Mercedes Mora Bakery

Gourmet sweets for gourmands
Another of the legendary bakeries that you must make a point to visit at some point, either to test their exquisite products, or to take home some sweet memories. The Mercedes Mora Bakery on Villar Street in the center is one of the oldest in Santiago, with all that that entails: tradition, craftsmanship and the very finest products. You'll enjoy their "brazos gitanos" (Swiss rolls), their pies, their meringues, their famous stuffed biscuits or chocolates, an almost infinite variety; and you can buy to take away or enjoy their sweets on site, as they have a café inside serving hot chocolate and different kinds of coffee as well. Since reopening in 2007, they have also incorporated new recipes, combining the traditional with the more modern for a truly sublime result. A recommendation? Ask for Bagoas de Compostela, a sweet walnut and egg yolk confection you'll want to try again and again. Want to bet?

The epicenter of Santiago
During the transition to democracy in Spain, many leftist demonstrations took place in this square, hence the name: Plaza Roja, or Red Square. It's the heart of the new part of Santiago, the Ensanche, one of the favorites places for locals to relax in good weather and enjoy a drink in one of its outdoor cafés or go shopping. No wonder, since several important avenues converge here, such as Fray Rosendo Salvado, Cuesta de la Camelia, or San Pedro de Mezonzo. The square, in addition to fashionable shops and banks, hosts various cultural activities and themed markets; it's not uncommon to find clothes and food stalls here on weekends. There's always a good atmosphere and plenty of young people to liven it up.

Just one block from the new part of town, the steep nature of this street and the fountains in the center that simulate a river flowing into the Plaza Roja, give it a special air. Well known to Compostelans for hosting many shops of all kinds, this pedestrian street is the epicenter of this area. Renovated not long ago, it harbors two of the most popular bookstores in the capital: Abraxas and Follas Novas, in which book lovers can find all kinds of literature. The Cuesta de la Camelia and Red Square are two of the shopping areas preferred by locals.

Casa Rabeada is one of top spots for crafts in Santiago de Compostela. The diversity will amaze you, so much so that it may be difficult to choose what you will buy. Located in the old town, it's a kind of bazaar that sells all kinds of handicrafts made in Galicia, in addition to other items: wicker baskets and bags, wooden dishes for serving octopus, various types of furniture, tin pails or even musical instruments such as tambourines. You'll easily recognize the place, as there are bags hanging on the door and probably also some other furniture. Ever heard of Sargadelos ceramics? It's one of the most famous artisanal products in all of Galicia. And no wonder, since the creations that bear their seal, whether tableware, jewelry or porcelain figures, are all hand-finished. Sargadelos pottery has a unique style derived from the traditional culture of the region that's perfectly embodied in each work of art. It was Antonio Raimundo Ibáñez who created the first factory in the early nineteenth century, but this particular gallery didn't open until 1978; since then, in addition to selling crafts, cultural events and exhibitions of various kinds are organized here. If you want to surprise friends or family with an original gift, look no further: this pottery brings together everything you seek.

It would be a crime indeed to leave Santiago without sampling some of its more traditional desserts. A very sweet recommendation? At La Perla Bakery, your mouth will water before you even set food inside, as the window display features heavenly delicacies straight out of your dreams. The name ("the Pearl") is no accident: these are veritable gems for the palate. The most typical dessert of the capital of Galicia is the famous Tart of Santiago, a delicate confection made with almonds, eggs and sugar that will captivate even the most demanding tastes. One of the most important and busy streets of the historic center of Santiago, it's famous for its iconic old buildings and shops that are known not only by locals, but also by tourists. Attached to the Calle do Vilar by the Entrerrúas alley, the narrowest street in the city, here you'll find all kinds of establishments, from tattoo parlors to clothing (with much of the merchandise out on the street itself). It's also one of the best places to get your souvenirs of the city: try the Sargadelos shop for its famous Galician porcelain, or the Libreria Vetusta with its second-hand books. On this street you'll also see the church of Santa Maria Salome, as well as cultural institutions such as the Principal Theater or the Theater Hall.

Not surprisingly, it stands proudly as one of those places that can awaken your senses and raise them to new heights. It has some interesting quirks, such as a machine of offering fresh milk of the day, or the possibility of ordering online. Museum of Sacred Art

Unparalleled religious relics
Whether or not you're religious, don't miss this gem located on one side of the Plaza de Quintana in the Baroque former Monastery of San Pelayo, the beautiful building that houses the Museum of Sacred Art of the Galician capital in the heart of the city. The collection of centuries-old art on display inside is nothing short of spectacular. with a remarkable diversity of paintings, documents, archaeological remains, ornaments, sculptures, gold artifacts and countless relics that will astound you. Particularly noteworthy: the figure of Christ dating from the thirteenth century, the altar that once accompanied the Apostle James' sarcophagus, and a 1610 edition of the Rule of St. Benedict, a unique and truly valuable copy. To access the museum you must walk through the church on the Via Sacra.
Sotelo Blanco Ethnographic Museum

For those wishing to delve deeper into Galician culture, this museum focuses on customs and traditions in the interior of the region, with a special focus on the trades that are still being developed in certain areas, featuring items used by blacksmiths, stonemasons or tanners for their daily work, as well as different farming tools brought from mountainous areas. Of special interest is the section on Galician emigration of the last century, especially to Latin American countries, a fundamental fact of history that has marked the character of the Galician people. The center has two permanent exhibition halls and one for temporary exhibitions. Located at the headquarters of the Sotelo Blanco Foundation, you will it find on the road leading out to the airport.
The Medical School Collection
A perfect stop for curious medical professionals.
For medicine buffs
Okay, maybe this specialized center is not for every kind of tourist, but it can certainly be very interesting for experts and anyone interested in the field. The Medical College of the Galician capital, located in the Faculty of Medicine, hosts this unusual collection of anesthesia-related instruments used in recent decades, true gems of medicine that have become important historical artifacts. Most of the material was donated by the best local doctors. In addition, by way of explanation, there are also engravings that show how these techniques developed in ancient times. Admission is free, and it's open from Monday to Friday. During the month of August, the collection is closed.
Luis Iglesias Museum of Natural History

Attention, nature lovers! You absolutely must not miss the Luis Iglesias Museum of Natural History of the University of Santiago, where you can enjoy a spectacular collection of about 25,000 specimens of flora and fauna from Galicia and other parts of the world. It's divided into three distinct sections: geology, botany (with a learning herbarium created by Baltasar Merino) and zoology, which occupies three rooms: one of them dedicated to exotic wildlife, another explains the wildlife of Galicia, and the last one specializes in European fauna. It's also designed as a center for environmental research and educational outreach, where it's interesting to observe the work of outstanding Galician scientists such as Isidro Parga and Jose Rodriguez. You can visit this center located in the School of Chemistry, and admission is free on the first Wednesday of each month.
Museum of the Galician People

Deep cultural roots
You will not find a better opportunity to dive into the depths of Galician culture. The famous Museum of the People has permanent exhibitions on archeology, sculpture and painting in the region, while other rooms focus on objects related to farming, popular clothing, sailing and other traditional trades. There is also a permanent room with a remarkable music section. It is without a doubt the best way to learn how people in Galicia have traditionally lived and what their most ingrained habits are. Since opening in the 70s, this museum has become one of the favorites of local residents. It's located in the former convent of Santo Domingo de Bonaval and can be visited any day of the week except Mondays.

Speaking of historical value, this museum may well take the cake in Santiago. Just a few steps from Plaza del Obradoiro, the Pilgrimage Museum houses an impressive collection of art and archaeological artifacts discovered in the cathedral during the twentieth century, as well as other important works that were stored in its basements. The heart of the museum is an overview of the different religious pilgrimages that take place in the world, with special attention, of course, to the Camino de Santiago and the Jacobean Route. This is the ideal place to discover its roots and what motivates thousands of pilgrims each year to undertake this unforgettable adventure. It is located in the old Bank of Spain building after an intense renovation by Jorreto Manuel Gallego, a Galician star of contemporary architecture. It covers an area of almost 38,000 square feet.
Eugenio Granell Foundation Museum

A fabulous and versatile artist
Over the years, Eugenio Fernandez Granell has become one of the most important cultural figures of the twentieth century in Galicia, a versatile artist who embraced such diverse disciplines as writing, poetry and painting. Although born in A Coruña, he spent his childhood in Santiago, a city that significantly marked his work; he was in fact named adopted son of the city in 1997. Granell was a surrealist painter who came to rub shoulders with geniuses like Breton and Duchamp, and this foundation disseminates his work: here you can enjoy some of his oils , drawings and sculptures, as well as others by colleagues such as Copley, Miró and Lam. You can also see many objects that he collected in Latin America and the United States, and sometimes, attend scheduled chamber concerts and theatrical performances. The museum is housed in the beautiful eighteenth-century Pazo de Bendaña building.
Galician Contemporary Art Centre (CGAC)
Exhibitions, workshops, seminars, film festivals... Where else would you find so much?
The modern artistic counterpoint
Founded in 1993, this center aims to promote the best of the current art scene, with special emphasis on contemporary creations, thereby greatly expanding the cultural offerings of Santiago. The Galician Centre for Contemporary Art is now well known for its retrospectives and exhibits of works by such prominent artists as Giovanni Anselmo, Medardo Rosso or Ana Mendieta; it has also addressed the life and works of the greatest representatives of Galician culture in recent decades, such as Laxeiro, Maruja Mallo and Rafael Baixeras. The building itself was designed by Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza, who imbued it with his taste for rationalism and modern architecture. In addition to exhibitions, the GCCA also offers interesting workshops, film screenings, seminars and project spaces with artists.

Avant-garde cultural options
This is one of the unique buildings that make up the City of Culture in Santiago, an extraordinary architectural landscape that perfectly represents the modern capital. The Gaias Museum Center stands out mainly for two reasons: first, for its spectacular, curvilinear, 140-foot-high façade, that will certainly surprise you; secondly, because it hosts interesting temporary national and international exhibitions on three floors and more than 75,000 square feet. In addition to these art exhibits, there are also educational activities, work spaces, and on occasion, even outdoor concerts featuring different musical styles such as hip hop, folk or classical music. Keep in mind that admission is free on Wednesdays.

Let's talk about Doña Generosa Carollo
Doña Generosa Carollo, a lady who lived in the late nineteenth century and managed a famous student hostel, was immortalized by writer Alejandro Perez in his novel "The House of Troy." This museum is a perfect recreation of that hostel, with great attention to detail in its different rooms: the dining room, the appliances and utensils in the kitchen, the bedrooms, the owner's room, and a host of objects and photographs related to the protagonists of the novel. They have also managed to recreate the cozy atmosphere of the time throughout its three floors and attic. You may visit from Tuesday to Sunday, and group visits are possible.

The most famous pilgrimage in the world
Perhaps the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) requires the least explanation of all, as you will very likely have heard about this ancient pilgrimage route. Here you will find legends, fantasy and a spirit of self-improvement that surpasses even the religious, as plenty of people do this pilgrimage to achieve personal or spiritual goals. The reward at the end of the (literal) road is not just the opportunity to worship St. James in the cathedral, but also, to walk an inner journey that will surely change your outlook on life. The various pilgrimage routes to Santiago start in many parts of Spain and Europe and then converge on the Galician capital; this grand adventure is particularly recommended on Jacobean years, when July 25, the feast of St. James, falls on a Sunday.
Hejduk towers

New architectural airs
Naturally, as was the case with contemporary cuisine, there is also room in Santiago for avant-garde architecture as a counterpoint to all the historic buildings that are spread around the city. The Hedjuk Towers, named for their designer, New York architect John Hejduk, are one of the most striking features of the recent City of Culture of Galicia's capital. Hejduk designed these towers for Belvis park, but passed away in 2002 before he could complete your project; however, his friend and fellow architect Peter Eisenman included them in the Gaiás complex, where they are currently located. Two symmetrical prisms 66 feet high gradually taper as they reach for the sky, offering a striking contrast: one of the towers is clad in stone, the other in glass. It's a remarkable gateway to modern Santiago de Compostela.

With its small stone fountain in the center, this much-beloved square welcomes locals, college students and religious pilgrims alike. Located in the old town near the cathedral, Fonseca Square connects some of the most important streets in the center. It also features lovely landscaping that adds greatly to the charm. It's best in warm weather when the surrounding cafés set out their tables on the square, making it that much more enjoyable: it's always been said that the nights here are different and never disappoint. It's certainly one of the busiest areas during the summer, and if you're trotting around the historic center all day, there's no better place for a little rest and relaxation.
Bonaval Park
A sprawling green space, ideal for a nice stroll.
For lovers of nature and fresh air.
The full name is Santo Domingo de Bonaval Park, but locals know it simply as 'Bonaval Park'. It's a lush green space behind the Convent of Santo Domingo, hence the name, which also houses other important institutions such as the Galician Center for Contemporary Art and the Museum of the Galician People. It was designed by Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza and landscape gardener Isabel Aguirre over more than 14 square miles and was inaugurated in July 1994; since then it has become one of the favorite areas for Compostelans to stroll and enjoy the tranquility of nature. It's particularly striking to see the number of people who come here on weekends. Inside, you will also find a sculpture by Eduardo Chillida called "A Porta da música" ("the music gate"): two steel columns measuring almost 10 feet in height and weighing 17 tons.

This may become one of your favorite spots in Santiago, one of those places that you return to whenever you visit the city. And why not? The Mirador de la Herradura offers the best views in town, as the view from the top includes the most iconic buildings in the old town, with the cathedral towering over them all. It's a postcard of great beauty that you will not soon forget; not surprisingly, it's one of the most typical images of Santiago, and while the city has a few other viewpoints, this is certainly the best known of all. When to come? We recommend the evening in the company of your significant other, as the sun paints a truly romantic landscape at your feet. It's located in beautiful Alameda Park, almost at the foot of Santa Susana hill, so it's not at all complicated to get here..

An historic building of great beauty
This is one of the most iconic buildings of downtown Santiago, a monumental Baroque pile created in the late seventeenth century by renowned Galician architect Domingo de Andrade. The Casa da Parra is centrally located in the Praza de Quintana, a few steps from the cathedral, and is easily recognizable for its typically Galician granite masonry and tiled roof. Throughout the twentieth century various reforms added the top floor and the beautiful balustrade that crowns the façade, thus giving the building an even more majestic appearance. Take note of the carved balcony supports and its famous chimney, one of its best-known elements. Today, the Casa da Parra primarily houses exhibitions of Galician artists, and can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday.

Want to return to Santiago de Compostela?
Actually, not a fountain as you might expect, but rather a kind of small pond with a metal spout hidden among plants. Still, its charm cannot be denied. It's located on the corner of a courtyard created for pilgrims who want to visit the cathedral to leave their backpacks, as they cannot be taken inside. The best part? The symbolism and spiritual aura the place has had for so many years. On an adjacent wall a sign reads 'If you want to return to Compostela, you must drink from the fountain.' You'll not find a better way to swear undying love for this beautiful city. And if you believe in wishes, throw a coin into the fountain and ask for what you want most. But be careful, it may just come true...
Entrerrúas Alley
The narrowest street in Santiago, unfit for the faint of heart
Claustrophobically narrow
Here, ladies and gentlemen, is the narrowest street in Santiago. Don't believe it? Then try to enter, and you'll see what we mean. Entrerrúas Alley in the historic center links Nova Street with Villar Street, and it's quite interesting to walk its length (assuming you don't suffer from claustrophobia): only people walking in the same direction may use it at any one time, otherwise they reach a literal impasse. The feeling is both strange and peculiar, as you get the impression that the buildings on either side may crush you. A pleasant surprise: along the way, you will find a beautiful courtyard with a bar, a perfect place to stop if the narrowness of the street gets to you.
Tree of knowledge

A fun legend.
In 1911 Spanish writer Pio Baroja published the novel 'The Tree of Knowledge', which tells the life of Andres Hurtado, a medical student disappointed by the education he receives. Santiago also has its own Tree of Knowledge, located on the side of the Pazo de San Xerome palace, at the beginning of Franco street and facing the Cathedral. Obviously, there is no physical tree as such, rather a flat iron tree with hanging branches showing names of different careers and fields: astronomy, philosophy, science, art, biology, mathematics ... It's always been said that the student who doesn't know what career to follow should stand with his back to the tree and point back with his finger to find his future role. This is such a popular stop that the tree had to be covered with glass for protection.
Plaza de Platerías Square

You just need to arrive at this small and charming square to realize that you're entering a place of great charm and historical significance, a veritable symbol of the city. In the Middle Ages it was a busy place thanks to the arcades, where silversmiths and goldsmiths plied their trades; hence the name, Platerías (silver smitheries). It's still a busy place, as it's always full of residents, tourists and pilgrims who have completed the Camino de Santiago, creating a truly special atmosphere. One of its sides is the southern façade of the cathedral, the one with the Clock Tower or Berenguela Tower; in fact, this is also known as the façade of the silversmiths. In the middle of the square, don't miss the famous Fountain of the Horses.

Tapas, anyone?
Another culinary star on Franco Street, the city's main foodie thoroughfare, Casa Rosalia is known for its exquisite wines and homemade traditional tapas. This charming old building is perfect whether you want a mid-morning bite or a full meal later in the day, as there are options for all tastes: a good variety of tapas, Galician octopus, turnovers, squid, salads, mussels and various recipes typical of the region. But perhaps one of the star dishes is the eggs with "chanfaina," a soupy meat recipe to which other ingredients may be added, such as egg, peppers and rice. It's delicious, and the service will make you feel right at home.
O Gato Negro (The Black Cat)

Attention lovers of local pubs: you have come to the right place. O Gato Negro could be called the gastronomic heart of Santiago, a mythical place with a long metal bar that you must not miss; to leave the Galician capital without trying the bar food here is nothing short of a sin. The pub is easy to find thanks to the green window, striking door and the black cat resting on it for years. Don't expect minimalist décor or high-faluting creations, what really matters here is the food: not surprisingly, there are many who say that in this place they have tasted the best octopus in the world, and you'll have the chance to confirm that for yourself. They also offer other traditional recipes such as cockles, Galician turnovers, mussels and Padron peppers. The average price is around 20€, a bargain if you consider the sublime taste of their dishes.

A true culinary "must"
Another Compostela classic, one of those places everyone in town knows. In its day, the O'42 was a pleasant and very busy pub, but due to its great success, the owners decided they should go a step further and create a restaurant. They did so in the 70s, and so far the place has not lost any of its essence. Here you can find the best of traditional Galician cuisine, such as the famous turnovers, squid, scallops, octopus and rice dishes of all kinds; you also have the option of ordering some tapas and thus try a variety of flavors. There's a choice of set menus, with prices ranging between 25 and 35€, with a great selection of starters and main dishes. The extensive wine list is not far behind, offering outstanding options. For dessert, don't miss the spectacular cheesecake with blueberry jam.

Perhaps the best time to visit this restaurant is that moment in the evening when you feel the first pangs of hunger after a pleasant stroll through the city center. This landmark eatery in the historic center of Santiago has an especially good wine cellar, making it an ideal choice for enjoying a good glass of wine with their traditional dishes. It's not inexpensive, of course, but you're on vacation and certainly deserve an occasional splurge. The menu emphasizes mainly seafood, including excellent mussels, scallops, crabs, razor clams, oysters and other more elaborate dishes such as their famous spaghetti in squid ink, seafood rice dishes or stewed oxtail. No matter what you order, rest assured you will not be disappointed.

This restaurant is among the most peculiar you will find in Santiago, what with its roof emulating vineyards and rough stone walls that make you think you're in a village. O Dezaseis is the place to go if you want to feel satisfied, as you get excellent value for your money: exquisite fish dishes average 13€, meat about 14€, and if it's tapas and light fare you're looking for, you'll pay between 5 and 14€, with a good range of options: the famous Galician pork (pink meat from the leg), stuffed eggplant, a salad of monkfish, prawn turnovers... all of these are always safe bets. Also, if you prefer, there's a prix-fixe menu of the day. A personal recommendation? Leave room for dessert, they're fabulous!

Historical place and name
The name of this famous restaurant comes from Don William X of Aquitaine, a pilgrim who died in the mid-twelfth century in the Cathedral of Santiago during the Good Friday services. Given the religious beliefs of the time, many thought it was a miracle that he died in the cathedral on such an important date; thereafter he was known as Don Gaiferos of Mormaltán. The restaurant itself is both casual and simple, but with a certain base of elegance that can't be ignored. Located in the heart of the old town, it opened in the 1970s and since then has become one of the classics of the Galician capital. The traditional menu focuses on delicious recipes such as pickled mussels, sirloin of beef, octopus á feira or broiled seafood and fish, combining Galician cuisine with more international dishes. Its raw material is excellent as its extensive wine list featuring the regions of Bierzo, Toro or Rioja.

And for the less adventurous, they also serve up more standard fare, such as patatas bravas.

There are two very famous restaurants located in the old town of Santiago: A Barrola and Casa Elisa. We've selected A Barrola, with its characterestic stone façade and two windows displaying its excellent fresh fish that make your mouth water before you set foot inside. Inside we find a classic restaurant with very tasteful décor and first-class service. What can you eat here? Traditional Galician turnovers, Tudela asparagus, octopus, squid from the local rías, or the rich Galician soup, ideal for warming the body. A Barrola is also an ideal place to enjoy a good mariscada, a seafood extravaganza that's the real jewel of Galicia: scallops, crayfish, prawns, crabs, scallops and lobster with fresh local fish. On the extensive menu you'll also find all manner of meats and scrambled eggs.

Attention: this is one of the temples of gastronomy in Santiago de Compostela, a place where the art of tapas is practiced to perfection. You'll enjoy almost endless choices including razor clams, mussels, clams, shrimp skewers with Padrón peppers (a house specialty), Spanish potato omelettes, beef kebabs, chorizo sausages in wine, fried calamari, paella ... all presented in ways that may even surprise you. La Taberna do Bispo is a simple, comfortable and very central place, next to the University of Santiago. Sure, getting to know a new city on foot and at your own pace is great; however, in Santiago de Compostela there's another way with its own charms: the tourist train. You can catch it in the Plaza del Obradoiro, from where a tour of the historic center will take 45 minutes. You will pass by the cathedral and other areas of the old town, discovering fantastic gardens and having the chance to enjoy the best views of the city. It's really affordable, too: 6 € adults and 4 € children four to twelve years; a good choice if you travel with the whole family. Hours of operation vary by season, so it is advisable to go to the square to confirm when it's running. In high season, for example, it offers daily service.
Galician Queimada

Toads and witches…
This is an alcoholic beverage that you can only find in Galicia, made mainly with brandy and sugar, which is set on fire as part of the process. But the best part of the queimada is not its particular flavor, but how it's prepared: according to tradition, a ritual to protect from evil spirits is performed by reciting a spell. In Santiago, queimada and live music nights are held regularly, spell included, of course. Lar das Meigas, for example, organizes and entertains with traditional folk music; admission is 10 €. Also, this restaurant also offers other thematic events related to wine, literature or music. Few things you will find so typically Galician as queimada, so do not miss it; nights of magic are waiting for you.

An exceptional cultural program
If you're a fan of theater, this is perhaps the best place in Santiago to see a good performance on stage. Its programming, in Galician and Castilian, also includes musical performances of different styles, from classical to folk; plus Sunday concerts by the Municipal Band held at 12:30 pm. One of the most renowned events at the Teatro Principal are the international film cycles that take place once a month for a week, which are quite popular among its neighbors. The most famous is the 'Cineuropa' series, held in November, so it will be a great cultural choice if you visit the city during this month. The building that houses this eclectic and interesting cultural phenomenon dates from the nineteenth century, and its interior features décor reminiscent of an old-fashioned theater.

The Negreira, better known as the "Pataca," is a typical beer and tapas bar, a perfect spot to start the night with an inexpensive dinner in a place without equal. Located in the historic city center, its mission statement is clear before you set foot in the door: in the window case, there is all manner of seafood such anchovies, mussels, squid or scallops, all truly exquisite. And you know the best part? With every drink they serve you a yummy baked potato "tapa" on the house, a good custom that's disappearing in many other bars. You may run into a tourist, but through the years it has maintained a loyal local clientele, a sure sign of quality.

Welcome to one of the oldest pubs in Galicia, located in the former stables of the Somoza palace. The Modus Vivendi is another classic of the city's nightlife and a real must, as it brings together all kinds of artistic expression such as theater, photography, painting ... and especially music: here you can enjoy styles as diverse as groove, funk, Latin jazz or rock — a wide range of possibilities to please any palate. Think of it as a kind of cozy cave, an ideal place for a quiet chat with friends or to unplug from the weekly routine. It's divided into two distinct areas: the bar above, and the lower part of the pub below, which was once the stables, even retaining the ramp and watering trough, which currently serves as a table. It's not a big place, so expect it to be packed on the weekend. Strongly recommended.

This is the ideal place for a fun afternoon packed with adrenaline, whether you're traveling with your family, significant other or a group of friends. Undoubtedly, the Itineris leisure and adventure center stands out as something completely different, with options that you might not have contemplated before coming to Santiago. It's an active tourism company offering a host of exciting adventure activities such as kayaking and rafting tours, canyoning, climbing, archery, horse riding and even paintball in the woods; you get all the gear you need for a fierce battle with your enemies. Although it's located 13 miles from the city in the town of Brion, it's well worth the drive in order to live a different kind of tourist experience. The staff includes outdoor specialists, a team of trainers and health professionals.

With more than twenty years under its belt, Pepa a Loca is a classic of Santiago nightlife. This café-bar set in the old part of the city offers good music, good drinks and an unbeatable atmosphere. The variety of music is one of its hallmarks, and in fact on Wednesdays and Thursdays there are regular concerts by national and international groups. Want more peace? Then try the outdoor seating during the summer, when it becomes (even more than usual) one of the best choices for tea, coffee or even the first drink of the night. Also, if you have never tried it, they sometimes do the ritual of the queimada, the mysterious Galician drink that involves a bit of magic and witches. From outside it can be confusing, as it looks more like a home than a bar, but once you walk through the door... the spell begins!

Linking the new town with the old
This square is one of the busiest in Santiago, as it unites the new part of the city to the old historic center, a link between two worlds and the true epicenter of town. The Plaza del Toral is specially appealing in summer when the weather is good; expect cultural activities, outdoor concerts, short films, clown acts... aimed at all types of audiences. It's an ideal place to stroll at midday or in the evening and be inspired, as it definitely has a special energy matched only by the beauty of the surroundings. Don't miss the Palace of the Marquis of Bendaña, dating from the eighteenth century and known for a statue of Atlas with his globe on top of the façade.

A Baroque palace
The "pazos" are typical Galician manor houses, and this one is truly special: a Baroque palace built in the eighteenth century that marks a turning point in relation to its adjacent buildings. The Pazo de Vaamonde stands out for its beautiful arcades and the arches that support them, as well as for the great coat of arms on the façade. Inside, the glasswork on the inner door is something special, but the building is not open to visitors; just a chance to see the exterior, though, is well worth a stop. Interestingly, one of its sides is the Entrerrúas Alley, the narrowest street in Santiago.
Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

Mythical, legendary, awe-inspiring
It was in the ninth century when construction began on one of the most spectacular temples in Christendom, a cathedral through which every year thousands and thousands of people pass to pay their respects to the great patron of Spain, whose tomb is below the altar. What makes it special? For starters, its different façades executed in architectural styles such as Baroque or Romanesque, and the perfect grandeur of its interior. Perhaps the best known is the Obradoiro façade facing the square, especially when it's illuminated at night. No less striking is the twelfth-century Romanesque Portico of Glory, with its myriad details and sculptures of the evangelists and St. James himself. Its importance is such that in 1985 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Mazarelos Arch
Of the seven gates that once led into the city, only this one still stands.

Once upon a time during the Middle Ages Santiago de Compostela was a walled city, an urban fortress that protected its dwellers. There were seven gates allowing access to the city, of which only the Mazarelos Arch still stands; all the others were demolished in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Built of granite, the Romanesque arch has become a real symbol of the capital of Galicia. In fact, it is one of the most visited monuments in the historical center, a place where tourists can feel they are stepping into another bygone era. Located between Plaza de Mazarelos and Cardenal Paya, it was through this door that the precious wine from Orense entered the city.
Pazo de Fonseca Palace

History turned into a library
This sixteenth-century building commissioned by archbishop Alonso de Fonseca was originally dedicated to theological studies. Its façade is unmistakably Renaissance in style, consisting of two parts crowned by statues representing the Doctors of the Church. Its interior cloister is perhaps the most striking part of the building, a place blessed with such beauty that you simply must not miss it. It was designed by architect Gil de Hontañón in Plateresque style, and from here you can even see the towers of the cathedral. A personal recommendation? Visit around sunset, when the sunlight plays on the courtyard and slips through the windows to create a breathtaking sight you will not forget easily. At present, the Pazo de Fonseca houses the General Library and belongs to the University of Santiago.
Holy Door or Door of Forgiveness
Thousands of people pass through this door every Jubilee Year.
A unique experience
Passing through this door is a privilege that not everyone can enjoy, so feel lucky indeed if you get to experience it. The reason? It opens only on the eve of Jubilee years (December 31), i.e., when the Feast of St. James (July 25) will fall on a Sunday; then it's open during the following twelve months of that Holy Year. It's located in the rear of the Cathedral, and you'll find long queues of pilgrims and visitors arriving from all over Spain, Europe and the world, eager to cross its threshhold and embrace the Apostle St. James. However, it's not the original door, which is now inside the cathedral. The Door of Forgiveness is the one closest to the famous steps in front of the temple. It is also known as the Gate of the 27 Elders due to the figures along its sides: 24 Lords of Revelation, an apostle and two disciples.

A tribute to the great writer
Galicia has produced many renowned authors in the history of Spanish literature, and perhaps one of the most beloved is Ramón María del Valle Inclán, known for his long beard and for being one of the best representatives of the modernist style. The sculpture, unveiled in 1999, was cast in bronze by sculptor César Lombera. It pays a sincere tribute to the author right in the area where he liked to contemplate the beauty of the cathedral, and is placed on one of the benches of the Alameda Park on the Promenade of Lions; this means that people can actually sit by the author, who has thus become the most photographed character in the Galician capital. The Two Marys
Statues immortalizing the two most famous sisters in Santiago.
Long live Maruxa and Coralia!
A true symbol of the city, these two much-loved bronze statues by sculptor César Lombera in Alameda Park have quite an interesting story: "The Two Marys" were two eccentric sisters who, during the 50s and 60s, would stroll through the historic center of Santiago wearing quirky costumes and heavy makeup to flirt with the young university students who hung out in the capital (something women most certainly did not do back then). Interestingly, they always did so at lunchtime, when the street would be packed with students; this is why they were also known as "The Two O'clockers." The sisters became so well known that eventually the writer Xosé Rivadulla Corcón made a documentary about them.
Hostel of the Catholic Monarchs
Notable not only for its exterior, but also for its four inner courtyards.
An old historic inn
A definite must-see in the Galician capital, this grand and ancient hostel was commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, after a visit to the city in 1486. Built early in the sixteenth century as a hospital to treat the weary pilgrims who completed the Way of Santiago pilgrimage across northern Spain, it is located in the Plaza del Obradoiro across from the Cathedral. The best part of the building? Its magnificent Plateresque Gothic façade, behind which four courtyards form a Greek cross that will wow you with their stylized arches and air of mysticism. Today it's a 5-star part of Spain's chain of Paradors, and one of the most luxurious lodgings in town.
Pazo de Raxoi Palace
Famous for its impressive façade and its balustraded roofline.
The beautiful city hall
This is without a doubt one of the main monuments of Santiago, both in everyday importance and for its architectural and artistic nature. The Pazo de Raxoi is home to the city hall, but also houses some offices of the Government of the Xunta of Galicia and the Galician Culture Council. This French neoclassical-style palace was commissioned by then-Archbishop Bartolomé Raxoi, hence the name, and completed in 1766. It is located in the Plaza del Obradoiro, overlooking the imposing Cathedral, with an impressive façade that is particularly striking for its lower arcades and marble representation of the famous Battle of Clavijo, which took place during the Christian reconquest of the Iberian peninsula; make sure to look up, as it is crowned by a balustraded attic and a striking image of St. James; and inside, don't miss the amazing rococo-style staircase. You'll love it!
Novo Millennio Dolmen

Allegory between two eras
Inaugurated in 2000 on the occasion of Santiago being named European Capital of Culture, this peculiar sculpture is located at Music Park, opposite the city auditorium. The New Millennium Dolmen is a creation of multifaceted Galician artist Silverio Rivas, one of the best known in the region, who gives a nod to the future embodied in the new century through a work of art inspired by prehistory. Not surprisingly, in Breton 'dolmen' means 'big stone table'. This allegorical mixture of time periods is made of granite, the Galician stone par excellence, and shows simple, clear lines in three columns whose intense illumination sets up a striking contrast with the surrounding greenery. Getting here will not be difficult due to its very central location.
