Village of Zarautz

Discover this old fishing village on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, turned into a tourist resort. About 20 kilometres west of San Sebastián, it is one of the most important towns in Guipúzcoa. Enjoy its spectacular beach, one of the prettiest in the region. And, if surfing is your thing, you can do some or watch others riding the waves from your towel on the beach. There's a reason this beach is the venue for the World Surfing Championship. Venture into the historic quarter and you will see mediaeval buildings, such as the church of Santa María la Real. Mount Igueldo

Take one of the oldest cable cars in Spain up the side of Mount Igueldo. The excursion is worth it in itself. At the top, a unique amusement park awaits you, operating since 1912. Santa Clara Island

As if you were watching over the city, the island of Santa Clara awaits you right in front of the Playa de la Concha. It serves as a parapet to prevent the whimsical swells reaching port. This small island is not 50 metres high. However, it is a true secret paradise. The residents of the area know it well and make the most of its charms when the good weather arrives. In summer, with low tides, it will be easy to access it. It is a perfect place to spend the day: there's a beach, a bar, picnic areas and a nice walk to the lighthouse. A little trivia? Here you will find the Iberian lizard of San Sebastián, which lives exclusively on this island and on Mount Urgull.

Discover the Peine del Viento at the end of the promenade that connects the Playa de la Concha with Ondarreta at the foot of Mount Igeldo. You will find one of the best known works by Chillida, the famous Donostia sculptor. In 1977, the architect Luis Peña Ganchegui designed the place to house the artist's sculptures. Since then, they have stood up to the storms of the Cantabrian Sea. An impressive fusion of nature and art. Each of the sculptures weighs 10 tonnes and is exposed to the sea and the wind in a rock breakwater. Take the time to admire them: you will understand why this creation is one of the city's greatest prides.

Mount Urgull

Mount Urgull is one of the most important symbols of San Sebastián. In fact, it has played a very important role in its development. Thanks to its privileged views, this mountain was already an essential military point for safeguarding the city. The Castillo de la Mota is preserved from that time. Visit the House of History inside it, a museum that will transport you back in time so you can discover all the historical stages of the city. In addition, the old fortress is immersed in a green area. Walk at your own pace, surrounded by trees, and breathe in the sea breeze. At its northern end, you will find the English Cemetery. You will enjoy almost aerial views of La Concha Bay, without leaving the city.

Located in La Concha Bay, Ondarreta is sheltered by Mount Igeldo, opposite the island of Santa Clara. A little more exposed to the sea than the Playa de la Concha, it has great sporting activity. According to surfers, it has excellent "lefts". When the sea is too wild at La Zurriola, this beach becomes the best option for some surfing. When you have had your dose of sun and sand, you can visit the Peine del Viento, the famous work by Chillida. Then follow the seafront promenade. You will pass by the Playa de la Concha and La Zurriola. A pleasant 7K walk.

There are some dates when the city is all decked out and traditions are experienced like at no other time. If you are in San Sebastián on 21 December, don't miss the famous Santo Tomás celebrations. The city becomes a huge country market. It is your opportunity to enjoy traditional products, such as "xistorra" (spicy pork sausages), cheese or cider. On 20 January, there is another very special event: the impressive 'Tamborrada' (drum parade). More than 100 drum companies flood the streets to pay tribute to the patron saint of the city. The rhythm keeps time with the March of San Sebastián and other works by Raimundo Sarriegui, a composer from Donostia. Visit Donostia on these dates. You won't regret it!

'Traineras' are rowing boats characteristically used in the Cantabrian Sea. They used to be used for fishing in the open sea. Little by little, racing in this kind of boat became popular and today it is one of the traditional sports with the largest following in northern Spain. The La Concha Regatta has been held since 1879 on the first two Sundays in September and the city can't wait for it to come around. All areas surrounding the beach, from Mount Urgull to Igeldo, the pier or the island, fill with fans cheering on their team. Join the spectators and experience the excitement first-hand. After the competition, the action moves to the tapas bars in the centre. Follow the trail and you will see a special, fun atmosphere.

As you can see, the summer season is the time when most of the city's activities take place. The month of August sees the festivities of Donostia's Big Week or 'Aste Nagusia'. But the Great Week gradually added street music, rural sporting events and firework shows as it grew. San Sebastián Surfing

San Sebastián is one of the essential destinations on the peninsula for surf enthusiasts. The Playa de la Zurriola delights surfers. If the waves are big, the Playa de la Concha itself becomes a very appealing option. As do the beaches in neighbouring towns. For example, important international championships are held in Zarautz. This background saw the appearance of the Pukas brand and its fabulous boards in 1979. Its creators were three family members from Gipuzkoa: Íñigo Letamendia, Marian Azpiroz and Miguel Azpiroz. La Bretxa Market

San Martín and La Bretxa are the two big markets in Donostia. La Bretxa is located on the Boulevard, halfway between the cubes of the Kursaal Centre and the city's town hall. It has been here since 1870 and was remodelled in 1898 by the architect José de Goicoa. Under the outer canopy, you will find stalls selling fruit, vegetable and cheeses that come directly from the farms. On the lower floor, there are preserves, charcuterie, meat and fish. In the rest of the building, there are clothing stores, franchises and other shops.

San Sebastián is not only home to the International Film Festival and Jazzaldia. Culture remains alive all year round. Just stroll through its streets at any time to discover real treasures. The catalogue includes self-produced records and music of all styles: from the 60s, soundtracks, funk, blues... New, second-hand, posters, t-shirts... Cállate La Boca is one of the most famous clothing labels in San Sebastián. Its creators are two friends: Oscar Casla and Mikel Erentxun, a popular singer-songwriter and the former lead singer of Duncan Dhu. They studied architecture together. Oscar used to create fun, primitivist drawings of icons of the Basque city and culture. Mikel used to wear these designs on his tours. That's how it all began. Other friends joined in, such as the popular singer Amaia Montero, former member of La Oreja de Van Gogh, partner and brand ambassador. If you'd like to take away some of these colourful illustrations, there are T-shirts, accessories, prints and lots of fun objects.

San Martín and La Bretxa are the two most important markets in the city. The origins of the San Martín market date back to 1884. With its steel and glass façade, it has become one of the symbols of Donostia's historic quarter. A few years ago, the city council demolished the building to build a more modern one to meet new needs. If you want to try some delicious regional fish and discover a town with lots of personality, visit Getaria. It's a little over half an hour from San Sebastián by bus. This is the hometown of the sailor Juan Sebastián Elcano and of Balenciaga, a famous haute couture designer. The entire coast, the port and the jetty still retain the spirit of a seafaring town. It is worth noting the silhouette of Mount San Antón, which is known as the Getaria mouse because of its resemblance to that rodent. From there, you have an interesting panoramic view of the Basque coast. After your walk, find a restaurant and get ready to enjoy the best fish in the area. And don't forget some traditional txakoli, the local wine, which is fabulous and made at the local wineries, where you can also try it. This area has the Txakoli de Getaria designation of origin.

Txakoli Wine
Old and special – that's how to best describe this drink that is practically unknown outside the Basque Country.
Basque cider.
When having pintxos in the centre, the custom is to accompany them with what are called 'zuritos': baby beers. However, we suggest that you also try a typical alternative from San Sebastián itself: 'txakoli'. Txakoli is to this region what cider is to Asturias. It is made in the areas surrounding the city, especially in the towns of Getaria and Zarautz. Strictly speaking, it is a white wine with moderate alcohol content (between 9.5% and 11.5%) and it has a designation of origin. Opened in the Belle Époque, this café is still running. You can have breakfast or pintxos here. It is located halfway between the Kursaal and the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, both venues for the International Film Festival. This is why it became a meeting place for the stars attending the festival. For example, Ava Gardner and Liz Taylor have been to this café. A museum open in honour of cement? Surprising as it may seem, this idea has managed to carve out a niche in cultural tours of the city. It was created as a tribute to the old Cementos Rezola factory, one of the economic drivers of San Sebastián in the 19th century. In this museum, you will discover lots of curiosities about the past and present of concrete. You will be able to learn about the history of the Gipuzkoa city by following the vicissitudes of cement and its constructions. In addition to visiting the exhibition, take the opportunity to go for a walk and get to know the city's surroundings. The museum is located in a very beautiful setting, in the Añorga neighbourhood, about 3 kilometres from the centre.

The Basque and the universal. Arteko's programming is based on international avant-garde trends and, to the same extent, on Basque artistic expression. It is a centre for the study, maintenance and development of the country's culture. It was created in 1996 and its new site is on Calle Iparraguirre. Its permanent collection contains works by Chillida, Baroja and other exponents of Basque culture. The building has several rooms for temporary exhibitions. Check its programme. You will be able to see works by artists of renowned prestige and experimental creations by young creators. You can even sign up for talks by the artists themselves.
Aquarium

This aquarium, founded in 1928, is one of the most visited attractions in the city. It is at the end of the port area and you can walk there. Here you will see about thirty aquariums dedicated to the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic. You can see marine species up close from the glass tunnel. You will be impressed by the biodiversity of the oceans. Besides an aquarium, you have a museum. In addition to the library, this cultural centre has several exhibition spaces. The Erakustaretoa Room is focused on international visual arts. The Ganbara Room provides a showcase for unknown Gipuzkoa artistsin the areas of the arts, design and graphics. It also has a space dedicated to the universe of comics. In addition, concerts, poetry recitals, talks and conferences are held in the auditorium. Find this museum at the foot of Mount Urgull. You will see two very different buildings: one old and one modern. Both are the sites of this museum dedicated to Basque society from prehistoric times up to the present day. It houses collections from different disciplines: fine arts, archaeology, ethnography... The old building was a Dominican convent in the 16th century, It is Gothic in style with some Renaissance touches. The first pieces were installed in 1902: it was the first museum in the Basque Country. The modern pavilion is to one side of it It has a total surface area of more than 11,000 square metres.
Naval Museum

A journey into the past.
Remains of ships, maps and cartographic utensils from all eras, testimonies of wars and shipwrecks... In this small naval museum, you will learn about the most maritime episodes in the history of San Sebastián. You will see how it has developed from a fishing village into one of the main ports in northern Spain. The museum is in an 18th-century mansion in the port area, just before you come to the aquarium. Church of Iesu

The Iesu Church is one of the most unique religious buildings you can imagine. The smooth, white walls house a spacious, bright space within straight lines. You will see an original bell tower on one of the façades. It is located in the Riberas de Loiola neighbourhood, on the outskirts of the city, next to the historic district of Amara. This modern, rectangular building was designed by the famous architect Rafael Moneo. Nearby is La Memoria Park, built in memory of victims of violence.
Hotel Maria Cristina

A five-star establishment.
If you take a walk along the river, you will come across this glamorous hotel, which is where the stars of the San Sebastián International Film Festival usually stay. The beautiful building bears witness to the architectural style of the 1920s. Today it offers several luxury suites inspired by the Belle Époque. Its architect, Charles Mewès, also designed the Ritz in Madrid and in Paris. This hotel was opened in 1912, as was the Victoria Eugenia Theatre. These buildings are just over 100 metres apart. The famous red carpet that the stars of the festival pass along is rolled out between them every year.

The San Sebastián Royal Yacht Club is located in a curious, boat-shaped building located right by the sea. It is just a few metres from San Sebastián's town hall. It was designed in 1928 by the architects José Manuel Aizpurúa and Joaquín Labayen. It is one of the greatest examples of rationalist style in the world. In fact, it has been named a Monument and Asset of Cultural Interest. Today it is a key to learning about the city of the thirties. If you take a walk along the beach, visit the yacht club: you will see beautiful views of the bay.
Miramar Palace

At the end of the 19th century, San Sebastián became a favourite tourist destination for the wealthy classes. In 1887, Queen María Cristina chose the city for her summer break. That was why this spectacular building was built at La Concha Bay opposite the island of Santa Clara. The Miramar Palace is in the style of an English cottage. Its architect, Selden Wornum, also designed the palaces in Biarritz and Saint Jean de Luz. The three buildings are similar in appearance. The gardens surrounding the palace are worth a visit.
Constitution Square

At the heart of the Old Town.
This huge square is located in the centre of San Sebastián's historic quarter and is one of its liveliest areas. Its terraces and bars are very popular. In addition, the city flag is raised here at the start of every 'Aste Nagusia' (Great Week). It is also the place where the traditional drum parade in honour of the city's patron saint starts and finishes. The square is the work of the architect Pedro Manuel de Ugartemendía. It was built after the devastating fire of 1813, which reduced many buildings and monuments to ashes. Today it is known locally as "la Consti".
City Hall

A jewel from the Belle Époque.
During the Belle Époque, this beautiful building served as a ballroom and casino for the city's bourgeoisie. Built in 1897, it was a meeting point for artists, intellectuals and politicians until 1924. In that year, gambling was prohibited. In 1947, it became San Sebastián's town hall. It is located amid great beauty: right at La Concha Bay, surrounded by the majestic Alberdi Elder Gardens. There you will find tamarinds, palm trees and flower beds, as well as a children's play area. Just behind the town hall lies the city's historic quarter.
Victoria Eugenia Theatre

An iconic building.
Fabulous shows have been enacted on the stage of the Victoria Eugenia Theatre for more than a century. Nowadays, there is an appealing programme in a carefully restored space that retains all the charm of the past. Building on it began in 1912, as it did on the luxurious Hotel María Cristina. Both buildings are architectural jewels from the Belle Époque and are very close to each other, separated by just over 100 metres. It is located on the banks of the Urumea River, almost opposite the Kursaal Centre. The theatre was built by the San Sebastian architect Francisco Urcola.
San Sebastián's Big Three Bridges

There are three bridges over the Urumea River that encompass a large part of San Sebastián's history from the 19th and 20th century. The oldest is the Santa Catalina, neoclassical in style, built in 1872. The María Cristina is possibly the most beautiful bridge in the city. Its main features are the four obelisks at its ends crowned by sculptures. Built in 1905, it was once a symbol of modernity. The Zurriola, better known as the Kursaal Bridge, was built in 1921. It is the closest to the mouth of the river. To complete your tour of bridges, you can see some very nice modern constructions, such as the Mundaiz Bridge or the Lehendakari Aguirre.

The Kursaal Congress Centre and Auditorium is one of the most iconic buildings in the city of San Sebastián. It is located opposite the Playa de la Zurriola. The huge translucent glass cubes look like two beached rocks. To get there, cross the Urumea River over the historic Zurriola Bridge. In addition to being the venue for the international film festival, this conference centre houses different spaces for cultural activities. It is the work of Rafael Moneo and has received one of the main European prizes for contemporary architecture: the Mies van der Rohe Award. The building was built on the same site as San Sebastián's Gran Kursaal Marítimo, which included a casino.
Cathedral of the Good Shepherd of San Sebastián

Gothic beauty.
Pinnacles stretching up to the sky, beautiful stained-glass windows, gargoyles... You'll be impressed by this building in Gothic style. Be sure not to miss any details, inside or out. For a moment, you will feel like you are in the German city of Cologne. But you are in the centre of San Sebastián. Building began on it with the expansion of Amara, a programme for expanding the city at the end of the 19th century. The council contributed what was marshlands at the time. In fact, there was much doubt about the viability of the project. Nonetheless, the architect Manuel de Echave took charge of building this huge Gothic church, inspired by the German cathedrals of the previous century.
