Garment District

The meeting place for fashion.
This part of Downtown Los Angeles is ideal for shopping. Bordering Broadway, Wall Street, Seventh Street and Pico Boulevard, it is the epicentre of the Los Angeles textile industry, with an almost limitless choice of products. Its streets abound with haute couture establishments, as well as garment factories and shops where products sell for next to nothing. One of the busiest areas is Santee Alley (www.santeealley.com), which houses up to 150 premises dedicated to the sale of textiles. In addition, the Garment District has a large shopping centre which dates from 1927, the Cooper Building (www.cooperdesignspace.com), which also acts as one of the largest exhibition spaces of Los Angeles fashion. As if that weren’t enough, Wall Street, Seventh Street and Eighth Street house a famous flower market, which is a veritable explosion of aromas and colours.
Disneyland Souvenirs

Visiting Disneyland and not leaving laden with Mickey Mouse or Sleeping Beauty souvenirs is practically impossible. One of the parts of the complex with the largest number of shops per square metre is Main Street USA (www.disneyland.disney.go.com/disneyland/main-street-usa), which is often packed with curious bystanders at dusk, hours before the theme park closes. To avoid these last-minute queues, do your shopping earlier and collect it from Reception. The street is divided into different lands reminiscent of the worlds and characters made popular by Disney. The biggest shop is Emporium, a space full of fantasy, whilst Indiana Jones attire can be found in the shop in Adventureland and Indian craft items in Frontierland. You can also go home with lithography done by prestigious artists from the animation company by visiting the Disney Gallery in New Orleans Square.
Third Street Promenade

Inside Santa Monica is The Third Street Promenade, one of the most well-known commercial streets in the area between Wilshire Boulevard and Broadway. This street experienced a long period of decline until the decision was made several years ago to completely redesign it. Its three blocks have now become one of the busiest and liveliest places in Los Angeles, especially at weekends and in the summer. Both sides of the street are packed with cafeteria and restaurant terraces, as well as luxury shops. There is also space for second-hand clothes and record shops, where you can find authentic relics from years gone by. As night falls, The Third Street Promenade is populated by artists, jugglers and comedians arriving at music, dance and magic shows, as well as street vendors offering passers-by all kinds of products.

This street is located in the area known as the Golden Triangle, in the heart of the financial district of Beverly Hills. Rodeo Drive (www.rodeodrive-bh.com) takes its name from Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas, an old Spanish land grant, and there you can find some of the most luxurious shops and art galleries in the world. Along its wide, tree-lined pavements, there are multiple boutiques of Italian design, with fashion labels as exclusive as Gucci, Versace, Armani, Prada and Christian Dior. There are also prominent jewellers, as well as some of the most well-known businesses in Los Angeles. In fact, it is not unusual in this part of the city to bump into celebrities, including some of the most well-known faces in Hollywood films. Nearby is Two Rodeo Drive (www.2rodeo.com), an exclusive shopping centre modelled on European shopping districts.

One of the most popular open-air trading areas in the vicinity of Los Angeles is the Rose Bowl Flea Market (www.rgcshows.com/RoseBowl.aspx), in the area of Pasadena. It is a market with a very long history, which began almost half a century ago and where you can find practically all kinds of products. It opens in the morning on the second Sunday of every month and is made up of more than 2,500 traders, who set up their stalls in the car park of the Rose Bowl Stadium, located at 1001 Rose Bowl Drive. More than 20,000 shoppers pass by every month in search of food, but also works of art, craft items and antiques. On Olvera Street, in the heart of Pueblo de Los Angeles, there is another small open-air market every morning, which is especially recommended for those interested in buying typical Mexican craft items.
Glendale Galleria
A historic shopping centre in the city offering you several choices.

Located on the corner of Central Avenue and Colorado Street, in the heart of Downtown, this is the biggest shopping centre in Los Angeles, with an area exceeding 150,000 square metres. It was opened in 1976, becoming one of the first three-storey shopping centres in America. Its high point began in 1990, when it started making more than 300 million euros a year. Amongst other milestones, it welcomed the first branch of the restaurant chain Panda Express, as well as one of the first two Apple stores in the world (the other was in a shopping centre in Virginia). Inside there is space for more than 200 shops specialising in clothing, design and other products, as well as several department stores. Santa Monica Place

Santa Monica is home to one of the most luxury shopping centres in the United States, with an area of more than 50,000 square metres. It is called Santa Monica Place (www.santamonicaplace.com), a beautiful complex designed by the famous architect Frank O. Gehry that opened in 1981. Over time, the premises have been frequently refurbished, most recently in 2008, which closed it until well into 2010. Located at one end of Broadway Street, the building can be seen from several blocks away thanks to the enormous neon sign located at the top, which includes letters of a very distinctive design. The shopping centre has more than 120 shops, including brands as well-known as Tiffany, Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton and Emporio Armani. The ground floor has lots of restaurants, which are very busy at breakfast and lunch times thanks to their cheap prices.
From Melrose Avenue to Sunset Strip
Today it is one of the fashionable streets, with several shops and terraces full of beautiful people.

The West Hollywood area is one of the best in California for all kinds of shopping. Most activity is centred on Melrose Avenue, a large and popular street that begins on the border with Beverly Hills and ends on Lucille Avenue. The pavements on this street began to fill up with several clothes shops in the ‘80s. Today the area has a very modern feel, with hundreds of young people dressed in the latest fashions and colourful Harley-Davidson motorbikes parked on almost every corner. Another important trading area is the Sunset Strip, which refers to the more than three kilometres of Sunset Boulevard that passes through West Hollywood. Here you can find branches of the world’s major textile firms, in an atmosphere much more cool and glamorous than that of Melrose Avenue. Shops there are much more expensive.
Farmer’s Market
A market which arose out of necessity is today one of the most surprising that you can visit.
Food and arts and craft products.
Located at 6333 West Third Street, this is one of the biggest and most famous trading areas in Los Angeles. The market also has strong links to the farmers’ guild, from which it takes its name. Its origins go back to the Great Depression of 1934, when several farm workers set up a small market here to sell their products to the general public. Back then, the area was little more than a large deserted space, located practically on the outskirts of the city. In time the market grew, both in products and clients, until it became one of the preferred meeting points for Los Angeles residents. It currently houses more than 150 points of sale in between stalls selling fruit, vegetables and many other products from the ground, as well as shops selling clothes and imported goods. There are also souvenirs, gems and other unusual items, and even some of the best bars and restaurants in the city. Grand Central Market

Located on the ground floor of the historic Homer Laughlin Building, at 317 Broadway, the Grand Central Market is the biggest and oldest food market in the city of Los Angeles, since its origins date back to 1917. Built around what was once an open-air market, it is a large, totally covered commercial space. Inside, you can browse around 40 very colourful stalls, where you can buy fruit, vegetables, meat, fresh fish, poultry and spices. Some sellers also run small restaurants, where people often take the opportunity to try the products they’ve bought there and then, especially omelettes, tacos, sandwiches or various kinds of soup. Although there are many products of Californian origin, you can also buy food from other parts of the world. For that reason, residents of Latin American origin come here to buy typical products from their countries of birth. Petersen Automotive Museum
An overview of classic cars and their history brought together in this unusual museum.
The world of automobiles.
The film industry is one of the pillars sustaining the Los Angeles and, by extension, the American economy. But no less important is the automobile industry, also very deep-rooted in the culture of California. One of the best ways to learn about the close link between Los Angeles and automobiles is to visit the Petersen Automotive Museum, located at 6060 Wilshire Boulevard. Founded in 1994 by Robert E. Petersen, it includes a reconstruction of a city street from the first half of the 20th century. It is especially recommended for the nostalgic, since it is possible to see petrol stations from that time, billboards and all kinds of inventions associated with automobiles, as well as interesting models. There is also space for a '20s garage, a ‘30s motor show and a '50s drive-in restaurant. The top floor exhibits the first dragster cars, as well as race cars and cars that belonged to big stars from the world of cinema or have been used in some Hollywood films. Hollywood Museums

Would you like to have a drink at Cheers?
As well as taking a tour of the studios of major film producers, knowing the history of the biggest industry in the world, film-making, requires a visit to some of the main museums in this corner of California. The first is the Hollywood Entertainment Museum, located at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard. Its main attraction is the studio tour, which lets us enter the command posts of the starship ‘Enterprise’, from the famous ‘Star Trek’ Saga, and the popular bar ‘Cheers’, which gave its name to the well-known ‘80s television series. It also exhibits accessories, clothing and several objects that once belonged to stars from the big screen, as well as a detailed model of Hollywood in the ‘40s. Nearby, at 2100 North Highland Avenue, the Hollywood Studio Museum pays tribute to the first firm studio in the area. Its origins date back to 1913, when Cecil B. De Mille rented a farm to film ‘The Squaw Man’, his first film. Completing the trilogy is the Hollywood Wax Museum (www.hollywoodwaxmuseum.com), an unusual museum, located at 6767 Hollywood Boulevard, which exhibits wax figures of some of the most monstrous creatures in the history of film-making.
The Museum of Tolerance
If only other cities had museums like this.
Tolerance as a principle.
A multi-ethnic and multicultural city like Los Angeles needs a space like this, which promotes respect and understanding between peoples. The museum analyses the long path to the social harmony between different races and religions now present in American society. For that reason, 16 video screens show the fight led by Martin Luther King during the ‘60s for civil rights, while several recordings and interviews relive the 1992 Los Angeles race riots, which left 26 people dead and 3,000 homes destroyed. It also remembers the Jewish Holocaust with a recreation of the Wannsee Conference, in which Nazi leaders adopted the appalling Final Solution,which would end the lives of six million people. The museum, located at 9786 West Pico Boulevard, receives visitors in the Tolerancenter, a space with interactive exhibitions including a map showing the histories of the different racial groups in America. California African American Museum
A mix of cultures which gave rise to a country with its own civilisation.

This interesting museum is another of the most representative examples of the mix of cultures that has given rise to what is now the United States of America. Located at 600 State Drive, its core mission is precisely that: to highlight the important role played by African-American communities in the formation of current American society. Its permanent collections include a myriad of pieces brought to this part of the world by African slaves, as well as numerous works of art in continuous rotation. As for the temporary exhibitions, they emphasise the importance of some of the most famous Americans of African origin in fields such as politics, science, the arts, music and sport. In its corridors, you can see references to such famous names as Martin Luther King, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson and the current US president, Barack Obama. The museum also has a broad annual programme of conferences, plays, music concerts and other shows. LA County Museum of Art (Lacma)
There are few places where you can see examples of art from all over the world, so enjoy it!
World art in a museum.
Located at 5905 Wilshire Boulevard, this is one of the most famous museums in America and it has a long history. Until the Second World War, it was located in Exposition Park, forming part of a single complex alongside the Museum of History, Science and Art. It was after the war that it separated, setting up home at its current site between Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It is made up of six buildings located around a wide courtyard and was completely refurbished in 2004, thanks to the work of the architect Renzo Piano. Its interior houses more than 110,000 works of art from all periods and countries. In its permanent exhibitions, there is space for German expressionism, but also Japanese, Islamic, Indian, Nepalese, Tibetan and American styles, amongst many others. Also notable is its collection of more than 30,000 recordings and sketches, as well as the area devoted to modern and contemporary art, perhaps the most important in the museum. There you can see Russian avant-garde works, Parisian fauvism, New York expressionism and Mexican modernism. Japanese American National Museum

The first museum in America.
This was the first museum built in America, and also the largest, devoted exclusively to the history of Japanese immigration. Its first site in 1925 was located in the Buddhist temple Hongwanji, a spectacular building designed by the architect Edgar Cline, with clear American and Oriental influences. Decades later, in 1999, it opened the doors of its current site, located at 369 East First Street, in the heart of Little Tokyo. Inside it exhibits an impressive archive of moving images, alongside all kinds of utensils, clothing, art works, photographs and oral narratives of the life of the Japanese in this area of America. In total it uncovers more than 130 years of history, including the complex period corresponding to the Second World War, when being Japanese was frowned upon in the United States. Currently, the area of the building that was used as a confinement centre for suspected Japanese citizens during the war houses some of the museum’s offices and rooms. It is open from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm on Tuesday to Sunday, except Thursdays, when it is open from 11.00 am to 8.00 pm. See www.janm.org for more information.
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
All of mankind and its history is brought together here through strange figures.
Mankind at a glance.
This is one of the oldest museums in Los Angeles. Located at 900 Exposition Boulevard, in the area known as Exposition Park, it opened in 1913 and gives an overview of more than four million years of the history of planet Earth, as well as the evolution of the species that have populated it throughout this time. It is located in a Spanish colonial-style building, full of marble and stained glass. The entrance is presided over by two enormous Tyrannosaurus skeletons, which protect an inside loaded with treasure. Divided into three large thematic sections, the exhibition analyses life and earth sciences, anthropology and history. Amongst many other things, it is possible to view in all its immensity a reconstruction of a Mamenchisaurus skeleton, as well as a peculiar megamouth, considered the strangest shark in the world, and an exhibition of minerals and precious stones. There is also a section devoted to the life of Indian tribes from the American Southwest, with Navajo baskets and textiles. The smallest creatures are often found in the Discovery Zone or the insect zoo, where there are ants, tarantulas and many other species. See www.nhm.org for more information.
Chinese American Museum
A comprehensive overview of how the Chinese community was formed, with ancient artefacts and photographs.
The history of Chinatown.
Located at 425 North Los Angeles Street, in the heart of Chinatown, this museum is the only one in southern California that gives an overview of the long process which gave rise to the creation of the large Chinese community in Los Angeles. Located in the historic Garnier building, construction of the museum began in 1984, although it did not open until December 2003. It outlines a history that began more than 150 years ago, with the first documented settlement of Chinese immigrants in Los Angeles. Its artistic and historic riches have built up over the years through donations from numerous American citizens and businesses of Chinese origin. Amongst the most representative elements of its permanent collection are artefacts from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as letters, photographs and videos. There is also room for toys and wedding dresses, in addition to items that belonged to ancient Chinese herbalists. It also acts as a research centre and the top floor often hosts temporary exhibitions from various contemporary Chinese artists. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. J. Paul Getty Museum
An extensive collection of valuable antiques and paintings, brought together before your eyes.
The legacy of a millionaire.
J. Paul Getty was an American millionaire who at the age of 23 received from his father, an oil tycoon, a rich inheritance in the form of works of art, French furniture and antiques. This artistic wealth was for years exhibited at Getty’s Malibu ranch but, due to lack of space, he decided to build a museum modelled on a Roman villa, which opened its doors in 2006 and houses Greco-Roman and Etruscan antiques, as well as a research centre. The rest of the dead millionaire’s collections are exhibited in the J. Paul Getty Museum, a building from 1997 designed by the American architect Richard Meier, located in the Santa Monica Mountains. This bright complex, made up of five buildings and a large interior patio, has amongst its most notable collections items of French decorative art and European paintings. It also includes an array of miniatures from the medieval period, manuscripts, sketches and photographs. Some of its most famous works are ‘The Adoration of the Magi’, by Andrea Mantegna, or ‘Irises’ by Van Gough. You should also visit the gardens, inspired by the ancient Mediterranean. Museum of Contemporary Art (Moca)
It has one of the best collections of contemporary art, so if that's your thing, don't hesitate to visit.
The best of contemporary art.
Located in a red building designed by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and opened in 1986, at 250 South Grand Avenue, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles houses one of the most famous artistic collections in the country. Its paintings, sculptures and photographs, which cover the ‘40s to the present day, are some of the best examples of abstract expressionism, pop art, minimalism and post-minimalism. The artists represented here include Piet Mondrian, Roy Lichtenstein, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. The museum also has two other sites. The first, at 152 North Central Avenue, brings together some contributions to conceptualism, as well as several other works by Californian artists or those who have lived and worked in this area of America. For its part, the Moca Pacific Design Center, located at 8687 Melrose Avenue, stands out for its collection of photographs and some other quite remarkable contemporary works. The three Moca buildings are open from Monday to Friday from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm (with free entry on Thursdays) and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11.00 am to 6.00 pm. Griffith Park
There are not many parks where you can walk, go horse riding, visit celebrities' graves, play sports and much more besides.
A park for hundreds of activities.
With an area of more than 1,700 hectares, it is the biggest urban park in America. Its name pays tribute to the multimillionaire gold prospector Griffith Jenkins Griffith, who gave the city the land to create a place for leisure and recreation. Fulfilling his wishes, this area has become one of the most visited places for people to play sports or simply relax. Surrounded by golf courses and picnic areas, Griffith Park has more than 80 kilometres of track for hiking and another 70 for horse riding. It also offers a variety of leisure activities ranging from the Los Angeles Zoo through the Griffith Observatory & Planetarium to the Autry Museum of Western Heritage. From the Griffith Observatory & Planetarium, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Los Angeles skyline. Also very famous is the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, an enormous cemetery built in 1917, which houses the remains of Lucile Ball and Buster Keaton, amongst other famous symbols of American cinema. Next to the cemetery, the Travel Town Museum reviews the golden age of the railway, with 14 steam locomotives and several charging trolleys and freight cars.
Venice Beach
Good beaches for surfing, to see and be seen, and in brief, to spend an enjoyable evening.
The most alternative area.
Bohemians, students, hippies and, in general, all kinds of contemporaries congregate in this part of California. The city, located less than half an hour from Santa Monica, has a beach which is very popular amongst body-builders and has been portrayed in several films and television series. There is Muscle Beach, where in recent years several volleyball courts have sprung up. Another area more appropriate for swimming is South Bay, made up of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach. These beaches are often used by young people to practise all kinds of sporting activities, which range from swimming through surfing or skating to volleyball. In fact, it is said that it was here, in the first decade of the 20th century, that surfing became popular. On the Old Historic Pier, a statue pays tribute to ‘the man who walked on water’, in reference to the Hawaiian who appeared here with the first surfboard. The city also has several bridges crossing the canals, some of them from the 19th century, giving the place a certain Venetian look (in fact, that’s why it was called Venice). It is worth taking a look around Marina del Rey, to the south of the city, which houses more than 10,000 yachts and other boats.
The Historic District of Little Tokyo
This is clearly a multicultural city, and Little Tokyo is another example of this.
Tokyo also has its place.
Chinatown is not the only district of Los Angeles that has taken its name from one of the Asian communities that arrived in the city throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Another example is Little Tokyo, located between First Street, Fourth Street and Alameda Street, very close to Bunker Hill. Its origins date back to the end of the 19th century, when hundreds of immigrants of Japanese origin began to settle in this area of the centre of Los Angeles. However, it was in the ‘20s that the district reached the height of its prosperity, a situation which began to reverse with the outbreak of the Second World War. The US government subsequently began hunting Japanese citizens, resulting in many of them being confined in prison camps. Few Americans of Japanese origin remain in the area, but they do come often to visit the various restaurants and shops found here, especially in places as busy as Little Tokyo Plaza or the Japanese Village Plaza (www.japanesevillageplaza.net). One of the focal points of the latter is its large Japanese-style tower, complete with a tiled roof.
Malibu Boardwalk

Living in Malibu is a luxury within reach of only an elite few, as demonstrated in the 1959 film ‘Gidget’, starring Sandra Dee and James Darren. Fortunately, anyone can wander the streets of this exclusive enclave of the Californian coast, whose origins date back to the ‘20s, when a rich heiress had to sell part of her land to continue enjoying her extravagant lifestyle. It is one of the most peaceful areas of this part of America, which is why it is also home to people as famous as Barbara Streisand and many other celebrities. Amongst its main attractions is Zuma Beach, the biggest beach in the whole of Los Angeles County, always full of swimmers and surfers. Ashore, don’t miss the chance to take a walk along Malibu Road, a street parallel to the ocean which has one of the highest concentrations of artists and multimillionaires per square metre. The most well-known building that can be viewed here (for a fee) is Adamson House (www.adamsonhouse.org), located at 23200 Pacific Coast Highway.
Inside Sunset Boulevard

In the beginning, in the roaring ‘20s, Sunset Boulevard was a small dirt road that linked the flourishing Hollywood studios with the houses of the major stars in the world of cinema, located at the top of the hill. The coolest, and at the same time most historic, area is Sunset Strip, always lively and bustling. It stretches for just over two kilometres and was for years frequented by gamblers and smugglers, regulars at famous clubs such as Ciro’s or Mocambo (where Harry Cohen allegedly rechristened Margarita Cansino as Rita Hayworth). Located between Crescent Heights and Doheny Drive, this street still has the most nightclubs, shops, bars, cafés and hotels in Los Angeles. One of its most famous bars is Whisky A Go Go (www.whiskyagogo.com), where the legendary band The Doors made their debut several decades ago. You should also walk along Sunset Plaza, an ideal space to survey the enormous billboards that have long announced the latest releases from the main Hollywood producers.

The famous ‘90s series ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ showed the whole world the high standard of living in this exclusive American residential area. It is not unusual to see all kinds of sports cars on the streets, but the most spectacular feature is undoubtedly the mansions. The journey begins at the corner of Rodeo Drive and Dayton Way, one of the epicentres of fashion and glamour in the area. A legendary building in the world of cinema.
304 South Broadway is home to the oldest commercial building in the city, opened in 1893. It has not only been the scene of several Hollywood films, including the famous ‘Blade Runner’, but has also inspired a large number of television series and music videos. Although its exterior is not particularly striking, with a simple redbrick façade, its walls conceal one of the best examples of Victorian architecture in Los Angeles. It has a five-floor atrium, which is very light thanks to its enormous glass roof, and is replete with carefully decorated staircases, lifts and iron railings. Its design is shrouded in mystery. The commissioner of the building, millionaire Lewis Bradbury, initially entrusted the project to a famous architectural firm. However, the man ultimately responsible for carrying out the work was the practically unknown designer George H. Wyman, who had the plans transmitted to him from beyond the grave by his dead brother thanks to the techniques of spiritualism. The building was completely refurbished at the beginning of the ‘90s and the foyer can be accessed from Tuesday to Saturday during office hours.

Bordered by Olive Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street and Hill Street, Pershing Square (www.laparks.org/pershingsquare) was built in the centre of Los Angeles in 1866 and has the honour of being the oldest park in the city. Regularly used for concerts and all kinds of shows, it takes its name from one of the American heroes of the First World War, General John J. Pershing. Amongst its main attractions are beautiful boardwalks, with open-air sculptures and a famous lavender tower. Nearby is the no less well-known Millennium Baltimore Hotel (www.millenniumhotels.com/millenniumbaltimorelosangeles), a Spanish-Italian neo-Renaissance palace opened in 1923, which has housed several celebrities. These include the US presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and more recently Bill Clinton. The Chinese community is one of the biggest in Los Angeles. At first sight, it does not seem that big, though around 150 diners can gather in its main dining area. The décor inside is discrete, similar to any other restaurant of its type. What does make it stand out from the rest is the menu, which has over 400 different dishes, shellfish being a speciality of the house, together with lobster and fish head soups. A variety of aperitifs are available, as well as a great number of chicken, rice, pork, or squid dishes, seasoned with a great variety of sauces. Long Beach, less than 40 kilometres from Los Angeles, has two main attractions. The first of these is the Queen Mary Seaport, which takes its name from the luxurious trans-atlantic liner which has rested on these shores since 1975. The liner is vast, weighing in at more than 50,000 tons. It started sailing the seas way back in 1934. It remained functional for over three decades, offering exclusive cruises and transporting US troops when the country decided to intervene in the Second World War. Several guided tours are available to see the inside, with all its lights and shadows. It also holds 365 luxury bunkers which currently make up the Queen Mary Hotel (www.queenmary.com), and other rooms which saw European immigrants travel to the United States in the first half of the 20th century. The world's biggest amusement park can be found in Anaheim, less than 50 kilometres from the centre of Los Angeles. It is a must-see for anyone who is travelling with children. For those of you who are less adventurous there are other interesting options, such as the Space Mountain, a trip full of special-effects, or the Haunted Mansion. If Hollywood is the Mecca of cinema, the studios of its biggest producers are its most representative mosques. Fun tours are available for those who want to see them, where the secrets of their special effects are revealed. One that you should see is Paramount Studios (www.paramountstudios.com), found on 5555 Melrose Avenue. Inaugurated in 1914, they are Hollywood's oldest studios and also the only ones that remained in this part of the city. Bookings can be made over the phone to see them for two unforgettable hours. Another good option, though also one of the most expensive, is a visit to Universal Studios (www.universalstudioshollywood.com), found on 100 Universal City Plaza. Guided tours on a tram-type vehicle are offered every day of the week, up to 9 pm in summer, and 6 pm the rest of the week. Jaws and King Kong are two of its main attractions, as well as the opportunity to walk through their facilities. Greek Theatre

One of the best places to enjoy music in Los Angeles is the Greek Theatre, situated on 2700 North Vermont Avenue, in Griffith Park. Over the course of its history, internationally recognised artists such as The Who, Pearl Jam, Elton John, Paul simon, the Russian National Ballet, Alicia Keys, or Paul McCartney have made use of it. The building was designed by the architect Samuel Tilden Norton and inaugurated in 1929. Since 1983 it has undergone numerous reforms, varying the total number of locales, reaching 5,900 in the present day. It is a place where all types of concerts and shows commonly take place. It has also been the set for some films, such as 'Get Him to the Greek', directed by Nicholas Stoller in 2010. In addition, each year it serves as the graduation ceremony venue for the Thomas Starr King Middle School, and the John Marshall High School, and some others. Its stages have seen the main exponents of different musical styles, ranging from pop, reggae, or rock, to classical music. It is managed by the Nederlander Concerts company. Few tourists who come to Los Angeles resist the temptation to get their picture taken at the Hollywood Walk of Fame, walking in the steps of the stars of the big screen. On the tiles of this legendary street, right on Hollywood Boulevard, there are over 2,000 stars with the names of celebrities from the world of music, ballet, or cinema, including Spanish stars such as Julio Iglesias, Plácido Domingo, Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz, or Javier Bardem. The whole area oozes glamour, starting by the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, an exclusive establishment which hosted the first Oscar ceremonies. It was completely restored in 2005. Basketball fans will easily recognise this venue, which regularly hosts matches of the two local NBA teams: the acclaimed Los Angeles Lakers of Pau Gasol, and their neighbours Los Angeles Clippers. It is also the home ground for Los Angeles Sparks, the women's basketball team, and the ice hockey team, Los Angeles Kings. Situated on 865 South Figueroa Street, it is not uncommon to see famous faces in the stands. Anthony Hopkins is a regular. Inaugurated in 1999, it has the capacity to seat around 20,000 people, depending on the type of event that takes place. In addition to sporting events, the Staples Centre also hosts concerts. Bruce Springsteen was the first musician to give a concert there. Since then, many others have done the same, including Mariah Carey and Beyoncé. The building has also been the venue for the Grammy Prizes on several occasions, before it was remodelled in 2010. Found on 417 West Eight Street, its origin can be traced to the early part of the 20th century. Situated on 244 South San Pedro Street, in Little Tokyo, it is one of the United States' most important ethnic and cultural centres. Its vast installations include a central building, as well as the Aratani Japan America Theatre, a large plaza, and spectacular gardens. For decades, the first Japanese people to arrive in the United States dreamed of having a building like this one: a place to share their art and culture and pass it on to future generations. Its construction took place between 1978 and 1983 and was supported by Japanese and American investors, as well as several foundations and the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency. A highlight is the Doizaki Gallery, situated in the central building. It has many drawing and calligraphy works on display, as well as other Japanese art pieces. The Aratani/Japan America Theatre combines modern works with 'kabuki', the traditional Japanese dramaturgy style which originated in the 17th century. Walking through the streets under the shade of the trees we see an array of mansions, increasing the closer we get to Old Town Pasadena. In recent times this area has been completely remodelled, with building being occupied by commercial and restoration businesses. As well as stopping for a drink and doing some shopping, there are many cultural offerings in this area. On the inside of the historical Pasadena, the Norton Simon Museum (www.nortonsimon.org) is a highlight, boasting one of the best collections of old impressionist paintings in the United States. A few kilometres away, San Marino is home to The Huntington Library (www.huntington.org), a large mansion which currently houses a large library, as well as a collection of 19th century French and British art. Next door, the Botanical Gardens have up to 15 themed areas, including desert, Japanese, and Shakespeare themes.

Situated on 630 Fifth Street, this historic building of Los Angeles, designed by architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, displays an interesting mix of neo-byzantine, neo-egypcian, and neo-classical styles. On the inside, the Dean Cornwell frescoes are worth highlighting. They depict California's epic history in four stages. There is also space for the figures, the statues and candelabra, among many other elements. There are currently around 2.5 million documents in the shelves of this great library, including books, photographs, and maps. This makes it the third biggest in the United States, both in terms of size and number of volumes. It was restored and expanded between 1988 and 1993 by the architect Norman Pfeiffer, who gave it a modernist touch, as well as including a great, eight-floor atrium. Since 2001 its official name is Richard Riordan Central Library, in honour of one of the city's former mayors.

Many buildings in Los Angeles have become well known throughout the world after being seen in some of the most famous American films. That is not the case for this place, which sadly is known more recently as the venue for ex-football player O.J. Simpson's court case. He was accused and eventually acquitted of murdering his ex-wife and her lover, though some years later he was convicted by a different tribunal. Situated on 312 North Spring Street, in the heart of Downtown, it was designed by architects Gilbert Stanley Underwood and Louis A. Simon and inaugurated in 1940. It was designed in a modernist style, and has 17 floors which have seen famous actors walk down its corridors, such as Clark Gable and Charlie Chaplin, both facing paternity charges. It also had a prominent role during the 40s, when it saw the members of the Un-American Activities Committee gathered to investigate different Hollywood personalities' links with communism. The rectangular building sits on a huge steel structure and has many period pieces inside, as well as polychrome floors, plaster ceilings, and aluminium lamps.
Broadway Theatre District
You will still feel the glamour in the air as you visit theatres with some of the richest history.
A history of cinema.
From the end of the 19th century it has been one of the most iconic places in the centre of Los Angeles. A bustling shopping area during the day, the night brought with it Hollywood glamour, thanks to the many theatre and cinema venues. Currently, Broadway Theatre District continues to host a good number of cultural buildings, most of which were constructed between 1913 and 1931, and which display a unique mixture of architectural styles. Even though its days of greatest splendour are behind it, some of these buildings are very striking. A good example of this is the Orpheum Theatre, inaugurated in 1926. It is one of Broadway's most cinematic spaces and also one of the best kept, as it underwent significant remodelling from 1989. Its façade, designed by architect Gustave Albert Lansburgh, and tube organ, are both highlights. Close by, the Los Angeles Theatre was Charlie Chaplin's chosen venue for 'City Lights', in 1931, the year the building was inaugurated. Designed by Samuel Tilden Norton and Charles S. Lee, it has a unique baroque style inspired by the Fox Theatre in San Francisco.
Crystal Cathedral
An enormous crystal structure with a garden and a pool. You’d never think it was a cathedral.
A cathedral unlike any you've seen before.
Beyond Disneyland or Laguna Beach, one of Orange County's main attractions is its cathedral. Situated half an hour from the centre of Los Angeles, in Anaheim, its construction was the idea of Robert H. Schuller, one of America's best-known protestant pastors. The cathedral, which was finished in 1981, was designed by the architect Philip Johnson and has 16,000 tube organ and over 10,600 windows (hence the name). It is a very uncommon type of religious building, surrounded by a garden and pool, with a Gothic style chapel supported by Italian marble pillars. Schuller's congregation owned the building until 2012, when it had to be sold due to bankruptcy. His sermons used to gather over 10,000 people in a space which only had 3,000 seats. In fact, most of the congregation would have to follow proceedings from one of the annexes via television screens. The new owners of the building, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, have turned it into a Catholic place of worship whose official name is now Christ Church Cathedral. From this point you can see one of the most famous icons in the world of cinema: giant, 14 metre high letters commonly known as the Hollywood Sign. Over 4,000 light bulbs illuminate this legendary sign every night. It was originally publicity campaign by property developers who wanted to build a development called Hollywoodland. In the end they were not successful. In total, the sign is over 100 metres long. It was installed in 1923. Due to damage incurred over time as well as vandalism, it was restored in 1978 thanks to the 243,000 dollars raised by a group of artists and Hollywood's Department of Commerce. Just opposite from here is the Hollywood & Highland viewing point, situated atop a vast complex of new shopping and entertainment venues built on the same land which up until 1956 was occupied by the legendary Hollywood Hotel. Currently this place is characterised by the great papier mache Babylonic elephants, which have been made famous by being shown during the Oscars.
Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
Don’t be fooled by the modern architecture, this cathedral has a great deal of character.
Modern architecture with Spanish features.
It is another mark of Spanish presence in Los Angeles, and yet it is not a colonial building, but rather one dating from the start of the 21st century. Situated on Temple Street, between Grand Avenue and Hill Street, its author is the famous Navarrese architect Rafael Moneo. It opened its doors in 2002 as a replacement for the old Cathedral of Saint Vibiana which was damaged in the earthquake which shook the city in 1994. The new cathedral, which has no right angles and is made from alabaster, is erected over a large plaza and crowned with a grand lit-up cross. It covers a total area of 23,000 square meters and its height is equivalent to a 12-floor building. Its façade is very eye-catching, but so is its interior, which can accommodate over 3,000 people. It also has a conference centre. The surrounding gardens and fountains, as well as a 17th century Spanish altarpiece, are also worthy of note. A movie set.
Whether or not you intend to take the Subway or commuter train to get around Los Angeles, you should take a tour of this historic station. Located at 800 North Alameda Street, in front of the Pueblo de Los Angeles, it was inaugurated in 1939 from the original project of the architects John B. and Donald D. Parkinson, father and son, respectively. The building, in Spanish colonial style, has a good collection of Neo-Mudejar elements inside. In this sense, it is worth paying special attention to its marble floors and arched windows, as well as enjoying its coffered ceilings, located at a great height. Known for decades as the last of the great American train stations (although there are much larger ones), it has been the setting for films such as 'Union Station', directed in 1950 by Rudolph Maté, 'Blade Runner' (Ridley Scott, 1982), 'The Fabulous Baker Boys' (1989, Steven Kloves), 'Bugsy' (1992, Barry Levinson), 'Speed' (1994, Jan de Bont) or 'Pearl Harbor' (2001, Michael Bay). In addition, it receives daily more than 60,000 passengers and was registered in 1980 in the National Register of Historic Places of the United States.

A small church which is a must-see for those who want to understand how the city started.
Reminders of Spanish origins.
The Pueblo de Los Angeles, founded by Spanish colonisers in 1781, has a place in the centre of Los Angeles consisting of half a dozen streets where the oldest buildings in the city can be found. The best known of these is the Our Lady Queen of Angels Church, erected in what is known as the Plaza Vieja between 1818 and 1822. Going inside is like being transported to a Mexican temple. This sensation is enhanced when you hear the congregation speak; most of them are Spanish speakers (the church is one of the few places used for Catholic services). The Franciscan Friar Luis Gil y Taboada was the one who laid down the first stone of the building. The same building had to be remodelled in 1861, though the original materials were used to preserve its appearance. A century later, in 1962, the church was declared a historical and cultural monument of Los Angeles. Currently, a group of teachers who call themselves Las Angelitas (www.lasangelitas.org) offer free guided tours which last around 50 minutes, from Tuesday to Saturday. Caltrans District 7 Headquarters Building
A building of the future with impressive architecture. Well worth a visit.
Pritzker prize architecture.
If you like futuristic architecture, this building, found on 100 South Main Street, is a must for you. It is the headquarters for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. This may not mean much to you; however, it has experienced significant landmarks in its short history (it was inaugurated in September 2004). The building required an investment of 165 million dollars (approximately 150 million euros), and earned Thom Mayne the 2005 Pritzker prize, considered one of the most prestigious awards in the world of architecture. It has 13 floors over 700,000 square metres of offices and underground parking for 1,100 vehicles. Nicknamed the Motordom by its creator, it has a large open air vestibule, as well as restaurants, shops, and showrooms. One of the things most valued by the Pritzker panel was its sustainability; the building has many clear sections which illuminate the space using only natural light. It also features neon tubes and horizontal bars, which are reminiscent of the many motorways around the city.
The City Hall of Los Angeles
In addition to being the headquarters for the Daily Planet, it is landmark building in the city.
This is where Superman's love story began.
Fans of the Superman films will immediately recognise this building as the headquarters of the 'Daily Planet' newspaper where Clark Kent met his beloved Lois Lane and disguised his superhero identity with that of a shy reporter. The Los Angeles City Hall is free to visit and can be found on 200 North Spring Street, in the heart of Downtown LA. The top part of the building boasts a pyramid structure designed by architects John Austin, John Parkinson, and Albert C. Martin. It dates from 1928 and has 32 floors, giving it a total height of 138 metres. For decades, structures higher than 46 metres were forbidden in Los Angeles, except for purely artistic constructions. Therefore, up until 1964, this building was the tallest in the city, along with the Richfield Tower and the Eastern Columbia Building. As a result of damage suffered during the last great earthquake that shook Los Angeles in the 90s, the building was subjected to a series of structural reinforcements to make it more resistant to earth movements.
