Tourist guide: what to do and see in Venice

The choice of unconditional history lovers can be found between the islands of the Venetian lagoon. On the other hand, nowhere else will you find such peace and quiet as here. If you're looking for one of these two, you can take a trip by vaporetto on the lagoon for about an hour. This island was the first place to be occupied throughout the whole lagoon after the fall of the Roman Empire. Whilst you are a part of it, you are a part of Venice in as much that you're sure to enjoy its festivities as much as the Venetians themselves. Apart from Carnival, the city celebrates many festivals throughout the year. The first weekend of September sees the celebration of the Regata Storica in which the gondoliers of Venice compete, as well as the Rowers of Genova, Pisa and Amalfi. More impressive, however, is its inauguration, with various historic vessels parading along the Grand Canal. On the 21st of November, you must see the celebration in honour of Santa Madonna della Salute, to whom people prayed to relieve the plague of the seventeenth century. In her honour, gateways are set up on one of the channels between San Marcos and Dorsoduro, so that worshippers can make a pilgrimage on foot to her church. For similar reasons, the Feast of the Redeemer is celebrated on the third Sunday of July. During the same, the bay between Venice and the Island of Giudecca fills with all kinds of boats. On these vessels, people place tables to eat from, leading to a floating party. However, you should also attend the night before, as you cannot miss the incredible inaugurating fireworks display.

For certain you've heard of it, but to live it is an unforgettable experience. Around April, for ten days and ten nights the shines once again as it did in the eighteenth century. However, its origins date back much earlier to around the twelfth century. It was then that the celebration emerged as a concession to less wealthy members of the population. In those days, restrictions were loosened and all kinds of amusement were allowed. Some even say that people could speak badly of the aristocracy without fear of reprisals. Due to this licentious context, the tradition of wearing a mask began to emerge. Nowadays, however, the celebration looks back primarily on the period when this tradition reached its peak, just before it was forbidden by Napoleon. It was not until 1979 that the festival was celebrated again; however, since then it has quickly returned to its usual splendour. The best way to enjoy it is not just to take photographs, but rather experience it from the inside. Finding a costume is, obviously, an easy task in this day and age. During the celebrations, especially on the Tuesday of Carnival, you have to go to St. Mark's Square, which is filled with colours and truly impressive costumes.

If you are a cinema lover, you might like to fit your trip in with the festival. Continuing with its old role as an artistic patron, between August and September, Venice sees the celebration of the Mostra Internazionale d'Arte cinematografica di Venezia. These awards of great international prestige are held in the same category as those of Cannes or San Sebastián. Its origins date back to 1932 when it emerged as a result of another of Venice's major exhibitions, the Biennial. During the course of its history of more than eighty years, it has seen several changes. Even though it started as a competitive festival, at various stages it has focused more on searching for novelties or providing honorary awards. Nowadays, however, its Leones de oro are awarded according to the same criteria as other festivals of its calibre. During the festival, the Island of Lido is the venue for its opening and award ceremonies, as well as the most important screenings. Between the Palazzo del Cinema and the Palazzo del Casinò, there are a number of rooms. To attend, it's enough make your way to the island and buy the tickets as far in advance as possible, given that they sell out quickly.

This place is striking from two points of view. For those interested in medicine, it represents an exceptional document of medical history. On the other hand, it is a perfect place to learn about a most peculiar part of life in times passed. Situated on the Island of San Servolo, between Venice and Lido, there stands what was originally a hospital for plague victims. Later, it became a psychiatric hospital from the eighteenth century until the end of the twentieth. Nowadays, it operates as a university; however, inside can be found one of its darkest corners. Its little known Museo della Follia is designed to provide an extensive exhibition that explains how patients were treated, back when the building served as a lunatic asylum. From straight jackets and electric shock therapy tools to a collection of photographs of patients during the nineteenth century. Something less lugubrious, though equally interesting, is the old pharmacy. This is the place where the multitude of medicines were once produced for the city, including some treatments for syphilis in the age prior to penicillin. A visit to this island, though gruesome, is certainly unique and different with regards to the rest of the city.

Simply entering to view the building's interior is already worthwhile. This house of music is located in the historical centre, a stones throw from St. Mark's Square. Since its construction in 1792, the building has hosted the most important operas in recent times but it has also suffered several fires and renovations. The latest, in 2003, gave the building its current appearance. Whether or not you are interested in ballet or opera, you cannot miss the opportunity to a performance. In attending, you will be experiencing these art forms in one of their key locations from around the globe. With Italy undoubtedly being the mother of opera, this theatre is one of the finest places to attend such grand classical works as La traviata or La toscana and, following a long tradition on the continent, Venice has at its heart a singular weakness for this art form. Together with the chamber orchestras, these performances are one of the city's most interesting aspects to be delved into. It can be found in one of its most impressive forms in the Palazzo Barbarigo-Minotto, opposite the Grand Canal, close to St. Mark's Square. Intimate concerts are performed between servings of cheese and wine inside this fifteenth century Gothic palace. It is one of those experiences that has to be lived in order to be understood, as the sensation of listening to a concert in this way cannot be explained with words. Nearby, between the Academia Bridge and the campo Santo Stefano, we find the Chiesa San Vidal. Inside, the acclaimed band Interpreti Veneziani perform a wide selection of concerts. The band's musicians have been playing great works, primarily Vivaldi, for more than fourteen years. Recognised around the world, they offer one of the best opportunities to enjoy music in this city rich in the arts.

If you want a different getaway at night in Venice, this little tour might be worth your while. Though Venetian nights tend to be seen as romantic, Venice hides a much darker side. Leaving from the Rialto Bridge towards the north, there is a tour of the lesser-known parts of the city. In the meantime, the guide recites an endless list of the grimmest stories. From ghost legends to popular crimes, your perception of the city will change drastically as, amongst the labyrinth of small streets, you begin to feel a sensation of total abandonment. In fact, the vaporetto can also take you to the islands that surround Venice, such as Burano or San Michele. The gondola is, undoubtedly, the most emblematic image of the city. Limited to a small portion of the Cannaregio district to the north of the city, this Jewish neighbourhood was one of the first to be created in Europe. This makes it an ideal place to get to know their culture. Here, in addition to visiting the Jewish Museum and the different synagogues, it's worth taking a stroll through the streets. If you are not in a rush, it's best to stop in each liturgy and kosher product shop that you see. On the one hand, your attention will be drawn by everyday objects that range from clothing and accessories to various types of decorations. The majority of these decorative objects are closely linked to the religion and it is interesting to learn about their uses. If you would like to learn more, it's a good idea to find out first if the trader is sociable or not. The other interesting part, from a commercial point of view, is the food. Don't hesitate to stop in the different kosher shops or aptos , that only sell food products that are approved by biblical and Talmudic law. This law is quite strict and peculiar but, if you have time, don't forget to try the food, either in shops or in any of the restaurants.

The treatment of paper is one of the most deep-rooted activities in the city, though not so well known. Whether you're looking for a souvenir of Venice or if you work with paper, throughout the city centre you will find a multitude of specialised shops at your disposal. One of the most characteristic forms is the paper of waters or the marbled paper , which is normally used for book covers. Although at first glance they may seem uninteresting, have no doubt that they will draw your attention in a shop window. Their designs are varied and incredible, such that no two are the same. This is, of course, only if we are looking for handicrafts shops. A good place to find them is the street Fabbri, where several locales, such as the famous Goldoni, can be found along the street. Inside, you can also find all sorts of engravings and manuscripts, all of which are attractions for history fans. Near the campo Francesco Morosini, in the San Marco district, the shop of Alberto Valese-Ebru offers paper, books and albums. Another very popular point is Legataria Piaseis, close to the campo San Lorenzo in the district of San Marco.

You will love visiting this market if you are a fan of antiques; however you should note that it only appears on rare occasions. For a few days spread throughout the year, the Campo San Maurizio is host to one of the most striking markets in Venice. Between St. Mark's Square and the Campo Santo Stefano, this Mercatino dell'antiquariato is a true place of pilgrimage for collectors. One reason for this is the low price of the majority of the items to be found here. In any other market, though you might find similar pieces, the price tends to be higher. If you are nearby, it doesn't matter even if you don't want to buy anything, it's enough to pass by and look. The intrigue of these products attracts both buyers and passers-by. Even among the old books, weapons, household utensils or clothes, you are sure to see more than one thing that will grab your attention. Despite not being the only working market of its kind, this one is special due to the large quantity of objects, some several centuries old, that can be found there. If, by chance you can drop by, it is a truly special place from which to take home a souvenir of the city.

The masks are, quite possibly, the greates icon of this city and their origin is one of the most curious tales the entire continent. Though now they only represent the Carnival of Venice, their use goes back to the XIII century. Historically, concealing one's identity was a regular part of various activities. Being a city of traders and due to its small size, many times it was advisable to hide one's face, given that it was not always desirable to know who was dealing with who. Little by little, they began to play a social role by providing all citizens with an equal voice. However, over time they became a breeding ground for the realization of less pleasant activities. Due to increases criminal activities, their use was limited to certain dates or celebrations. Nowadays, however, they are one of the most popular souvenirs and they can be found all over the city, both in souvenir shops and in authentic handicraft shops. If you are a clothes and textiles enthusiast, you'll know that Italy is an unmissable destination. However, Venice, above all, is one of the most select spots. Several of the country's most important companies can be found along the city's commercial streets. It's worth the trip even if you don't come to buy, as the atmosphere of the area and the look of its old, narrow streets is always entertaining.

One activity that will bring you much closer to the city is going shopping on one of its markets. The historical city, which even now keeps this tradition very much alive, is a perfect place to try the country's natural products. Its rich food culture is one of its most popular features and the opportunity to buy from one of its markets arises on a daily basis. Apart from the most representative market, the Rialto market, you will be be able to find others that are equally worth visiting in Cannaregio or Castello. Small stalls along the city's narrow streets or squares are also common. Every Monday in Santa Marta, in the southeast corner of the city, you will find a farmer's market where you can deal directly with the farmers that sell their products. Here you will find meat, cheeses and vegetables of a quality that is difficult to find elsewhere. A little further north, in Santa Croce, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in the morning, there is the market dell'Altraeconomia. A market specialised in local, organic, fair-trade products, where you will find fruit, vegetables, wines and cheeses, as well as a place to buy medicinal plants and handmade clothing.

It doesn't matter if you don't buy anything, it is definitely worth going one morning to see the market next to the Rialto Bridge. This place has been a commercial site for centuries and today it is still an icon of commerce in the city. The interior is a beautiful sight with the mixture of colours and peoples that populate the market. On arrival, the area is flooded with the haggling of traders and customers, voices advertising products and the hustle and bustle of people and people. A tour of the market will not take very long but it is worthwhile to pass through its two sections. cf cf It's best to start at the far side of the bridge, where you will find the cf cf pescaria, cf cf since these stalls close before the rest. cf cf Here you will catch the smell of seafood and fish, even from a distance. Walking around, it's a real spectacle first thing in the morning, to see the sailors bringing goods to be placed on the stalls. cf cf As you get closer to the bridge, you will come to the cf cf erbaria cf cf , the most colourful area of the market where you will find all sorts of fruits and vegetables. cf cf Mid-morning is a good time to try some of the natural produce sold there.

Every corner is full of the city's rich historical heritage. As a result, the city is an ideal place to acquire all kinds of antiques. Whether you are an antique enthusiast or if you simply want to take home a unique souvenir of Venice, you have to come to Fondamente Nuove. Have in mind that it is only open during the last weekend of March and April and the first weekend of May, September, October and December. To get there, head towards the Ca' d'Oro and from there head up towards the north. Upon arriving at the northern edge, you will recognise it immediately by the hustle and bustle which is noticeable some streets before you get there. It's impossible to say what you will find passing from stall to stall as they have all kinds of different origins. From furniture and decorative objects to incredible curiosities such as letters from the Second World War or sailors' personal objects. Of course, here you will find a large and interesting old bookshop and a large number of glass items from the Island of Murano. Even though it's not the only flea market of its kind in the city, it it the only one that you can't miss if you have the chance.

Come to this island only if you want to have a very quiet, pleasant walk. cf cf If so, you will have to take a cf cf vaporetto cf cf for around forty-five minutes but it is worth it if you want a complete change of environment. cf cf The small island, of some four thousand inhabitants, is easy to get around without spending too much time. You will recognise it instantly upon approach, given that even from a good distance you can appreciate the bright colours of its façades. It's best to bring your camera as you'll want to use it constantly. In addition to its main textile industry, which inundates the streets with stalls from which it will be difficult for you not to buy some kind of souvenir, the main attraction is its appearance. Each of the low buildings boasts a different colour, giving the walk a very lively and cheerful feel. The roots of this tradition are not clear but there are several theories. The most romantic ones say that the fishermen painted their house in order to be able to see it from the open sea while they worked. Others, on the other hand, say that they did this in order to be able to make their way back on foggy days. Whatever the case, it is a custom which, nowadays, is carefully maintained.

Here you can find one of the small gems hidden by the Laguna Veneta . This island, situated to the north beyond the Island of San Michele, is an ideal option for anyone looking for peace and quiet and an interesting walk. Once there, there are three things that we have to do. The first thing, is to visit one of the glass factories which represent the island's fundamental base. Despite what many people think, this visit will be more interesting than you might expect. Given that the island is the birthplace of glass-making from the thirteenth century, both the technique that has been developed and the history are truly impressive. After seeing the glass blowing in the factories, if your curiosity has been peaked, the Glass Museum is well worth the visit for its historical pieces. From chalices and phoenician bottles to chandeliers weighing more than three hundred kilos. Later, after your visit, you can pass by the churches of Santa María, San Donato and San Pedro Mártir. The first is believed to contain the bones of the dragon that killed San Donato and the second contains works by Tintoretto and Varonese. Between the two, don't miss walking the small streets of the island to see the many adorning sculptures.

An alternative for those that want to go for a less ordinary trip. The Island of San Michele is situated opposite the north face of Venice and designed in a straight line. It is a resting place where many of the city's inhabitants are interred. Despite its dark nature, the place is frequented more often than one might imagine, as it provides a place to meditate or rest away from the noise of the city. Providing the background for the walk, the peculiar cemeteries are items of interest for many visitors. This is due to the multitudes of graves they contain and the custom of adorning them with various objects. As you arrive, you will see signs directing the way to both orthodox and protestant cemeteries. Even so, do not forget that it is very easy to get lost between the hundreds of niches, mausoleums and trees that populate the island. Once you've finished the walk, you mustn't leave without going to see the Church of San Michele, which was one of the first renaissance churches to be built in the area. It is best to check the opening hours before coming to visit. From here we can take vaporetto back, or you can go to the Island of Murano.

If at any point the bustle of Venice becomes too much, you have a nearby getaway. This island, not far from the southeast of the city, provides an escape for both Venetians and visitors. To get there, all you have to do is take one of the vaporettos that leave the city continuously. Once you've arrived, the main attraction of this place are the more than twelve kilometres of beach that surround the island. As can be expected, in summer the beach is usually quite busy but this does not stop it from being one of the favourite places to spend a day of rest. On the other hand, there is more to the island than just sand and sea. The walk that shows off both the western and eastern sides of the island are really worthwhile. If not the entire walk, given that it is a considerable distance, it is worth walking at least until its half-way point. To get away from the busiest area, you can take a bus that will take you to the south where you can spend the day eating in a restaurant and seeing the area. The shops here are less oriented to tourism and the views of the Adriatic Sea provide spectacular scenery If you can, walk back through the western area at sunset.

You have to go to the southern part to take a quiet walk and breathe its air with the smell of saltpeter. But it is better to do it with time and calm, since despite being a scant kilometer and a half you will not be able to avoid making numerous stops. You can start at Saint Mark's Square and walk west from there. With the Basilica di San Giorgio Maggiore as the background, the promenade will be framed by the boats on one side and the various shops and terraces on the other. The first part is made up of the Riva degli Schiavoni, where merchants used to moor. When crossing it today it is easy to imagine the movement of sailors and artisans in his time, since it continues even though its appearance has changed. After leaving the Bridge of Sighs in the distance and having walked, stopping safely at one of its peculiar stalls, the walk becomes the Riva Ca di Dio. After a few meters, it is replaced by the Riva dei Sette Martiri, which turns green as we approach the Trento park, a perfect place to rest. When you return, you will be guided by the view of the San Marcos campanile in the distance. The best thing, if you have time, is to return at night to do the tour again, since it will seem like a different place.

Come here to see the city's true atmosphere; only Venetians come here. To get here, make your way to Dorsoduro and walk north until you come to Uva street. It doesn't matter what time or what day; this is always an interesting destination. In the mornings, the square hosts a market selling primarily food. If you can blend in, come and see the surrounding area camouflaged as just another Venetian. During its quieter moments, mid-week and after eating, you can take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a coffee or a spritz on one of the terraces. It is also well worth a trip to the gelateria Doge on one of its corners. If you're tired of walking around the city, a break here can become prolonged as the atmosphere never encourages you to leave. On the contrary, as the afternoon winds on you will see that the place gets more and more lively. If you didn't already have plans it's best that you liven up too, as the area is full of life at night. Both venecian students and workers come here, particularly at the weekend to enjoy a few drinks in a pleasant atmosphere. If you fancy staying out a little later, this is the ideal place.

One would not expect, upon visiting the church of San Juan and San Paolo, that its surroundings would be as captivating as the building itself. However, there is something about this square that makes you want to stay a while. One possible reason is because of businesses here, in that they are local stalls and less accustomed to tourism. This is a perfect opportunity to have a chat with the Venetian traders and you will see that their sociable reputation is not without reason. In addition to the shops in the vicinity of the square, this is a good place to have an ice cream, coffee or a spritz on one of the terraces. As in the rest of the city, it is difficult to find a meter of land without some history behind it, so you cannot leave without seeing the statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni that crowns the plaza and the striking building of the Scuola Grande di San Marco. After the visit or rest, from here we can connect any tour with the northwest of the city.

Come here when you want to hide away for a while. Despite being close to the heart of Venice, this plaza is one of the few sites where you won't be overwhelmed by crowds. You take a detour through here for lunch or rest on the way between the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark's Square. Its tranquil terraces are at your disposal where you can have something to eat or drink. Although if you prefer, it is an ideal place to get closer to the fountain and source and see the people who pass by, normally busy workers if they are Venetian or curious passers-by if they are tourists. Often you will find the atmosphere complemented by musicians or painters who come along to practise, giving the surroundings a more interesting tone. Even so, if you're restless and prefer to keep soaking in the history of the city, this is the place for you. The Church of Santa María Formosa dominates this space. It is worth going inside to see it and to listen to one of the concerts there. You will have to double back in order to appreciate from a certain distance the campanile that complements the church. From here, you can return to the original route, although if you have time it is worth strolling around a little to see the antique shops and the neighbourhood façades.

Welcome to the most beautiful venue in Europe. Or at least that's how Napoleon defined it after invading Venice. This place is the first thing you should visit, not only for its beauty, but also because of the fact that it is the neurological centre from which the city grows outwards. Although it began to form in the ninth century, four hundred years had to pass before it took on the form it has today. Surrounding it are some of the most important buildings of Venice such as the Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Basilica and the Campanile. As you might expect, especially in the summer, you will most often find it to be full of life and activity during the day as well as at night. All this makes coming here an impressive activity but also at very high prices because it is really unique. However, its mere presence is already part of one of the things you have to stop and look at passing through the square.

One of the best ways to eat in this town is to do so on any of its canals. The city has several restaurants with terraces, but this is certainly one of the most welcoming. A short distance west of St Mark’s Square, close to Calle Contarini Corfu, you can quickly find the restaurant. On entering, you will see it has a very attractive indoor dining room, dominated by a fireplace and decorated with various classical objects. But despite its pleasant interior, don’t hesitate to find a place on the terrace. From there you will see on one side Ponte delle Ostreghe and on the other the mouth of the Grand Canal. Enjoying your food from there is virtually assured thanks to the environment offered by its pleasant position, especially if it's daytime for eating while watching the characteristic traffic of the gondolas. But if you go for dinner, the situation becomes more romantic, accompanied by the nightly serenades in the canal. Once you are seated, you will see that the menu offers food from Venice and the Veneto region in all its varieties. Although it meets everyone’s taste, the highlight is its seafood.

Before going back to sleep for the night, you have to go at least once to this charismatic place. You can also go there to dine lightly, because here you can accompany the wine with Italian savouries. It’s really worth trying some, they are the most renowned in the city. In fact, it is said that it is the cook himself who is responsible for buying the ingredients in the Rialto Market. But what really makes this place famous among fans and specialists is its wine list. In a city that loves fine drinking, this is undoubtedly one of the best places to start to get familiar with this tradition. Ideally, the best is to start inside, where the decor helps you spend a pleasant evening, then eventually go outside to the small terrace at the entrance if the weather is good. If you prefer, it also offers dinner, but you’ll see that its charm lies in the wine and savoury tasting. Despite its location near the Rialto, at the crossroads with Cavali Castello street, it is rare to find it crowded. This way you can be sure of a calm way of rounding off any day.

A perfect place if you want a dinner in peace and not too far to walk if you're in the centre of town. To get to it from St Mark’s Square, head east through the Castelo neighbourhood, look for the street called Sacrestia and it’s just a few steps away. On entering, all it takes is a quick glance to find the food that awaits you. You’ll see that the walls are literally teeming with traditional Venetian paintings, from portraits to landscapes. This, coupled with its wooden pillars and lanterns that shed a dim light on the dining room, will give you a nice intimate tone to the evening. And the same is true of the food; the menu consists of a long series of traditional dishes that have the reputation of never being disappointing. From pasta to fish, through different types of cheese and meat, here's a perfect place to start tasting the cuisine of the city. To accompany the meal, the place lives up to its reputation with a list of various quality wines. But the most interesting aspect, despite its touristy location, is a clientele that is usually balanced between residents and visitors, because it is popular for its value for money.

This place is not only suitable for pizza lovers. Although it is undoubtedly its signature dish, the menu also offers other options worth trying. It is also strategically located in the geographic centre of the city. Here in Campo Sant'Agostin square, the tourist areas of the city are just a short distance away, but without suffering the turmoil that characterises them. The square itself is a nice place to include in a walk, because it is very quiet and has a typically Venetian appearance. If you can and the day allows it, eat on the terrace, because the atmosphere is very nice. Once you sit down, be ready for the discussion about choosing a dish because the menu is very long, but bear in mind that there is no bad choice. However, when planning to go to lunch or dinner, make a reservation or go well in advance because it is usually crowded. Being a reasonably priced option, considering that eating in town is not cheap, the tables tend to fill quickly during peak hours. So it is best not to forget that here you eat according to European times, usually between midday and two in the afternoon and eight to ten in the evening.

Even if you are not a big fan, it will be difficult for you to pass through Venice without trying one of its ice creams, another of the strong points of its gastronomy that stands out above other areas of the country. But when we find a gelateria, we must take into account some things. The first thing is that the site will attract your attention instantly, since the ice cream arrangement is usually a real spectacle. Second, because you will see that it is one of the best places to try different flavors, since varieties are made from the best known to those typical of the Veneto area. But when looking, you have to pay attention to the prices, because if they are very low, it possibly means that they are not handmade. On the other hand, the most famous ice cream parlors are in San Marcos Square, although they have high prices. But from here in any direction you won't have much trouble finding several places. Some of the most frequented are Paolin in Campo Santo Stefano or Il doge in Campo Santa Margherita. Investigating you can find some lesser known and of great quality such as La Boutique del gelato east of the Rialto Bridge or Groom in Campo San Barnaba.

Any time is a good time to stop and sit down to have a coffee. Even better on a terrace if the weather permits. But it might now take a little more to find one that is free, because they generally tend to fill up, particularly in the squares and open spaces. Keep in mind that this happens after lunch, at about half past two or three, when most coffee shops in the centre are crammed. Knowing this, it is worth taking a break in any visit and enjoy the atmosphere offered by places like Caffè Quadri in St Mark’s Square or any small coffee shop in Cannaregio such as Mq10. On the other hand, those with a sweet tooth should not miss the chance to enjoy a coffee in a classic Venetian pastry shop. Pasticceria dal Mas close to the station, Vio in the Accademia are, Harry's bar in Giudecca and Rosa Salva in St Mark’s are some of the many spread throughout the streets of the city. If you come across one that catches your eye, do not think twice, just sit down for a drink. However, look carefully at the Antichi Pasticcieri Veneziani sign offering a guarantee of quality and bear in mind that prices generally tend to be high.

Pizza is possibly the most famous food in this country. But Venice is particularly proud to have a unique pizza compared with other cities in Italy and all those who try it say that here is where you eat the best pizza. To try it, don’t waste time and sit down to eat, because the most common way is to buy a slice to take away. Besides being practical, it is one of the cheapest and most typical meals. Sliced pizza is a perfect way to eat if you have a day full of things to do. If you’re walking around the San Polo district, the small Antico Forno near the Grand Canal is the best choice in the area. To the north, in Terra San Leonardo, there’s a pizzeria called L'Angolo which is somewhat hidden and is a favourite of the Venetians. These are just some, but while walking you can be assured that you'll run into a pizzeria anywhere. So don’t worry about looking, because what will really cost you is choose from the varieties that fill the shelves.

This seafaring city is one of the cradles of gastronomy with a fishmonger tradition. Where or not you’re a lover of this, you have to try their fish and seafood. First, it is caught in the Adriatic Sea and its rivers and lakes; secondly, it usually comes from the open sea. Shortly after arriving in the city, you will realise that this genre of gastronomy is present in all possible varieties of eating in the area. From the antipasti up to the savouries, which is a very common way of eating quickly and lightly. Apart from dishes with whole fish, there are three ways to approach a meal if you are not particularly fond of fish or seafood. Whether with rice, pasta or soup, when you stop to eat be sure to try it at least once. One way of getting to know this cuisine is closer to the fish market near the Rialto Bridge. Around this area, there are several places specialising in fish savouries that are worth it. Here, you can go from one to another in the squares and order a savoury and some wine to consume out on the street. Another particular alternative is closer to L'Osteria di Santa Marina, in the same area, to taste a variety of uncooked fish dishes served there.

You cannot go anywhere in Italy without stopping to eat a bowl of pasta. Venice is no exception. Throughout the city, many traditional restaurants are opening up, though not all offer homemade fare. So the recommendation for starting is to avoid the busiest areas and take some time to find a place to eat. If you're walking in the northern part of the city, you can look for the Dell'Oca street near the Grand Canal and enter the Osteria Ai Promessi Sposi. Although somewhat difficult to find, it is well worth it if you want to eat homemade pasta in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, because here the premium is on quality food and treatment. Visiting the southern part of the city, if you are in Dorsoduro, when it’s time to eat you can walk to the southernmost tip of the city, near the Gallerie dell'Accademia, to eat in the Taverna San Trovaso. Here, although there is more variety, you will find a good example of handmade pasta at an affordable price. You can see this, because the diners are usually workers from the area or students. It is also a good place where you should not miss trying the pasta nero di sepia or pasta with prawns.

This visit is an alternative to the rest of the city and can take some time. Although not as popular, the Jewish quarter has a charm and a special interest that substantially separates it from other areas. Secluded in the Cannaregio district north of the city in 1516, Jewish society has inhabited this area turning it into a true living museum. What you first notice on entering is the calm and quiet in contrast to the bustle of the city. Here there are not many tourists and it is the perfect place to spend half a day for a peaceful tour. It's best to start with the Museum of the Ghetto Nuovo, which contains a collection of objects from between the 17th and 20th centuries. Objects in gold, musical instruments, manuscripts and documents are on display as a demonstration of the importance that Jewish culture has had in Venice. This is a small tour, but from here you can take a guided tour through some of the synagogues of the ghetto which complement the visit. Once completed, the best thing to do is walk around and visit the kosher shops, bookstores or, if you have the chance, some synagogue where they still perform religious ceremonies.

Crossing the Grand Canal to the south, in Dorsoduro, you’ll find the Rezzonico family palace. As with many others in this city, you need a few minutes to pay attention to its well-kept facade. Take your time. But when you're done, be sure to enter to dive a little deeper into the cultural heritage of Venice. Inside, there is the museum dedicated to 18th century Venice which collects works of art and decorative objects from various parts of the city. From its popular indoor gondola that greets you at the entrance up to the small classic pharmacy on the third floor, the building is a great open book on the history of Venetian life. Its immense ballroom alone is well worth the trip, quickly bringing to mind images of aristocratic and baroque music festivals. The museum reserves several surprises of great artistic value, such as the art gallery on the third floor, but its strong point is the frescoes that decorate the ceilings. Starting with the famous Nuptial Allegory by Giambattista Tiepolo, you will not stop raising your eyes upwards along the first floor. The visit does not take too much time and this is a good place to connect with the Gallerie dell'Accademia or the Ponte dei Pugni.

The brightness of the marble façade will attract your attention from afar, riding down the Grand Canal. But this is just a reminder that, in the past, its original facade was plated in beaten gold. Passing by this building is not to be missed both because of its position in the channel and its impressive appearance, since it is considered one of the architectural treasures of the city. When passing, spare a few minutes to admire its facade but if, after having visited other museums, you still want more, do not hesitate to enter. Inside there is the Franchetti Gallery, one of the most important in this city so rich in art. Transferred to the state in the early 20th century, its collection has been expanded and now consists mainly of sculptures and paintings by both Venetian and foreign artists. There are works of the calibre of Venus at Her Mirror by Titian or Lombardo’s Young Couple, but there are also names such as Tintoretto, H. Van Eyck, Bernini, Guardi, etc. Whether you are interested in the collection or prefer to simply walk, this is one of the sites you cannot miss.

Walking around Venice often leads us back to other eras. But it is in this museum that you can delve a little deeper into that environment between the 17th and 18th centuries, which engulfs its streets. The palace stands near the Grand Canal in the district of Santa Croce, next to the Church of San Stae. It was occupied from the 18th century until the mid-20th century by the aristocrat Mocenigo family and, after the death of its last descendant, it passed into public hands. Although somewhat difficult to find, it can be a very interesting site on the way to the city centre. There, its façade is disguised among the other buildings, but unlike them it retains the same look inside. Perfectly preserved, it has maintained its classic decor and ornaments to serve as a museum about the history of the city. Its most popular and abundant asset is textiles, because it has lots of clothing covering four centuries of fashion. But the mere decoration and furnishings of the palace are in themselves an image that overflows with history. Apart from this, the museum has a library holding nearly five thousand volumes from various periods.

Together with the Gallery of Modern Art, this completes the other half of the contemporary art scene of Venice. If you are interested in modern trends have to visit one of the Guggenheim museum at least once, but this is where it has its main seat. One of the differences that make it stand out from its siblings is its location, in the former home of the Guggenheim family, Venier dei Leoni palace. You’ll find it going down the Grand Canal, before arriving at St Mark’s Square. Interestingly, the first impression you'll have is its small size, because only the first of the four floors that were planned was built. This is why it is also known also as the unfinished palace. But do not be fooled by this because, since 1980, the collection it holds has been and is the most important of its kind worldwide. On entering you will not see anything close to the current scene because it addresses cubist currents of abstract or futurist expressionism. Among the painters who stand out are Picasso, Miro, Dali, Yoko Ono, Ernst and Duchamp, but these are only some of its long list.

The city of Venice is a compulsory destination for those interested in art. Besides its great artistic history, this city remains cradle and patron for today’s young artists. It was for this purpose, at least, that the Duchess of Bevilacqua La Masa bequeathed the Ca' Pesaro palace in the 20th century to serve as host to the Gallery of Modern Art. The building, which in its day was a great baroque architectural masterpiece, was built between the 17th and 18th centuries. The palace, which originally belonged to the Pesaro family, took fifty-eight years to build. Erected on the Grand Canal, north of the geographical centre of the city, this museum is a place of pilgrimage for artists and fans. Walking inside, you'll find both works of great Venetian artists as well as of international artists from the 19th century up to the present, such as Miro, Klimt, Bonnard and Matisse. It is one of the best places to visit to enjoy the culture of this historical city, resting from the religious motives that flood most of its attractions. Something that many people do not know is that the café is a good place to relax with views of the Grand Canal.

As often happens in this city, interest in the museum begins with its building. When you're going down the Grand Canal, its stunning architecture, with its two towers linked by a long row of arches, will certainly attract your attention. It was built in the 13th century as the residence of the consul of Perugia, but throughout its history it has experienced various occupations and remodelling. Its present form was modified in the mid-19th century after having belonged to it most famous occupants, Turkish traders. They used the building from the 17th century mainly as a residence and store, fondaco in Italian, until trade with the East began to suffer. Before belonging to the Dukes of Ferrara, it then passed to the city council to host the Correr Museum for a short period of time. But in 1924, the Natural History Museum of Venice settled here, one of its curious museums and well worth a visit to discover the peculiar experiments city explorers brought to it, marine animals from its shores or skeletons of dinosaurs, among which the intact remains of a baby dinosaur stand out.

Only lovers of painting have here a real paradise at their disposal. If this is your case, it is worth walking to the south of the Grand Canal to enter the building complex erected in front of the bridge of the same name. Since its inception in 1756, the Academy of Fine Arts has been expanded, especially in the Napoleonic period, until becoming the large gallery that it is today. The museum has occupied the church and school of Santa Maria della Carità and the Canoninci Lateranensi convent since 1807. Since then, the Academy has been collecting pieces from different parts of the city, such as churches or palaces. Inside, lie many of the most important Italian works between the 14th and 18th centuries. Although the works of Renaissance painters such as Tintoretto and Titian stand out, the collection also covers great artists like Giovanni Bellini, Carpaccio or Carriera. Among other pieces, take a look at the famous sheet with Vitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci or Titian's Pietà. All this makes it one of the city’s various centres of art, which is almost sacred for any lover or scholar of art.

This is the first destination for anyone who wants to investigate the history of Venice. Although the city breathes antiquity in each facade, it is here, in St Mark’s Square, that you will find the largest collection of objects that identify it throughout its history. It was started by Teodoro Correr between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Later, it was transferred to the municipality around 1830. Since 1887, the museum has been the main historical and attractive map for all students. Once inside, you can enter three main rooms housing three aspects of Venetian art, starting with the building itself. The Civic Museum deals with different aspects of the city, and contains from drawings or illustrations up to carnival clothing or furniture. It is a real guide to its social, political and military history, before and after forming part of Italy. Entering the Archaeological Museum we find mainly ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, but also ceramics, bronzes and coins. Finally, we enter the Marciana National Library, which is the oldest and most complete in the city. Although access is highly restricted, it is worth spending some time to observe its decorations by Tintoretto, Titian and Veronese.

This small bridge located in Campo San Barnaba is one of the many curiosities that the city hides. It is small and simple, so much so that it would go unnoticed if it were not for how it was used in the past. Its name, translated as Bridge of Fists, was born to be the main stage for fights between the Castellani and Nicolotti gangs. Although such confrontations were banned in the early 18th century due to their extreme violence, you can still see the markings indicating where the opponents should be placed when you cross it. By all accounts, the losers were thrown into the canal and the railings you see today are quite recent. A curiosity: on a walk through the city, crossing this anecdotal bridge to reach the Church of San Barnaba, you will surely be familiar with one of the scenes from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which was filmed here. After crossing, both the church and the square are nice places to stop for a drink or a rest. From here, we can continue our walk towards the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Ca’ Rezzonico and the Dorsoduro district.

There is no doubt that the best way to see Venice is to walk through it. Along the way it is almost impossible not to cross its most famous bridge, situated in the geographic centre of the city and connecting the districts of San Polo and San Marco. This is also the oldest of the four that cross the Grand Canal, although its original wood base was replaced with stone in 1581. Today, the bridge is filled at all hours with both residents and tourists who stop there to look out over the canal. But do not worry if you cannot enjoy it the first time, because you are sure to cross it several times during the trip. In fact, the bridge has a special appeal as a place to go at different times of day and night to stop and rest for a while, watching the various shades of the view depending on the time. According to the Venetians themselves, the most impressive times are at dawn and dusk, when the city lights are lit. The other way to see it is undoubtedly passing under it in either a gondola or a vaporetto. Of the city’s many romantic stories, that of kissing under the Rialto Bridge to ensure lasting love is the most famous.

Welcome to Venice’s Sistine Chapel, at least if it is often compared to this building located in San Polo. This is not to be taken lightly, because the interior represents one of the most important pictorial sets in the entire country. Carried out by Tintoretto in the second half of the 16th century, its decoration took twenty-four years. Before that, the place was built as halls of residence in the 15th century, and it was used to house victims of the plague. This is why it received the name of San Rocco, patron saint of the sick. Today, it has nothing to do with this dark past, because all that will fill your gaze on the visit to the three rooms is the great artistic impact of its walls and ceilings. Vital works of the Renaissance such as the Glorification of San Roque, Crucifixion or The Pool of Bethesda are part of its legacy. However little a scholar one is of the history of art, a visit to the Scuola is inescapable, because it is one of the cornerstones of this history. It is also a perfect place to rest for a while and feel inevitably drawn to Italian artistic heritage.

A corner for observing Venice from a hidden place. This palace, possibly the smallest in the city, is lost at one end of the Campo Manin street near the Rialto Bridge. Despite its size, it represents one of the most curious and least frequented of the city where you enter to feel history in intimacy. The first thing you can admire in the building is its architecture, a transition between Gothic and Renaissance of the 15th century. Although it is not certain who designed the building, many attribute the work to Giovanni Candi. Once inside, you must climb its spiral staircase which takes its name, bovolo in Italian, from the inner courtyard. The particularity of this is its location outside the facade and its countless arches, so that by climbing you will see the outside to the patio and Venetian backstreets. After visiting, go to a viewpoint situated at the top of the building which offers a beautiful view of the city. Although it is not as impressive as a view of the city’s belfries, it is particularly appreciated because of the lack of crowds.

You can climb to the top to see the city from a privileged position, unless you suffer from vertigo, because we’re talking about almost one hundred metres high. This belfry of St Mark's Basilica was built in the 11th century as a lookout to guard the city and as a beacon for sailors. The stone you will tread inside is from the 20th century, because the original building suffered a spectacular collapse in 1902. The rest of St Mark's Square suffered slight damage and there were no victims, but it was a historical tragedy for the city. Work began immediately afterwards on erecting a building with a more solid foundation but identical to the original, a decision largely influenced by popular desire. Currently, climbing to the top of the belfry is a popular activity, especially among tourists, so if you intend to do so, it is better seen with time. The wait to climb is usually lengthy, but view the city from up there is, at the very least, an unforgettable experience and one of the most stunning photos of the city.

A compulsory crossing point on the way to St Mark’s Square. Forming the entry to the Mercerie, you’ll find this Clock Tower dating from the 15th century. When you’re standing a few feet from its base, look up to see the blue and gold motifs that shape it, because it was built to impress by looking at from below. Actually, it’s also worthwhile contemplating it from atop the Belfry to be able to enjoy its bell and the two statues known in the city as the Moors, due to the darkening that the bronze has undergone. In either case, it is recommended that you take a few minutes to study the two most important aspects. On the one hand, the architecture of the tower which, being located in the Renaissance period, seeks to combine the different architectural styles present in the facades of the square. On the other, the spectacular clock which counts time and the phases of the moon. It is assumed that initially the reason for this was to guide sailors, but what is certain is that since its inauguration, it has been a hymn to the city and a form of ostentation of its wealth. It is even said that its authors were blinded so that they could not design anything more beautiful.

Guarding St Mark’s Square, the Palace is immediately recognisable. Its solemn architecture and the multitude of arches that support it make it a city icon. Its current appearance dates back to the 15th century XV century; previously it had been more similar to a classic mediaeval castle, because one of its functions had been as the Doge’s residence. For centuries it also served as the seat of government and as a court house, hence, throughout history, the city’s most important policy decisions took shape here. All this turns the visit inside into a real map of the functioning of the republic. If you take a guided tour, you will learn how the government was administered as you go along, although you should bear in mind that this is only available in Italian, English or French. After going through the most important rooms at political and judicial level, you come to the Piombi (The Leads) – or torture chambers and cells where prisoners of the Inquisition were held – across the Bridge of Sighs. This bridge, which crosses over one of Venice’s canals, was so named for the prisoners who crossed it and, it is said, saw the outside world for the last time.

Visiting this church is something that is really worth it for several reasons. The first is that it is a perfect excuse to take the vaporetto, the city’s public water transport, because it is located on a small island facing the Piazzetta, near St Mark’s Square. Inside, a huge 16th century architectural and artistic paradise awaits you. The church and the adjoining monastery were occupied by the Benedictines and were used for military purposes in the 19th century. Today it is the residence of the Giorgio Cini cultural foundation and houses some of Tintoretto’s most famous works: The Last Supper, The Fall of Manna and The Deposition. It also houses works such as Madonna and Child with Saints by Ricci. When you have finished walking through its spacious rooms and its monastery, for which it is necessary to book, you still have the big final attraction which involves undergoing its belfry. The experience is worth it. In addition to paying less than for the belfry of St Mark’s, there is always less of a queue and the views from the top are inescapable and impressive. However, watch out because the bells work all day and you’re sure to get a fright.

When you pass through the district of San Polo, it is possible that this church will go unnoticed because of its austere facade. But don’t be fooled, because the interior has little to do with the outside. It is the second largest in the city. Its construction had to be extended for nearly a hundred years to be expanded several times due to the large number of faithful that it welcomed. Built by the Franciscans in the 15th century, this building houses a huge number of works and monuments that make it one of the key points on the cultural tour of the city. Although its most famous work is the Assumption by Titian, this is just one of many that make a visit unavoidable. Works by Bellini, Veneziano, Sansovino or Rizzo complement its extensive collection of art from the Middle Ages. Another of its main attractions is its mausoleums, highlighting Titian's own and that of Antonio Canova which, due to their striking appearance, are the most popular. Canova’s mausoleum has an added curiosity as it only contains his heart. The rest of his body is buried in Possagno. In addition, his monument was built by his disciples following the design that he had drawn for the tomb of Titian.

For several reasons, this building is a great place to start any tour. St Mark’s Square, where it is located, is the religious and social centre of the city and a place from which to walk to any point reasonably quickly. On the other hand, a visit to the basilica can become quite lengthy because it contains several interesting details that make it a real historical and artistic map of Venice. Work on it began in the ninth century as an extension of the Doge’s Palace, but its purpose quickly changed into that of serving as a mausoleum for the body of St Mark, who became the protector of the city. Just look at its exterior to appreciate the mix of styles that constitute it because, over the years, the building has not been immune to the different artistic trends developed in the city, which was one of the cultural centres of the Middle Ages.
