The village on a rock
There are some Italian villages that are 50 metres above ground level One of them is Orvieto. That is why it is one of the most unique places in Italy. It is a hamlet of prehistoric origin on an enormous stone summit of a large butte of volcanic tuff. Also, the whole surrounding area is a huge green plain. This makes the view from the hamlet even more impressive. It is one of the most ancient settlements in all of Italy. No one knows the exact time of the first settlement, but it was definitely long before the time of the Roman Empire, in fact, it is thought that it may go back as far as the Bronze Age. All the old town is worth seeing but the cathedral is a must: from the XIV century, it is considered to be a great Italian Gothic masterpiece. Its wines and spirits also have a recognised reputation and you can try them in any of the bars and cafés scattered around the hamlet.

An oasis surrounded by Medieval Villages
The Bracciano Lake is a dream lake, a gift from a volcano. 32 kilometres from Roma, these marshes, were created by the volcanic movement of tectonic plates. But don't be afraid, it is an oasis of peace and quiet, an enormous pool of clean, crystal clear water, surrounded by beautiful medieval villages. From the waters, you can see Bracciano, as if it was watching over the lake, and Trevignano and Anguillara are behind. These villages were built in Roman times but along the streets you can see many medieval fortifications and buildings, which were widely used in the battles due to their position. Due to being at a high altitude, and well hidden, armies could see the enemy approaching. In fact Bracciano has a strange, spectacular Orsini-Odeschalchi Castle, which is believed the be from the X century, though it may be earlier. A curiosity for cinema lovers: the famous actors,Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were married there. All of these villages are full of gardens and pebbled streets and are surrounded by a vast forest, which surrounds the lake. It is one Rome's best kept secrets and, in summer, it is an oasis of peace and nature.

A small colourful fisherman's village on the coast of Rome
The Fisherman's Borough (that is the rough translation) is one of the magic areas in Italy, just a few kilometres from Rome, near Ostia. It appears on this great sandy coastline and is erected as a network of beautiful colourful, houses on one level. Fishermen erected these homes in XIX century, to be close to the sea and able to go fishing every morning. This little village has hardly changed at all. when walking around the few, but charming streets you feel as if time has stopped. In the centre, the church, San Nicola di Bari, the patron saint of fishermen, takes care of the neighbourhood You can walk to the beach, a few metres away and sit on the rocks, which defend the village from the big waves on stormy days. It has hardly changed over the years. In fact you can still see the boats that go to sea every day. There are endless walks awaiting you in the woods behind the village, where you can see the sunset.

This iconic harbour is a great place to hideaway on hot days in Rome. Despite being 35 kilometres away from the city, that you can reach it on the underground, it is not a particularly tourist area, as far as beaches are concerned. The beaches are not as spectacular as other parts of Italy, but there are several kilometres of beaches. This port, which was restored in XIX century, is a pleasant network of boats, walks, and the Mediterranean, along with memories of the splendour of the Empire which remain in its docks. During the time's of the emperors Julius and Claudius, the Empire went to where the sun went down and all the boats with their merchandise came into this port, which was another entrance to the city. The ships docked at the wharf and began the trade route, which ended at the Roman Forum. Ostia became a very crowded city, but now, when you walk around there, it feels as if it is a magic area that has been forgotten.

If you want to know where the President of the Republic lives
One of the pleasures of Rome is the walk to this Quirinale Sqsuare, the former bastion of the Ancient Roman Empire and the square where you can see today's residence, where all the Republican Presidents have lived. As usual, the great monuments crown the hills that overlook the city. Perhaps with the intention of looking out for any possible foreign invasions. Whatever the reason, Quirinale Square holds a large number of monuments. Among them: the sculpture of Castor and Pollux (ancestral brothers and keepers of the city) and the obelisk placed near them, brought from Augustus Mausoleum and Constantine's Thermal Baths, both from the Imperial era. In front is, the Quirinale Palace, an enormous construction from the end of the Middle Ages, erected as the Pope's Residence and which is the Government's Residence since the unification of Italy. Every day, at 15:00 hr there is a change of the guard, at the entrance. Although it is not as popular as others, it is a pleasure to listen to the band during the parade.

For sports lovers, football has always been a big attraction in Italy. Going to a football match may be a good idea. Rome has two top teams: AS Roma and Lazio football club. They are rivals but share the football ground, in Rome's Olympic Stadium, guaranteeing a match every weekend. Apart from European matches, friendly matches between clubs are usually organized during the week. So, it is not difficult to get a couple of tickets to enjoy a match. As a recommendation, be warned that tickets can be bought at the stadium itself, but tickets are not sold to the public on the day of the match, so you have to book them in advance or through Internet. The Noantri festival

Enjoy some traditional festivities during your trip
If your trip to Rome is near 16th July, the Noantri festival is held in the Trastevere neighbourhood. These festivities last for two weeks and are one of the city's most popular traditional celebrations. It is strange that, despite being a religious festival, in honour of the Virgin del Carmen, few people celebrate it in this sense, indeed, a lot of young people are unaware of its origin. The whole neighbourhood is full of lights accompanying a procession, which will exhibit the Virgin of the Church of Santa Agatha during a week. You can visit it in the Piazza Sonnino (Sonino Square). During the day, there is live music in all the streets and flea markets and many cultural and street activities. At night the "improvised" bars are full, until the wee small hours, with a mixture of all kinds of public. Young people who do not take part in the celebration of the Virgin del Carmen, pious Roman believers, curious tourists, and people who live in the neighbourhood.
San Lorenzo and the university students
Apart from having a long history behind it, this area is known as the university neighbourhood.
Why is it known as the Red Neighbourhood?
Built at the end of the XIX century, it housed foreign workers, who came to help erect Rome. The city had suffered a very serious crisis during the previous decade and now, it was growing very quickly. Throughout history, different historical events, like having been the only neighbourhood that opposed the fascist dictatorship, earned it the name of the red neighbourhood. Whether it is true or not, it is less of a tourist neighbourhood and very Roman. Inside you can see the Basilica of San Lorenzo Extramuros (St. Lawrence Outside the Walls), one of the five most important churches in Rome. From there on foot you can follow the walls marking the ancient city limits to the popular Porta Tiburtina. At night, the neighbourhood changes completely and is called the college district: the streets are inundated with students, who fill the bars and squares in the area, until the wee small hours.
Testaccio Area
It is a typical local neighbourhood and not much of a tourist area. You can spend a different kind of day here, or, if you prefer, a good night out.
Get to know the daily life of Roman people today
The Testaccio neighbourhood appears almost as a continuation of Trastevere, very close to the Porta Portese Bridge on the banks of the RiverTiber As the name indicates, it is at the bottom of mount Testaccio. The neighbourhood was founded as the point where merchandise arrived from the Roman Empire. The Port of Ostia was the entrance to the Empire and to the city of Rome too. And so, and simply for information, this mountain housed as many as 26 million broken amphorae, because the Romans stored them there, in the belief that they could be reused. All of these streets are a great way to get to know the Roman daily routine. On each corner you will meet the local people doing their shopping or buying a take away pizza, delivery men on Vespas, flea markets and lots of restaurants and terraces with home made (something highly recommendable) Italian food. There is also a long football tradition, as the historical Roman football pitch was there, where, despite the fact that matches are no longer played there, it is quite usual to find groups of fans and celebrations of the local team. At night it is one of the neighbourhoods with the liveliest night life in the whole city In fact, it has been able to retain a lot of its identity and there is very little tourism, so, if you want to know what local night life is like, you have a perfect opportunity in this neighbourhood.

The other area of Rome, which is well known for its night life
In Rome, there is another city centre, less monumental and more rustic but that equally represents the city. We are talking about the Campo dei Fiori (Field of Flowers). This square, which gives the neighbourhood its name, is between the great Avenue Vittorio Emanuele II and the River Tiber. This is where Roman everyday life goes on. And it has been that way for centuries. Before the construction, neighbours got together in this area to market their fruit and vegetables, cattle and artisan products from the area. That is why Pope Calixto III ordered the construction of a square as a market place in the old field of flowers, and that is where the name comes from. That was in 1456 and the market is still there today. Nowadays you can visit it every morning Monday to Friday. It is possibly the most authentic market in all of Rome. They say that, if you want to get to know the real Rome, you should go to this Campo dei Fiori. Since the Middle Ages, all of this neighbourhood became the affluent area of the city, so if you carry on walking around the streets, you will find elegant buildings that belonged to the aristocracy like the Palazzo Farnese (Farnese Palace) and the Palazzo Spada (Spada Palace).

In Rome the culture and tradition of street markets are widespread. There are a lot of different types of markets at different times, all over the city. That is why it is good to be able to choose. In these markets you can find big, bargains and above all, articles that are unique. The Sannio market is one of those places that is not overcrowded, where you can find a lot of bargains, while walking around the stalls. It is in the Via Sannio below the Aurelian walls. Although it is not in the centre of town, there are various buses available (118, 87, 16, 81, 13 y 15). This market has been working since the end of WW2. Although it started off as a clothes market, nowadays you can find all sorts of accessories, household goods, and there are even stalls that have nothing to do the fashion world, such as books and records. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and even though it is quite well known, you can walk around the stalls without crowds iand hassle. The sales people are usually friendly and patient, so you don't have to worry about clarifying any doubts.

On Sundays, starting early in the morning, a huge and diverse market invades the Trastevere neighborhood. This is the Porta Portese market: one of the most popular flea markets in Rome both for the years it has been around and for the size it has. More than 4,000 street stalls, street concerts, colorful decorations and a cheerful crowd make this market an unforgettable and purely Roman experience. Among its stalls you will find everything from antiques and vinyl record collections to clothing and footwear, as well as typical food from Rome and incense and candles. Here everything is possible. The variety of the stalls, the multiculturalism of the stalls and the lively atmosphere, with concerts and music on almost every street, make it the most popular market in the city. By the way, we recommend that you start touring it from Porta Portese, the newest gate in the city that gives the market its name. It will be easier for you to go down the narrow streets of this neighborhood. A single warning: take care of your belongings, although the atmosphere is very pleasant, you should not be distracted.

Curious street full of art
This curious and narrow street is known as the artists' and artisans' street. It is known as one of the shopping streets but it has an atmosphere of its own, and is different from the rest. The Via Appia is the beginning of the Roman Empire. It was the first road built with the intention of connecting Rome, the capital of the Empire, with other conquered cities. Which, in this case were Capua and Brindisi. It was an essential point for trade routes. This ancientRoman highway hides much more history than it seems. It was built in the IV century BC by the consul Appius Claudius (hence the origin of its name). With the arrival of Christianity as the Empire's official religion during Constantine's reign, new laws banned burials within the city. Thus, they began to erect a large number of mausoleums at the side of the road. All these funeral buildings have come down to us, and along with them, a large amount of Roman ruins and testimonies that can be visited in this park. Its vast territory (nearly 18 kilometres) and the lush vegetation surrounding it is what makes it the second largest green area in Europe with almost 40,000 hectares. For your information, every Sunday traffic is banned on one of the routes, which is reserved for the exclusive use of pedestrians, so we recommend that you go there for a walk on one of those days.

Archaeological remains on the outskirts of Rome
Ready to go back in time? Hadrian's Villa is in an area of over 120 hectares, on the outskirts of Tivoli. Within the area there are, hundreds of buildings and structures that were erected in the II century. Being so isolated and so well preserved, you can well imagine what this area looked like when it was constructed. It was the emperor Hadrian`s boredom that brought about the construction of the park. This emperor, weary of his enormous palace ordered this huge park be constructed and, the reconstruction of his favourite buildings within it, from Egyptian, Greek and other empires, which had drawn his attention. The purpose was simply to relax, wandering among the reproductions of the original buildings. It might not be the most practical construction in the empire but it has left us one of the most beautiful testimonies of the Empire. Strolling around the streets formed by the buildings, one building which draws one's attention is the Maritime Theatre, surrounded by an enormous beautiful pond, an ideal place to relax for a while, contemplating the group of Roman columns that defend it. Later, you can visit the Roman Canopus and the Temple of Serapis, based on ancient Alexandria constructions, a very influential city in Roman history.

Rome's Kilometre Zero
Piazza del Campidoglio or Piazza del Capitolio is the equivalent of kilometre zero in the city of Rome. From this point, all roads that connected the Empire began. Because of this point, the expression all roads lead to Rome was coined, as all Roman Roads ended in this square. The temple of Jupiter presided over this great oval. Here the Roman troops bowed before and after combats, to pay homage. It is said that the origin of the current square, comes from Pope Paul III Farnase, who, when he became Pope, said he felt ashamed of the aspect of the square and commissioned Michelangelo to restore it. That is how, the great painter began the work, in 1536, erecting the three buildings that still protect the square today. He orientated the square, with a great significance, towards the Vatican Basilica of Saint Peter, he erected the New Palace and restored the Conservative Palace, which are now used as the Capitoline Museums. In the middle of the square, the statue of Marcus Aurelius watches what is happening and reminds us about the history of Rome.
Appian Way (Via Appia)
An impressive route connected to Ancient Rome, and which is over 2,000 years old

The first motorway in the world is the Appian Way, and it is more than 2,000 years old. It was built in the 312 B.C. This paved road was decisive for the Roman Empire. You will have often heard the expression that all roads lead to Rome, well, these enormous Roman constructions made it possible. At a time when construction methods were totally primitive, the Roman Empire was able to erect a network of paved roads, the backbone being the Appian Way (Via Appia) that connected and united the vast Empire. It connected the city of Rome with Brindisi, where the port was situated, which connected them to Greece. Brindisi was a very important commercial route for the Empire. This road has a plethora of historical events, myths and legends it could tell about the city. It is said that St Peter and St Paul came this way to Rome, and the first Christians came to receive them. What is true, is that a large number of Roman tombs have been found by the roadsides because the city laws did not allow burials within the city. Now, the entire Ancient Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) park is one of the great Roman parks where you can walk.

The Villa Borghese is a quiet corner on the outskirts of Rome where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and relax. It is one of the largest green areas in Europe and, of course, the most appetising, in Rome. This enormous park is not like others, maybe it is not so famous and that is why there is so much peace and quiet. It is not a place filled with monuments, there is a special harmony between nature and the art that decorates it. It is presided by a palace. Actually, this building dates back to the XVII century and still reminds people of Cardinal Borghese, who was an important person for art in Rome during the XVI and XVII centuries. This cardinal took over all the adjacent land and created this enormous park. He was also patron to a large number of artists at that time. That is why, when the family went into decline in the XIX century, the Roman government established the Borghese Art Gallery there, with works of art by Titian, Bernini, etc. Inside this park there are other attractions to visit, like the Zoo of Rome or the Silvano Toti Globe Theatre, which is a curious reproduction of Shakespeare's Theatre.

It is the heart of the city
On one side is the gigantic monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, on the other, the Palace of Venice and in the middle, the continuous movement of passers by, tourists and workers. You are in the Piazza Venezia (Venice Square), one of the main points of activity and tourism in the city of Rome. As we said, this square is presided over by the huge controversial Monument of King Victor Emmanuel II who united Italy during his reign. This mammoth building gets the attention of tourists but is also the cause of controversy among Romans. Both its bombastic proportions and the exaggerated patriotic iconography and whiteness of the stone, which clashes with the other monuments in Rome, have caused a large number of the population to reject it. It is known as the typewriter and wedding cake. In contrast, the Palace of Venice stands on the other side of the huge staircase. The first Renaissance style palace in Rome. It was the Pope's residence during many years. But it is better known as Mussolini's residence, in fact, the dictator used one of the balconies for his long winded speeches. And this is something that has remained engraved on Italy's memory.

They say that if the Trevi Fountain is the most beautiful fountain in the world, the Piazza Navona is the most most beautiful square in Rome. This enormous ellipse occupies the place where the Circus Agonallis was in 86 AD, where a lot of sporting events took place. In the XVII century, Pope Innocent X gave orders to transform it, converting it into the current square. It was a project which was completed by two of the most famous architects of that period: Bernini and Borromini (who, strangely, did not get on well with one another). Inside there are important buildings, such as the Braschi Palace and Pamphill Palace as well as the Church of Santa Inés de Agone. But, nevertheless, the main attractions in this square are the three enormous fountains that divide the three sections of this pedestrian ellipse. Perhaps the most spectacular of all is the Fountain dei Quattro Fiumi, constructed by Bernini in 1651. Its four statues represent the four most important rivers in the world: the Nile, the Danube, the Rio de la Plata and the Ganges. Crowning the fountain there is an obelisk that is 16 metre tall, from the days of the Empire. The other two fountains are the Fontana del Moro and the Fontana Nettuno.

This hill rose, as if it wanted to watch over the city of Rome. In fact this is where the city originated. Mythology tells the tragic story of a she wolf that lived on the hill and suckled two small abandoned children called Romulus and Remus. When they grew older, the brothers founded the city at the foot of the hill that had seen them grow. In a fight for control of the city, Romulus killed Remus. Legend or not, history shows that by 700 BC there were settlements in that area. These settlements were the beginning of the city. The position of Palatine Hill was ideal, because it was near the River Tiber and people were able to grow food and keep livestock. And so, this is where the story of the eternal city begins. A lot of testimonies have come down to us over the ages about ancient Rome, and if you climb this mountain you can visit the Domus Flavia Palace, the house of Livia and the house of Augustus, the former Emperor's residence. After crossing the XVI century Farnese gardens, you can sit and contemplate the Roman Forum, lying at your feet, just like a postcard.

Come up to the fountain, and toss a coin, to guarantee you will come back again to Rome. Toss two, if you want a new romance. And toss three if, you want to marry your new love. That it what tradition says about throwing coins into the fountain. Whether it is true or not, what is true, is that thousands of visitors do it every day. The Fontana di Trevi was built in the XVIII century at the end of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct. It was one of the aqueducts that supplied water to Rome since the times of the Empire. You may find it difficult to find the fountain, and think that it is surprising that it was built in such an out of the way place. Around it the seats are perfect to sit and enjoy the view, although there is usually quite a demand. During the day, this is a very busy square, because it is one of the top sightseeing attractions of Rome, we suggest you wait until sunset. The square is much quieter, and you will be captivated by the illumination of the Fountain, it could be an ideal place to have dinner. There are a few restaurants in the area, they are not cheap, it's true, but it may just be the treat you deserve while in Rome.

The Trastevere is Rome's bohemian neighbourhood. Throughout history this part of the city has always been the alternative area, a different style. Just the name in itself tells us that things here are different. Trastevere comes from the expressionBeyond the Tiber, which meanson the other side of the Tiber. During the Late Empire this was where all non Christian cultures settled. Later, the Popes decided to erect three churches to show who was in charge in Rome. As a result, you can now see the Basilica of Santa Maria, the Porta San Pancrazio and the Church of San Pietro in Montorio, which is an emblematic place in Rome, because, according to Christian tradition, it is the place where St. Peter was crucified. This whole neighbourhood has a different atmosphere to Rome, there is a jumble of medieval houses on the Roman road, there is still a lot of vegetation growing because it is on the banks of the river. At night, it is one of the centres of Roman night life. Sitting dining on one of the terraces beside the River Tiber, is one of the pleasures of being in Rome.

And it stopped in the XIX century. It is the oldest café in Rome, and the second oldest in all of Italy. And here, at Nº 86 of Via Condotti, poets, writers and artists from Rome met. At these tables people like Goethe, Keats, Byron, Stendhal, Richard Wagner, and very many more, had very long conversations. Since then this café has stayed open and intact. Nowadays, it is still an important place for Rome's literary activity and it is a habitual place for presenting books, writers' press conferences and talks by critics and people close to the publishing world. It is quite normal to find public figures, from politicians to singers, having a coffee here. If you are fond of literature and art in general, you'll enjoy having a drink here. This typically Italian drink is one of the most refreshing drinks for sunny days and when you go for a walk. They say that its origin goes back to a small village on the outskirts of Naples called Sorrento, in the south of Italy. It is said that the lemons from there had a much more intense colour and taste than others and were also larger and so, they used those lemons and started to distil limoncello. It's impossible to know exactly where and when. What we do know is that it is a normal drink all over Italy. It is made with lemon, sugar and alcohol. But be careful! it can have up to 25 degrees of alcohol, so drinking it without taking care can get you into trouble. People normally drink it after meals, during the after dinner conversation, because it is a light drink that is good for the digestion. But, people also drink it at parties and at night, especially in the summer, when people spend more time outside with friends. There are lots of different ways of drinking it, even though it is always recommended to drink it very cold. It is also typical to serve it as if it was a refreshing drink, like horchata (tiger nut milk) or lemonade.

It is impossible to know the exact origin. But what is true, is that Italy and Rome have a long tradition in making ice cream and it is one of the delights of Italian cuisine. Therefore, only royalty and the upper classes could afford it. But they did, foment experiments by artisans to achieve some delicious desserts. In the Trastevere neighborhood it is always spring. This bunch of streets make up, without a doubt, the most charming neighborhood in Rome. It is not very big but it has a special charm and although its interior has a beautiful decoration, we recommend that you spend a little while before dinner and reserve a table on the terrace. If you sit there you will understand why.

Inside there is only one dining room, decorated with pictures that show different phases of the city and the restaurant. Nothing is missing from this corner of Rome. All you have to do is choose your menu or, accept their recommendations. You can try all kinds of pasta, pizza and typical Italian dishes. And, their desserts are famous throughout Rome too! If it's a pleasant day or night, you can have lunch or dinner on their terrace while contemplating the Colosseum. What we do recommend though, is that you call in to reserve a table a little while before arriving, as it is very popular.

It is as typical as it is old. But that doesn't mean it is no longer the centre of Italian gastronomy, and is also the most usual gift or souvenir, which travellers take home from Rome. In spite of only being a mixture of ground cereal with water and that you can find it in a lot of places around the world, Italian pasta kept a secret for themselves, which makes their pasta special. There are infinite types: colours, fresh, with shapes, with fillings, and a long etcetera. Here it depends on each person's taste. However, here are some recommendations. If you would like to try the pasta in a restaurant, we recommend you get away from the centre, not much, just enough to get closer to the Trastevere district or, better still, Testaccio. In these areas, there is a large number of Trattorias or typical Italian restaurants much more affordable and, above all, with better quality in their kitchens. In the centre the very fact that they are so crowded, sometimes causes the food to not be quite as good as expected. If you want to buy pasta as a souvenir, we recommend any of the home made products on the stands in the centre of town.. You'll find lots of variety.

The eternal city has so much history in its streets, that it is one of the cities with the greatest number of monuments and museums in the world. There are a lot of almost obligatory visits. But if you are in the city for sufficient time, or you fancy a more alternative route, we can tell you about some curious places. First of all, we recommend you visit the Casa di John Keats - Mary Shelley, (the house of John Keats - Mary Shelly, next to Piazza di Spagna. This place has become a venerable place for literature. As well as the story of the English writer who settled in Rome, you can enjoy the experience of romanticism through its heritage. Among other things, there is one of Oscar Wilde's manuscripts on display. Another interesting place is the Museo Nazionale delle Paste Alimentari (National Pasta Museum), in Piazza Skanderbeg a few metres from the Trevi Fountain. It will show you a different way to understand the history of Rome through its gastronomy. Finally, for lovers of the paranormal, on the banks of the Tiber, next to the Ponte Cavour, you can visit the Museo delle Anime Dei Defunti (Museum of Departed Souls). This museum is dedicated to the souls waiting in purgatory and to their earthly manifestations on earth. Quite an experience!

In the Via del Corso Nº 18, very near the Piazza del Popolo Goethe's home, one of the most important figures in XVIII-XIX century literature, the creator of romanticism and author of Faust. In 1786 the poet moved to Rome, where he founded a meeting place in his home, for writers and artists of that era. Goethe was a very politically active person, and, due to that, left a great mark on the city. Also. he always expressed his love for the city of Roma, to which he left his residence in his will after his death. Thus, the capital of Italy took over, and founded the Casa Di Goethe (The House of Goethe) , with a permanent exhibition about the writer's life and work. It is one of the most important romance art centres in the world because, among other things, the author left a great number of documents, drawings and manuscripts, as well as a complete library with everything that influenced him Now this centre also organizes other temporary exhibitions of artists either related to the author or the movement. It is one of the most important places in the world for romance art, and it is one of the least known in Rome.

One of the charms of the eternal city is having art in the street. Rome is a city where both the Empire and the Renaissance periods have converted the city centre into a museum in itself. Baroque and romance have also left their mark. But that does not mean that Rome does not look ahead with regards to artistic currents. The MACRO is one of the most innovative XX century places with a global reputation. Visiting the inside and outside of the MACRO are equally important. That is to say, the building itself (a restoration of an old industrial building where Peroni beer was made) is a very innovative architectural work, and that alone has made it a city attraction. Inside, six enormous rooms exhibit collections of art from the 60s, pop-art and a wide variety of works of art from the XX century, as well as new trends. One of its main attractions is a permanent exhibition of the work by a Group called Formula 1, which consists of Perilli, Accardi and Dorazio. Just taking a walk around it is worthwhile.

The Roman Forum has been conserved since the time of the Empire until today, as if it were a snapshot of a day in their daily life. This group of temples, streets and walls maintain the daily life of Rome during the Republic. Here traders, local residents, State politics and prostitutes mingled day after day. In the background the Palatine Hill overlooked the daytime activities. This forum was founded around 500 BC as a meeting point for bartering and exchanging goods. Centuries later, due to changes in the Empire, there was a need to install the city administration somewhere, so several buildings from this forum were used for that purpose. The Temple of Concord is still standing today, where the Senate set up its quarters. The temple of Castor and Pollux, the Basilica Julia and Tabulario also kept the secrets from the great days of the Empire. Actually, the Roman Forum was the most extensive area of the city, as it refers to the city centre, to the area where the city activity took place. The passage of time has meant that a large part of it is buried between the new buildings, but you can still see the ruins and imagine what the great Roman Empire was like..

Have you ever heard of the Roman thermal baths? The Terme di Caracalla remain standing as if they would like to show you the luxuries of the Roman civilization. Inside, behind almost 30 metre high walls, is the most complex architectural network in the city. Although it may sound like a cliché, it is amazing how these hot water systems started working in 216 AD. They were built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. There were several more thermal circuits, spread around the city, as there was a big demand for them. In fact, they were free to use. Inside, in addition to different bathing areas with different temperatures, it was decorated with the intention of helping those who used the baths to relax. The neighbours came to these thermal baths to meet and talk to their fellow citizens, and so, they were also able to use large leisure areas. Although you can no longer see the original decoration, you will be able to see all the nooks and crannies on the way to the calidarium (hot) pool and later sit in the doorway, as the ancient Romans did, and watch the sun set over the city of Rome.
Trajan's Market

It may have been the first shopping centre in history
This ancient market is the first example of a shopping centre in the entire history of civilizations. Rome had a huge trading activity because of the port being so near the city. That is why, between the years 100 and 110 AD, the emperor Trajan commissioned Apollodorus of Damascus, one of the most famous architects of the time, to take charge of the construction of this huge covered market. He erected six floors that housed 150 business on the 2,000 metre surface that was and is in the middle of Via Nazionale, a few metres away from from the Piazza Venezia. It became the city's trading centre in a city which, in those times, had a population of one million inhabitants. Inexplicably, Trajan's market has not been as popular as other Roman monuments, such as the Colosseum, and so the building has fallen into oblivion. Before being declared in ruins, there was a careful restoration performed, and now it can be visited again. It is surprising that the building has remained virtually intact despite the passage of time. From the central courtyard, each of the arches can be seen, where light passed through, into the ancient shops, the same as each of the marble terminations on the walls.

See the most concealed part of Rome
These kilometres of tunnels have harboured a multitude of legends and tales. What is no less disturbing is the real origins of these burial places. Their origin goes back to the V century in Rome. After the edict of Milan in 313 AD the persecutions against Christians stopped. Christians opposed the pagan incineration ritual and preferred to bury their dead. However, burials within the city of Rome were not allowed. Because of that, they began this enormous work in the quarries on the outskirts of the city. Hence the name which means "near the quarry" . There are a lot of catacombs in the city and their networks are so intricate that they are connected to one another.. The most recommended are: the Catacombs of San Sebastian (in the Via Appia Antica, no 136), the Catacombs of San Callisto (at no 126 in the same street), the Catacombs of Priscilla (in Via Salaria, no 430) and the Catacombs of Domitilla (Via delle Sette Chiese, no 280). Although history may seem rather gruesome, you can see the niches of the early Christians as well as the Catacombs themselves, which is an incredible sight.. It is a journey through the intestines of the city of Rome.

Rome plays with an advantage. This ancient capital of Rome has so often seen new artistic currents appear, and has accumulated so many artistic testimonies from so many different currents and times, that it is on a different level to others It is said there is no need to go to a museum in Rome, because the city itself is already an exhibition, not only from the Roman and Renaissance eras but also from Medieval, Baroque, Romantic periods and XIX century currents. They all left the city full of buildings, squares, monuments and other constructions that make Rome a museum of humanity. However, the city also wanted to open its own galleries and the Capitoline Museums, in the Piazza del Campidoglio are two buildings with a unique collection. This creation of the two museums began when Pope Sixtus XIV donated a collection of bronze statues in 1491, creating one of the oldest museums in the world. There will not be sufficient time to see all the works of art but you must visit the work by Titian, Caravaggio, Rubens, Tintoretto as well as the sculpture of the Capitoline wolf, mother of Romulus and Remus and founder of the city .

Admire the beauty of the frescoes
Little can be said about one of the most important places in the world. It is said that everyone, at least once in their lifetime, should visit this chapel. It is located on the right of the Vatican Basilica of Saint Peter. And the most important secret conclaves in the world were held here. Inside the cardinals meet to decide who will be the next Pope, while millions of people wait expectantly to see the black or white smoke billowing from the chimney. But, what thousands of visitors want to see every day, are the frescoes by Michelangelo Buonarroti, looking down from the chapel ceiling, watching everything going on below. These frescoes unite Christians, Muslims, Jews or simply lovers of art. It was commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV, and Michelangelo did the paintings between 1508 and 1512. Other painters, like Botticelli, Perugino and Luca also participated. In the centre of the frescoes, the author drew nine scenes, nine passages from Genesis. But did you know that the painter left a secret message of universal love, contrary to Church principles, hidden in his work of art?
The Circus Maximus

The Circus Maximus will make you feel really small and insignificant. It is hard to believe that in 600 BC the Roman Empire constructed this enormous stadium, that was 600 metres long and 250 metres wide. Of course at first, they used the valley between the mountains of Palatine and Aventine, so that spectators could sit on the hillside slopes. However, around the I century A.D. with the popular emperor Julius Caesar, there was seating for 300,000 spectators; which is triple the capacity of Santiago Bernabeu Stadium where Real Madrid play! Now you can go into the circus, walk between the seats and recreate the famous chariot races. There have been a lot of films, which have tried to re-create these races, the best known is the scene that was filmed in the Circus Maximus from Ben Hur. This enormous ellipse was also used for the presentation and coronation of new emperors, which were attended by the whole city. As time went by people lost interest and it finally became a quarry. However, it is still one of the most amazing places from the Roman legacy.

The controversial Arch of Titus
This tribute to the Roman emperor is shameful for the Jews. In fact it is known that the Jewish community, who live in or visit the Italian capital avoid it. We will explain why. In 67 AD, Titus, the future emperor, led a movement against the Jews, which resulted in the First Roman Jewish War and led to the burning of Jerusalem. Several years after the end of the conflict, the Empire named him Emperor, in 79 AD, partly because of this kind of victory. Following his death, only two years after Titus became Emperor, in the year 81 AD, this monument was built in his honour. There is a legend about this construction that any Jew who walks under the arch will cease to be a Jew and will no longer be recognized as such. Apart from the legends, that is the reason why, despite time passing by, the Jewish community still feels ashamed of this arch. Leaving aside the conflicts, the Arch of Titus is located on the Via Sacra. With these constructions the Empire showed its people the strength and power of their country and its army.

The Arch of Constantine is situated between the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. As you can see, you can hardly move in Rome without coming across monuments from the time of the Roman Empire. We have been very fortunate that their architecture was so advanced, and a large part of their work has withstood time. It is the most modern triumphal arch erected in Rome. It was constructed in 315 AD to commemorate the victory of the Great Constantine I, in the Milvian River battle. Despite being one of the largest (it is 21 metres high and 25 long and has three arches), it is the best example of Roman construction. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore stands at the top of Esquilino Hill, the highest of the seven hills of Rome. Legend has it that its location was a whim of the Virgin herself. When the Pope woke, he opened the curtains and saw Esquilino Hill completely covered in snow. Liberius considered this to be the sign. At the top of this hill the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, nicknamed the Basilica Santa Maria della Neve (St. Mary of the Snow). was built. It was converted into one of the four papal basilicas when the Avignon treaty was finalised. This means that it is one of the places where the Pope moves his residence, according to the time of year, In fact, on 5th August each year, the day known as the Day of the Snow is commemorated. The Pope gives a multitudinous mass for the faithful from the basilica balconies.

In fact, both emperors and popes have used this building as a residence during times of conflict. We would also like to share a secret with you; few people know that the castle is connected to the Vatican by a fortified underground corridor, which allows the Pope to move, in the event of a serious threat.. Perhaps, because of these mysterious stories, this castle is one of the Roman buildings, which has most often appeared in novels and films.
St. Paul Outside the Walls

You can visit the Martyr's tomb and walk around the beautiful, extensive park that surrounds it. You are on the outskirts of Rome and can see the ancient Roman ruins from there. The Colosseum ruins are the perfect place to sit and imagine what life was like in the Roman Empire. You can still see the rows of seats where the Romans sat and enjoyed themselves watching chariot races or violent battles between gladiators and lions. You can imagine the violent bloody fights,. people were used to, between convicts and wild animals. They even shouted and cheered at opponents, between laughter and applause, creating that typical expression of fat and happy (distraction). This Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheatre was inaugurated by the Emperor Titus in the year 80 A.D. It stood on the ruins left by one of the most devastating fires that the capital of the Empire had ever experienced and the reason for the construction was to prove that great Rome had risen from its ashes. Now you can stroll around its walls and contemplate more than 180 meters, which separate the seating of this enormous elliptical construction. All the arches are carefully adorned with Ionic, Doric and Corinthian decoration, which took almost a century to complete. This building not only gave the people shows and violence, but created a sense of patriotism, with a flag and homeland, to belong to: the Roman Empire.

When evening falls, St Peter's Square is the perfect place to rest after your visit and contemplate what we humans are capable of erecting.
