A fairy-tale town
As if it were making way between the forests, the town of Rapperswil-Jona appears on the mountain by the banks of Lake Zurich, and at a few kilometres from the city, which is well linked by bus and tram: this town used to be two villages years ago separated by the Swiss canton but they decided to join due to their small size. Now, they make a perfect photograph of what Swiss civilization used to be, as an enclave around a castle that stands out on the highest point of the mountain. History tells us that this was how the villages used to defend themselves upon the arrival of invading armies. Did you know that the Chinese city of Kunming is twinned with Zurich? As you go round Zurich, you'll see that industrial architecture was particularly important in the development of the city centre during the first decades of the 20th century. Now into the new millennium, the city has proposed to restore certain parts in order to achieve more green areas in the city, and one of their greatest successes has been this MFO Park, which is located in the district of Neu-Oerlikon, combining different architectural structures with enormous green areas. This place even has an area where they harvest grapevines and other fruit trees. Access to the MFO involves climbing some interesting stairs from where you can see the whole framework of this unique metallic structure that stands as an emblem of perfect industrial restoration. In fact, this place earned the title of being a vertical park. Do you want to know why? Well, move a little away from the park and take a look at it from some metres away as night falls. It will surprise you!

If you have little time to visit the city or you simply don't want to spend a lot of money to eat (yes, okay, prices can sometimes be a bit high), there are several options to try typical and traditional cuisine in another way. In the first place, and thinking of those who don't have time to lose, there are the street stalls: throughout the city you will find takeaway food, where you can try the bratwurst, a kind of very tasty hot dog, the bretzeln, salty and spongy buns in the shape of a braid, or the well-known mandelfisch, sweets made from almonds and with a popular fish shape. Another of the most fashionable options in Zurich is to buy takeaway food at Coop establishments, where they offer ready-made homemade food, with a wide range to choose from; There are numerous stores scattered throughout the city.

In the Canton of Valais, a cheese is produced which is different and characterized for two reasons: it's made from unpasteurised milk, and has a peculiar shape of wheel. Raclette is an enormous circle of cheese that can weigh more than six kilos, and is often consumed by letting it melt next to a heat source, allowing this cheese to be eaten in a warm and melted way. The Canton of Valais was where raclettes became popular. It's a type of grill that is similar to fondue and it's very common to order it in bars and restaurants and for sharing among several people. Raclette is also usually accompanied with cold meats, gherkins, and boiled potatoes, making a dish which is more than filling. The tradition began in the region of Valais but it soon became popular and spread throughout the rest of the country to be one of Switzerland's most typical dishes nowadays. Accompany yours with one of the local white wines.

A large variety of food
Right next to the rear facade of the Grossmünster church, and following the trail of the banks of the Limmat River, you'll find a street named Niederdorf that takes you down to explore Zurich's historic centre. This is one of the city's busiest avenues since it's the main artery for shops and shopping during the day, but then it's packed with people during the evening, and at night, as they fill the terraces (in summer) and the bars and restaurants in the area, which makes it the main place for nightlife. From midday, this place is a swarm of people who come to have breakfast, a snack, lunch, or dinner in some of the many cafes and restaurants that make up the most intriguing area for socialising during a business lunch, or a casual dinner. If you're thinking of treating yourself and going somewhere special for lunch or dinner, this is our personal recommendation: the Lindenhofkeller restaurant isn't only one of the most famous in the city of Zurich, it's also quite a legend in the whole region. This restaurant has been open since 1860, and it has two qualities that make it extremely special: on the one hand, you have its impressive cuisine which is considered as one of the best in the world, according to critics and most of the public. If you're looking for something typical, their specialty is roasted beef loin, but their stews are also very famous. On the other hand, it's because the restaurant has one of the best wine cellars in the city where they store more than six hundred examples of first class wines. Wine experts and lovers of good wines have a sanctuary here to spoil their palates. The Lindenhofkeller restaurant is certainly a special and unique place.

The time has come to make a toast
Despite Switzerland's small area, the country has large and important wine harvests, and some of them have so much quality that they even compete with the French and Spanish wines. But Zurich isn't left behind, as good wines are also produced in the suburbs, despite the hard conditions of the land, and the unfavourable weather. If you would like to try the local varieties, we recommend that you visit the streets named Oberdorfstrasse or Niederdorfstrasse in the evening, and do a tour of their lovely bars and restaurants if the weather is good. Swiss cuisine also has a long-standing tradition when it comes to producing meats, which is especially due to the German influence, but the Swiss themselves date back to Pre-Roman times, explaining how the first settlements and civilizations on the land already hunted and prepared foods in a certain way. Whatever the case may be, there are some dishes that you must try: on the one hand, you've got grilled meats with kraut and potatoes, making a tasty combination; and on the other hand, the Züri Gschnätzlets is one of the most popular recipes based on stewed meat, local spices, cream, and white wine. You'll naturally find all kinds of sausages too. Throughout the central street of Niederdorf, by the bank of the Limmat River, you'll find several restaurants and terraces where you can try these type of dishes, and at prices to suit everyone.

If you've never tried the famous rösti, you'll never find a better opportunity than this. It's possible that this purely Swiss and popular dish originated among the families of farmers on the mountains: these crofters prepared the recipe every day by using the most common product they had at home, which was the potato. Rösti is a mix of potatoes cut into slices and then are fried or cooked with animal fats and all kinds of ingredients, to finally make a type of omelette. There are many variations from onion to bacon, various cheeses, and spices from each area. Rösti has been traditionally considered as Switzerland's national dish. Now you can find it in any establishment and as a take-away dish. People say that rösti originally made up part of breakfast, and there are people who still consume it this way, so we suggest that you try it in one of the cafes in the city centre.

Perhaps the most popular cheese in the area of Zurich is the famous 'Emmental' with its popular holes, but there are also hard, soft, and alpine cheeses, as well as ones for making fondue of course, which is one of the nation's specialties. In fact, it's estimated that there are almost five hundred different and recognized varieties. If you would like to buy a souvenir of this kind of product, the usual ones are 'Gruyère', 'Sbrinz', and 'Emmental' which is the cheese we mentioned earlier. The great sugary pleasure
The story has it that the famous Swiss chocolate tradition began right here in Zurich: it's said that it was here in 1697 when the city mayor, Heinrich Escher, came across chocolate on a visit to Brussels and introduced it to the country, but it was exclusively reserved for the wealthier classes during that period. Incidentally, chocolate was rejected by Swiss society until around the beginning of the 19th century when it was attributed to possessing aphrodisiac properties. Although the origin of this food substance was found elsewhere, it was the Swiss production that gave chocolate its worldwide prestige. The first step occurred in 1850 when Charles Amédée Kohler produced the first chocolate varieties, and then of course when Rudolph Lindt produced his first chocolate in 1879, just like we enjoy nowadays. The Lindt & Sprungli Chocolate Factory Shop is open to visitors on a street known as Seestrasse.
The Heidi Weber Museum

Hurray for the colours!
With Lake Zurich as a special guest, this multi-coloured construction is one of the most curious museums that you will find, and not just in Switzerland, but the whole of Europe: we're talking about the Heidi Weber Museum, which is also known as Maison de l´Homme. The history of the building goes back to the 1960s when two Swiss men struck up a friendship: the famous architect Le Corbusier, and the artist Heidi Weber. These two men started this project based on a simple idea: a gallery in which Weber's works were to be exhibited within the architect's parameters. As Le Corbusier died during its construction, the artist was obliged to take charge and change the contract of the building, so that one of the master's assistants could finish it in his honour. The Heidi Weber Museum is a venue for several exhibitions, but it's worth visiting just to see the building's exterior.

There is something you should know before analyzing this museum: the artistic trend of industrial architecture was one of the most active and significant in Switzerland during the 20th century. That is why the Haus Konstruktiv Museum is a centre which is completely dedicated to the maintenance and exhibition of this trend. This place is an institution dedicated to historic analysis and constructive, conceptual and concrete art. Throughout its multiple sections, you will be able to get close to this movement and up to the most important work in the place by the Swiss artist Fritz Glarner titled Rockefeller Dining Room. But the visit doesn't stop here, as the cafeteria is almost as important as the exhibition itself where they usually organize exhibitions and debates on these artistic trends. To discover this museum will help you to have a better understanding of the rest of the city, and of the appearance of its buildings.
The Mühlerama of Zurich

Welcome to a different and alternative museum from the conventional kind of museums that you have seen up until now: the building which houses the Mühlerama is situated in a former windmill that was later used a brewery. The construction was carried out in 1913 but it wasn't until 1989 when it was refurbished in line with the style of the Belle Époque. The building isn't surprising, as its contents are... dedicated to windmills themselves: you can visit the engine room which has been maintained in operation to show visitors the process of the grain being turned into flour. There is also a historic section that shows the importance of windmills during the city's evolution and for its economy. Mühlerama was built to entertain visitors, and it even includes different activities for children, as well as its own restaurant and a piano bar where you can taste the local cuisine.

Priceless value
During the 1920s, the popular industrialist Emil Bürhle moved to the city of Zurich to start collecting works by very famous painters such as Monet, Courbet, and other great impressionist artists. As years passed by, this collection of artwork resulted in Switzerland's largest private art exhibition, which is currently situated in Bürhle's old house in the south of the city, and is open to the public. Over the three floors, you can do a tour that will guide you through the numerous trends in the history of art: on the ground floor, you'll find works between the 16th and 19th centuries, among which Van Gogh and Renoir appear. On the first floor, you'll find an important 20th-century exhibition with paintings signed by Picasso and Derain; and on the top floor, you'll go to a real journey through time by observing religious works from the 12th to the 16th centuries. This is a must!

Also known as Museum Bellerive, this place is a real institution in the world of design, and shows how some disciplines like architecture or graphic arts relate to people and form part of their daily lives. This museum of applied arts was inaugurated during 1968, and its permanent collection, in addition to the different temporary exhibitions the museum has held, have all contributed to earning it a famous name on an international level. Extensive collections of posters, graphics, and designs are on display but perhaps the most outstanding collection is the textile exhibition which includes several works, ranging from the 4th century to our time nowadays with special emphasis on works in the style of art noveau, and Japanese and American tapestries. This museum is also home to some remarkable glass, wood, and ceramic works. This is undoubtedly one of the city's most intriguing cultural centres which is bound to impress you.
The Swiss Museum of Fine Arts

The height of good taste
The wealth of its collections turns it one of Switzerland's most important museums, and into a must-visit for any lover of good taste. The Museum of Fine Arts in Zurich (Kunsthalle) houses important works by genius painters such as Paul Cezánne, Breughel the Elder, Canaletto, Munch, Renbrandt, Manet, and El Greco, as well as an interesting collection of prints where you'll have the opportunity to observe grand creations by Alberto Durero, Nic Hess, and Salomon Gessner, among others. Two of its collections are particularly noteworthy, and they are taken care of down to the last detail: the modern art collection, in which Chagall, Kandisnky, Matisse, Giacometti, and Picasso turn into the real protagonists; and the collection of photography featuring photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Stieglitz. The Kunsthalle was founded in 1910, and its enormous dimensions have caused it to be divided into three different areas. Don't miss it!
Botanical Garden
A walk round the most typical flora of the region, and a recreation of tropical and alpine climates.
Pure nature
This is an excellent way to know and understand the region from a different point of view. The botanical garden belongs to the University of Zurich and its construction began in 1833. In 1851, the greenhouse started to take shape which presently enjoys so much recognition that it is considered as one of the city's protected monuments. This centre offers a chronological and geographical tour round the natural world, as well as an introspective look at the region's flora where Zurich is located, which is marked by its own characteristics and different to what may be found in the rest of the country, due to its orography. The botanical garden also shows natural recreations of tropical, Mediterranean, and alpine climates in addition to a spectacular area of aquatic plants where a multitude of species are gathered together. The botanical garden is a must-visit for all nature lovers, and a really spectacular enclave.
Cabaret Voltaire
Before it was a cabaret, now it's an exhibition centre... A very curious story!
The birthplace of dadaism
This is one of Zurich's most curious stories. It was during the month of February 1916 when the artist, and one of the most transgressive people of the time, Hugo Ball, founded Cabaret Voltaire above a theatre. The purpose of the centre was for making fun of traditional works through parodies performed in the theatre below. This practice was carried out due to the need for seeking new artistic trends. As surprising as it seems, these original interpretations increasingly gained more popularity and recognition among the public, and the Dada movement was founded in this way which was so arbitrary, and in such a strange place. Cabaret Voltaire was also the venue for intellectuals who embraced surrealism, and a large quantity of alternative trends during the period. Now you can visit inside the building and be a participant of this parallel world, since it was turned into an exhibition centre of the Dada movement in the year 2002.
The Rietberg Museum
Valuable examples of African, American, and Asian art. A must-visit.
Multiculturalism takes precedence
Have you ever imagined seeing works of art that define all cultures in the world under the same roof? In that case, your dreams have just come true: the Rietberg Museum houses an extremely interesting permanent exhibition, where you will have the opportunity to see attractive works of Asian, African, American, and Oceanian origin, and many of which have great historic value. Inaugurated in the year 1952, and located in a beautiful 19th-century mansion, inside this building you'll find important pieces of pre-Columbian art, Hindu and Buddhist effigies, archaeological ruins, and especially an impressive collection of Asian pieces that date as far back as the 2nd and 3rd centuries B.C. Little wonder that the exhibition of Japanese relics is one of the most important in the world. This is a real must-visit during your tour of Zurich. In 2007, another neighbouring building named Smaragd was inaugurated which houses new collections, and is characterised by its remarkable glass design.

Surprising interior and exterior
Welcome to the cultural activity centre par excellence. Throughout history, Zurich has absorbed all the trends and influences of different cultures that visited the territory, starting with the Romans, who were the first rulers of the area, and then the German, British, and French influences. Therefore, a large part of this artistic legacy is found in the Swiss National Museum: this special building is situated next to the Central Station, which you will recognise by its curious construction, as its design looks very much like it has been taken from a fairy tale, thanks to its curved towers and its cone-shaped roof. Inside the museum, you'll be able to enjoy a review of Swiss national history that ranges from the pre-historic era, to well into the 21st century, making it a must-visit for getting to know and understand what the country has been through. In addition, an important collection is exhibited of other very famous artists such as Van Gogh and Picasso.
Hauptbahnhof – Central Station
An important meeting place for Swiss travellers and those from other parts of Europe.
A frantic pace
This enormous place breaks the usual calmness that you feel on the streets of Switzerland. Zurich's Central Station (Zurich Hauptbahnhof) is one of the busiest railway stations in the world: since this is the last stop of the grand project that was the country's first railway line built during the 19th century, this station became one of the main meeting places for travellers from Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and many other European countries. Nowadays, its platforms are still home to frantic activity throughout the whole day, as around 2,700 trains pass by here each day, and during the night; and if that wasn't enough, the trains run non-stop. The station's impressive installations are well worth visiting: we suggest that you make the most of your visit and have a coffee while you observe the building, and the travellers coming and going, as this will be a an extremely curious experience.
Bürkliplatz
Located in a strategic place, it's famous for its bustling flea market.
From the port to the centre
This popular place situated halfway between the port and the city centre is one of Zurich's busiest and most famous squares, and this is for a good reason: during the 19th century, a decision was made to cover the water that ran under the area with earth, in order to build a green area with wide walkways. Since then, Bürkliplatz has become a strategic mooring point for all boats sailing around the city. Designed by the architect Arnold Bürkli, this place naturally took his surname. Bürkliplatz is located in a very central point, and at only five minutes from a famous street named Bahnhofstrasse. But what really gives life to this place is the market called Flohmarkt Bürkliplatz; a curious street market which is perfect if you are looking for a nice souvenir from Zurich. Here, you'll find typical crafts such as cuckoo clocks, to traditional sweets. You're in Bürkliplatz!
The Alfred Escher Statue
A well-deserved tribute to the pioneer of Swiss alpine railway.
All aboard the train!
Alfred Escher was a politician, business leader, and a very important Swiss engineer for Zurich's development during the 19th century. What he is mainly remembered for of course is his Swiss alpine railway project that ended up becoming the Gotthard Railway. This route gave an enormous boost to the city's industry and allowed a period of great economical development. However, despite being considered as one of the most renowned industrialists of his time, Escher wasn't invited to the inauguration of his own project in the year 1880, as the financial problems and deadlines of the great construction had cost him his post. A fair tribute to Escher has been paid in the form of this statue of him located in Bahnhofplatz, which was designed by Richard Kissling and inaugurated in 1889.
Mülesteg Bridge
This wooden bridge offers one of the best panoramic views of the city.
Unforgettable views
We are talking about one of Zurich's most emblematic monuments. This ancient wooden bridge that crosses the Limmat River from one bank to the other has become one of the most visited places by visitors and residents for many years who come to enjoy the intriguing panoramic views. The horizon is like no other, as you will see the whole city from here, and it's an ideal place for taking superb photos. Even though the Mülesteg Bridge has been restored on numerous occasions since it was built during the 19th century, it still moves on windy days as its peculiar architecture doesn't keep the bridge in an extremely rigid position: this has turned it into a crossing for the brave, and all sorts of stories have resulted from this. It's so famous that you must cross the river from one side to the other at least once during your visit. Now, hold your breath and... go forward!

The third wheel
Together with Grossmünster and St. Peter's, this abbey makes up the city's classic triumvirate of religious buildings. Fraumünster started as a nunnery. In fact, it was Louis "the German" who built it for one of his daughters during the year 853. Since then, it gained political power up to the point that King Henry II granted the convent the right to mint coins, collect tolls, and to hold markets during the 11th century. Fraumünster has rather eclectic architecture in which no particular style stands out, as it comprises a little bit of all the different artistic trends that were transforming Zurich. This building is prominent due to its green-coloured tower, but what really makes this place famous are the magnificent stained-glass windows created by the geniuses Augusto Giacometti and Marc Chagall. These works were completed during the 20th century and represent different passages in the bible.
Schanzengraben
Although it's a bit out of the way, it's worth discovering this beautiful boulevard.
Walks with nice views
Located at one end of Zurich, Schanzengraben is located halfway between a boulevard, a park, and a district. Discovering this area is essential if you want to know the city's history, as it served as a military reference point for the Roman Empire's defence against enemy attacks, as well as an industrial centre, whereas nowadays it's an idyllic area where time just seems to stop. An important restoration project was carried out between 1952 and 1984 which allowed the place to be reinaugurated as a beautiful boulevard that the residents are very proud of. Schanzengraben is a pedestrian area and it runs along next to the river and beside the canals, which is why it was built in a highly recommended enclave for walking along, and to see the historic centre from another point of view. There is usually a lively atmosphere to be enjoyed in certain parts of Schanzengraben.
St. Peter's Church
Crowned by a real wonder: its mural clock is the largest in Europe.
The oldest church
The Roman invasion and control left a permanent trace in the city of Zurich. The first proof of this is St. Peter's Church (St. Peterskirche), which was built around the year 900, and made a boundary for Lindenhof that was also Roman. What will surely attract your attention the most as you observe the building's exterior is its tower that was raised in the 12th century following the Romanesque and Gothic canons, and much like what happened to the central nave. The historic relevance of this church is significant as it is the most important in the city besides Grossmünster; in fact, Zurich's first mayor was buried at this church in 1360. Other interesting facts? Sure: if you look at the tower, you will see that it's crowned by a huge clock. Right, well this is the largest mural clock in Europe thanks to its diameter of 8.7 metres.
Lindenhof Square
To be in Zurich and not visit this square would be a crime. So... don't forget!
Historical centre par excellence
It is incredible that this enclave was once the epicentre of the city's activity, considering the peaceful and tranquil atmosphere you find in Lindenhof Square nowadays. And that's not all, this place has also been the exceptional protagonist in numerous historic battles and incidents in Zurich, since it was the place chosen to build a castle during the 4th century for defending the Roman borders from German attacks. Later, during the 9th century, the emperor Charlemagne decided to build his royal residence here which resulted in an epicentre for meetings and demonstrations with the residents since then. It is with good reason that the oath for the Helvetic Constitution was read at Lindenhof Square in 1798. Now, since it's flanked by Zurich Cathedral, the Limmat River and the city's university, Lindenhof Square makes the perfect location to relax and observe the landscape.

Its auditorium is one of the best in the world, and all great artists have performed here.
Neo-Baroque and lots of oak
The city of Zurich is characterised for being a cultural fusion of different styles, trends, cultural and artistic movements, which has been helped somewhat by its geographic location, and has directly witnessed all historic changes that occurred on the old continent. A good example of this is the opera house (Opernhaus), in which all its lines are magnificent with busts of Mozart, Weber, and Wagner that reign from the top: the Neo-Baroque style of the shapes on its walls are easily notable, having been built over 1,500 boards of oak. The Opernhaus dates back to the year 1891. The interior rococo-style of this opera house is home to one of the most important auditoriums in Europe, its inauguration was carried out with a performance of Lohengrin by Richard Wagner, and the world's finest composers have performed here since then. Incidentally, the Opernhaus was the first opera house in the world to have electrical lighting.
Grossmünster Church
You are before one of the most important buildings in Zurich's history.
It all began here
A visit to Grossmünster church means to go back in time. The Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, which originated in Germany, arrived in Switzerland a few years later to change this country forever: the criticism of the Roman Catholic Church and the acceptance of the new Protestant one took place here in this church, as it was at the Grossmünster altar from where Ultico Zuinglio raised his voice to the believers, in order to defend Protestantism. From an architectural point of view, this is a magnificent Romanesque-style building with certain Gothic touches built between the 11th and 12th centuries, although new parts were added following its subsequent and successive refurbishments. The Grossmünster particularly stands out due to its beautiful stained glass windows, Romanesque capitals, and its bronze doors designed by Otto Münch during the middle of the 20th century, as well as its slender twin towers rising up to the sky, making this church a real emblem of the city.
