A city at the foot of Mount Etna

At the foot of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, and overlooking the eastern coast of Sicily, lies Catania, one of the most important centres of Sicilian Baroque.

As you walk the historic city streets, you'll understand why UNESCO decided to protect the architecture by declaring Catania's historic centre a World Heritage Site.

Catania is a spectacular open-air stage in black and white, with countless Baroque monuments featuring two-tone facades in a striking blend of lava stone and white marble.

Along these same streets you can shop at its popular markets, plunge into crystal-clear waters lapping at beaches of sand and black volcanic rock, and enjoy dishes from a culinary tradition that will genuinely delight you.

The quintessential Baroque city

A visit to Catania's imposing cathedral, Sant'Agata, is sure to leave you in awe. This Roman Catholic church, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, sits at the heart of Catania, in Piazza del Duomo, surrounded by Baroque palaces and the famous Elephant Fountain.

You can also visit the Benedictine Monastery, one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe and a masterpiece of late Baroque architecture.

And of course, another can't-miss visit is the Biscari Palace, the city's most prominent private palace, with a beautiful, highly ornate façade.

Catania has undergone many periods of regeneration after the damage it has suffered throughout its history. These events draw a parallel between the city of Catania and the phoenix, as three major earthquakes, three massive volcanic eruptions and three great floods destroyed the city, which, like the mythical bird, rose from its ashes.

Lava beaches and blue seas

Catania boasts beaches of unusual beauty, among the finest in eastern Sicily. If you're spending several days in Catania, make sure you head to the coast.

Catania’s beaches offer a unique blend of volcanic beauty, golden sand and the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea.

La Playa, the main sand beach, is located south of the city and stretches for nearly 18 kilometres. This area features numerous "lidos" (beach clubs), restaurants and a vibrant nightlife.

The beaches of Acitrezza and Acicastello are renowned for their rocky, volcanic landscapes and are perfect for diving, snorkelling and taking in the view of the Cyclops Cliffs, spectacular rock formations.

Also worth a visit is San Giovanni Li Cuti, a small, unique beach with volcanic black sand, situated near Catania's city centre.

Climb Mount Etna

Mount Etna is a magnificent peak and active volcano located between the cities of Catania and Taormina. Standing at 3,300 metres, it attracts hundreds of hiking enthusiasts eager to put their endurance to the test during their stay in Catania.

The surrounding landscape is a marvel: stretching from the coastal strip with views over the Ionian Sea, through the countryside full of citrus orchards and vineyards, passing through dense chestnut and oak forests and reaching the more barren terrain near its summit.

Within the Etna Park Nature Reserve lies the volcano's eastern flank, with deep canyons and the ice cave, a natural cavity in which a permanent glacier has formed.

Taormina, the pearl of the Ionian Sea

If you are in Catania, a visit to Taormina is a must. It's a stunning destination that welcomes visitors all year round with its Mediterranean climate, a historic centre rich in monuments and its spectacular Hellenistic theatre, which offers breathtaking views of the turquoise sea and an unparalleled panoramic view of Etna.

And just a few minutes' drive from Taormina, you can also explore the famous Isola Bella, a tiny island nestled on the coast near the city. This islet is famous for its natural beauty and its park, which is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. It’s the perfect spot to stroll and unwind by the sea.

Syracuse, art and history spanning thousands of years

Just an hour away from Catania, you can visit another true gem: Syracuse. Famous as one of the most influential cities of the ancient world, it is celebrated for its enormous Greek and Roman archaeological heritage, its historic island centre of Ortigia and as the home of the great thinker Archimedes. An authentic treasure that combines art, ancient history and Sicilian culture.
