It's not only the most populated city in the south of Italy, and capital of the province that takes its name, as well as Campania, the Greeks, Romans, Normans, and Spanish have left their mark available for the most curious of travellers. The land of famous celebrities such as Guiseppe Verdi or Sofía Loren is also home to the pizza margarita, which is a delicacy made during the 18th century by Raffaele Esposito as a tribute to Queen Margherita and then became an essential worldwide food product.

Saint Januarius' Basilica and Catacombs
The Capodimonte mountain welcomes you with a spectacular basilica, and some very long underground passages.
An underground experience.
Between the 2nd and 3rd centuries in the outskirts of the city, and at the top of the Capodimonte mountain, these very long underground passages were built with the aim of having space for the mortal remains of the city's population. Although it's true that it became the city's main cemetery, a large part of the passages were reserved for more distinguished and well-known people such as San Agripina who was bishop and patron saint of Naples, or Januarius, the bishop of Benavento. In fact, all these tombs are carefully decorated with all kinds of works and make up the most interesting part of this visit. To start the route, you must enter through the Basilica del Buon Consiglio. Make the most of observing this place too, as it preserves a spectacular collection of art. From here, there's an underground tour of approximately 1 kilometre waiting for you.
Church of Santa Chiara
Tombs, paintings, works of art... This church which is at the head of Neapolitan history is a real gem.
The number one.
The city's most important and characteristic monument stands very close to Gesù Square. Built between 1310 and 1350, this church has witnessed time pass by the city's streets, and it has also resisted wars, earthquakes, floods and pillaging. Nevertheless, the church has managed to safeguard a good piece of Naples's history inside the building. For starters, the mortal remains of the Royal Angevina family are kept in this place (one of the most important families in the city's history and builders of the church). Curiously enough, this church also stores the tombs of part of the Bourbon dynasty from Fernando to Francisco II, as well as numerous works of art from all periods among which a 15th century painting stands out that has surprisingly resisted all this time to be put on display.
The Phlegraean Fields
A surprising and interesting place, which inherited the volcanic nature of Naples.
A geological accident.
The Phlegraean Fields are one of those geological accidents which can only be found in Naples. They are located on the city's northwest coast and the volcanic nature of this region has marked a large part of this city's history. It's true and undeniable that great tragedies such as Vesuvius are truly awful, but there is a kinder side to such tragedies, and this is naturally the Phlegraean Fields, for example. In fact, they are not strictly volcanic, as they are a result of hydrothermal phenomenons which occur below this earth. These phenomenons are processes which started more than 12,000 years ago, and under the ground you are stepping on. They caused more than 24 craters with a strong and surrounding activity of gas, which makes it such a surprising place, and this is how the large fumaroles appear that can be seen from the entire park.
Pozzuoli
Its preserved ruins and the fact that Sofia Loren was raised here make two good reasons for getting to know Pozzuoli.
Roman land.
The village in which the famous actress Sofía Loren was raised is located at a few kilometres from Naples, and this isn't the only reason for going to visit this village. Pozzuoli is a Roman enclave that keeps some very well preserved ruins, and very near the centre of the city you can see the Anfiteatro flaviano puteolano (Flavian Amphitheatre) which dates back to the 1st century, and is believed to have been built by the same architects as those who built the Roman Colosseum. This amphitheatre was curiously the third largest in the world (during the Roman era) with a capacity of up to 40,000 spectators. Although this may be surprising, it's important to know that the town of Pozzuoli was almost as important as Naples for the province of Campania, during the imperial period. Its volcanic paths which go along the edge of the mountains, as well as the forests, make it an unavoidable destination for getting to know, and to understand this whole province, and it's the seismic and volcanic activity which has been the defining part of its nature, and therefore, the civilisations that populated Pozzuoli.
Parco Virgiliano

Crowning Posillipo.
There is a hill named Possilipo in Naples. This hill is known for its different and unusual kind of stone called tufa stone. On the highest part of this hill, you will find Parco Virgiliano, which is one of the most pleasant green areas in the city. This large peaceful area is completely built out of this type of stone. This place has been becoming more popular, and what started off as a simple park has now become a vast oasis with children's sports, and relaxation areas. In fact, as you will have been able to see, Naples is a city with lots of hustle and bustle and unfortunately there is a lot of pollution. The traffic is dense and continuous, and it was the city itself that demanded a place where people could take refuge from this way of life. By the way, there are a few terraces at the top of the park from where you can make out the whole Neapolitan coast, and its beautiful surrounding islands.
Gaiola Marine Park

The Gaiola Marine Park is a protected area of the Neapolitan coast. It is located in the so-called Discesa Gaiola and is a terrestrial and marine paradise to visit. It is advisable to rent a kayak on the beach itself to explore the islets that make up the reserve. In fact, for the adventurous and daring, the ideal is to dive around these rocks since much of their interest is the archaeological remains found under the sea. The facilities themselves offer equipment rental services and plenty of guided courses for those uninitiated in this sport. Under the water you can see the volcanic ruins that have been submerged over the centuries. Much of the history of Naples is found under this geological area, in fact, you can see volcanic remains that are 12,000 years old.
Ischia

The island of Ischia appears like paradise on the horizon, and it's a multi-coloured island near the famous volcano of Vesuvius. This volcanic island is deep in vegetation, and its little village is located at the lowest part next to the port. As a good marine enclave, the white and blue colours dominate, which turn it into a unique photograph for a souvenir. All the routes you can imagine throughout the island, and through its natural terrain are at your disposal, from visiting its volcanic remains, to going through its almost jungle-like forests. But what generates the most interest on the island are its natural hot springs. These beach springs develop thanks to the volcanic origin of Mount Epomeo, which rises nearly 800 metres before your eyes. The beaches that surround the mountain will allow you to enjoy a relaxing bath in this beautiful and natural environment.
Capri

The island of Capri is fancied as one of the loveliest and most intriguing excursions that you can do from Naples. This beautiful island is perfectly linked by ferry, and just the boat trip alone is an experience itself. On arrival, you will disembark at Marina Grande, which is a huge port that you must go round as the first destination on the island. The calmness, the sea breeze, and the sea, are the elements of this part of the island. From the same place, you can take the cable car that joins the port with the city's historical centre at the top of the island. The views are spectacular from here where the entire island will be below your feet, as well as the residents, and even the volcano Vesuvius on sunny days. Part of Italian History.
The city of Sorrento has a large chapter in Italian history. It was founded in the era of the Roman Empire, and has been around for nearly as long as Naples. In fact, there used to be a population here before the Romans arrived, but it was the Romans who established the city. Although its streets show this influence, there are also traces of what happened later. The walls that used to surround the city are still there, which were built during the 16th century to protect the city from neighbouring invasions. The Duomo or cathedral that you can visit was also refurbished during the same century. However, the city's most symbolic and historical monument is the Basilica di Sant'Antonino built during the 11th century, which still maintains architectural and decorative elements from the Imperial Age. Naturally, the views are magnificent of the island of Capri, the shores of Naples, and the large volcano of Vesuvius.
Pompeii
A visit to Pompeii stirs the feelings of even the strongest of people. It's impressive to see the incinerated bodies which are still preserved nowadays.
Tragicomedy.
As a matter of fact, a visit to the city of Pompeii means an experience which is equally mixed of both history and tragedy. This is about a city that was suddenly buried without any prior notice in the year 79 AD, by a fierce explosion from the volcano situated next to Pompeii known as Vesuvius. It was precisely due to such immediacy that nobody could have survived, and the majority of the residents were trapped in the city. This fact turns the ruins of the city into a very well preserved photograph of the city's day-to-day life. Everything stopped in that moment, as if it were a film. The ruins that you can visit are enormous, and they are surprisingly well preserved (taking into account that the majority were buried until the 17th century). The Theatre of Pompeii is one of the essential pieces among the ruins, and so is the ancient brothel which is preserved between its streets. But what's undoubtedly most impressive about this visit are the incinerated bodies that were left motionless since the day of the explosion, and up to the present day.
The Amalfi Coast
This coast has been, is, and will be the desired object of many. Its islands, beaches, and nature make it seem like paradise.
The main attraction of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The kilometres of coast and beach bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea comprise what is known as - the Amalfi Coast. Everyone has longed for this coast since the Roman era and so much so, that its islands and beaches have been invaded by different civilizations throughout history. Its orography and nature make it one of the most beautiful places that you can visit in Italy. In fact, this coast was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1997 by UNESCO. Its two most important enclaves are Amalfi and Ravello, and both places have been particularly touristic throughout history. In fact, numerous famous people have made this place more popular and have used it to inspire their work. Wagner, for example, used it to set one of his works, Henrik Johan Ibsen also wrote part of his works here, and Greta Garbo and John Steinbeck frequently visited the coast at the beginning of summer.
Subterranean Napoli

40 metres underground.
Although it seems impossible, there is actually an underground Naples too. This city located around 40 metres underground has lived in parallel with the over ground city for many years. You have to go back to the era of the Roman Empire to find its origins. However, different episodes of the same story have developed in this setting throughout history. During the war in 1945, it was a refuge for so many civilians who tried to escape the bombing. The underground even had its own mythology, as there is a story of a spirit named Monaciello who lives down there. This spirit lives in these tunnels but he goes up to the surface and steals from the residents, which is why you usually hear the expression Monaciello will have taken it when something goes missing in Naples. It's one of the most interesting areas to visit in the city but take a coat with you because it's always cold down there.

From the hilltop of Vomero, one of the city's symbols guards the city of Naples - Castel Sant´Elmo. The construction of this castle began back in 1329 under the order of the King of Naples, Robert I. His mission was to construct a building where the city could be watched and protected from the sieges and invasions by neighbouring civilizations. The place was suitable, in fact, this castle had an endless number of fights, confrontations, and battles. Without going any further, it was taken by the French and Spanish Crowns, and suffered attacks by numerous other surrounding nations. This building became a strategic military enclave, which was very important in the era during which Naples was one of the key kingdoms in Europe. Neapolitan nightlife is presented in a fairly scattered way throughout the city's streets but we will give you some tips for enjoying a pleasant evening in the city. To start off the route, the Piazza Orientale and Piazza San Domenico enjoy a great atmosphere during the first few hours of the night, especially with young people and university students (taking into account that Naples is a usual destination for students from other cities), and especially during summer. All the establishments on these squares are filled with people from 10 pm. The district of Chiaia also presents a great atmosphere and a lot of places where you can mix dinner with the first few drinks. Once you're well into the night, we recommend two nightclubs according to the season: in winter, the Duel is very popular with a great atmosphere, but you can also drop into Voga during the summer. Both clubs close during the small hours of the morning.
For Young People
Students start to storm Plaza Bellini at night: the night is young and this is their starting point.

There is a place in Naples called Piazza Bellini in the heart of the city. And this place is one of the key places at night, especially for young people and university students. The whole square and its surrounding streets fill up with people during winter and summer. Piazza Bellini is a usual meeting place for students to start off their nights at weekends. All the restaurants, tapas bars, and pubs to have the first drink start filling up with people as night falls. Aniello Falcone
This professional painter, and skilful real swordsman was a controversial 17th-century figure. You'll be surprised as you get to know his bitter story.
An important and controversial figure.
Aniello Falcone is one of the most important figures of the 17th century, which is why he is part of the city's history. He was an interesting painter who made the baroque style fashionable in the city. As a painter, however, he stood out more for his works on battles and wars than his paintings that were destined to triumph among his artist friends. He was fond of arms, and in fact he was a great swordsman who fought in the city's different battles among which stands out the famous Revolt of Masaniello in 1647. But his story has an even more bitter side to it. He formed an armed band named Compagnia della Morte (meaning "Company of Death") with whom he managed to instil panic in the streets of Naples. In fact, he had to leave his city but he returned later only to die there. Part of his works are exhibited in museums all over the world like the Louvre, but you can see a good number of his works in Naples Cathedral.

The Chez Moi is more than a nightclub, it's an example and the epicentre of nightlife in the city of Naples. Although the city doesn't have the fame and the variety of other large capitals in the world, it does have this club with an international reputation due to its years of success. It's a club located at number 13 on the street of Parco Margherita, and it has various rooms in which an alternative is offered for each time of the day or night, from an exclusive Japanese restaurant on one of its floors, to a designer bar which is open all day. Of course the most well-known part of its interior is the night club, where hundreds of people go at night during every weekend. Try it! Italian coffee is a delight: it's tasty and made in so many different ways.

Coffee is one of the specialities of Neapolitan cuisine, and it's almost a religion in the city. In fact, it's nearly impossible to find a place where the coffee isn't delicious. But it's true that you must have some idea about this drink. There are numerous varieties but it's most common to order an expresso, however, which is served in a small glass with a little amount of coffee, and it is usually very strong. Another popular drink to try is Caffè ai cioccolatto which replaces sugar with chocolate and it's a real delicacy, which is usually ordered as a dessert. And if you want to try new varieties, you can choose between caffè del cardinale, caffè all´anice, or caffè all´nocciola. These are all typical varieties in the city, and we recommend a place where you can try all these coffees: the Gran Caffè Cimmino on a street called Chiaia where this café is a real institution of the substance.

Tasty Neapolitan cheese.
Mozzarela Di Bufala is possibly the most traditional and indigenous product of Naples. With centuries and centuries of history, this type of cheese has turned into the city's gastronomic flag. The fact that it is the main ingredient usually used in all traditional dishes in Naples, as well as Italian cuisine in general has obviously helped. The production of this cheese dates back centuries in history, and although it involves a complex process, the basic aspect of its production is that it is carried out using water buffalo instead of cow milk. Piazza Municcipio
The cuisine and gastronomy are particularly important in this square: there are plenty of markets and all kinds of restaurants.
Vittorio Emanuele III still dominates this square.
This enormous town square is a gigantic rectangle which takes up a large part of the city's tourist and commercial activity. It's located at the end of Via Firenze, and at the place where it joins Via Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, which are two main arteries of Naples. You will recognise it instantly, as you'll see an enormous equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele III in the centre. In this square and in its surroundings, you'll find a lot of places where you can taste Neapolitan cuisine. In fact, it's a usual place for food markets and takeaway food (especially for pizza and other similar dishes). A chocolate fair is held near here every November at a place called Galleria del Mare, next to the Stazione Maritima, and where you can try all of the city's traditional sweets.

Despite being attributed to the home of pizza, the city of Naples divides its cuisine into two sides. The home of pizza.
Although it is impossible to prove, people say that Naples is the origin of the age-old pizza. We will never know if this true, since it could have possibly been various places at the same time. Nevertheless, it is true that there are certain characteristics of this dish that make it unique in this city. In first place, you must know that there are two, traditionally Neapolitan kinds, which are the pizza marinara and the pizza margherita. The Anjou Legacy.
The church of Santa Maria La Nova was given this name to distinguish it from the other grand church in the area of the same name. Don't let its name cheat you though, as this building has been standing since 1216. Since a large part of the monumental buildings in the city were constructed under the order of the Anjou Crown, Carlos of Anjou ordered this church to be built over the ruins of that medieval construction. Curiously enough, this historic monument turned into one of the most popular places in Naples for holding events. But it's also home to what's called the ARCA, which is the Museum for Contemporary Religious Art. This museum was conceived in the year 2006 as an alternative to the more traditional museums. The idea of this museum is a trip round religious history but based on works which are more modern, and explain their history from a current perspective. This museum is a different way of getting to know the city's religious history.
National Museum of San Martino
A military fortress, a church, and now a very important improvised museum. Would you like to go up here?
Watching the city from above.
You can make out the white walls of Castel Sant'Elmo if you watch the city from the highest point. Like nearly all the buildings constructed in this way, it was conceived as a military fortress to defend the city. Towards the 13th century, building work began to renovate this building and turn it into a church under the reign of Charles of Anjou, son of Roberto of Anjou. Despite the delay of its inauguration, this place was turned into an improvised museum as world-famous artworks are kept between its walls. From pictorial works by Ribera, Caracciolo, Guido and Reni, you can also find sculptures in the shape of busts by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. Although there are people who say the museum's own decoration and architecture make up the most important pieces of the exhibition. This is why you must not miss its high altar, its corridors with sets of marbles, and its so-called treasure chapel which have all bared witness to the passing of baroque, gothic, and rococo influences in this church.
The Cloister of Santa Chiara
Do not miss this marvel: the corridors of the cloisters are decorated with some bucolic paintings that will not leave you feeling indifferent.
A magnificent cloister.
Although this is about the Basilica of Santa Chiara, the famous cloisters alone which enclose this building have already turned it into a real museum. Besides this, the paintings and frescos that decorate every inch of its interior walls make this place worth a visit. Its exterior shows you the oldest gothic construction in the city. Its interior keeps one of Naples' treasures. Each corridor of the cloisters is decorated by some frescos with different biblical and religious scenes that teach visitors and show them the way towards the museum's interior inside the church. The vegetation around the building has been carefully chosen to complement the painted bucolic scenes. It is said that this interior landscape in the basilica has been maintained this way since the 18th century. The whole Santa Chiara complex, that is to say the monastery, museum and cloisters are found on the same route as the Duomo in the district of Spaccanapoli, where you can make the most of travelling back in time through these monuments and find out about many key parts of the city.

Palm trees and columns.
When you arrive at this place, you'll see the huge gardens with palm trees in front of the building. At the end of the garden, the group of white columns inspired by Greek and Roman architecture indicate that this is the beginning of the gallery. This museum opened its doors thanks to princess Rosina Pignatelli who donated her art collection to the city of Naples in 1952. Her huge and exclusive collection consisted of paintings, sculptures, and all kinds of artworks of many different artistic trends. Here you have from the Italian Renaissance, to nineteenth-century movements waiting for you behind these walls. However, we recommend that this visit is split into two. First of all, visit all floors inside the museum, and when you have finished, we recommend that you spend a good while on going round the building's exterior in order to see its gardens and fountains because this place is spectacular, and this is the best way to take in what you have just seen.
Castel Capuano
The oldest monument in Naples was hoped to impress the people. Nowadays, it makes an impact on all who visit it.
Far from the centre.
This gigantic castle situated in the outskirts of the city, and in the vicinity of Porta Capuana from where it takes its name, shows the importance and the power that the city of Naples had centuries ago. This colossal building was used as a civil court for matters in the city. Inside the building, you can visit the court of appeals and the busts room where numerous civil justice processes are carried out each day. A large part of the exterior was built with the idea of impressing the people and to show strength. The large double-headed eagle and the huge shield protecting it still crown the entrance and bear witness to it. In addition, you should know that this castle is originally Norman, and construction began in the year 1140, which makes it the oldest monument in the city.
Villa Donn'Anna
You will like its golden tone and its mysterious aura. Perhaps Lady Anna and her stories also contribute some mystery.
The guard of the bay.
This spectacular 15th-century building stands over the ruins of the original building named La Sirena to turn it into the guard of the bay of Posilipo. This is how Villa Donn´Anna appears, which is raised over the sea shore with that golden colour caused by its volcanic rock, and shrouded by its extraordinary and mysterious aura. The folk here used to say that Queen Lady Anna had several lovers who were often chosen among the fishermen who worked in the waters near the castle and that these men were murdered or thrown off the cliffs near the castle. The parties organised at this place were also famous, where plays and concerts were performed on its terraces to give the queen a better reputation. Now there are all kinds of stories about this woman and the souls of her deceased lovers who are still meant to inhabit this castle.
Museo di Capodimonte
Despite the problems that its construction entailed, it is an important museum nowadays: you will enjoy Caravaggio and Botticelli, among others.
Do you know its history?
This museum was the summer residence of the King of Naples and Sicily during the Bourbon period back in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum was commissioned by Charles III of Spain and the construction of this building endured many problems, as its monumentality and need to demonstrate the strength of the new Crown required some economic funding that the city could not supply. Its construction was therefore stopped on several occasions. When the building work was finished under the reign of Charles VII (Charles III of Spain), its purpose was not only to house the royal family during the summer, it was to protect all the art collections that it could take, and notably the collection of the Farnesio family, which was one of the most important families during the 16th century that possessed some of the most outstanding artistic attributes in the world. Nowadays, this museum keeps works by Caravaggio, Botticelli, Goya, and Ribera, among many others.
Galeria Humberto I
A magnificent façade, blind arches, glass roofs, and sculptural sets. One of those essential architectural works in the city.

Since the 16th century and in the district of Santa Brígida, where this gallery is situated, there was already a combination of paved and disorganised streets on which a large part of the city's commercial activity took place. Some time later, the district gained a worse reputation due to its crime and prostitution. However, at the end of the 19th century between 1887 and 1890, this impressive building was built as part of a regenerative policy for the area. From the main entrance, which leads to Vía San Carlo, a magnificent façade stands with blind arches that plays with all symbology of classical architecture. The journey round architectural and sculptural history continues inside the building. To your right, the four sculptures dedicated to the four seasons of the year rest above the blind arches. Under its enormous glass domes, this gallery is an interesting journey through time in the city of Naples.
Naples National Archaeological Museum

The only one of its kind in the world.
One of the reasons why the city of Naples has a large quantity of historical testimonies in its buildings, museums and streets is that it has always been a city that was longed for by kings and emperors. The city became a capital itself and was home to the royal residence for many years, and it also played an important role during the Roman era. Therefore, its archaeological museum located at number 19 on the square of Piazza Museo holds various collections which turn this museum into the only one of its kind in the world. There are four essential collections that you can not leave out on your visit. The Farnesio collection with artefacts from the Roman Empire; the collection from places such as Pompeii, Stabiae, Herculaneum and Boscoreale with remains that tell the story of the area of Vesuvius, and the collection of Stefano Borgia, which consists of collections from his own museum and Caserta that go deep into the city's prehistoric periods.
Castel dell'Ovo

Megaride and the legend of the magic egg.
On Megaride island, located at one end of the Gulf of Naples stands one of the most impressive buildings that you will find in the city. This is Castel dell'Ovo (or the Egg Castle), and it was erected by emperor Valentinian III during the 5th century. It seems like this curious building has one tower built over another for it to fit on this small surface but its most popular and curious story is the following. Its name comes from an ancient legend according to the classic poet, Virgilio, who hid a magic egg inside the building's foundations. If this egg were to get lost or break, the castle would do the same because the legend has it that the same luck applies to the egg and the building. Now, it's worth taking the chance just to see the views of the whole city from the viewpoint of its tallest tower.
The Cappella Sansevero
The disturbing history that surrounds the figure of Sansevero turns this chapel into an extremely interesting visit.

Next, we'll tell you one of the most disturbing stories about the city of Naples. On one of the labyrinthine streets in the centre, you can get to as far as the Cappella Sansevero. In this place, you'll find what's called Cristo Velato. Raimondo di Sangro or Sansevero, who was a descendent of one of the most noble and powerful families in the city was known as a sorcerer and necromancer. Even these days, he's a difficult character to name among the people of this place. They say that he invented several formulas in order to soften and harden all kinds of elements, and due to these experiments, he left us a collection of petrified bodies of unimaginable realism, unless you see them with your own eyes. Legend has it that he was able to bring the dead back to life. This possibly isn't the case but you'll think twice when you see these statues. This place has gone down in history as one of the Freemason's sanctuaries.

The buildings from all historic periods are preserved in this place, from the Roman Empire, to the 20th century and the most current trends. Stopping in the square of Piazza Plebiscito is proof of this. Looking at each side, you'll see the four most important buildings in the city, and each one of them represents a different historical period. Take a look at the Basilica de San Francesco di Paola. That enormous building is one of the signs of the Neapolitan influence in the city. It was a project completed by King Joachim Murat of Naples who was the emperor's confidant, and who commissioned this monumental church to be built in 1809. Due to the huge construction work it required this lasted until 1824, and even then it took until 1836 to be inaugurated.

Two Neapolitan aces.
Despite the square and this market being two of the most emblematic and oldest places in the city, they also keep some of Naples' cruellest stories. The Piazza Mercato dates back to the Roman period since this era was when it started to be used as a market square in the old city. During the Middle Ages however, it turned into the stage for public executions with the aim of terrifying and setting an example for the people. This place next to the surrounding church of Santa Maria del Carmine also suffered the Masaniello bombardments in 1647. A miracle is said to have occurred during this battle, as a shell entered the church and flew directly towards the cross of Christ, but Jesus' strength diverted its trajectory and the shell only damaged his crown of thorns. This has turned it into one of the city's magical places.

A giant ellipsis.
This gigantic elliptical square keeps the heart and origin of Naples, since residents and traders from Naples and surrounding areas used to come to this place in the 17th century. The first markets and cattle fairs were established here, then later the square also became a venue for celebrations during the 18th century, holding the most special festivities such as Christmas or Easter, where different stories of this religious tradition were represented. Emblem of the city.
This royal palace in the city is one of Naples's most recognised emblems, but the function what it was built for never materialised. It was 1601 in the city's streets and the Viceroy Fernando Ruiz de Castro expected a visit from King Philip III, which is why this gigantic construction was built which took years, but the visit never took place. Deliberately, this was a never-ending construction that had to wait until the arrival of the 19th century, in order to see its final completion. This place was of course the centre of Neapolitan political activity, especially since it became the monarch's residence in 1734. Although this is not the case nowadays, a visit will show that many of the city's historical parts are kept here, such as the Throne Room. There are usually interesting art exhibitions here too.
Castel Nuovo
Alfonso V of Aragon was fascinated by this castle and he settled down here after his journey from Spain: he lived here for the rest of his days.
Castello Maschio Angioino.
Also known as Castello Maschio Angioino, this castle keeps the memory of the relationship that existed between the Italian and French monarchies. The building was erected during the 18th century by order of the Anjou Crown, like nearly every monumental part of the city. However, this building served as a residence for Charles I of Anjou when he moved to Naples from the capital. Centuries later, and with the arrival of Alfonso V of Aragon, the city was prepared to welcome him as he deserved, and he commissioned the construction of an enormous triumphal arch at the entrance of the building, which proves that this could be called home from then onwards. This must have taken effect as the king did not set foot in Spain again. The story of this place has it that he never wanted to leave the city, as he was delighted by Neapolitan art and culture.
Teatro San Carlo

Inaugurated by Charles III.
This theatre is considered as Europe's first lyric theatre, which is why it has been declared as a World Heritage Site. It was inaugurated on 4th November 1737 under the reign of Charles III of Spain, as well as Naples and Sicily. What the monarchy was looking for was a theatre to replace the old Teatro San Bartolomew. In fact, there were many cultural initiatives that this king carried out in this city. In a hurried way, the theatre was constructed in just nine months. Nevertheless, they made way for one of the world's most important theatre stages. First of all, they held the Neapolitan School of Opera Buffa, being the comical side of opera which had a strong impact in the rest of the country. In 1816, the theatre suffered a fire that reduced the building's interior to ashes. However, Ferdinand VI took responsibility for refurbishing the theatre and he adapted it to the new times of his generation.

The Anjou Crown was the most influential dynasty that was left in the Neapolitan city. Proof of this are the numerous monuments they built which have lasted until our time. But the Duomo of Naples is different. It was inaugurated by Roberto de Anjou in 1314, though it was a project started by his grandfather, Carlos I, in 1285 who died during its construction. This gigantic and monumental building replaced its predecessor which was built by the emperor Constantine, and became the cathedral of the city of Naples after its inauguration. In addition, there is a secret kept in the interior of the building: the secret chapel. This place keeps the statue of the bust of Saint Januarius next to another 51 statuettes made of silver, which make up one the city's historic treasures. The story has it that the saint's head and blood are stored in this place.
