The capital of the Rhine
As the capital of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Dusseldorf has earned itself its place as the most important economic city in Germany. This industrial city has continued to evolve and grow to become the large, cosmopolitan city it is today. Your visit here is sure to be a pleasant surprise. The Rhine River that runs through the city is a key tourist attraction, as the little cruises that run along it on a daily basis are a great option to discover the surroundings. The Rhine Tower offers spectacular views of Dusseldorf. A great time to visit is during Carnival, which is one of the most famous in this area. You must learn to cheer “Helau!” and Kamele!”, which are two traditional exclamations shouted at these celebrations. A plethora of museums, theatres, concert halls and many bars around the Old Town (or ‘Altstadt’) await you. This is the best way to get your bearings, and the nighttime views are breathtakingly impressive. Its menu is based on German recipes, offering all types of local meats, such as 'bratwurst' (the popular sausages) and 'axe' (shank). A plethora of diverse books of all shapes and sizes line the shelves of this very special bookshop.
Literature paradise.
For history buffs and literature lovers, the ground floor of the Stern-Verlag bookshop is a must-see. This is not a typical old bookshop, as the building itself is modern and famous throughout the city. However, although its exterior does not exude the charm of the old bookshops, this enormous bookshop is home to a reader’s paradise. You will find all kinds of books, discontinued editions, authors’ manuscripts, and works of literature and history that you may not find anywhere else. There is a large variety of books in all languages that recount the history of Düsseldorf and Germany. You can actually find books that narrate the city’s history from over two centuries ago. This bookshop is located at number 24 on Friedrich Street.

Nazi architecture?
Wilhelm Kreis was one of 20th-century Germany’s most important architects. He was also one of the most controversial figures, as his political activism gave him the reputation of being a Nazi. Built in 1925, the Planetarium of Music, or Tonhalle, is one of his most famous works, and is one of Düsseldorf’s most original and symbolic buildings. Far from what its name suggests, this iconic building is one of the city’s most important concert venues. At 38 metres tall, its dome houses an event hall with 2,000 seats and impressive acoustics. The building’s interior itself is breath-taking, with its light fixtures and enormous ceiling. At the centre of the dome, you will find an interesting blue reflecting ornament, surrounded by 21 mirrors that slowly turn throughout the day. If you are also looking to see a live performance, don’t miss out on this visit.
The Gallery Düsseldorf

Fashion invades Düsseldorf!
The Gallery Düsseldorf festival has been running for around 30 years, despite having changed its name and location. This is celebrated twice a year, in February and July, and has revolutionised the fashion world in this city. Designers flock to this festival from all over the world to display their exclusive collections, as well as smaller dressmakers who come to promote their clothing lines. Of course, it focuses on brands that are, or are trying to become, prestigious and exclusive names. This means that not all shops are able to benefit from this space, so the ‘showrooms’ on Königsallee are also open for an alternative part of the festival. Although it is mainly dedicated to the female public, the children’s version of the festival was inaugurated in 2012, in the same place at the same time.

Rectangular skyscraper.
The southern entrance to the city of Düsseldorf is safeguarded by this curious monument. It was built between 1992 and 1998 by the architects Overdiek, Petzinka & Partner. This skyscraper was built on top of the tunnel that gives access to Düsseldorf. In addition, if seen from a distance, it has a symbolic rectangular shape, which immediately made it become one of the emblems of the city. Since 1999 it became the seat of the German Chancellery. Its more than 77 meters high are maintained on steel structures and are decorated with modern sets of glass. The result is one of the most avant-garde architectural monuments you can contemplate. In fact, it won the Oscar for Architecture in 1998 for it. Many people compare it to the Great Arch in Paris, but we leave that to your imagination.
San Apolinario and the largest fair in the city

San Apolinario commands.
San Apolinario is the patron saint of the city and his festival is on July 23. Taking advantage of this festival and an old shooters' championship, Düsseldorf dresses in its best clothes and organizes the biggest fair of the year on the banks of the Rhine, in the huge meadows that surround the river on the outskirts of the city. During the month all kinds of attractions fill these fields and despite the fact that their ferris wheels and attractions are focused on the little ones, they promise fun and entertainment for the whole family. In addition, a shooting championship is held every day to safeguard this tradition of the city. Shooters from all over Germany, even from other countries, come here to compete for first place and be crowned king of shooters. That day there is a festival that ends with some spectacular fireworks over the river.

The largest bar in the world.
If you’re looking for something to do at night, you’re in luck. The Old Town, or Altstadt, is also known as the largest bar in the world. This is due to the fact that over 200 bars line its alleyways and old streets. It is therefore imperative that you begin your night out here. Enter any bar or tavern that takes your fancy and you are bound to immerse yourself in a buzzing atmosphere. You must also order an ‘Altbier’, which is the typical beer of the area, usually served in enormous tankards. You can also sample some of the local dishes, as most bars will serve sausages and other tasty treats to accompany your first few drinks. Later on, we recommend heading to Königsallee in the centre, where you will find a plethora of nightclubs and bars that stay open until the early hours of the morning.
The Rhine Riviera

The Rhine River is Düsseldorf’s backbone, and it has played a key role in the city’s history, as well as that of the entire North Rhineland region. The city of Cologne was also born on the banks of this waterway, which is one of the most active rivers in all of Germany. Düsseldorf has undergone a massive restoration in the last several years, which has earned it the nickname ‘Riviera of the Rhine’. This restoration involved an enormous amount of engineering, in order to shift motorists away from the centre and make beautiful leafy walkways for pedestrians along a large part of the river. You can actually walk all the way to the Rheinturn communications tower, which watches over the city and boasts a lookout point that offers some of the best views of Düsseldorf.

This tower is a favourite with tourists. The views are stunning and the walk there is delightful.

This telecommunications tower is the tallest and most popular in the city. This 240 metre tall building offers stunning views of the city and is one of the most popular tourist attractions. You can get here by public transport or car, but we recommend walking here along the Rhine riverbank. This is not a particularly long walk, but it is extremely beautiful. There is a restaurant on the top floor, which offers delicious German dishes, as well as fantastic views of the Rhine and the rest of the city. Even if you are not here for a meal, you can still go up to the impressive lookout point that is one floor below the restaurant. Did you know that the clock on top of this tower is the largest digital clock in the world?
Rheinischer Sagenweg

Mythological excursions.
The city of Düsseldorf and the whole North-Westphalia Rhineland region has amassed a vast array of tales, legends and mythological stories that revolve around it. It has been the setting for so much mythology that the excursion to Rheinischer Sagenweg has been nicknamed ‘the journey of tales and legends’. This is the path that connects this city to Mainz. Along the way, you can visit 48 small villages and a large handful of medieval castles, which have all given rise to fantastical tales and legendary characters. This area has also been the backdrop for many writers and artists around the world. From Victor Hugo to Clemens Brentano, many have written about the mythical surroundings of the Rhine Valley, but it was Heinrich Heine above all, who revealed the fantastical nature of this German zone to the rest of the world.
Rathaus, the city's Town Hall
A must-see: bars, taverns, architecture, sculptures and huge amounts of history.
It all starts here.
The city’s Old Town is called Altstadt. This formed the first part of the city and documents the city’s existence since back to the 11th century. Today, it is commonly known as the world’s largest bar, due to its large amount of bars and taverns that line its streets. At the centre of the Old Town, you will find Marktplatz square, one of the most important parts of the city. Among other reasons, it is home to the Town Hall, or Rathaus, and is one of the city’s historic business and trade centres. This Gothic building was founded in 1573 and is comprised of three buildings that were built in the years after. The presiding statue honouring the memory of Prince Johann Wilhelm, also known as Jan Wellem, has been watching over the town’s stunning square since 1703.

Strong and dark.
‘Altbier’, a dark, strong beer, is the typical beer served in Düsseldorf. Up until recently, it was also called Dussel, as it was also distilled in the city. However, since it does not have a designated origin, it can also be brewed in other places. Whatever the case may be, it is imperative that you spend some time in the Old Town or Altstadt, which is commonly know as the largest bar in the world, due to its plethora of bars, pubs and taverns. The first thing you must order is an alt, and we recommend accompanying it with a portion of local sausages. These bars all offer local dishes, and it is also a good idea to line your stomach when drinking such a strong 'altbier'.
Nordpark park
In the middle of these gardens, you will find a genuine Japanese garden that's well worth a visit.
Beautifully wooded.
The North Park (or Nordpark) is one of Düsseldorf’s most beautiful areas. It dates back to 1937, when the city hosted the ‘Great Reich Exhibition of the Productive People’. This was a very important time in German history. These enormous gardens, dotted with statues and symbols of the regime, were opened for this celebration. Despite their unpopularity at the park’s inauguration, the two large figures titled ‘Horse Tamers’ by Edwin Scharff, were made for the dictatorship at that time. You must also visit the Japanese garden that the Japanese community presented the city of Düsseldorf with in 1975. This is the largest Japanese area in Europe. This visit offers an interesting comparison between both eastern and western cultures, as you stroll through and admire the adornment of both parks.
Jägerhof Palace

An important civic building.
The Jagërhof Palace, along with Benrath Palace, is one of Düsseldorf’s most important monumental civic buildings. Jagërhof Palace houses information on various fundamental chapters in the history of the city. Firstly, it was built during the 18th century as a seasonal residence for the country’s leaders. However, it is said to have been plundered years later by insurgent troops, and was declared in ruins until 1811, when Napoleon discovered it. It was renovated and became inhabitable once again. Among many of its present-day functions, it houses the Goethe Museum. This exhibition displays a large handful of manuscripts, personal objects and works related to the author. Interestingly, this is also where you will find Napoleon’s hill, which is home to a tribute to Heine.
Benrath Palace
A real German icon. Today, it houses several of the city's important museums.
An exceptional palace.
This colossal palace is located in the outskirts of Düsseldorf. It is without a doubt the German city’s most majestic and emblematic building. Today, this monument is home to the Museum of Natural History, the Museum of European Garden History and the Corps de Logis. However, when it was erected in the 18th century, it was a recreational and hunting palace for the kings and rulers of the country. You can not only visit this impressive megalomaniac baroque work, but visit its enormous gardens that surround it, with its lake that is also part of the Rhine River. We recommend combining your visit with a visit to some of the museums, but there is no need to hurry, as you can also stroll through the gardens at night under the lights that illuminate them. A truly breath-taking experience.
K20/K21 Museums
This is your date with modern art: Paul Klee, Kandinsky and Picasso are just a few examples of what you will find here.
One hundred percent cosmopolitan.
The city of Düsseldorf is considered one of the country’s most cosmopolitan cities and one of Europe’s best cultural examples. This reputation is in part due to museums, such as the K20/K21 Museum. These two centres focus on European and American modern art. The K20 building houses 20th century works, and the K21 centre houses works from the present century. Amongst its almost 90 works of art, the collection of works by Paul Klee, a Swiss painter whose career was divided between Expressionism, Surrealism and Abstract, is extremely noteworthy. His paintings have become symbolic of European modern art. However, this museum also hides away works by Kandinsky, Picasso, Beckmann and other key 20th century artists. The K20 building is located on Grabelplatz, just a stone’s throw from the river, and the K21 centre is located in Ständehaus, next to Kaiserteich Lake.
Goethe Museum
This museum covers both the personal and professional life of Goethe, a German writer par excellence.
A tribute to the universal man.
Before you enter this building, you must know that Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe was not just another German writer, as he played a key role in creating the literary genre of Romanticism throughout the 18th century and was one of the most influential people in the history of Germany. Through the years, Goethe has become one of the country’s most renowned symbols. Deemed the last “universal” man, the author of Faust is the image of literature and Romanticism in this city. The museum pays tribute to him with collection upon collection, as he himself was a die-hard collector and compiled a vast collection of medals, coins, engravings and much more throughout his life, which are all displayed here today. Additionally, a large number of his works, manuscripts, personal letters and other possessions are exhibited here, creating a special and personal look into his life.
Cinema Museum
Voilà! One of the most comprehensive collections of cinema on the continent. You are sure to find marvels of the seventh art here.

For lovers of the seventh art, the Cinema Museum was opened to the public in 1993 in the heart of the city, in the middle of Altstadt. It is interesting that a city such as this one houses one of the most comprehensive cinema exhibitions on the continent. Nonetheless, this museum boasts a permanent exhibition that covers the history of cinema with objects and pictures from all eras. There is also a replica of the Roxy Theatre in New York, one of the most important historic theatres in the world. Of course, they also offer constant screenings of all types of film, from world cinema to series of completely alternative films from all over the world. In another of its rooms, costumes and props from historic films are on display. This museum is located at number 4, Schulstrasse Street.
Melans Gasse
Cheap, quality beer and an unusual DJ. This is the place to be at nightfall.
A unique, special bar.
Melans Gasse is not a normal bar. Located on Hülnerstall Street, at the heart of the city, it is surrounded by many other bars and taverns. But all the locals know that this bar is different. Melans Gasse is the place to be at night, for various reasons. Firstly, they sell beer for under two Euros, which makes this bar very popular with youths and students. Groups upon groups of friends gather here to buy rounds of beer for each other. Shots and other local drinks are also popular here, and only cost one Euro. The resident DJ is also one of Düsseldorf’s icons. This is an over fifty-year-old lady in a hat, who plays music and dedicates every night to animating the crowds. This bar is easily recognisable, as it has a cockerel at the door.

This shop offers endless styles of hats for all tastes and is a real Düsseldorf institution.

This quirky hat shop got its celebrity name from a combination of Brigitte Bardot and Kelley Roos. Surprisingly, this brand has taken a very specific, limited accessory and created a real institution in the fashion world, right here in Düsseldorf. Under the premise that hats are not just outdated, women’s accessories, this shop offers hats designed for all types of people and occasions.
You only have to walk in here to see for yourself! The diverse styles range from period pieces that replicate those worn by famous actresses on the silver screen, to the most modern styles for men, sporty people and the more adventurous customer. One thing you should know about Düsseldorf, is that the locals gather every Wednesday for an event that is a must-see if you are looking to immerse yourself in the local culture of this city. Every Wednesday at sunset, crowds flock to a little cobbled alleyway in the Old Town.This is Rattingerstrasse, a central street that is famous for its vast array of bars and taverns that serve ‘altbier’ (this is how you should order a beer here). Strangely enough, despite the weather (Düsseldorf is not known for its pleasant weather), the street is completely full of animated people drinking beer. It is a predominantly young crowd, but professionals will also come here to take a mid-week break from work with beer and friends.

There are two main festivities celebrated in this city: Carnival and Christmas. The latter fills Düsseldorf with lights, markets and Christmas decorations. If you are visiting at this time of year (the markets start a month beforehand), do not miss a visit to the Town Hall Square, at the heart of Altstadt. Every last cobblestone of this Market place is covered with stalls selling all kinds of Christmas wares, as this city is well known for its artisanal tradition. Many locals wait all year to showcase their newest creations. The Christmas souvenirs and decorations here are truly unique, such as the Nutcracker. Don’t forget to sample a hot chocolate or a ‘Glühwein’, which is a warm, mulled wine that is typical to the area.

Although Düsseldorf’s most famous gastronomic delights are meat (such as ‘bratwurst’ sausages) and ‘altbier’ beer, the city also boasts a small, yet delicious, tradition of desserts. If you are looking for a sweet souvenir, don’t miss a visit to the famous Carlplatz market, where you will find the Café Otto Bittner bakery at number 20. This is a real institution in the city. The shop window itself showcases all kinds of dessert, particularly sweets made with marzipan and chocolate. You will see intriguing cakes decorated with the city’s symbols that are not only a work of art, but a delight for your taste buds. The Radschläger is a popular Düsseldorf souvenir, which is both the symbol of the city and delicious sweet treat.
The Düsseldorf Carnivals
Welcome to one of the most famous carnivals in the world. It all starts on 'Fat Thursday'.
Helau!
Unlike other places, Düsseldorf celebrates its carnivals in November. This festival begins on the 11th of the month and keeps the city animated and in costume for several days. The celebration is so popular that it is commonly referred to as the fifth season. It starts with ‘fat Thursday’, when ladies dressed as witches kidnap the mayor and take over vcontrol of the city. The following Sunday, Königsallee is taken over by thousands of people in costume and floats of all colours and purpose. Throughout the day, everyone restlessly awaits the big event that takes place the following day. That Monday, an official parade of floats, costumes and musical performances takes over the entire German city. Be sure to join in with the festivities’ traditional war cry, “Helau!”
A mile of books
Every Saturday and Sunday, this second-hand book market is filled with lovers of literature.
In the middle of the Rhine.
This area is dedicated to lovers of literature, history and culture in general. Commonly known as the mile of books, it is located between the old port and the castle square, halfway along the Rhine. This second-hand book market opens at 11 in the morning every Saturday and Sunday, throughout the year. Its shelves are filled with all kinds of books in all languages, including rare first editions and manuscripts. Music-lovers will also enjoy their large selection of records. Locals come here every week to value and sell their old books. There is also a huge book swap, so you won’t have to spend too much money.
Kaiserwerth Island
This"'ex-island"'s quirky history makes it well worth a visit.
Oodles of history.
The story of the old Kaiserwerth Island is one of Düsseldorf’s strangest. Located in the middle of the Rhine River as it passes the city, it began to be inhabited around the year 700. At that time, a monk named Saint Suitbertus built a Benedictine abbey, which was destroyed eight decades later. However, in the 11th century, one of the imperial palaces was built here. During the young King Henry IV’s reign here, the Archbishop Anno I of Cologne kidnapped him and took control of the crown. Later, in the 12th century, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa moved his residence to this island. It then became a strategic location and, temporarily, a territory belonging to Cologne. In 1929, after numerous conflicts, it became a territory of Düsseldorf once again, and the island was no longer an island, due to the fact that it eventually joined up with the land and now makes up part of the riverbank.

Themed fairs.
This enormous complex that spans over 20,000 metres is located in the Stockum neighbourhood and is entirely dedicated to the city’s themed festivals. It plays host to all kinds of different exhibitions and markets year-round. One of the most famous and traditional festivals is the CPD, the city’s largest fashion festival. However, the Boot Festival is also very well known here. This nautical festival exhibits boats, motors and all kinds of accessories and objects from the maritime world. If you are a car fanatic, we recommend checking their calendar, as they often hold automobile exhibitions and trade fairs. As you may already know, one of the country’s key industries is the automobile industry, which means that these are first-class exhibitions of technology and design. You can take the metro here (lines 78 and 79) or bus 722.

A foodie tour.
All of the city’s Old Town is known as Altstadt and is the perfect place to sample some of the area’s gastronomy. Lose yourself in any of the alleyways and you will find endless amounts of bars and restaurants offering typical cuisine. Firstly, you must try the 'düsseldorfer senfrostbraten', a grilled roast served with mustard sauce. The 'rheinischersauerbraten' is also a roast, made with marinated beef. Another popular meat dish is the 'blutwurst', which is the typical German blood sausage. It is usually served with 'reibekuchen', made with fried potatoes in slices, served with black bread and local sauces. If you like tough meat, you must try the 'eintopf', a stew made with vegetables. This area is a meat-lover’s paradise. Of course, you can always sample a typical German sausage.

Brauerei Schumacher.
As you already know, the city’s Old Town is known as the largest bar in the world, due to the amount of taverns and restaurants that fill the area. Amid this web of alleyways, you will find the Brauerei Schumacher, a lively old tavern that serves some of the city’s most delicious beers. A large part of this beer is brewed in this very building, and it is a key reference point for the country’s brewers. We also recommend browsing their menu, as they serve some delicious dishes. This tavern is extremely popular and can be quite crowded, so we recommend not coming in a hurry, particularly at dinner time.

As you already know, carnivals are the city’s most momentous festivities, along with Christmas celebrations. Throughout the month of November, residents take to the streets dressed in their finest costumes and bring the town hall and main roads, such as Köningsallee, to a halt. But that’s not all. You can visit this museum year-round and marvel at exhibitions of the most important artwork from these carnivals. You will find historic outfits that have played a key role in this region’s folklore, as well as some of the most original and surprising costumes that have even won prizes. Year after year, the prize-giving committee gathers here to decide on the city’s best costume, as well as the most original floats of the yearly parade. This collection displays all kinds of objects relating to the carnival, and the museum has become one of the most popular attractions the city has to offer. Don’t miss out!
Schadowstrasse Street
An important commercial avenue where luxury and well-known brand names play the key role.
Commercial glamour.
This large avenue is, along with Königsallee, the area with the most luxurious and exclusive shops in the city. Although they are not side-by-side, they are close enough to one another that it would only take a pleasant ten-minute stroll from one to the other. A large stretch of this avenue is a well-kept, pedestrianised zone, making it a delightful area to window-shop. One of the thinnest skyscrapers you will have ever seen divides the avenue in two. If you want to experience the city’s hustle and bustle, Saturdays see swarms of visitors who come to enjoy this part of town.
Kunsthalle Düsseldorf

Modern art.
As you will discover, Düsseuldorf is a city with a vast arts scene, which is why it required so many spaces dedicated to such cultural interests. This brought about the creation of the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, a modern centre both in shape and content. The building itself is a modern, functional and multidisciplinary architectural work of art. This building was designed by architects Beckmann and Brocks, and was inaugurated in 1967. It is wholeheartedly dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary art and, along with the Kunst im Tunnel museum and the NRW-Forum centre, forms the city’s most important modern art triangle. Düsseldorf is therefore one of the most exemplary cities in Europe, when it comes to contemporary art. This building is located at number 4, Grabbeplatz and is open daily apart from Mondays.

Oodles of art!
Next to the Rhine riverbank, at number 4, Ehrenhof Avenue, you will find this enormous estate that spans over 10,000 square metres. This is the Kunst Palast, housing one of the largest art exhibitions in Düsseldorf. This centre, just as we see it today, opened its doors in 2001 and combined the Museum of Art and the Palace of Art to form the Düsseldorf Museum Palace of Art. However, its collections have been compiled in both centres since the 18th century. These collections include paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs that cover almost the entire history of Germany and the continent, from the classic period and the Middle Ages to the present day. Additionally, this centre boasts a library that exhibits a large handful of classical works, as well as a theatre with over 800 seats. Underground museum.
On the Rhine riverbank, you will find a centre that spans almost 900 square metres and is dedicated to the exhibition of modern art. You may find it difficult to visit, as it is an underground museum. This museum is located at number 1, Mannesmannufer, and its entrance is strikingly visible. The terrace surrounding it is the perfect place to eat lunch or dinner and relax after having visited its exhibition. Inside, you will find vast halls that display various collections of photography, paintings and film work. This space boasts a large number of documentaries and cinematographic works that are alternative and far from mainstream. Königsallee
Museums, historic buildings, luxury boutiques, markets, antiques, a leafy avenue, two bridges… This is the "Kö Boulevard"!
The city's backbone.
Königsallee Avenue divides the city in two and is also the backbone of the city’s commercial zone. It is lined with a mixture of historic buildings, such as the Opera and theatre, and the most prestigious and luxurious shops of the city. This boulevard, also known as “Kö”, was built along the Rhine River amid a beautiful leafy area, so that everybody would know where they are. Along the avenue, you will find shops and boutiques of some of the world’s most famous designers, along with other, more high street, shops. Hidden away among the museums, art galleries and surrounding alleyways, you will also find all types of local shops, such as book shops, music shops, antique shops and, at certain times of the year, markets and second-hand stalls. Don’t miss a visit to the bridges that connect the two riverbanks.

Litres of alcohol coursing through your veins
Although Altbier beer is the city’s drink par excellence, it is not the only beverage on offer. If you like strong and unique drinks, we recommend a visit to Kabüfte, on Flinger Street. Once there, you must try the Killepitsh, a very strong local liquor. Its incredibly high volume makes it one of the strongest drinks you will ever taste. It is normally served in shots, which cost around 5 Euros. If you look around you, you will see that the natives will drink a shot alongside an ‘altbier’. However, we recommend you drink it at your own pace. This is one of the best ways to warm up during the cold winter months.
Heinrich Heine Institute
Heinrich Heine was one of the brave ones to write poetry in German. His valiant efforts make this museum well worth a visit.
In the middle of Bilker Street.
Heinrich Heine was a classical scholar, born in Düsseldorf in 1797. Although he spent his last days in Paris, his hometown considers him an icon of the city, as his past is deeply rooted here. He was a journalist, essayist, writer and one of the few poets to write in the German language, for which he gained international acclaim. The Heinrich Heine Institute opened its doors in 1974 on Bilker Street. This centre preserves the author’s attitude, as it combines a museum about Heine, a library that houses the first editions of his books, manuscripts and hand-written notes, as well as subsequent studies on his works. The most noteworthy of this collection is the original poem about the legend of Lorelai, one of his most famous works. You will also find many of his controversial statements against social and political issues in Germany and France, which have made him so popular.
Saint Quirin Chapel
A prime example of both Romanesque and Catholic architecture in the middle of the small village of Neuss.
Eight sides.
The peculiar octagonal tower in front of you signifies that you have arrived at Saint Quirin Church, one of the best examples of 13th-century Catholicism in the entire North Rhineland. You can see that Romanesque architecture was at its peak in this area, as there are many clear architectural examples of German Catholicism. This enormous monument was built in the tiny village of Neuss, just a stone’s throw from Düsseldorf. For art and architecture connoisseurs, you will notice the characteristic four towers surrounding the dome that form a diamond-shaped roof, as well as certain elements that are closer to Gothic style, as opposed to Romanesque, making it a very unusual building, as it transitions from one style to another. Of course, the sky-blue dome is the most identifiable part of the building.
Hofgarten
This park offers a space to breathe in fresh air amid the cosmopolitan, urban city. A highly recommendable green area.
A green city centre.
In the middle of the city centre, across Hofgartenstrasse or Elberfelderstrasse, you will find one of the most beautiful green areas the city has to offer. As if it were put here to give air to the city’s most urban area, the Hofgarten Park offers a leaft oasis up to the entrance to the Altstadt. Inside, you can visit the Jägerhof Palace, one of the most impressive and historic buildings in the city, built during the 18th century as a residence for the princes and now home to the Goethe Museum, one of the area’s most interesting museums. This delightful park has been here since the 16th century and is a must-see for both its history and its pleasant surroundings, which are ideal to relax in after a day of sightseeing.
Frank Gehry at MedienHafen Port
This is the most innovative and avant-garde part of the city. Plenty of leisure spaces and one hundred percent cosmopolitan.
Düsseldorf modernity.
Meidenhafen is the city of Düsseldorf’s port, and shows its more avant-garde, modern and innovative side, as opposed to the Old Town and its Gothic buildings. It is also one of the most popular leisure areas for locals as well as tourists. You will find an array of restaurants, bars and pubs here, but what really characterises this zone is the architectural design of its buildings, which create one of the most cosmopolitan areas of the city. Firstly, the three buildings designed by Canadian Frank Gehry are easily recognisable by their sense of movement. Secondly, the Stadttor, or door to the city, is an unusual building located above the entrance to a tunnel. Designed by Petzinka&Partner, it got its nickname from its resemblance to a doorframe.
Altstadtherbst Festival
Music of all styles and all eras hits the streets of Düsseldorf in September and October.
Quite a spectacle for your ears.
Between the months of September and October the streets of the old town are taken over by the biggest festival in Düsseldorf. This is the Altstadtherbst Festival that, for years, has earned its place as a cultural claim throughout the country. Spectators come here from all over Germany and other parts of the continent. This show fills the streets with musical performances of different styles; there is room for traditional music, folk, jazz, rock and pop. But it is also a stage for new trends. The same happens with theatrical proposals and dance. The most important representations of the country perform here, edition after edition, but so do the most alternative proposals. In fact, one of the most popular aspects of the festival is street theatre. The mixture of cultures and artistic proposals fills the streets during those days, so if you are in the city, do not miss it.
The Rhine Valley
Mountains, valleys, trees, deer, badgers, wolves... that's what this purely Germanic ecosystem is like!
Country adventure.
The so-called Rhine Valley that surrounds the city is made up of mountains and valleys that emerge following the direction of the river. They reach Colonia and other parts of the country. All these leafy mountains have shaped the mythology and much of the culture of the North Rhine-Westphalia region. Its forests are made up of local trees such as birch and beech in inland areas and walnut and oak in those closest to the river. On your way you can find deer and badgers and some say they have seen wolves. To get to these places you will have to take an excursion and travel several kilometers away from the city. In parks such as the Nordpark or the Bilk, these typical ecosystems of the area are also shown. In the Wildpark children feed wild boars and fawns. The choice depends on your desire for adventure.
The secret to Düsseldorf mustard
This is where they keep one of Düsseldorf's best-kept secrets: the recipe for this unique mustard.
The most famous mustard.
Hidden away in Altstadt’s network of alleyways, you will find a shop called Gewürzhaus Vogel. Today, this is the largest herb and spice dispensary that you will have ever seen, offering products that you will have never even heard of before. Their most famous product is what they call Mostertpöttchen, which is a mustard that is unique to the area, but world-renowned in the cooking world. In fact, although several attempts have been made to import it, it is very difficult to find it anywhere else but here. It is sold in unique and beautiful glass jars, adorned with two essential symbols. The first is an anchor, the symbol of the city. The second is the initials ABB, which stand for Adam Bernhard Bergrath, after whom the condiment is named. He first made it in 1781 and his recipe has been passed down through his family ever since.

The Brauerei zum Schiffchen restaurant is located at number 5, Hafenstrasse Street, and is the oldest restaurant in the whole of Düsseldorf. It opened its doors way back in 1628, in the same location as it is found today, in the middle of Altstadt. If you’re strolling through the Old Town and want to sample some of the city’s most traditional cuisine, this is the place to go. Its historic value is also unquestionable and incredible. Inside, you will find the best meat of the city, and we recommend the 'metzger leibgeritcht', which is a dish of different local sausages. Any dish you order will be delicious, and don’t forget to order an 'altbier', the city’s typical dark beer, to accompany your meal.

Hooray for Heinrich Heine!
Heinrich Heine was born in 1797 at number 53, Bolker Street, on the interior patio of a house that no longer exists. He grew up on this street and became the most important representative of Romanticism, as well as the last of his kind. It was this writer that internationalised the Romantic Movement in the 19th century, as well as the city of Düsseldorf itself, its areas, its climate, its legends and its myths. Across the city you will find memorials and references to this figure, from busts exhibited in the Hofgarten, to the city’s own university that is named after him. However, those who would like to delve deeper into the history of this very important person should visit Bilker Street, where you will find the Heinrich Heine Institute, which boasts a library, museum and archive of his life and works.
The modernist market of Engelchen
Germany is renowned for its market traditions. However, this market offers a different experience that you are sure to enjoy.
Charming and colourful.
The most popular markets in Düsseldorf are the ones at Christmas, particularly the one that is set up in the Town Hall square when festivities begin. Those around carnival in November are also very popular. However, there are other types of charming market on offer here. To be precise, the Engelchen market is very different from others. Located on Heinrich Heine Square, just a stone’s throw from the commercial Königsallee Avenue, this modernist market offers a completely different experience to the others. Locals gather here every week to buy and sell all types of wares; from car accessories (don’t forget that Germany has a great love for automobiles) to clothes, records and vintage phones and valve radios. The market is worth a visit, even if it is purely to take in the atmosphere.
Carlsplatz market
Without a doubt, the best food of the area is found here. You'll find it everywhere!
Enormous and ancient.
Carlsplatz market is the oldest market in Düsseldorf, with a history that spans several centuries. It began as a food market in the outskirts of the city, where residents would gather on a daily basis to buy and sell whatever had been fished, hunted and cultivated in the area. This was the main gateway for products originating in Düsseldorf that were sold by fishermen who worked all day at the port, and is now located in the middle of the city centre. You can enjoy this enormous market from Monday to Saturday. Although you can find all types of merchandise, many stalls offer the best gastronomic delights that this area has to offer. If you are thinking of taking a delicious treat back as a souvenir, you can sample and buy the best here, whether it be cold cuts, cheese, wine, liquor, or the region’s tasty beer.
The Landtag Nordrhein-Westfalen building
The most interesting aspect of this building is clearly its completely circular design.
Controversial and loved.
This unusual circular building was inaugurated on the 2nd of October 1988 and was the first German building deliberately built to be the North Rhine-Westphalia Parliament. The design was chosen through a competition, where they chose the most modern and avant-garde option. Although its construction was controversial due to its high budget, the building gained an overwhelming acceptance from the city’s residents. The strangest part of the building is the fact that it does not have any angles. Everything is circular, in order to symbolize its conciliatory nature. Even its plenary hall is circular, with over 300 seats facing each other. This architecture is based on the idea that everyone in the room is able to see everything around them. Although this room is only open to the public at certain times of the year, the rest of the building can be visited freely.

Düsseldorf is renowned for its reputation as a cosmopolitan and multicultural city. Among other cultures, there is a large Japanese community here, which is the largest in all of Europe. There are over 7,000 Japanese residents, and this centre was opened in 1993 to honour and teach the values and customs of this culture. This house dedicated to Japanese culture is located at Brüggener Weg, in the Niederkassel neighbourhood. Inside, you can visit its Buddhist temple, its enormous and beautiful Japanese garden and a traditional house, where you can sample Japanese tea (a very popular attraction for tourists and locals alike). Traditional activities, such as musical, dance and theatre performances, are frequently held here too. This is a must-visit for anyone who would like to find out more about eastern cultures, while visiting one of Düsseldorf’s most beautiful areas.

If you are visiting during the summer months, you will be able to enjoy several open-air festivals and cultural activities, as the locals like to enjoy the good weather as soon as it arrives. One of the most noteworthy celebrations is Japan Day, which takes place every 2nd of June on the Rhine riverbanks, in an enormous green park located between Burgplatz and the Parliament. During this festival, the Japanese community (which amounts to over 7,000 residents, making it the largest Japanese community in Europe) displays its culture to those who attend as a means of thanking the city for welcoming the culture into its society. It is also a way of exhibiting their culture, and you will be able to enjoy traditional dancing, music, martial arts, Japanese culinary demonstrations, and even lessons in origami. The Rhine is one of the most important rivers in Germany, as its port activity played a vital role in the development of Düsseldorf and many other cities. Along this route, you will see the largest cathedral in Germany and the twelve Romanesque buildings that represent the city. Just as in the rest of Germany, there is a large Turkish community in Düsseldorf. Firmly integrated into society, this is the region’s largest foreign culture, particularly when it comes to gastronomy. Although you will see vast amounts of take-away food stalls dotted around the city, we recommend a restaurant, where you can sit down and sample traditional Turkish cuisine. This restaurant is called Bosporus, located at 174 Karl Rudolf Street in the city centre. Frequented daily by Turkish locals, this is not a particularly touristy place, and the food is guaranteed to be authentic. It is said that they serve the best hummus in the city, but, strangely enough, they are also famous for their fish soups. With very reasonable prices, this is a great place to take a break from German food and try something new.

Japan invades Düsseldorf.
As you may have already noticed, Düsseldorf is a city with great cultural diversity. Through the years, this fishing village turned into a meeting point for all different nationalities, particularly Japanese and Turkish people. In actual fact, this city is home to the largest Japanese community on the continent. It is therefore no surprise that Japanese culinary traditions can be found all over the city, so if you would like to try some Japanese food, you’ve come to the right place. Also situated along the banks of the Rhine, Cologne is only 40 kilometres from Düsseldorf and is a very popular excursion for those staying in the capital for several days. One of the best ways to get there is by boat, along the river. Cologne is the most populated city in North Rhineland and the fourth most populated in the entire country. This city boasts a blossoming culture and is rich in history, as you will discover as soon as you arrive. We recommend a visit to the modern monuments, such as the Hohenzollernbrücke Bridge, one of the most important railway bridges in Europe, and RheinEnergieStadion, the sports stadium that was once called Müngersdorf. But don’t forget to visit historic monuments, including the Neogothic Cologne Cathedral, and Saint Mary’s in the Capitol, one of the city’s most unique Romanesque churches.

Artistic and avant-garde.
One of the reasons that Düsseldorf has become such a cosmopolitan city is that it is home to enormous museums dedicated to the classical period and the Middle Ages, as well as galleries and centres displaying some of the most avant-garde collections. The NRW-Forum plays a key role in the city’s more contemporary culture. Located at number 2, Ehrenhof Street, this gigantic building offers all types of international and national exhibitions. Closely linked to the new arts, you are bound to find series of photography, graphic design and advertising here. Celebrities, such as the Canadian singer Bryan Adams, have chosen this space to exhibit their collection of portraits. It is also a Mecca for architecture aficionados, due to its plethora of exhibitions.

A small square with great significance.
This small square used to surround the old castle, and is one of the city’s most emblematic places. Today, the castle has almost been reduced to ruins, as only one of its original towers remains. It fell victim to a fire in the 19th century that almost completely destroyed it. However, it has still maintained the memory of part of the city’s medieval history. At the other end of the square, the banks of the Rhine River lap against the Burgplatz walls, so that you don’t forget where you are. In this same location, you can visit the Navigation Museum, which explains the history of navigation on this river throughout the city’s existence. Finally, for a less cultural and more urban visit, the Burgplatz square is the gateway to the bars and cafes in the city centre. This is the perfect place to relax, lose yourself in the surrounding alleyways and sample some of the local beer.
Bergerkirche
This Protestant church really gives off a false appearance. The spiritual history of Germany is to blame.

Despite the fact that the Catholic and Christian religions are predominant in Düsseldorf and the rest of North Rhine-Westphalia, other spiritual creeds have played an important role in the city’s history. There were also a large number of Protestants and Evangelists, which is now the second most prevalent religion of the area. However, the building of temples for these denominations was banned until the 17th century. Because of this, the church located at number 18 on Berger Street does not look like a working church. Originally, the church was secretly opened inside the building and the area’s residents would discreetly gather here to pray and honour their creeds. It is hard to believe that, years later, Protestantism would become so prominent in Germany.
Saint Lambert's Basilica
This original structure represents the city's deeply-rooted Catholicism. God bless Saint Lambert!
Bird's eye views of the city.
This Catholic church was erected between the 13th and 14th centuries and is one of the most visible façades of the city. This stone and red brick Gothic monument served as a posthumous tribute to Saint Lambert, who was assassinated in the city of Liege in the year 705 for defending and reasserting his Catholic beliefs. The church also served as a mausoleum, in which the remains of this martyr were kept. Its façade is one of Düsseldorf’s symbols and is easily recognised by its enormous 72-metre tall tower, which can be seen from almost every part of the city. Although it had to be restored on several occasions due to the region’s adverse climate, it has maintained its original shape and its tower, which was restored with wood and curves to create this unique helix shape.

Getting to know the Old Town.
Altstadt is the word for old town in German, and this is where you will find some of the most important nooks of the city. Firstly, you will find Burgplatz on the Rhine riverbank. This is the city’s most important square, where you will see the ruins and remaining tower to the castle of the Earl of Berg, as well as the Navigation Museum. The Rathaus (Town Hall) is also a must-see, as it comprises three historic buildings in the middle of Marktplatz. For a religious tour of the North Rhineland capital, head to Saint Lambert’s Basilica, which is the most important Catholic church in the city, along with Bergerkirche Church, which is a Protestant church hhidden away on Berger Street, due to the fact that Protestantism was illegal in the 17th century, when it was founded. This area is also one of the most relaxed parts of the city, as it is known as the largest bar in the world, due its vast array of bars and pubs. This is the perfect place sample some of the local food and drink at any time of day.
