Tourist guide: what to do and see in Lima

Lima

Lima, your next adventure

With history, culture, surprisingly diverse natural surroundings and one of the most renowned cuisines in the world, Lima is the ideal destination for your next adventure.

Explore Lima
and its neighbourhoods

The Historic Centre of the capital was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. It is home to the Plaza de Armas and monumental buildings such as Lima Cathedral and the Government Palace, as well as the Catacombs of Lima. Its contrast with modern Lima is striking, along with neighbourhoods such as Miraflores, lively around Kennedy Park, and Barranco, a destination in its own right for lovers of art and culture.

Hello! I'm Paula and I’ve been an Iberia cabin crew member for six years.

Today we’re flying to one of the most popular destinations in Latin America for its culture and cuisine: Lima. Are you coming with me?

Hello, Lima! I’ve been looking forward to coming back. Let’s rest for a while and then head to one of my favourite neighbourhoods.

You can’t miss Barranco, a neighbourhood full of colour, urban art and charming places to stroll around.

Did you know it’s the setting for many of Vargas Llosa’s novels? In fact, he has a house here.

Dédalo is one of my favourite cafés and it’s right here in this neighbourhood. You’ll also find plenty of local handicrafts here.

I’m amazed by the variety of fruits you can find here, such as mamey or lúcuma, which is why I like to come and try some of them at Surquillo Municipal Market. Here you’ll also find plenty of local food options.

One plan I always like to repeat when I come to Lima is walking around its historic centre. You shouldn’t miss the old train station, now called Casa de la Literatura, or the Museo de los Descalzos, a hidden gem.

And to finish the day I’m going to take you somewhere with many centuries of history. Come with me.

Huaca Pucllana is a complex of pyramid and temple ruins, and I think it’s a very different and magical way to end the day. I recommend the traditional ají de gallina and stuffed potatoes with meat and cheese with huancaína sauce.

And with these incredible views we say goodbye to Lima.

I’m ready to head back home now. See you in Madrid.

Connecting people, we build the future. Iberia.

The Pucllana archaeological complex, in the district of Miraflores

Archaeology | In Miraflores you will find the archaeological site Huaca Pucllana, a sacred complex that formed part of the Lima culture and once covered 16 hectares between 200 and 700 AD.

Culture | For more than 100 years, in the Pueblo Libre district, the Larco Museum has offered a fascinating chronological journey through more than 5,000 years of history of ancient Peru. A pioneer in bringing archaeology closer to the general public, it houses a collection of nearly 50,000 pieces, including an astonishing selection of gold and silver artefacts, as well as its famous collection of pre-Columbian erotic art. Its storeroom is unique in Peru and one of the few in the world open to the public.

Peruvian
cuisine

The menu

Numerous restaurants in Lima are recognised among the best in the world.

Beyond its acclaimed contemporary Peruvian cuisine, the capital offers an exquisite variety of traditional proposals where you can taste emblematic dishes such as ceviche, pollo a la brasa and causa, among others.

In addition, Lima reflects the influence of diverse cultures, particularly its nikkei and chifa cuisines, the result of the gastronomic fusion that emerged with Japanese and Chinese immigration to Peru.

To pair with | Pisco has been produced in Peru since the late 16th century and today more than 500 wineries with denomination of origin produce this emblematic drink from eight varieties of pisco grapes. Its production is concentrated in the regions of Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna, where many wineries open their doors to visitors to show the distillation process and offer tastings.

Machu Picchu,
a unique experience

The 43 kilometres that make up the Inca Trail to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu are part of the network the Incas developed to connect their main cities and religious centres. Formerly known as Qhapaq Ñan, it passes through archaeological sites such as Puyupatamarka, Wiñaywayna and Intipunku before reaching Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. To discover this masterpiece of architecture and engineering at 2,430 metres, we recommend booking your Machu Picchu ticket in advance due to limited availability.

Peru,
naturally

More than 400 species of flora and fauna, including the Humboldt penguin, inhabit the 3,350 km2 of the Paracas National Reserve. This protected natural area, in the province of Pisco, encompasses desert, ocean and islands, offering a unique ecosystem.

Another paradise for adventure lovers is the Peruvian Amazon, with extraordinary biodiversity. Destinations such as Loreto, where you can spot the fascinating pink river dolphin, and Madre de Dios, with its lush nature, are must-sees for explorers.

Surfer’s paradise | The longest left-hand wave in the world can be found in Puerto Malabrigo, located in the province of Ascope. An extraordinary phenomenon for surf lovers, it runs for almost 4 kilometres and offers different sections. The best time to enjoy it is from March to November, although it can be surfed all year round. Take advantage of your visit to this region to explore its cultural attractions. There are pre-Columbian sites such as Chan Chan, the largest pre-Hispanic adobe city in the Americas, which served as the capital of the Chimor kingdom and is a World Heritage Site, as well as colonial landmarks such as the historic centre of Trujillo.
