As the economic and cultural capital of Greece, Athens is the ideal starting point to explore the wonders of the Hellenic Republic.

If you take one of our cheap flights to Athens, you won’t be able to resist boarding one of the ferries that leave from the Port of Piraeus (one of the oldest in the Mediterranean) and head to the Cyclades islands, the jewels of the Aegean Sea. Paros, Santorini and Mykonos are definite musts for anyone looking for beaches and nightlife, as well as their trademark charming villages of whitewashed alleyways and houses with brightly coloured doors and windows. The tiny uninhabited island of Delos, accessible only from Mykonos, deserves separate mention, as it is home to one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Greece.

To say the same of Athens would be an understatement, as its vast plethora of attractions range from the stunning Acropolis, home of the Parthenon, which dominates the entire city, to the 2004 Olympic Sports complex located in the northeastern town of Marousi, designed by Spaniard Santiago Calatrava. Just next to the Acropolis, discover the picturesque neighbourhoods of Plaka, Monastiraki and Anaflotica, where the stunning views provide a perfect backdrop for a picnic of dolmadakia (vine leaves filled with rice and herbs) and a glass of retsina wine. The city also boasts central districts with vibrant nightlife, such as Psiri, Thissio and Gazi, Athens’ new gay district, located just on the outskirts of the old gas plant, which has been converted into a large space for art exhibitions. Athens does not only proudly exhibit its ancient ruins, but boasts an impressive ability to renovate and modernise.

Flying with Iberia to Athens is a privilege. If you travel to the Greek capital, please be aware that the country is one hour ahead of Spain and has a temperate Mediterranean climate, which means pleasant temperatures all year round. However, the best times of the year to visit are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the climate is mild and there are more than 260 days of sunshine.

If you take a flight to Athens, you'll land at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. The distance between the airport and the centre of Athens is 34 kilometres. At quieter times of day when there is not much traffic, the journey takes approximately 30 minutes, whereas during the rush hour it might take you 45 minutes. The most practical way to get to the city is Line 3 of the metro (blue). There are two services per hour between the airport and the metro stations Aghia Marina, situated west of Athens, and Syntagma (Station 15a) and Monastiraki (Station 16a) in the centre of Athens. Alternatively, you can take a bus in to the city.

Athens cuisine is noted for being very fresh, healthy and balance. The dishes are based entirely on Mediterranean ingredients like olive oil, freshly caught fish and seasonal vegetables.
