If you’re into second-hand music shops, don’t miss a trip to Maurice Lemonnier Boulevard when you’re out shopping in Brussels. This street runs from Place Fontaines to the South Station, and was built between 1869 and 1871. At number 55, you will find Pêle Mêle, one of the most attractive establishments in the area, which specialises in second-hand books, CDs, DVDs, records, games consoles and board games. The South Station is also the scene for an enormous market every Sunday, selling clothing, knick-knacks and food from all over the world. This market is thought to be the second largest in Europe.

Located in the heart of the historic center of Brussels, this pedestrian street turns out to be almost a must when planning successful shopping in the city. It extends between the Place de la Monnaie and the Place Charles Rogier. The figures place Rue Neuve as the second most important commercial area in the country, just behind Meir, in Antwerp, given the high number of shoppers who frequent it. In it, large shopping centers alternate -such as the City2 mall (www.city2.be) or the Inno department store- with branches of well-known international fashion chains and small shops with a varied offer. The nearby Rue des Friepers also concentrates interesting establishments.

Bookshops and art galleries make up the majority of what is offered in this original gallery, which is one of the most charming shopping areas of the city. The gallery was built on Rue de la Madelaine in 1847 and was designed by Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar, who also designed the famous St. Hubert Galleries, which are just a stone’s throw away. Located in Brussels city centre, these galleries also include a beautiful Flemish Baroque façade, which was preserved from an old 18th century house. Bortier Gallery was once part of a larger complex, known as the Market of Madelaine. It is now a great place to lose yourself amongst the hundreds of (mostly antique) books, posters, maps, etchings, paintings, busts, photos and other interesting items.

Saint-Hubert Royal Galleries

Built in 1847 by architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar, these were the first covered galleries in the Old World. Today, the Royal St. Hubert Galleries are not only an exceptional shopping centre, but they are also one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Brussels. Commonly known as Galleries de la Reine (Galleries of the Queen), they are the most distinguished galleries in the capital, and home to over 50 luxury boutiques. Ixelles
A shopping trip in this area is bound to be a success, as it is one of the largest areas in the city.

The 1950s saw the emergence of this commune in the south of Brussels, which is now one of the city’s most cosmopolitan areas. Avenue de Louise, a monumental road connecting the city to the Bois De La Cambre forest, divides Ixelles into two halves. This avenue is the most ‘chic’ place in the area, and is lined with some of the most exclusive clothing shops. Avenue Louise, Avenue de la Toison d’Or, Boulevard Waterloo (where you will find names such as Versace, Chanel and Armani) and Chaussée de Charleroi form this high fashion, high-budget shopping axis, offering international brand-named clothing, lingerie, cosmetics and footwear. On your travels through Ixelles, you will also be able to see its Art Nouveau houses, built in the early 20th century. The European Parliament is also located here, on Rue Wiertz, and is open to visitors over the age of 14.

The Belgian Film Museum, at number 9 Rue Baron Horta, programs exhibitions around the universe of the Seventh Art and shows classic films that will delight the most cinephile visitors. Magritte Museum and Constantin Meunier Museum
Two famous artists and two great places to learn more about them.
Surrealism and Impressionism.
This is the most extensive collection revolving around the master of Surrealism, René Magritte. The Magritte Museum opened its doors in 2009 and admission if 8 Euros. The house of Impressionist painter and sculptor Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) is now a museum dedicated to his life and work, exhibiting his sculptures, paintings, drawings and watercolours. Royal Museums of Art and History

Different exhibition spaces in the Belgian capital are concentrated under the general name of the Royal Museums of Art and History of Brussels, among which are the Cinquantenaire Museum, the Horta-Lambeaux Pavilion, the Halle Gate, the Japanese Towers, the Chinese Pavilion and the Museum of Musical Instruments in Brussels. Along with them, three libraries are also included: the Central Library of Belgium, the Library of Antiquity and the Library for Chinese Studies. Brussels Toy Museum is situated in an old mansion dating back to 1900, at 24, Rue de l’Association. It offers permanent and temporary exhibitions, which are usually themed and aims at allowing the visitor to touch and experiment with everything on display. It is open every day from 10 am to 12 pm, and from 2 pm to 6 pm. Adult admission is 5.50 Euros, children’s admission is 4.50 Euros, and there are also group and family discounts. Musical Instruments Museum
A collection of unusual musical instruments, located in a setting like no other.

Treat your eyes and ears to a visit to the Musical Instrument Museum at 2, Rue Montagne de la Cour. Situated in a beautifully restored Neo-Classical/Art Nouveau building, it boasts four galleries exhibiting 1,200 old instruments from all over the world. One area is dedicated to Belgian inventor Adolphe Sax, who invented the saxophone. There is also a concert hall, a workshop area and a bookshop. We highly recommend visiting the restaurant and shop on the top floor, which offers stunning views and a very decently priced lunch menu. The City of Brussels Museum

Also known as the Maison du Roi, or House of the King, the Museum of the City of Brussels is one of the most iconic buildings on the Grand Place. Amongst its many treasures, you will find wonderful collections of silver and porcelain made in Brussels, sculptures, furniture, etchings, beautiful 16th and 17th century Flemish tapestries, paintings, priceless altarpieces, and much more. One of the most unusual exhibits is the replica of the Manneken Pis, signed by J. Van den Broeck. This is where the Manneken’s seasonal outfits (including an Elvis, Mozart and Mickey Mouse one) are stored and exhibited, when they are not being used for special occasions. International Jacques Brel Foundation and Musée Victor Horta

Two historical figures.
Jacques Brel is one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 20th century and also one of the most charismatic personalities born in the city of Brussels. The Jacques Brel International Foundation was established in his honor, whose mission is to gather, preserve and restore all the documents and materials related to the artist's life and work, as well as disseminate his knowledge. Since 2011, the foundation's new building has been located on the Place de la Vieille-Halle-aux-Blés. You will be able to follow in the footsteps of this famous singer thanks to the official website www.jacquesbrel.be. Another famous figure in the city was the architect Victor Horta (1861-1947), who also has a museum in his honor, located at 25 Rue Américaine. An impressive façade, speckled with Baroque and Flemish features, crowned with an equestrian statue of Charles of Lorraine, welcomes you into the Brussels Beer Museum, one of Brussels’ most unmissable institutions. Located at the heart of the Grand Place, the building has been managed by the brewers’ union since the 14th century. A steep wooden staircase leads you to the museum entrance on the lower floor, which is where your journey through the world of Belgian beer brewing (with the help of some audiovisual features) begins. Bois de la Cambre Park

In the south of Brussels, you will find this impressive open space, which is ideal for those who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a long walk, bike ride, run or picnic in peace. It dates back to 1861 and was designed by German architect Edouard Keilig, who was inspired by 18th century England and sought to imitate the erratic character of nature. There is a vast man-made lake with an island in the middle of it, which you can access on a small ferry, as well as a cultural centre offering activities such as rowing, horse riding and fishing, an ice skating rink and plenty of attractions for young children, including merry-go-rounds.
Brussels Park
Surrounded by emblematic buildings, this large green space is a great place to breathe in some fresh air.

This is considered to be the largest urban park in the city, and is situated right next to highly important buildings, including the Belgian Parliament, the US Embassy and the Royal Palace of Brussels. Also known as the Royal Park, it dates back to 1775, when it was built on the ruins of the castle of the Dukes of Brabant, which burned down in 1731. After its restructuring, this vast green space was used as hunting grounds for local nobility. Throughout the years, Brussels Park has undergone several extensions and renovations to make it what it is today. Its interior was designed by Bernabé Guimard and comprises numerous fountains and beautiful sculptures. Located right in the town centre, Brussels Park is surrounded by some of the city’s main roads, such as Rue Royale, Rue Ducale and Rue de la Loi.
Cinquantenaire Park and Palace
A tribute to the country's independence, where you can wander around in peace.

Spanning over 30 hectares, the Cinquantenaire Park is one of the best green spaces in the city. Often frequented by local workers who grab a bite to eat here during their lunch hour when the weather’s good, it is considered to be the second most important park in the Belgian capital, after Brussels Park. Leopold II ordered its construction as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence, and it was inaugurated in 1880. Stroll through the gardens and discover numerous statues and fountains amongst the leafy trees. Located in the European Quarter, this park is home to several interesting buildings, such as the Great Mosque (the headquarters of the Islamic Centre of Brussels), the statue of the green dog and the Temple of Human Passions by Victor Horta. It is also home to the Cinquantenaire Palace and its impressive archway. The palace was designed by architects Bordiau and Girault, and was not finished until 1905. There are now three museums inside the palace, namely the Cinquantenaire Museum, Autoworld (or the Brussels Automobile Museum) and the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History. This is where you will find all the greatest architectural constructions of the Old World in one place, even if they are miniatures of the originals. This unusual park is located in Bruparck, next to the Atomium. Visit the Greek Acropolis, London’s Big Ben, the Grand Place of Brussels, the gondolas next to the Ducal Palace in Venice, and many more emblematic European monuments, all 1/25 of the original scale. Mini-Europe has around 350 buildings from almost 80 different European cities. The attention to detail in these models and lively scenes they represent, such as the eruption of Vesuvius, is outstanding. This park was inaugurated in 1989 and spans around 24,000 square metres. Laeken Park and Belvedere Villa
Escape the city's hustle and bustle on a stroll through this park.
A green space with much to see.
Laeken Park stretches over 160 hectares, and was created by King Leopold II in 1850. Inside, the 18th century Belvedere Villa is the primary residence of former King Albert II and his wife, Paola. Other must-sees in the park are the St. Ann Chapel, which is next to a fountain dating back to 1625, and the flamboyant gothic Leopold I monument, which is around 50 metres tall. This is where they also built the Laeken Palace, which has been a royal residence since the 19th century and is now closed to the public, and the royal greenhouses, which house exotic and tropical plants and are only open two weeks a year, between April and May. Don’t miss the reproduction of the Bologna Fountain of Neptune, which is found on Rue Gros Tilleul, and the delightful area comprising the Chinese Pavilion, the Japanese Tower and the Japanese Art Museum. From Laeken Park, go along Avenue de Madrid and you will end up at the Atomium, Mini-Europe and the Planetarium.

Victor Horta is renowned for being one of the greatest driving forces behind Art Nouveau in Brussels. There’s no better place to lose yourself in the lively web of narrow streets in Brussels, than the area known as Îlot Sacré, which means ‘Sacred Islet’. Martyrs' Square

Place des Martyrs Square in Brussels town centre (just steps from Rue Neuve) dates back to the late 18th century and its name (Martyrs’ Square) is a tribute to those who lost their lives in the Belgian Revolution in 1830. Neo-Classical in style, it was designed by architect Claude Fisco in 1775 and built on the site of an old clothes-washing area. It was originally called Saint-Michel Square, in honour of the city’s Patron Saint. Surrounded by traditional buildings, this paved square is now dominated by the large statue in the middle. The Flemish government’s offices are also located on this square.

In the Sablon neighbourhood in Brussels Old Town, you will find the Petit Sablon Square, which you will recognise by the statues that surround it, representing the trade estate of the Middle Ages. Surprisingly, you will find an urban garden inside, which was designed by architect Henri Bayaert and inaugurated in 1890. The Grand Sablon Square is another elegant must-see in the city, and is surrounded by shops, cafés and some of the most sophisticated restaurants. De Brouckère Square

This is one of the most prestigious squares in the city. Triangular in shape, it is right at the heart of the metropolis, in the centre of Brussels. This is where you’ll find the most famous theatres and cinemas, including some that are no longer used, such as the Eldorado theatre. Between 1930 and 1970, De Brouckere Square was known as the Belgian capital’s mini-Broadway. The square takes its name from Charles de Brouckere, who used to be the mayor and a professor at the University of Brussels. Royal Theater of Toone

Here is a curious puppet theater that will delight any member of the family, whatever their age. Located on Rue du Marché-aux-Herbes, at number 66, it is considered by many to be the most original and popular of all the scenic spaces in Brussels. It is a traditional and picturesque puppet theater, which includes a performance room in the attic with colored cushions on wooden benches, a typical tavern with black beams and bricks, a library, a video library and a puppet museum, where you will discover old dolls with threads already removed from the scene. The Belgian Comic Strip Centre

The history of comics has never been so well illustrated as here in the Belgian Comic Strip Centre. Its building was designed by Victor Horta, the great master of Art Nouveau, making it worth a visit in itself. Housing both recent and historical publications, the museum also has an interesting library and timetable of events, as well as temporary exhibitions, which are always related to the world of comics and animated drawings. Unsurprisingly, the most popular attraction is the section dedicated to Hergé, the famous creator of Tintin, which is found in the area referred to as the Museum of Imagination. This is where creations of the most important Belgian comic strip artists up until 1960 are displayed, including work by Jijé, E.P. Royal Library of Belgium

The largest book collection in the country.
Also known as Albertina, this is the country’s most important library. Lose yourself in the millions of items it has to offer, including thousands of incunable copies, manuscripts, 700,000 etchings, important bibliographic collections and every book published in Belgium, as well as others published elsewhere, but signed by Belgian authors. Royal Palace
Although this is no longer the Kings' residence, don't miss a visit to this palace and its gardens.
Where the country is governed from.
Dominating the upper part of the city is Brussels Royal Palace, or ‘Palais Royal’. This symbol of the country’s Constitutional Monarchy is where the Belgian King performs his duties as Head of State. It is no longer his official residence, as the monarch and his family now live in the Royal Castle in Laeken. This Neo-Classical building is found south of the Royal Park at 16, Rue Brederode. William I, king of the Netherlands, ordered for this palace to be built in the mid-19th century. It was remodelled in 1904 under the orders of Leopold II. In addition to the King and his cabinet’s work offices, the palace is also home to the functions rooms, which host large receptions and official ceremonies. Just in front of the Royal Palace, you will see the Parliament of Brussels. Since the queen’s initiative in 2002, the building also houses three contemporary artworks, which are Jan Fabre’s ‘Heaven of Delight’, Marthe Wéry’s ‘Série Monochrome’ and Dirk Braeckman’s ‘Portraits’. Brussels Stock Exchange

A hive of activity.
On Boulevard de Anspach, you will find another of the city’s most beautiful buildings, namely the Brussels Stock Exchange, which was built between A868 and 1873. Architect Leon-Pierre Suys was responsible for the construction of this building. Eclecticism reigns supreme here, where Neo-Renaissance meets the Second Empire, with ornaments and sculptures signed by famous artists of the time, such as Auguste Rodin. Standing on what was once a marketplace, the attention to detail is exquisite in this building, which was built as a response to the plan to beautify the city of Brussels in the late 19th century.
Everard 't Serclaes Monument
They say that this statue grants the wishes of anyone who touches it. It can't hurt to try for yourself!
Make a wish.
This statue, found on Rue Charles Buls in one of the Grand Place buildings, is another interesting attraction in Brussels. Everard Serclaes, Lord of Cruyckembourg, was a famous Brussels resident, who liberated the city during the 14th century War of Succession of the Earl of Bramante. Belgian artist Julien Dillens made this bronze statue in his honour. Legend has it that this sculpture of Everard Serclaes will grant the wish of anyone who touches it. It is therefore not uncommon to see people making the effort to ‘polish’ it with their hands, which is why this hero’s figure is so much shinier than the rest of the building.
Church of Notre Dame du Grand Sablon and Church of Notre Dame du Finistere

Known for their stained glass windows and portico.
The Church of Notre Dame du Grand Sablon stands on the east side of the square that bears the same name, in the heart of the historic center of Brussels. It dates from the beginning of the 14th century and was built in the late Gothic style where there used to be an old chapel. The most notable are its stained glass windows, considered the most beautiful in all of Brussels, as well as its spectacular organ and its Baroque pulpit. For its part, the Church of Notre Dame du Finisterre, built in the 18th century, between 1708 and 1730, is in the Baroque style. Its portico is adorned with Doric columns, while inside the white marble altars and multiple altarpieces stand out, as well as an imposing pulpit made of carved oak wood. You will also like its stained glass windows, designed between 1853 and 1870 by Pluys and Richard Berns. The Church of Notre Dame du Finistere is located on Rue Neuve, opposite the famous Inno department store.
St. Nicholas Church and St. Mary Magdalene Church

Two small churches close to the square.
The 13th century saw the birth of the Church of Saint Nicholas, the Patron Saint of merchants, which is the oldest temple in the city. This beautiful church is located just steps away from the Grand Place. Although it is of Gothic origin, its interior is Baroque, but Gothic elements have been preserved throughout. The choir’s seating area is one of the most valuable decorative pieces in the building. St. Mary Magdalene Church is a small temple that is also just a stone’s throw from the Grand Place, on Rue de la Madeleine. This Gothic church dates back to the 13th century, but has been remodelled on several occasions throughout the years. Its collection of stained glass windows is particularly stunning.
Grand Place

The most crowded part of the city.
Jean Cocteau described the Grand Place as ‘the most beautiful setting in the world’, which sums up this beautiful, central square in Brussels. It is the most iconic square in the city’s everyday life, and one of the most famous in all of Europe. This rectangle measures no more than 110 by 68 metres, and is flanked by impressive architectural constructions (such as the Town Hall and the Palace of the Dukes of Brabant), which are mainly Gothic-Renaissance in style. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, and has been the scene of many important events in the city’s history, such as the Ommegang Medieval festival every July. Don’t miss the flower and bird market, which takes place every day of the week.
Manneken Pis
This will be one of your first stops in the city. Here he is!
The most photographed child.
The Manneken Pis is without a doubt one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. Its name literally means ‘boy urinating’. At only 61 centimetres tall, this little bronze sculpture depicts a naked boy urinating into a fountain. There are many stories behind its origin, including the most widespread rumour that a rich businessman lost his son while visiting the city and set up a search party to find him. The boy was found smiling and urinating in a small garden, so his father decided to help with the building of a fountain, which would incorporate a statue of his son on top of it. Look for him in the very heart of Brussels Old Town, at number 46, Rue de l’Etuve. It is not uncommon to find him in various costumes, which has become a tradition on special occasions at different times of the year. The Manneken Pis has around 800 outfits, which are mostly kept at the City of Brussels Museum, inside the King’s House at the Grand Place.

Built for the World’s Fair in Brussels in 1958, this unusual monument covered in steel represents an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times. Its striking, futuristic 103 metre tall structure is a real fusion of architecture and sculpture, and houses a museum and exhibition centre, with permanent and temporary exhibits. Designed by architect André Waterkeyn, the Atomium symbolises (as its official homepage points out) ‘the will to keep peace between nations, faith in progress and an optimistic look towards to the future in a modern, technological world, improving the life of humanity’. Cathedral of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula in Brussels

A luxury for your eyes.
It is one of the essential monuments of the city. Gothic in style, it is very close to the Central Station of Brussels. Its construction lasted between the years 1226 and 1500 and, over time, it has undergone different remodeling or restorations. It was not until 1962 that it began to be considered as a cathedral, but as a collegiate church. Its impressive western façade with vertical lines, which lacks a rose window but has a large Brabanzona stained glass window, has three porticoes and two towers. The interior of the nave presents 12 cylindrical columns with the statues of the 12 apostles. Be sure to visit the choir, the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, the Chapel of Maes and the Chapel of Our Lady of Liberation. Precisely, the first of them, that of the Blessed Sacrament, houses the treasure of the cathedral, with masterpieces of religious art, such as a sculpture of the Virgin and Child by the Teutonic artist Conrad Meit or the painting The Legend of Saint Gudula, by Michel Coxcie. Another of the most beautiful details of the architectural ensemble are the stained glass windows from the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries that represent different religious passages.
