Vulqano Park
The best amusement park in Ecuador... With free entry!
Unforgettable moments
On the slopes of the Pichincha volcano, you'll find a very attractive option for the little ones (and for the not-so-little ones as well): Vulqano Park, the best amusement park in the country. It has over twenty installations designed for the entire family, from the very gentle to the very daring. Most interestingly, all the attractions are connected in some way to Ecuadorian traditions and folklore. The huge roller-coaster is especially impressive, which only the most adventurous are brave enough to ride. The surrounding area is no less impressive and visitors often combine a trip to this park with the nearby cable car to Cruz Loma. Entry to the park is free, making it an even more appealing option for a day trip outside the city.

This is the largest adventure park in Ecuador, a real shrine to all things fun. Beginning as a university project, this park ended up as a very special place for two key reasons. Firstly, because great times are guaranteed, which is essential when on holiday with the youngest members of the family. Its zip wires and buggy rides are bound to thrill any visitor and are ideal for the whole family. Secondly, because this is a great excuse to explore the natural surroundings of Quito: the forest rides are ideal for discovering this beautiful landscape and you'll be rewarded with some stunning views of the entire valley, especially when gliding over the canyons by zip wire. In fact, the park is large enough to see a great deal of Quito's stunning ecosystem. So, with the unbeatable scene now set, you only have to decide which activities you dare to do.

We all love a good bike ride!
One of the most enjoyable ways to get around the natural surroundings of the Ecuadorian capital is by bicycle. In fact, the city is equipped with endless kilometres of cycling lanes and different cycling routes, as well as a good selection of companies that organise hire and equipment. The lay of the land in Quito means that anyone can get on a bike and explore the city from top to bottom, discovering hidden corners that you wouldn't come across any other way. If you fancy a bit of mountain biking, take a look at the routes in the South area or Chaquiñán for trails designed for the more adventurous souls. On the other hand, for gentler routes or to combine cycling and walking, head for La Carolina, El Ejido and Alameda as these green areas will give you a breath of fresh air from a different perspective. This is an ideal activity for the whole family as you don't need to be in the best shape: enjoying the landscape is the real prize here.

Real national pride
The Teatro Bolívar theatre first opened in 1933. It was the work of the architectural firm Hoffman&Henon, which had previous designed key buildings all over the United States; giving an idea of the impact this building would have on the Quito skyline. When it opened, its 2,400 seats made it the largest theatre in the city and, as a result, the most important across the entire South American continent. On the other hand, its neoclassical architecture with arabesque touches ensured the city could be truly proud of its theatre, which would become the last addition to the historic centre of Quito. Unfortunately, in 1999 a terrible fire destroyed a large amount of the original furnishings, but it wasn't long before an ambitious project was launched to restore the theatre to its former glory. Fascinating!

The Casa de la Música has become the nerve centre of all musical activity and cultural life in Quito; no mean feat considering the capital offers endless possibilities for enjoying the arts. This impressive and modern building was built in 2003 in response to growing popular demand for more cultural spaces and it has come to host a range of specific events. Without a doubt, the Casa de la Música has gone above and beyond to meet this demand. Not only has it been named by the German firm BBM as one of the most outstanding cultural buildings thanks to its incredible interior architecture, but its perfect acoustics also make it the ideal venue for symphonic and chamber music. What's more, it has a number of other halls that host all kinds of cultural activities, such as exhibitions, presentations and workshops.

Without question, the night life in the Ecuadorian capital is second to none. From Thursday onwards, the city centre offers endless possibilities for all tastes, ramping up the fun as the weekend progresses. Raise the curtain!
The Ecuadorian capital has always had a very healthy music and theatre scene; however, in recent years, locals have been lacking a specialist theatre venue. The number of street shows in the city had been on the rise but these types of performances weren't often seen on stage. That all changed when ElTeatro opened in 2006 on the premises of the Iñaquito shopping centre: this is a venue dedicated exclusively to both regional theatre and timeless, classic plays. It has been a resounding success which, since it opened, has kept up a continuous programme of shows. What's more, in 2013, a sister venue opened in the Scala Shopping centre to keep up with the growing number of cultural and theatrical initiatives in the city.

This is a unique, very different shop. The clothing line has been a huge success and offers a good range of choice, while the accessories are also not to be missed: from hats to bracelets, rings and pendants that strike a perfect balance between folklore and design. What's more, its pseudo-anonymity makes it a strong contender for the most authentic market in the city. Despite always being very busy, the traffic here is mainly from locals and not tourists: another point in its favour. So, if you're looking for a memento or a gift from Quito that has a strong connection with the city and its culture, you've come to the right place. The market is full of artisan stalls where you'll find anything from clothes to precious metals in all shapes and sizes. The Olga Fisch shop is nothing like what you might think of as a normal shop. This Hungarian artist, who is most famous for her work as a painter and designer, was born in Budapest in 1901 but spent various stages of her life in Ecuador. Today, the Olga Fisch shop is home to the most popular and highest quality artisan products in the country, and its fame has spread across the entire continent. It is located on the Avenida de Colón and, as well as the shop, it also has a museum dedicated to archaeology and popular art related to the artist's work. The shop itself acts as an exhibition space for all the best artisans in the city; worth a visit for simply being there.

Bohemia par excellence
As soon as you step foot on this street, you'll see why it's known locally as the most bohemian street in the city. For many years, its unique, free-spirited atmosphere has been kept alive by a vibrant community of street musicians and artists. Its golden days were back in the 1930s, when poets, authors, painters and musicians would meet here every day to hone their craft. Today, it is home to a range of pretty artisan shops and restaurants, serving the best of the city's gastronomy. The corner dedicated to traditional games for children is a definite highlight, with puppets, rag dolls, yo-yos and hopscotch; a real treat for the little ones. What's more, in the evenings La Ronda comes alive with bars, terraces and restaurants that extend a warm welcome to all visitors, creating a magical and enticing atmosphere.

Artists from all over the city gather here every seven days to display their work in public, making this an ideal choice for art, shopping and a leisurely dose of fresh air. All day long, you'll find paintings and artwork in every form, crafts, clothes, musical instruments and so much more. All accompanied by a range of street performers and buskers providing the soundtrack to your day out in the park.

Shopping haven
Between the streets Jorge Washington, Juan León Mera and Reina Victoria, at the heart of the city centre, you'll find this urban artisan market which is one of the main shopping centres in the city. Its charm stems from its street-market style and strong sense of tradition. With over one hundred stalls, a large number of artisans bring their work here to be sold or simply displayed, creating an explosion of colour that never fails to impress. Diversity is a strong point here: fabrics, clothing, flags, wooden or mental utensils, jewellery, musical instruments and even food. You'll be spoilt for choice! The market, which opened in 2000, was devastated by a fire and came close to disappearing forever; however, like a phoenix from the ashes, it came back stronger than ever and soon became one of the most visited places in the city centre.

Without a doubt, the city's oldest market
Despite looking like a modern market, which wouldn't be out of place in an avant-garde and cosmopolitan city, this centre has been here since the early 19th century. What's more, most of the stalls have been run by the same families for over a hundred years; families that will treat you to the warmest and most welcoming service and advice. Although the market has been modernised over the years, it still has a strong traditional feel about it. At its 123 stalls, you'll find all the most typical local and national gastronomical products, as well as many opportunities to sample dishes prepared in a rustic, authentic way such as mote, llapingachos, yahuarlocro or caldo de gallina. You'll also find artisan goods and traditional products that are native to the local area. Ideal for finding the perfect gift!
Pucará de Rumicucho
Inca remains revealing the entruiging history of the city and its people.
Fascinating archaeological site
This archaeological area, on the outskirts of Quito, is on a hill not far from the middle of the world monument, in the Pichincha province. Pucará de Rumicucho was built by the Incas and although its exact dates are unknown, experts have dated the remains found here to between 1480 and 1500. The objects found on this hill suggest that this was a military site, a fortress built to defend the surrounding area from possible attacks from neighbouring tribes. Unsurprisingly, there is also evidence of later civilisations using this site. Other remains found here suggest that Pucará de Rumicucho may also have been used for religious ceremonies. You can find out more about this interesting proposal through the site's wealth of testimonies to the Inca civilisation. A very special way of exploring the power of this great civilisation before the arrival of the Spanish.
Parque Nacional Cotopaxi
A very special place: one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
A lofty proposal
The Cotopaxi national park is sixty kilometres from the capital. The peak after which it is named is the highest point in the park, at around 5,897 metres above sea level. This is also one of the most active volcanoes not only in the country but in the entire world. The presence of this type of active volcano creates an ecosystem that is very different to the surrounding area, making for a unique, natural habitat. As a result, this corner of Ecuador is home to flora and fauna that you won't find anywhere else in the country, such as rabbits, deer and wolves, as well as Andean gulls and the ever-popular condors who often nest on these sheer summits. If you enjoy visiting volcanoes, don't miss out on a trip to Rumiñahui which is nearly five thousand metres high.

Where the magic happens
When in Quito, it's easy to see why its Historic Centre is a World Heritage Site. The Plaza de San Blas has been the gateway to this architectural wonderland since the 16th century, which is when the majority of the city was developed, following a spike in the population and the modernisation of the existing structures. This square, on top of being one of the prettiest points in the capital, also has a very magical feel to it, especially at night. Despite being one of the largest and busiest squares in the city, when the sun begins to set the new lighting system beautifully offsets the colonial buildings and lush greenery against the stunning architecture. A very romantic setting, a pleasant toing and froing of people and, all in all, an ideal choice for a magical evening stroll.
Pululahua
This inactive volcano has its very own village.
Warning: An inhabited crater!
The Pululahua volcano is, quite literally, not far from the middle of the world and has been inactive for thousands of years. Today, it is a haven for some of the wildest flora and fauna in Ecuador and, most interestingly, it is also one of the very few inhabited craters in the world. Yes, that's right: being inactive for so long, a small village has developed here. You can reach the village by foot, through the lush valley surrounding the volcano, giving you the chance to spot a wide variety of animals including many stunning species of birds, as well as bromelias, orchids and countless other beautiful plants. We recommend continuing on foot to the summit of the volcano to get a feel for the sheer vastness of Ecuador and a unique view of the capital and surrounding area.

Historic and very central
How about a tour around the city centre to discover the secrets of Quito and explore its rich history? The central street calle García Moreno, where you'll find the Palacio de Carondelet or the Presidential Palace, is known locally as the Calle de las Siete Cruces or the street of the seven crosses, as each cross represents a key historical event. The first and the second correspond to the churches of Santa Bárbara and La Concepción, which were the first monasteries in the city, dating back to the 16th century; the third and the fourth to the Cathedral and the Sagrario church, places where the independence of the country was proclaimed in 1809; and you'll find the last three in the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, the Iglesia de Carmen Alto and the Capilla de San Lázaro. Guápulo
Shrines, trails and one of the most bohemian neighbourhoods in the city.
Follow the trail
The name Guápulo comes from the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe of Spain, which can be found inside this church and museum, and that was made by the Spanish sculptor Diego de Robles. This church, which was the first Marian shrine in Ecuador was built in the 17th century. However, there's a secret you should know: just a few metres from the church, you'll find the 'Camino de los Conquistadores' which is named after the Orellana expedition that passed through the area. Follow this paved trail to the viewpoint at the very end as this is the ideal place to begin your visit, offering some spectacular views of valley and the surrounding area. The shops, bars and restaurants in this area are a good indication that you are in one of the most bohemian neighbourhoods in the city.
La nariz del diablo
This train journey has a valuable reward: a spectacular mountain experience.
How the devil do we get up there?
Head south of Quito and you'll find the city of Riobamba, where you can catch the train known as 'La nariz del diablo' or the devil's nose. In 1897, a project was launched to build the most difficult rail route in the world, as this stretch of railway was known, which would cut across previously impassable sections of the Andes. The engineers working on this project would ask themselves over and over "how the devil do we get a train up there?" and the saying has stuck ever since. Today, it is the most scenic way of getting to the Alausí area, a mountainous journey famous for the sheer steepness of the tracks. There are three departures every day and the journey takes a little over two hours. Interestingly, the train stops midway along the route so passengers can take in the dizzying ascent and spectacular scenery.
Boulevard de las Naciones Unidas

A stand against climate change
This area of the city, which is also known as Jardines de Quindes, is considered as one of the best exponents of urban, street art in the country. On the Boulevard de las Naciones Unidas, over sixty figures were decorated by local and national artists, representing the very best of the country's thriving art scene. Nixon Córdoba was the sculptor chosen to make the figures, which are each a little over two metres high. Most interestingly, this initiative is not just about art, but also the climate: the aim of the project was to raise awareness about the environment and about the dangers of climate change. In this respect, the figure of the birds becomes especially significant as Ecuador is one of the countries with the most diverse range of bird species in the world. This avenue has become one of the most popular and visited urban attractions in the capital.

If you're a nature lover, don't think twice: you can even reach the summit.
Exceptional panoramic views
Ecuador is in a region with very dynamic geology; as a result, seismic and volcanic activity has had a huge influence on the history, development and society fabric of the country. In fact, Quito is surrounded by a number of volcanoes. One of these is the Pichincha volcano, a crater that has been inactive for many years. However, in 1660 it covered the entire city in ash, causing a wave of panic among the inhabitants. It came close to doing the same in 1999, when the city awoke to an enormous grey cloud rising from the volcano. That said, this peak is one of the places you simply must visit if you're a fan of nature: there is a mountain refuge just a few metres from the summit, offering unforgettable views of this giant and the neighbouring volcanoes of Cotopaxí, Pasochoa, Chimborazo and Llinizas.

High point of the city
This is the highest cable car in South America, beginning at 2,950 metres above sea level and climbing to a height of no less than 4,050 metres. Impressive, right? It will take you to the Cruz de Loma, which is the summit of the Pichincha volcano and one of the most beautiful places in the capital. If you're well acclimatised to the altitude, the short walk to the summit is unforgettable; from the top of the volcano, you can see various Andean peaks, including Cayambe, Antisana, Pasochoa, Rummiñahui and Cotopaxí, and you'll be treated to a unique and unparalleled view of the city. If you're in the centre of town trying all the best dishes in Quito, it's time you sampled some of the local drinks as well and discovered an authentic, local tradition. There is a huge variety to choose from with something for all tastes. Why not start with the famous morocho, one of the most traditional and widely produced beverages. It is made from a mixture of cereals, milk, cinnamon and sugar that needs to be soaked overnight to develop its characteristic taste. You should also try the rosero, known by the locals as comeibebe. It is made from boiled wheat and a wide range of fruits, all mixed with herbs, sugar and cinnamon: the last two being key ingredients in the majority of drinks made in Quito. There is also a long tradition of mistelas, with mint, peach and mandarin being the most common flavours.

The traditional Iñaquito market is in the north of the city and is one of the largest in Quito. Divided into two sections, the largest is reserved for the numerous stalls and shops, as this is one of the biggest markets in the city. Although not strictly a wholesale market, it isn't uncommon for owners of restaurants and bars to come here in search of seafood or vegetables. It has one of the best reputations in the country and has been open now for over thirty years. In the other section, there are various tables set up for visitors to sample dishes made with local produce. There is a huge amount of choice, but we recommend the meats, the encebollados or the mote con chicharrón. You can also order a tasting menu, which is perfect for filling up on traditional, local cuisine. Ready for a treat?

Two recipes in one
If you want to try two authentic flavours in Quito's traditional cuisine, this is our personal recommendation: fried sea bass with ceviche. Despite its rather dubious appearance, this is one of Quito's most typical dishes, a creation based on the combination of two different recipes: a portion of coated and fried sea bass that, just before being served, is bathed in a black clam and langoustine ceviche. And if it didn't look unusual enough, the black clams may come as a bit of a surprise: both the shell and the meat are a very dark colour and they have a very intense flavour. They are, in fact, a very sorted-after product that you'll only find in certain areas of Ecuador and Peru. One of the best places to try this dish is on the top floor on the Mercado Central, where it is prepared in a very traditional way, in homage to the great culinary tradition of the city.

Trading for seventy years
Despite being remodelled on several occasions, Quito's central market, the Mercado Central, has remained a gastronomical point of reference for over seventy years and still feels like a traditional, local market. Three key products stand out from the huge range on offer here: the flowers, juices and colourful ceviches. The market has a long tradition of selling top quality flowers, with people coming from all over the city to buy from the best of the bunch. The juices here are another star product; all freshly squeezed and packed with vitamins, they are a true celebration of the region's native fruits and colours. And last but not least, its famous ceviches: on the top floor you'll find an area with tables that opens first thing in the morning, serving countless variations of this unusual way of preparing fish. It goes without saying that this is one of Quito's star dishes.

Colaciones: a closely guarded secret
Colaciones are an original Quito creation and perhaps the best-kept secret of any local family; shrouded in so much secrecy, they have come close to disappearing all together. They are made from honey and peanuts or almonds, along with other ingredients like lemon, sugar and some secret elements added by each family, rolled into a small white ball. The flavour, which is very sweet, is unique as you'll never find two that are quite the same, which is true secret of their success. In the centre of the city, specifically on the streets Bolívar and Chimborazo, you'll find a shop called Las Colaciones de la Cruz Verde. Since 1915, this family business has been making batches of these delightful sweets on a daily basis. However, the family recipe dates back much further. Canelazos

How about a toast?
Canelazo is one of the most typical alcoholic drinks in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. It originated in the Andes where, due to the altitude, strong drinks and other products have been consumed for centuries to ward off altitude sickness. This particular drink is made from water, cinnamon, sugar and aguardiente made from sugar cane, as well as a range of local ingredients such as orange or lemon juice. Interestingly, this drink is served warm as it was traditionally used to acclimatise and heat the body. Over time, it has become so popular that today, it is the number one festive drink across the country, especially during Christmas. You'll find it at any of the bars in the centre of Quito and it is commonly drunk during meals, especially in the winter months.

Culinary miscellany
You could say that Quito cuisine is a mix of different culinary traditions, starting with pre-Columbian dishes and adding the Spanish products and customs from the colonial era. In recent years, this unique blend has become a big hit among the international avant-garde as an eclectic, cosmopolitan and delicious style of food. Going back to its roots, don't miss out on dishes like locro de papas, an Inca potato stew halfway between a soup and a broth. Pernil, a dish from the colonial period, is also not to be missed. Interestingly, pigs were first introduced here by Spanish colonisers and it wasn't long before they spread rapidly across the country. As a result, countless pork dishes and ways of preparing this meat emerged, with pork shanks cooked in lemon, annatto, oregano, salt and garlic becoming one of the most popular. Over time, thin strips of pork served with bread, tomato and onion would also become a firm favourite. Delicious!
Museo Numismático

The former building of the Pichincha Bank, later the Central Bank of Ecuador, is today home to the highly interesting Museo Numismático. This Neoclassical museum houses a collection of over thirteen thousand coins from the pre-Colombian period to present day. It not only covers the development of the Ecuadorian currency, but also explains ancient types of exchange and bartering and the subsequent development of money. Visitors can also buy medals, catalogues and commemorative pieces, making this museum a must for collectors. The impressive building was built in 1916 and forms part of the World Heritage Site thanks to its architectural importance. It is located in the heart of the capital, opposite the 'La Compañía' church, making it impossible to miss when exploring the city centre.
Mueso Camilo Egas
The history of Ecuadorian art would not be the same without this great master.
Essential artist
Camilo Egas was one of the country's most important artists, who is mainly known for his paintings. Born at the end of the 19th century, he made an invaluable contribution for many years to the development of Ecuadorian identity. Over a number of different rooms, this centre focuses on the various phases of his work. These phases included his involvement in national expressionism, where he played a key role in shaping national identity during the 20th century. His Indigenist creations are also of great significance, a retrospective phase in which he focused heavily on the perception of the pre-Colombian world and on indigenous studies, leading to his later period of formalistic romanticism. However, it is not just Egas' paintings that are so important, but the powerful message behind his art, linked to the need of a nation to define and safeguard its own unique identity.
Centro Cultural Itchimbia

Art at altitude
At nearly three thousand metres above sea level, the Itchimbia hill is one of the most magical places in the capital. Before the arrival of the Spanish, this place was used by the Incas and the Quitus as a place of prayer and worship. As a result, civilisation after civilisation have used this place as a peaceful, secluded retreat, especially after the arrival of the Europeans. The Itchimbia cultural centre is at the very top of the hill. The palace-like structure is made from steel and zinc imported from the German city of Hamburg and it bears a striking resemblance to the palace of Les Halles in Paris. It was installed here in 1889 and has been one of the most important centres for exhibitions and events in Quito ever since. It usually hosts literary presentations or art and photography exhibitions, and it has also been used as the backdrop for President Rafael Correa's address to the nation.

Another authentic cultural must
This museum isn't often listed among the most popular in Quito, but it is certainly one of the best for exploring the roots of the country and its capital city. It covers an impressive array of the indigenous cultures in Ecuador before the country became known as it is today. In its six thematic rooms, you'll find diverse aspects of these cultures ranging from Shamanism to the clothing and handmade artefacts of pre-Colombian and Andean tribes, forging a unique world view with nature as the central element. The best part is definitely the chapter that isn't always told in the history books; the large part of Ecuadorian tradition that emerged from the people brought across from Africa and their influence on the development of the creole population. Don't miss the famous 'ojo del sol'. You'll love it!

On the slopes of the Pichincha
The Museo de Sitio La Florida is located on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano, which is one of the most symbolic of the Ecuadorian capital. The museum stands on the site of a necropolis discovered by chance during the construction of a football pitch in 1980. Its collection includes numerous archaeological remains from civilisations dating from the 3rd to the 7th centuries. What's more, certain pieces in this collection also indicate human presence as far back as around 2,000 BC, which is much earlier than was previously thought. The graves here can be seen from the wooden walkway around the perimeter of the site, a place where a significant amount of the imaginary and symbolism used by ancient civilisations was discovered. A national icon
We can confidently say that the National Museum of Quito is the most important in the entire country. It was opened in 1969 by the Central Bank of Ecuador and has been run by the Ministry of Culture ever since. Its mission is to showcase the most representative elements of all the pre-Colombian cultures that lived in this region, not just the Incas, and to trace the different phases of national artistic trends which developed after the Spanish colonisation. And let's just say that mission accomplished would be an understatement. Among this vast array of pre-Colombian, creole and contemporary cultures, the ceremonial masks made from pure gold and the Sala Colonial are the main highlights. The coin collection is also not to be missed, offering an interesting insight into the economic and social development of the country through to present day.

The great history of Quito
Do you want to learn about the history of Quito? Then this, my friend, is the place for you: The Museo de la Ciudad, or city museum, is the best place to explore the city in depth. It is located in a historic building dating back to 1565 which was, for nearly four centuries, one of the first hospitals in the country, the Hospital San Juan de Dios. Patients would travel to this hospital from all over the continent, as Ecuador was still not a consolidated country. This museum has a curious and interesting collection with a strong focus on daily life in the city, taking an urban-, citizen- and family-based approach as opposed to an institutional or historical one. As a result, it is a really useful tool for understanding the characteristic components of the local identity. It is located in the centre of the city.

This museum is actually called the Museo de Arte Precolombino Casa del Alabado, and it is one of the city's most comprehensive centres in this field. Its aim is to safeguard artistic heritage from before the arrival of the Spanish, and the vast majority of the work here is in excellent condition. The permanent collection has all types of sculptural and architectural elements, as well as other pieces that show and symbolise the customs and mysticism of indigenous cultures, especially from the Inca civilisation. Lest we forget that the city of Quito was of course raised on the site of an old Inca city. It is truly fascinating to see how these indigenous cultures explained and understood the relationship between human beings, nature and the gods through these elements. If you want to know what life was like hundreds of years ago, this is the place to come.

The most difficult train in the world
The arrival of the railway was a real milestone for the country and, above all, for the capital: in June 1908, the whole city came out to welcome the train and to celebrate this new connection between the coast and the mountains. What's more, people who had to leave home to find work could now come back to visit. This railway was the fruit of a great deal of political, economic and social manoeuvring and led to a large number of cafeterias, restaurants and hotels opening in the district of Chimbacalle. Today, in this same place, visitors can see the locomotive with its carriages and all the other elements of this great machine. There is also a small museum that tells the story of the so-called 'most difficult train in the world', from its history to the routes it travelled, giving a good idea of why it is so famous.

The work of Oswaldo Guayasamín
Oswaldo Guayasamín is probably the most famous Ecuadorian artist and one of the most renowned on the entire continent. He worked in many different mediums such as sculpture, painting, graphic art, murals and drawing during the 20th century and is perhaps best known for his drawings. In 2002, an exhibition of his work was installed in the museum Museo Casa Taller Guayasamín. Through pain, anger, tenderness and, above all, protest, this collection will take you on a journey through the majority of the artist's work, explaining his very unique concept of the human self. What's more, the La Capilla del Hombre art museum plays a key role in unlocking the national psyche and that of its neighbouring countries; lest we forget, the fight for independence and the development of national identity were a common part of everyday life. There is also an area dedicated to pre-Colombian elements related to this great artist.

A neo-Gothic giant
This gigantic building, the Basilica of the National Vow, is also known as the Basílica de San Juan or Consagración de Jesús and is one of the best examples of neo-Gothic architecture in Ecuador. In terms of size, it is the largest church in this architectural style on the entire South American continent. What's more, it's also famous for its unusual decoration: a large proportion of its decorative elements are recreations of the fauna and flora of the Pacific and the Galapagos Islands, instead of the typical Gothic motifs. For example, you'll find turtles, blue-footed boobies, various species of monkeys and other animals such as armadillos. You can also see them up close, thanks to the stairway system around the bellower. At the top of the building, there is a cafeteria with some unmissable views; at nearly one hundred metres high, it offers a stunning panoramic picture of the city.
San Francisco Plaza and Church

Sublime grandeur
The church that stands in the middle of the San Francisco square is the largest catholic church in any historic centre on the continent. This is why it is known as the El Escorial of the New World, in reference to the enormous royal complex in Madrid, Spain, with the church, adjoining atrium and the square forming one of the most important historical complexes in the city. The square was raised on the site of a former Inca market back in the 15th and 16th century, becoming the first and main market in the city: over time, it became a common site for protests and social activities, and it is now one of the main trading centres in Quito. Around the square, in addition to the church after which it is named, you'll see and be able to visit a number of buildings that reflect the great legacy of both Spain and Quito, such as the Casa de los Lazos, the Gangotena Palace or the Pichincha Bank.

The city's main square
Take note, this is the main square in the city. The Plaza Grande is flanked by the Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop's Palace and the Municipal Palace, four exclusive buildings that mark out one of the most attractive corners of the country. The Independence Monument, which has stood at the centre of the square since 1909, is especially eye-catching. It forms a very striking image, with a condor breaking free from its chains while a lion lies injured at its side (representing Ecuador and Spain, respectively) and the Roman goddess Libertas holding the torch of freedom over both creatures. The square is always full of life, at just a few metres from the Plaza Chica and the Pasaje Espejo, which a great number of the city's inhabitants pass through every day as they go about their business. An interesting tip? Pay a visit to the barber shop on the ground floor of the Presidential Palace.

Undeniable Inca heritage
Despite the huge earthquake that devastated Quito in 1917, it still stands proud as the best preserved city in Latin America. Its historic centre, which was developed during the 16th century on the site of a former Inca settlement, has hardly changed and its original cobbled streets and numerous colonial houses and monuments have survived the passage of time and the Spanish rule of the city. The combination of all these elements is amazingly beautiful and, unsurprisingly, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The Santo Domingo churches or the Monastery of the Society of Jesus are good examples of the continued presence of colonising and hegemonic European powers through until the 19th century, resulting in an artistic collage of architectural styles showcasing the best of the baroque, Mudejar, Flemish and Hispanic-Italian traditions, all mixed with the pre-Colombian culture.

Artistic and historical treasure
The corner of the central streets García Moreno and Rocafuerte is one of the key places in the city: not only will you have arrived at the old town of Quito but also the popular museum Museo de la Ciudad and the start of the very well-known Calle de las Siete Cruces. But that's not all, it is also the site of the El Carmen Alto monastery, one of the most important in the city and the leading monastery of the Discalced Carmelites in Quito, a religious order that played a key role in the evangelization of the country. Saint Mariana of Jesus lived and died at this monastery and thousands of people flock here to pay homage to this famous saint. Its impressive works of art, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, complete the picture.

Welcome to the middle of the world. The city of Quito is located at the exact latitude of 0 - 0´- 0”, a unique fact that was celebrated in 1836 with this monument to the middle of the world, on the exact line of the Equator. Unsurprisingly, is one of the most visited monuments in the city with people queuing up to pose with one foot in each hemisphere. It is just thirteen kilometres north of the city in the San Antonio parish, where you'll also find the city's ethnographic museum, the Museo Etnográfico de Quito. There is also a viewpoint around thirty metres tall with some very special views of the Ecuadorian capital: these stunning panoramic views are a real must.

In one word? Grandiose
Interestingly, the Church of the Society of Jesus, which is the main Jesuit church in the city, has several names: Templo de Salomón a América del Sur, the Ascua de Oro or El Mejor Templo Jesuítico del Mundo; the latter, (the best Jesuit church in the world) after the sheer beauty of the building and the treasures to be found inside. However, it is known locally as simply 'La Compañía'. The architecture is the best example of baroque style in the country and perhaps even the entire continent. Built from local volcanic stone, it has a very unique tone and colour graduation, and its artistic relics are nothing short of spectacular. A real must during your time in Quito, you'll be amazed at the main altarpiece by Bernardo de Legarda and the numerous pillars, domes, vaults and decorative elements lavishly coated in gold leaf.

In-between baroque and Moorish
Bernardo de Legarda is one of the most famous names in the history of Ecuadorian art; you'll find references to this great artist all over the city. This is one of the main reasons to visit the Iglesia de La Merced, or Church of Mercy, as it is home to some of his finest work, such as the stone statue after which the church is named. Among its many other charms, the church's unique style, straddling the baroque and Moorish traditions, is one of the capital's most impressive architectural features. A stroll around the La Merced square in which the church is located comes highly recommended as does the sun dial which has been keeping time since the 17th century. You'll love it!

Eclectic masterpiece
This cathedral was built between 1562 and 1565, as part of the Spanish evangelising mission. As in other South American countries, this was just the first stage in a long process of changes and restorations that has led to a spectacular assortment of styles. As a result, this is one of the most important building on the continent from an artistic and architectural perspective: for example, the cathedral's façade features baroque, Mudejar, rococo, neoclassical and neo-Gothic elements. Inside, you'll find priceless works of arts such as the Sábana Santa, the Muerte de la Virgen and the Negociación de San Pedro, alongside the coffins of various key figures in Ecuadorian history. Interestingly, an age-old ceremony is still held here over Easter: The Arrastre de Caudas or the Dragging of Capes.

Up yonder
This statue is named after the hill on which it stands, which is one of the most popular viewpoints in Quito. The hill, which divides the city into two halves, was suggested in 1950 as a good place for the Virgin of El Panecillo statue so it could be seen from anywhere in the city, although it wasn't installed here until 1975. Also known as the Virgin of Quito, the statue is made of around seven thousand pieces of aluminium and has a number of very eye-catching features including a snake, a globe, a crown or the Virgin's unusual wings. The surrounding building is home to a very interesting museum about the history and legend of the monument. A recommendation? Take some time to enjoy the views from this site, they're spectacular!
