The Rock Café in Corralejo

We suggest a different culinary plan for dining out in Fuerteventura: it's the Rock Café located in Corralejo. To the north of the island, in the coastal town of La Oliva, you'll find this nature reserve that offers one of the best natural places that you can enjoy during the day, as the coastal walks among the dunes are relaxing for travellers. But when the evening comes, we suggest that you drop by the Rock Café, where Mexican cuisine is combined with cocktails and local drinks with hamburgers, sandwiches, nachos with guacamole, salads, and an endless choice for all tastes. The Rock Café is also livened up with rock and reggae musical performances in which the atmosphere is extremely different, very enjoyable, and which manages to break the peace that reigns in this part of the island. The party at the Rock Café lasts until well into the early hours of the morning.

Nouvelle cuisine
El Cotillo is a nice little village located on the north west corner of the island, which is popular for having large restaurants and the best fish on the island; so much so that the number of bars and restaurants has multiplied over the last few years. Despite this, the area is still populated with only a few residents where you can enjoy both the sea and the mountains from the cliffs to the beach of Playa del Castillo. In the centre of the village, you'll find the Vaca Azul, which is a restaurant that enjoys one of the terraces with the best views of the island and is situated right next to the sea shore. This establishment is known for the exquisite preparation of their fish and shellfish dishes, which are obviously gathered from around the local area. Their cuisine is somewhat more experimental than the usual kind, as they move away a little from traditional recipes by garnishing dishes with their own touches that turn them into real works of art. A delight for your senses!

Can you smell fish?
In the southern area of the island, away from the rest of towns and villages, you'll find the Jandía peninsula, which is believed to have been an island itself thousands of years ago. However, both platforms of land were joined as a result of a volcanic eruption. This area is one of the most peaceful and desolate on the island, making it the perfect place for getting away from all the urban traffic. At the end of the peninsula, passing the Punta Jandía Lighthouse, there is a small village called Puertito de la Cruz where you'll find a cosy family restaurant called El Caletón: this place offers a spectacular terrace where you can enjoy a peace haven looking out towards the sea. You'll have the opportunity to taste an impressive fish soup made with grouper and other fish from the area, but they are also specialists in fish stews, so here you can taste one of the best sancochos in Fuerteventura.

You will lick your fingers
Not all dishes in Fuerteventura are based on fish, as the island also offers an important variety of meat and some recipes capable of convincing even the most demanding palates, among which one of the most prized dishes is cabrito. Even though there are countless ways of making cabrito by even serving it in stews or with papas arrugadas (crinkle-cut chips), our personal recommendation is that you taste the traditional version: oven-roasted with a side dish. There are many restaurants throughout the island where you can try it, so it won't be difficult to find. Since it's an animal which has been reared on the land, the quality is assured, so it's practically the same wherever you go, and of course it's a good reason to visit the centre of Fuerteventura, which is the typical area for livestock. For example, the region of Antigua is home to one of the most stunning areas if we are talking about landscapes, as well as numerous restaurants where you can try this meat and others from the island.

And if we're talking about stews…
Perhaps the favourite, and the most traditional dish on the island is sancocho. Although the recipe is also made on the rest of the islands, and even on the American continent, Fuerteventura has its own way of making Sancocho: going deep into the fishing tradition of the region, the typical local fish used are usually Atlantic wreckfish, corvina or burro. The fish is traditionally desalted, and then the papas arrugadas, are added along with the sweet potatoes and the sauce. The latter can vary being either a green or red colour, depending how spicy you want the chunks to be. As you can appreciate, we are talking about basic ingredients which have turned into the most common recipe for the island's fishing and farming families over hundreds of years. To try sancocho, we recommend you to visit the port.

A traditional product if ever there was one
The hard, barren, and wild nature of the island, and the fact that it has been kept isolated for centuries resulted in an unusual ecosystem and produced a different gastronomy, which is marked by such unusual conditions. In this way, the island's dry yet fertile earth used to feed local goats that produced a very special and different milk, which is characterised by its aromatic qualities, and for being rich in fat. One of the most typical, tasty, and prized products is made from this milk, which is Majorero cheese. This cheese doesn't only form the base of Fuerteventura's gastronomy, its qualities are so special that it has also become highly regarded on an international level, and its intense flavour will no doubt have had something to do with this. The Majorero cheese making process has remained intact for centuries, and it's a real feast!

A true culinary tradition
It is not easy to establish the border between Fuerteventura's gastronomy and the rest of the Canary Islands, as they all have a remote and desert-like history that was mixed for centuries with the civilizations that arrived to these lands, from the different crowns of European dynasties, to the colonial cultures from the American continent. The famous dish of papas arrugadas (or crinkle-cut chips) came from the American continent and it's definitely one of the most popular dishes in the archipelago. On this occasion, we suggest a really interesting variation for you: papas arrugadas with pejines - a real symbol of island gastronomy. Pejines are small and typical fish from these local waters which are dried in the sun and then either oven cooked or flame-grilled. The really special mix of flavours will not leave you feeling indifferent. Where can you try this tasty dish? At any restaurant with views of the sea in Puerto del Rosario would be a good choice.

A journey of a culinary nature
The region of Tiscamanita is located in the south central part of the island where you will find La Gayría, which is a huge estate of five thousand square metres used for harvesting all foods that they offer which is naturally all genuine Majorero produce. Inside this estate, you'll find three rural houses (in which you can stay, by the way), and a vegetable garden where they grow the island's typical tomatoes, and fruit and vegetables of the region among which some of these are very exotic. This regional agricultural centre offers you a tour during which you'll learn the different techniques and processes that were used to feed the island's inhabitants since ancient times: from the very famous Majorero cheese, to recipes that are a little more modern, such as the sweets and desserts made in the bakery next to the estate, which will be a delight for your taste buds!

His great relationship with the island
The man from Bilbao, Miguel de Unamuno, was vice-chancellor rector of the University of Salamanca and one of the prime examples in the generation of 98 was obliged to reside on the island of Fuerteventura during a period of his life. It was during the year of 1924 when the dictator Primo de Rivera stripped him from his teaching responsibilities and sent him into exile in the most remote and inhospitable place, according to his own criteria, and this was how Unamuno arrived here to live over five months. During this time, the writer ended up falling in love with Fuerteventura, and started different works on the island; whether it be a theme based on Fuerteventura, or dedicated to gathering expressions, variations of the language, and Majorero vocabulary. Nowadays, the house that the great author lived in that year in the old Hotel Fuerteventura keeps its doors open to show the work and the memories that he left on Canarian land.

Born in Madrid, Nuria del Pino moved to the Canary Islands as a child where she has decided to make her permanent residence to date. She is presently considered as one of the most dynamic and multi-talented artists on the island scene, having developed a great career with painting being a real spear head. She also had the luck of travelling round the world and gained in-depth knowledge of cinema, design, sculpture, and photography, which allowed her to broaden her artistic spectrum and horizon. That's why she decided to open this art gallery, which is named after her, and based in her host village of Lajares. The gallery is an original nerve centre where she carries out a complete review of her activity, including a workshop, exhibition room, and a shop where you can approach the work of an artist who addresses the island of Fuerteventura itself as the main theme of her creations.

A tribute to the great artist
This museum is located in the very centre of Puerto del Rosario which is responsible for paying tribute to one of the island's most important artistic figures. Juan Ismael was a painter and poet who also practised other disciplines such as sculpture. He stood out due to his surrealist works which, together with his literary side, placed him as one of the great avant-garde writers of the Canary Islands. Not only was he considered as the most popular artist for decades in Fuerteventura, this was the case throughout the whole archipelago, and his creations had great relevance beyond the borders of the region. Centro de Arte Juan Ismael was opened with the intention of continuing this integral artistic exploration that the artist had spread. Nowadays, it's a cultural centre that includes a good number of exhibitions, activities, and workshops, and it's purpose is to be a creative area in which it makes space for artistic expressions that move away from traditional norms.

Mamma mía!
This museum was surprisingly opened by the desire and inspiration of an Italian, and has been running since 2014, presenting a very curious collection: this area is based on various exhibitions of toys, collectors figures, and pieces of model-work from all over the world. This art has a high number of followers on the planet, up to the point that the Dreams House Museum is considered as one of the most important in Europe. The main Italian brands with regard to models are present here, and this transalpine country is one of the strong leaders. For all these reasons, we recommend spending an afternoon to visit these exhibitions so that you can carefully observe their collections, which range from international monuments, to historic scale armies, recalling famous battles. You can also see some really special doll's houses that unintentionally take you back in time.

Inside and outside
On the street of Alcalde Carmelo Silvera in the middle of the Betancuria region, there is a house that attracts attention due to its gabled slate roof on the building's exterior with a wooden underside that faces inside the museum. Its balcony predominates the main entrance and has a slender stairway to access the main floor from outside the building. You have arrived at the sacred art museum named Museo de Arte Sacro, which is a building that served as the residency for the higher church ranks in the past. Nowadays, this museum has reconverted into one of the most important exhibitions of religious art on the island, and the rest of the archipelago: an artistic collage shows the evolution of the church in Fuerteventura with collections of paintings and engravings, to the attire and symbology used in the liturgy of the church since its arrival on the island back in the 15th century.

Majorero x-rays
As if it were vertical x-ray of the island, Cueva del Llano makes an introspection of its insides by dissecting Fuerteventura's earth: on this visit, you'll be able to see fossils and the remains of animals that lived here more than 800,000 years ago. You'll also be able to find and interesting interpretation centre around the cave where the island's different evolutional steps are displayed and numbered by means of its precious animals, minerals, and other remains. The history of all these things will be explained and put into context during the underground excursion. The curious 'Opilion' spider can also be found in here, which has a shape that is characteristic of this place since it's the only ecosystem that combines the suitable conditions for its survival. Together with another seven arthropods, this type of spider forms one of the most studied and observed species due to its risk of becoming extinct.

In the Tostón
This particular centre is located in the Tostón Lighthouse. Although its structure wasn't one of the most effective, since its lack of height meant that it was rapidly superseded by another two subsequent towers, this is undoubtedly one of the island's emblems. The Tostón Lighthouse was built at the same time as the Pechiguera Lighthouse was erected on the neighbouring island of Lanzarote, and when the Punta Entallada Lighthouse was raised on Lobos Island. All of these lighthouses are for indicating the well known Bocaina strait. During your visit to this museum, you'll discover the hidden details of the profession which has kept the island alive since prehistoric times: from old-fashioned ways and fishing tools, to the most modern techniques, which makes a complete review of its relation with the Atlantic Ocean. In the area surrounding the lighthouse, you will also have the opportunity to contrast its nature with what you saw inside the museum.

An essential visit to participate in the roots of Majorero art.
A source of island culture
Manuel Delgado Camino is one of the greatest and most well known promoters of Canarian art on the island of Fuerteventura, and in the archipelago in general. He has been interested in this field since the 70s, and has opened up areas and initiatives that show Canarian disciplines and techniques with a special emphasis on the Majorero essence. During 1991, in the house where Blas Curbelo once lived, Camino opened an area that was going to be the origin of the present Canarian art centre named Centro de Arte Canario: the interior of the house was used for exhibitions and workshops, mainly consisting of visual arts by artists from the island. However, the exterior of the house was also gradually used to exhibit sculptures and other works that were worthy of being exhibited. Located in front of the popular Casa de los Coroneles, this building is the centre of Majorero art nowadays, and it's a real must-visit if you want to know the roots of the island's culture.

That magical product
The difficult geographic position of the islands, which has kept them isolated during centuries, and their desert-like nature has made the archipelago's population fully optimize the little resources at their disposal. Besides agriculture, stockbreeding, and craftwork, the Majorero island has utilised salt from the land to convert it into a very important product as part of its commercial activity. This situation resulted in the creation of the Salinas del Carmen in the heart of Antigua, and made the most of its special and natural conditions. Nowadays, this museum shows how water was desalinated by means of different natural processes, and you can also see the lime kilns and wells. This desalination plant was commissioned by Mr. Francisco Bautista de Lugo y Saavadra during the 18th century, and the benefits that the salt from Fuerteventura provided in the fields of food and medicine were already known during the conquest era.

The essence of Fuerteventura
In the heart of the village of Tefía, next to Puerto del Rosario, you'll find this ecomuseum named Ecomuseum La Alcogida: this complex of houses has become a journey through life on the island over the years. Going deep into the period of the 19th century, the combination of seven houses is able to show all native aspects of the Majorero civilization, including some of their own constructions made by wealthy and poorer families. A tour round the different professions that the local residents sustained in the area, ranging from traditional ways of working with precious metals and craftwork, to agricultural and cattle farming is also offered inside these typical stone houses with gable roofs. This is one of the best ways to approach and get inside the world of Fuerteventura, and the visit also includes a canteen where you can refresh yourself with traditional drinks, as well as a souvenir shop.
The Punta Martiño Lighthouse on Lobos Island
This small island which includes a lighthouse, offers one of the best panoramic views of Fuerteventura.
A trio of lighthouses
We have just arrived at the only official construction built on Lobos Island: together with the Tostón Lighthouse (in El Cotillo), and the Pechiguera Lighthouse (on the island of Lanzarote), this lighthouse forms a trio of watchtowers which indicate the maritime route that ships must cross to avoid both islands. This is known as the "Estrecho de Bocaina" (or the Bocaina strait), and for centuries this has been one of the usual commercial routes for traders coming from practically everywhere. Due to its complicated orography, it took more than five years to construct and was inaugurated during 1905. Its six-metre neoclassical tower stands at 29 metres above sea level. With regard to Lobos Island, it represents one of the most attractive panoramic views that you can find of Fuerteventura itself: this lighthouse makes one of the key points on the island for this reason alone.

Long live eclecticism!
As the Canary Islands are located right in the centre of the usual commercial routes between Africa, Europe, and South America, this has allowed their culture to be made up of a kind of collage which mixes traditions from all over the world. This is the case for the church of Nuestra Señora de la Regla which is located in the centre of Pájara, in the south of the island: it is one of the few churches that you'll find which is established over two naves; in fact, it was built over a former construction, as the current building was built between the 16th and 17th centuries. This church shows characteristics which are common among the rest of island churches, as its whitish colours are combined with typically Majorero arches and domes. Its most prominent feature is the wooden portico that shows motifs and icons of the Aztec culture; in fact, it's supposed that the architect was a Mexican who was exiled in Fuerteventura. It's curious, isn't it?

You'll recognise it by its only nave, white colour, and its central location.
Really special
You will find this building in the town of Antigua, and in the centre of the Majorero island. In fact, this building was originally a small chapel which was the start of a subsequent one of which its foundations date back to the 15th century. An array of chapels and small churches were scattered throughout Fuerteventura during the first decades of the island's Castilian reign: churches were erected with the arrival of Christianity and with the objective that the new habitants could carry out their vows and prayers. The majority of the churches were later rebuilt or restored to cover the population which had already been converted, and obliged to participate in the cult. In Nuestra Señora de Antigua's case, this special church was restored during the 16th and 17th centuries, and even concerts are organised inside the building nowadays.

Located almost in the geographic center of the island, Agua de Bueyes is one of those towns in Fuerteventura made up of various elements that make it an authentic monument in itself: its desert orography makes it an unusual place, as it appears isolated and desolate on the road, a feature that only this type of nature could allow. Their houses, built arbitrarily, were raised around the Hermitage of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron saint of the place and epicenter of the town's activity. The past and present of the region is, evidently, agricultural; In its surroundings is the Tiscamanita Mill, one of the most important and historic on the island. To complete the landscape, a short distance away are the Caldera de Gairía and the Valles de Ortega, making up the toughest and most rugged part of the region.

The concept of a Majorero monument is very different, and this example is proof of this.
Volcano on the horizon
A word of advice: try to change your idea of a monument when you are in Fuerteventura. On this almost wild and solitary island, nature was responsible for making a series of monuments for itself that you must go and see. One of the best examples is located right in the heart of the island, in an area where the barren and volcanic orography makes it even more obvious. This volcanic cone situated at a few kilometres from Tiscamanita, between Antigua and Tuineje, dates back to the Middle Ages and presents a curious latent activity which has turned it into the focus of several scientific studies. A very special and unusual ecosystem has been generated around the Caldera de Gairía that has favoured a popular cultivation of tomatoes, among other things: this famous vegetable from Tiscamanita is one of the island's most treasured gastronomical products, and can be found anywhere else on its territory.

An ancient oratorio
When the Crown of Castile decided to take the islands of the archipelago, it came across different indigenous cultures that populated the islands since ancient times with traditions that were very different to what Europeans were used to. This provoked a decision by the conquerors to quickly build this oratorio when they arrived on Fuerteventura, so that they were able to develop their religious precepts, and establish Catholicism on the land. Shortly after, around 1410, the conqueror Jean de Bethencourt, who was one of the essential figures of his time, ordered the new temple to be built, and it was also Bethencourt who commissioned the construction of Casa de los Coroneles. The Church of Santa María Betancuria was built in a kind of Gothic style that reigned in Europe during the 15th century, but it was attacked by Berber pirates who reduced it to rubble during the 16th century which meant it had to be built again for the third time. We are talking about one of the most important churches of Fuerteventura.
Punta La Entallada Lighthouse
The lighthouse's crafted and original exterior architecture deserves a visit.
Pointing to Africa
On the outskirts of the village named Las Playitas, which belongs to the town of Tuineje, you'll find the Punta La Entallada or Punta Lantailla Lighthouse. It is positioned to look out towards Africa, and it's one of the island's most spectacular places, but it's not possible to visit the building's interior, unfortunately. Nevertheless, it's worth a visit to observe its curious horizontal shape in grey and red from the wooden corridor: the building's crafted architecture displays curious and originally red complex stone and masonry work throughout all of its arches. On the building's exterior, at the end of the walk, you'll find the most spectacular viewpoint on the island. It's incredible! This is the nearest point to the African continent at approximately 62 miles, and it's a completely wild and rural place that will keep you in touch with the typical nature of the area.

The bread basket of the Canary Islands
Do you know what Fuerteventura is known as within the archipelago? Attention: the bread basket of the Canary Islands. The fact is that its tradition in the cultivation and sale of cereals goes beyond the annals of history to even make up the backbone of its subsistence. This is why you always come across several windmills throughout the island that have been there for centuries. The island's milling tradition dates back to the 18th century and copied Castilian windmills, since the Crown of Castile was already there on the island for three centuries. However, Fuerteventura's special orography made it necessary to develop a new model of windmill, known as la molina (the windmill). This variation had already appeared in the middle of the 19th century and was characterised by having only one floor, which was a peculiarity that gave them a different appearance. There are three windmills that you must visit located in La Oliva, Tefia, and Antigua.

Time to defend!
Fuerteventura's geographic location and its special nature made the island, and the rest of the archipelago, a continuous target for pirates and nearby civilizations which were mainly African such as the Berbers, but it was also a target for the English and the French. As a result, the Crown of Castile decided to build this castle named El Cotillo, which was built over the ruins of another castle named Castillo de Rico Roque, and became one of the island's main defensive points; and of course the port named Puerto de El Cotillo which is named after the castle. This port is one of the island's economic resources and one of its key commercial points, since it mainly concentrated on the trade of cereals and cattle, and was often booty for pirates who used to attack this place. It's possible to visit the interior of the castle which still maintains its drawbridge and cannons, ready to defend itself. You'll love it!

An example of Canarian architecture
At the turn of the 15th century, the Crown of Castile arrived on the island: as part of the Crown's desire to expand and its plan to invade the Atlantic, various militia men were sent to Fuerteventura as a presence in the archipelago. The island was practically taken like this around 1404, but you have to bear in mind that there was only a population of around 600 people at that time. The colonels had the most authoritative posts back then, up to the point that they practically became the owners of the island, due to the purchase of land and estates. Casa de los Coroneles keeps this important historic chapter inside the curious architecture of a two-storey building built at the end of the 17th century, and located in the centre of the town of La Oliva. Declared as a Historical and Artistic Monument in 1979, it was the colonel's residency and one of the main exhibitions of Canarian architecture.

The whole Majorero coast is an ideal destination to practice surfing. But to the south of the island from Caleta de Fuste to the beaches from Barlovento and to the end of Parque Natural de Jandía, there are a countless number of hidden places where you can practice other sports in which the sea plays the leading role. The position and layout of the south of Fuerteventura allows it to be the objective of ideal winds for practicing windsurfing, kite surfing, and other board sports, but it also offers unique places to practice scuba diving and snorkelling. It's a suitable and special place to let yourself get carried away by the fun time you'll have here. The island's sea bed is a spectacular and unique ecosystem that turns it into an unforgettable experience for beginners and experts on the subject. Practically all beaches offer services for hiring equipment and courses with instructors.

This company is situated in the port of Caleta de Fuste and they provide an opportunity to get to know the Atlantic Ocean in a different way: their boats are prepared to plough through some miles offshore, and to catch the sight of cetaceans near the coast, as well as show the different flora and fauna that reigns the Majorero sea bed. For the most adventurous, they also organise swims with sea lions and other species, and you can naturally take the whole experience away with you in the form of photographs. And there's more: lovers of extreme water sports can also rent jet skies at this place, and organize water-skiing courses that are quite an experience, and a different way to discover the sea. We recommend that you check the times and availability before you go as their services are usually in high demand.
Malpaís Grande

The famous 'Malpaís' is a geomorphological ecosystem that was formed in the island's interior, specifically between the towns of Antigua and Tuineje. The peculiarity of the volcanoes which formed this area used to make their lava erupt over the sides in a thick and slow way, which created special sharp and rocky peaks like no others you've seen before, and not like the typical image that we have of volcanoes. This special orography has also made the flora and fauna to become unusual, and has given way to the creation of a unique environment. We're talking about a bar where you can have the first drink of the night (well, who said just the first one...) while you listen to live music, as this place specializes in American and country music, offering a really different atmosphere. The bar's famous acoustic concerts are already real legends in which many of the best artists from the archipelago, and others from different parts of the world have performed on its stage every night. Make the most of Fuerteventura's typical cocktails while you enjoy the performance of the day. Rock Island is situated in the north of the island, in the heart of Corralejo.

The importance of los coroneles on the island goes back to the Spanish Crown's invasion of Fuerteventura during the 15th century. As there was a need to keep Fuerteventura under command and defend it from possible invasions by other neighbouring civilizations or pirate attacks, the Castilian army had to stay on the land permanently. This is why the important military authorities built and bought large houses and estates, which formed a new wealthy class on the island. In this way, Casa de los Coroneles is one of the essential buildings on Fuerteventura. In the heart of the village, La Oliva, the ruta de los coroneles will show you another five buildings of the same period and it will take you back in time, giving you the chance to discover an essential period, in order for you to understand the island's history.

The Morro Velosa Mirador is a viewpoint which stands on Tegú Mountain at 669 metres high, and located in the middle of Valle de Santa Inés in the middle of the island in Parque Rural del Macizo of Betancuria. From this viewpoint, you can practically make out the whole island; or at least that's what César Manrique from Lanzarote must have thought, who was responsible for building this spectacular viewpoint, and the most famous architect in the whole Canarian archipelago. There's no doubt that this enclave offers the best views of Fuerteventura, making an ideal place to have such a beautiful view, and to point out what you have visited during your stay: from El Cotillo and the famous mountain of Tindaya, to the north as far as the area of Antigua and Tiscamanita, where the volcanoes formed the island more than 50,000 years ago; and if the sky is clear, you'll be able to make out Parque Natural de Jandía in the background. Exoticism here, there and everywhere
Fuerteventura Oasis Park has become one of the main tourist attractions on the island: the land's endemic nature, and the ecosystem that takes place here, in addition to the environment that this enormous park takes up, and the flora and fauna that live inside here are what make this park different and terrifically exotic. It's divided into three areas consisting of a zoo, a botanical garden, and a garden centre. What usually delights visitors are the animal shows of course that are organised here every day, such as the popular games with lemurs and parrots, or the shows with sea lions, birds of prey, and all kinds of reptiles. Naturally, this is a highly recommended place for the little ones and for spending the day with the family. The park also offers camel-backed guided safaris around the outskirts of this place which makes a different way of getting to know the interior of the island.

Land of surfing
Fuerteventura was considered as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2009, and it's likely that the 326 kilometres of its Atlantic coastline are very much to blame for this; and with good reason, that's for sure. What we do know for certain is that the island has always been a paradise for surfers who come from all over the world to practice their favourite sport, as well as the different variants that glorify it. There is a good reason why people have always said that the east coast is a perfect area for beginners. As for the island's north coast (by the outskirts of Corralejo), this area has the best right-hander waves in the whole of the Atlantic; so much so, that many sportspeople travel as far as here in search of the waves that break in front of Lobos Island, whereas the southside presents different beaches according to the changes of wind on which you can practice all kinds of board sports like kite surfing and windsurfing.

Despite Fuerteventura's well-deserved reputation as a destination for relaxation, the island also offers enjoyable nightlife that you must not miss. The good parties are spread out in various areas but the epicentre for nightlife is located in Corralejo, where it's main avenue starts to fill up with people when the sun starts to go down, surrounding the outskirts of the shopping centre named Centro Comercial Atlántico. Chácaras, drums, whistles, or bucios are just some of the names of typically Canarian musical instruments. Without going into too much detail, the majority are percussion instruments made of wood and skins from the island's flora and fauna. However, the island's traditional instrument par excellence is the timple: the origin of this kind of Majorero gets lost in the annals of history. Although the archipelago belonged to the Crown of Castile since its arrival during the 15th century, its geographic position has resulted in the islands forming a close relationship with the African continent, and gave way to cultural inter-breeding, which makes the archipelago culture even more richer. In the area of Corralejo, in the northernmost part of the island, a curious initiative emerged recently that turned into one of the main places for shopping in Fuerteventura, which is known as the shopping centre named Centro Comercial El Campanario. We're not talking about a typical shopping centre, as this place took advantage of the island's iconography and recreated a village in the purest Canarian style. Throughout the streets in this centre, which are open-air, invented avenues, you can walk round and check out all kinds of shops, for all styles and tastes. To make the most of the beautiful landscape, and the nice area where this centre was built, there is also a wide range of restaurants and leisure activities, and in addition to the modern clothing and accessory shops, you'll find markets and supermarkets where you can buy typical Canarian food products. During the evening, musical performances and dancing are usually organised here in this centre.

Curative vegetation
Thanks to the nature found on Fuerteventura, the products made from the aloe plant are first-class quality. The properties of the Majorero land and its favourable climate which mixes the humidity and the desert-like dryness, allow these types of vegetation to be watered in an important way on the island. This is why all the products related to health and body care have acquired great relevance: you can find multiple kinds of soaps, creams, and natural shampoos, and all of these goods are at good prices. Tax free shopping
All right, it's true that Fuerteventura isn't a paradise for shopping, but it does have some secrets that you must know about shopping on the island. The first of these secrets is the fact that the Majorero island, as well as the rest of the Canarian archipelago is exempt from Value Added Tax (VAT), which is stamped on products sold to the public in the rest of Spanish territory, and makes certain kinds of products cheaper on the island. In fact, it's common to buy tobacco, perfumes and alcohol to make the most of this tax-free advantage. Naturally, you also have to remember to check the maximum quantity permitted, as there is a thorough control of this at the airports, in order to avoid contraband. Whatever the case may be, you must know that the island's capital, Puerto del Rosario, and the area of Corralejo are the two large centres for shopping in Fuerteventura.

If you want a peaceful time…
The region of Pájara occupies the centre and the south of the island. You'll find this delightful enclave when you almost arrive at the nature reserve in Jandía called Parque Natural de Jandía. The Morro Jable Lighthouse stands as a marker with a northern limit marked by the Entallada Lighthouse, and the Punta Jandía Lighthouse to the south. Attention: in the middle of these is the gigantic beach of Sotavento, which is one of the enormous coasts that bathes in Atlantic waters. We suggest that you park the car and walk leisurely through these deserts, as this is an ideal way to discover the wonderful and remote, small sandy bays that are waiting to welcome you. Although it's true that Pájara is one of the most popular towns for the Germans who live here or come to spend their summer, it's also true that you'll easily lose your way among the cliffs, forests, and beaches as you find romantic spots where you'll fall in love again.

A walk round Calderón Hondo
Did you know that the dimensions of the island of Fuerteventura were half of what they are now? That's right. The surface that it used to have was almost doubled due to the continuous eruptions of some of the volcanoes that form the island, which resulted in it becoming closer to the land that occupies its neighbour Lanzarote. In the northern area from Corralejo, you can visit some of these volcanoes and Calderón Hondo is one of them: its gestation occurred around 55,000 years ago, and it has a crater of seventy metres deep. From the nearest village of Lajares, it's possible to start a route that will take you to the top of this peak, where you can practically go round the whole diameter of its crater and see the island's beauty from there. As you can imagine, the volcano itself and the panoramic views are incredible. People usually take a little food with them to feed the squirrels that live around here.
The Jandía Peninsula
An impressive natural paradise which is loaded with history and stories.
Two birds with one stone
This strip of land is one of the most prominent natural paradises that you'll be able to find in Fuerteventura. Completely separated from the rest of the Majorero territory, it is believed that it was an island itself thousands of years ago, and joined to Fuerteventura after some of the strong volcanic eruptions on the land. After passing miles of wild and desert-like land, the beaches of Barlovento and El Cofete appear in this nature reserve, as well as one the island's most curious stories: this is where Gustav Winter stayed in the famous casa del alemán (or German's house). Nobody knew this man's history exactly, hence the story, but it is known that he became the owner of the Jandía peninsula. It is also believed that he served Hitler during the Second World War, and that General Franco hid him on the island. Interesting, isn't it?
Tindaya: The Island's Talisman
You will be amazed by this mountain full of caves and prehistoric engravings.
As if by magic
The Montaña de Tindanya is a mountain located in the north of the island, and in the town of La Oliva. Standing at 400 metres above sea level, this mountain has become the most important natural feature on the island, but its importance doesn't stop there: Tindanya is a magic place in Fuerteventura which is considered as a sacred place by indigenous civilizations in which they left proof of their time in the area by means of their engravings. Due to this, the mountain nowadays has a large number of prehistoric drawings in its various caves, and this uniqueness has resulted in declaring this mountain as Bien de Interés Cultural (Heritage of Cultural Interest). This mountain is one of the Majoreros' best kept treasures. Incidentally, during the 90s, the great sculptor Eduardo Chilida put forward the idea of mounting a sculptural work on the mountain which was based on emptying part of it, but the village was against it, so his idea was not carried out in the end.

A new city with capital status
The Majorero capital is actually a new city, and barely two hundred years serve as a guarantee of its capital status. It was during the 17th century when this almost desert-like island was obliged to organise its market, since its exportations meant an essential part of its economy. For this reason, and following criteria of a strategic and geographic nature, it was decided that Puerto del Rosario would be the capital. Before this point in time, it was known by the name of Puerto Cabras. The charm of Puerto del Rosario lies precisely in its serenity: going along Avenida Marítima or Avenida de los Reyes de España, these modern walks will take you to a beach called Playa Blanca which makes up one of the capital's three golden sandy areas, together with Playa Chica and Puerto Lajas. Wait, there's still more: you still have to visit the open air Parque Escultórico (sculpture park), and the port which is named after the island.
El Cotillo
Another delightful place full of peaceful and desolate small bays.
The mellowest of paradises
At the northernmost point on the island, the little village of El Cotillo makes up one of the delightful spots of Fuerteventura: this is a sea village that has been taking care of its roots the same as ever next to the shore. Completely isolated from the urban hustle and bustle, the residents spend the day working on the coast and docking their boats on the beach which bathes in its waters; not much more is needed to understand that it was built as one of the most privileged places on Fuerteventura. Due to its peace and calmness, this natural wonder has one of the best beaches that you can find of course, with fine white sand and waters that show different shades of turquoise blue when the sea is calm. El Cotillo is also an ideal place to visit any of its restaurants to try traditional Majorero food. Costa Calma

Heading towards the south in the direction of Parque Nacional de Jandía, you'll find this place known as Costa Calma. Although nowadays it has become one of the island's busiest areas, it wasn't long ago since this land had been abandoned and left to nature; a characteristic that turned it into a totally wild and rural place, and it still keeps that spirit, as they knew how to keep its essence. The main attraction of Costa Calma is its coast which includes Playa Barca beach: this enormous sandy area covers the enclave from one end to the other, and offers an endless amount of secret spots and remote places away from the crowd, even during the peak season. The complex link with the rest of the island in comparison to other places on Fuerteventura makes it the ideal place if you're looking a beach where you can escape from the stress and isolate yourself in your thoughts for hours.

The east is a must-visit
Yes, we've arrived now: we're talking about one of Fuerteventura's most intriguing areas which is located on the east of the island. Situated a few kilometres from the capital, Puerto del Rosario, and thanks to its incredible beaches and spectacular views, Caleta de Fuste has become a tourist destination par excellence for any traveller who arrives on this land. As a matter of fact, everything revolves around its stunning coast; so much so that one of the most popular sandy areas formed around it is man-made. The sand had to be brought from elsewhere to be able to meet the need for all the people who came here during certain times. It's also known as Caleta or El Castillo, and it turns into one of the best hot spots for nightlife. You usually come across a multitude of tourists who have come from other European countries and are keen to enjoy the beauty of this place.

Touring the north
To the north of the island, you'll come across the area of Corralejo, which is perhaps Fuerteventura's main tourist area. The town centre is one of the most visited on the island and it has the most history where you'll find the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo at approximately five kilometres away. More than 2,600 hectares turn the reserve into an enormous place gifted with huge mountains of sand on one side, and beautiful views of the turquoise blue Atlantic Ocean that show the direction towards Lobos Island on the other side. It is essential to tour this route until you reach the island, in order to see its lighthouse and the Bocaina strait; in fact, if you are one of the most fearless people, we recommend you to cross over to the island and bathe on the shore, then go dine in the only restaurant on the island, which is on such a tiny piece of land. It's a must!
Betancuria
This town was founded in 1404 and was the first European settlement on the island.
Great cultural value
This town is named after the colonist, Juan de Bethencourt, who established it during 1404 upon his arrival on Fuerteventura. This nomination meant the first European settlement on the island and its conquest and capture by the Crown of Castile. This is why we recommend you to get to know the town's historic centre of great cultural interest, in order to discover and understand the origin of the island. It's no wonder then that its importance also lies in the fact that it used to be the capital for over more than five centuries, making it a real historical milestone that can still be seen on the town's streets. One of the reasons that turns this town into a real must-see during your visit is that it's home to the archaeological museum named Museo Arqueológico Betancuria, where the remains of what survived the Castilian invasion can be seen that were the origins of the Majorero civilization prior to the invasion. What is this worth? It's priceless.

Beyond the historic centre
Fuerteventura is characterised for being an island with small population centres scattered throughout the area, including its capital Puerto del Rosario, which can be toured completely on foot. It's also true that the place is one of the most obvious tourist destinations, which can complicate finding somewhere to eat, if you want to avoid something excessively touristic. This is why we recommend that you visit other areas such as Avenida Marítima or Avenida de los Reyes de España, after you have visited the historic centre. At these places, you'll find different bars and restaurants offering tasty and excellent traditional cuisine. For example, Bar Los Paragüitas in the market is an institution in the city, so don't leave here without trying their dish which is prepared with fish and chickpeas, as it's a purely Majorero dish. Meat, fish, and shellfish are offered here in a first-class atmosphere.

The last small island
Lobos Island is the last spot on the Majorero island. Facing the cliffs of Corralejo, on the north side of Fuerteventura, this small island is home to one of three lighthouses that illuminate the Bocaina strait. In fact, this lighthouse was the only building there was on the island, as its small area didn't allow many others. The same family of the lighthouse-keepers who used to run this place opened the only restaurant on the island in the area known as El Puertito. We're talking about a delightful oasis with transparent waters and rocks in which you can see the aquatic flora and fauna while you enjoy a peaceful swim. At El Puertito, you'll have the chance to taste delicious fish dishes which are always fresh, such as their traditional fried fish. This restaurant is also well known for their rice stews and paella that will make you lick your fingers upon finishing your meal. El Puertito is going to surprise you!
