling of peace and coolness. The temple holds a nativity scene of sculptor Machado de Castro, author of the equestrian statue of Jose I in Plaça del Comercio, with nearly 500 figures.

Witness to the Portuguese empire.
There was a time when Lisbon was the centre of the world. Its explorers sailed the seas in search of a new world that made of Portugal an empire. This monastery, the Manueline Gothic masterpiece, it the only remaining witness of those days of glory and wealth. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, its construction began on 6 January 1501 to celebrate the return of Vasco de Gama from his historic round the world expedition. The church, featuring a single nave with fine and lengthy columns resembling skyscrapers, holds the remains of the sailor to whom you may pay tribute (the other tomb is that of famous writer Luis Camoes). The enchanted watchtower
For many, Lisbon is not just a city but also and specially a magical place. Now, they may have a point if we reckon this is precisely the city's most iconic landmark. Because this mini fortress, rather than a relic of its glorious past as the cradle of conquerors and explorers, resembles an enchanted tower as those featured in films such as The Princess Bride or Pirates of the Caribbean. Unfortunately, neither mythical nor paradise waters bathe the Belem Tower but the cold Atlantic instead. Erected during the prosperous reign of Manuel I, it is one of Gothic Manueline masterpieces, an era in which the discovery of America fuelled fantasies of architects, hence its decoration features sailboat lines and other marine elements. The secret of the diamond.
The building's history is as fascinating as its legend, according to which one of its sharp stones hides a diamond placed by its architect for a bold soothsayer to find it. Also known as Casa de Brás de Albuquerque, this structure, reminiscent of Manueline Gothic style, stands as we leave the Alfama district (Rua dos Bacalhoeiros, 1100-135). Francisco da Arruda built this building in 1523 to be later destroyed by the earthquake that devastated Lisbon in 1773 and, after which, it remained abandoned until its rebuilding was undertaken in 1983. At the end of the day, is one of the rare examples of Renaissance civil architecture in Lisbon. After a period serving as an exhibition hall, it now houses the foundation of Nobel Laureate José Saramago (All information in http://www.josesaramago.org/), whose harmonious décor reflects the brilliant thoughts of the author of Essay on Blindness.

Also called Elevador do Carmo (Carmo Elevator), it is arguably the world's most elegant elevator. Neo-Gothic's crowning glory, it is the work of engineer Raul Mesnier, one of the outstanding disciples of Gustav Eiffel (in fact, many attribute the work directly to the latter though his relationship is unproven). This wrought iron jewel communicates the districts of Baixa Pombalina (downtown Lisbon) with the top of the Chiado where you find the ruins of Convento do Carmo. Opened on 10 July 1902, it was for many years one of the few public Lisbon vertical elevators, since the remaining elevators are rather funiculars. With its 45 meters high, it offers a privileged panoramic views of the city with St. George Caste in the background and the Baixa overflowing into the Atlantic (caution: despite its appeal, it is not suitable for those suffering from vertigo).

Towering walls.
Its unmistakable, imposing walled mass dominates any city scene. Stones bear witness to Portugal's history, from the V century Visigoth invasions until the last indignants with Portuguese politics, through the ninth century Muslim invasion or the exodus of royalty. These serpentine walls and elegant rectangular towers that once served to defend the city, offer today superb views over the rooftops in the Bixa and Barrio Alto areas. However, its attractiveness goes well beyond the fabulous views; inside, you can also visit the Tower of Ulysses where images of Lisbon (camera obscura) or the galleries exhibiting ancient relics of the city. The sculpture, standing on the populous point where the elegant Chiado neighbourhood meets the bohemian Barrio Alto, honours the most beloved Portuguese writer for Lisbon locals Pessoa notwithstanding, who awaits visitors sipping coffee at the centenary A Brasileira. The monument of Luis de Camoes (1524-1584), author of the Os Lusíadas and one of the fathers of Portuguese language, serves as meeting point for locals going out in the Barrio Alto. Looking out to sea, you will observe two nearly identical Baroque churches: the Italian Church of Loreto and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnacao. At first sight, Lisbon might seem devoid of large green areas like London's Hyde Park or Madrid's El Retiro. However, this modern garden downtown bears a significant resemblance to those. Ideal for flopping on the grass on a sunny day, it was named after Edward VII of England, who visited the Portuguese capital in 1902 to secure unity in the Atlantic axis. In a city as hilly as Lisbon, its main garden is also a long green slope with the Tagus as a backdrop, near which we find some of the tourist attractions of the city as Estufa Fria or Pavilhao Carlos Lopes (Carlos Lopes Pavilion), aptly named after the winner of the 1984 Olympic marathon. Even if Lisbon lacks the open gayfriendlliness of other European cities - it has no gay district such as Madrid's Chueca or London's Soho, this square and garden, one of the favourite gay gathering areas in the city, deserves a quiet stroll. On these very grounds stood an old chapel, the Patriarchal Basilica (from 1755), which caught fire and was destroyed 14 years later. Today, it is a pleasant park whose centennial cypress stands at the centre of a lush romantic garden laid down between 1859 and 1863. Nearby, in the Rua da Seculo, we also find interesting buildings, among them the convent of Conceição de Cardais, the chafariz do Século of Carlos Mardel, or the palace of the Carvalhos. During the day, this seems the ideal place to stop by and relax sipping a drink at the square kiosk. At night, however, the area becomes one of the liveliest in the city.

The heritage of Marquis of Pombal.
This is the lower and central part of the city that owes its current appearance to the Marquis of Pombal, who was responsible for its construction following the earthquake that devastated the city in 1775. Its elegant layout, with perpendicular avenues of gleaming white pavement, is nowadays home to the financial and commercial centre of the city, where travellers can experience the less nostalgic face of the city. Among its squares stands out the Rossio Square and, next to it, the Figueira Square, two large spaces in the anthill of slopes of the city. Rossio Square, officially called Praça Dom Pedro IV, named after the first emperor of Brazil, houses on its north side the Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II, daughter of Dom Pedro, built in 1840. On the left, we find the Rossio train station, whose neo-Gothic façade (1887) evokes adventurous trips to faraway lands. Baroque arch of victory.
Here, opposite the magnificent Tagus estuary, it took place a momentous even in recent Portuguese history: the Carnation Revolution, which overthrew Marcelo Caetano's government without bloodshed. The Marquis of Pombal, as he built it following the destruction of the Royal Palace that stood on the area in the earthquake that devastated Lisbon in 1775, surely had an inkling of the historical facts the place was poised to witness. Hence its sumptuous Baroque style exemplified in the Victory Arch, designed by Verissimo da Costa and crowned by famous figures such as Vasco da Gama's, the Explorer. Past the arch, the Atlantic breeze takes us back to those times in which the king of Portugal settled there his residence from St. George Castle (lemon yellow of the buildings is the actual colour). An immense horse statue of José I stands in the dead centre of the square. Even if the remaining buildings are currently occupied by ministries, the place remains popular and hosts a broad range of recreational and cultural activities.

Relax atop the city
Lisbon is a city to be admired from above and this balcony over the city is an outstanding spot to do so. Adorned with Frenchified gardens of almost Parisian elegance, this viewpoint truly portraits Lisbon's magnificence: the elegant Baixa (downtown), St. George Caste with Alfama at its feet and the blue see as backdrop. Those with good eyesight (or powerful cameras lenses) can try and identify the main monuments of the city, because most are indeed on display from here. The Church of Graça stands especially splendorous on the opposite hill, as does the fortified tower of the cathedral. The atmosphere, not as hectic as in other viewpoints, proves ideal for a picnic among white sculptures or to relax from so many uphill battles under its shady trees. Best option to get there is Elevador de Glória lift.

Sunsets lovers cannot miss this viewpoint overlooking the 25th of April Bridge, Lisbon's Golden Gate. From this point, the city strongly reminds of San Francisco, not least because most city hipsters gather here to watch nightfall. Don't be surprised to run into buskers or couples in love seeking solitude. Mind you, the visitor will soon discover to be in Lisbon for its domestic beer: the Sagres - available in large bottles or in the chilled jars served in park kiosks. All this under the watchful gaze of Adamastor, the Titan described by Luis Camoes in his legendary novels, and whose statue oversees the gardens. That meagre grass patch usually receives droves of youngsters who will move uptown afterwards. If you are seeking something slightly more cosy and convenient, sit on the terrace of Noobai Café (Rua de Santa Catarina, s / n), a classic venue to taste some Portuguese specialties while feeling the damp Atlantic breeze in your face.

Lisbon's heart maybe lies in this labyrinthine neighbourhood that marvels the traveller with surprises around every corner: whitewashed chapels, baroque churches, very artistic graffiti. This is a city you should explore without haste or maps, which are not much help anyway since you will easily lose your way in its narrow and busy streets (especially recommended are the San Joao Ruas and Rua dos Remedios), awash with children playing, shopkeepers by the door of their small grocery stores, and grandmothers taking out their chair to chat in the street while watching the world go by and evoking the glorious past of this former capital of the Portuguese Empire. The smell of fried fish and that Portuguese melancholy pervades this neighbourhood that extends beneath the cathedral to open up to the sea, a destination shrouded in mystery awaiting the adventurous traveller.
