Drinks in the Old Town

Let's go for a beer.
The word ‘poteo’ is what the people of Bilbao call ‘going out for a few beers’. On weekend evenings, bars in several areas of the city are bursting with people snacking on tapas, drinking beer and eating dinner for many hours. The Old Town has a particularly good reputation for this, with the perfect atmosphere to ‘poteo’. All the bars in the ‘7 Streets’ area are highly recommendable, and are open until the early hours of the morning. This is where you will find places that have been running for decades, having witnessed the history of many artists of the area. Start crossing the bridge and visit the Umore Ona (‘good mood’), a small and friendly bar, famous for its music and carefree atmosphere. Wander around the city streets, but make sure to end your night at New Square. This is the hotbed of Bilbao nightlife, with several bars and covered terraces- don’t forget that it rains quite frequently in Bilbao!

If you’re looking for somewhere to go at night, we suggest visiting one of the most emblematic drinking holes in Bilbao’s bar area. The Sir Winston Churchill Bar opened its doors over 40 years ago, and is based on the image of the English politician and revolves around ‘English traditions’, such as cigar smoking. It is located on Sabino Arana Street (strategically placed between the Sacred Heart and Gran Via), and was frequented by people who wished to try one of the many cigars they had on offer. It has now adapted to a new clientele, without losing any of its original charm (it’s worth checking out the thoroughly ‘English’ décor), and is now one of the best cocktail bars in the city. This is the perfect place for great conversation over the first drink of the night. The bar is open until 2 am from Monday to Thursday, and until 3am on Friday and Saturday.
Euskalduna Jauregia Palace
This hotbed of culture is one of the most modern symbols of the city.

The Bilbao Palace of Congress and Basque Music is, along with the Guggenheim Museum, the symbol of Bilbao’s modernisation and its entry into the 21st century. The building was designed by architects Federico Soriano and Dolores Palacios and built on the Basque Dockyards, which played a key role in the industrialisation of the region, since 1900. After it closed down, they began work on a new Palace, which revolved around the idea of paying tribute to these dockyards. The building is a gigantic boat, built on top of the dockyard’s dykes. It is unique in that it has two sides: one façade faces the Bilbao estuary, simulating the docking of this large ‘vessel’, and the other looks out onto the Doña Casilda Park, displaying this large (yet respectful to its surroundings) building, made with glass, aluminium and stone. Inside, you will find all the cultural activity in the city. Its numerous halls host concerts, exhibitions, and much more. This is the annual setting for the OLBE-ABAO opera season, hosted by the Bilbao Opera.
BEC Bilbao

Come on, Bilbao Basket!
Bilbao Exhibition Centre is known by locals as the ‘BEC’, and is a response to the growing demand for cultural activities in the city. This group of halls, used for concerts, exhibitions and sporting events. Open year-round, it is constantly housing art exhibitions and often hosts concerts by international music stars. With regard to sport, obviously Athletic de Bilbao steal the show, but the BEC is where you will find the Uxue Bilbao Basketball team’s court. This is the first Basketball team of Bilbao, which plays in the ACB basketball league. Although the team has had its ups and down, the city has been dedicated to its basketball team, making every game a sporting festivity. Also, to encourage support for the team, tickets are very cheap. Check out the programme of cultural events taking place here, particularly the musical performances.
Ribera Market
The largest covered market in Europe.

The Ribera Market is a very old market, which preserves the essence and the atmosphere of the original produce and antique market. It is located at the heard of the Old Town, surrounded by Plaza Mayor, Saint Anton Church and the bridge that leads to the other bank of Bilbao, taking you through the Conde de Mirasol walkway. Historically, this is where fishermen would load and offload their produce, as well as being the site for other activities, such as processions and the running of the bulls. The present day building, known as the ‘Iron and Glass Market’ (due to the materials used on its façade), was built right at the start of the 20th century. The building has been renovated and remodelled several times, and was in ruins and about to be knocked down. The most important remodelling came in the 30s, which sought to make it into a monumental building. This was not achieved, but its luminosity and mixture of styles have made it one of the most striking buildings in the city. Today, it is the largest covered market in Europe.
Antzoki Cafe

At number 2, San Vicente Street, just metres away from the Town Hall, Antzoki Café is one of the most emblematic and charismatic places for culture and leisure in Bilbao. The building used to be a cinema, which was converted into a hall for concerts and theatre performances, as well as a restaurant, 20 years ago. Since then, it has become one of the key players in Biscayan culture and theatre. It often hosts political debates and shows by lesser known, yet still internationally recognized artists. Its charm and old cinema décor make it the ideal place to film television shows, record radio shows and put on concerts and theatrical performances. They have opened a restaurant and cafeteria on the second floor, which is open early in the morning and offers breakfast and meal menus. We recommend visiting at night, as it has the perfect atmosphere for dinner and drinks. You can enjoy the show of the day from the box. Even when there isn’t a show going on, the music and atmosphere make for a great experience for any culture lover.
Mundaka, beaches and the alternative waters

Mundaka is a small fishing village located 36 kilometres north of Bilbao, accessible by car or train. Etymologically, Mundaka comes from the Latin words ‘Munda Aqua’, meaning ‘clean water’. This is one of the most important and beautiful natural attractions on the Biscayan coast, with Bermeo to the east and Pedernales to the south. Boasting one of the most attractive beach zones in the Basque Country, it is world renowned for its surfing and hosts the annual Billabong Pro Mundaka surfing championships. The Mundaka waves are said to be some of the best ‘lefts’ in the world, so this is the perfect opportunity to try your hand at this sport. All the way along the beaches, there are several places to rent all the equipment you need for various water sports. If you are brave and love the sea, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to try all types of surfing. As this sport can be dangerous, we sincerely recommend being supervised by a professional, to get the best experience.
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city for a while, this is the best place to go.
Welcome to paradise.
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an idyllic place, synonymous with paradise. This is a small island, which divides the rock cliffs from the ones joining the sea to the beach, where fishermen dock their boats after a day of fishing. This island is in between these, and you can walk to it over a stone bridge with two arches. The atoll is crowned by a chapel, which has been here since the 10th century, and is dedicated to Saint John. Next to it, you will find a shelter and a lookout point, offering stunning views. Just a few metres away, you will see the Island of Aqueche, or ‘Island of Rabbits’. All of the rocks are part of a protected biotope, due to the enormous amount of birds that nest here. There are several tunnels and arches around the area, which, combined with the sea, make it the ideal place for divers, who come here to observe the vast array of species living here. San Juan de Gaztelugetxe is next to the coastal village of Bermeo, which you can get to by walking through one of the most beautiful areas on the Cantabrian coast.

Welcome to the Big Week of Bilbao! For 9 days, from the 15th of August, the streets of Bilbao are filled with locals for one of the most influential and popular festivals in the north of Spain. Since 1978, the festivities have begun with the ‘txupinazo’ (inaugural act) in Arriaga Theatre Square, where a popular figure in the city read’s out the proclamation of the start of the festival. These festivities are organised by both the city council and the locals, with groups of people representing each neighbourhood. In the central streets, you will find the atmospheric ‘txoznas’, where you can eat and drink for a decent price, both during the day and at night. The live music is one of the festival’s main attractions. Several squares in the city, particularly in the Old Town, host concerts and theatrical performances both day and night. Unamuno Square and New Square are the places to be, as the area around the Old Pharmacy is where large, free concerts are held every year. Generally, each day is dedicated to a different style of music.

The oldest streets in Bilbao.
Somera, Artecalle, Tendería, Belosticalle, Carnicería Vieja, Barrencalle, Barrencalle Barrena and La Ronda are the seven streets that make up the nucleus of the Old Town. Commonly referred to as the ‘seven streets’, around which the city was born, before hopping over to the other side of the water on the Old Bridge. In addition to being the first nucleus of the town of Bilbao, the pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela are said to have rested at St. James’ (Patron Saint of the city) Cathedral. Today, the seven streets form the hub of Bilbao activity. These important streets are a mixture of shopping areas, clothing and accessory shops, including the famous La Palma shoe shop (3 Correo Street), and bars and terraces in the pedestrian area. You can also buy ‘santiaguitos’ sweets here, which originate here, but are not exclusive to this area. These are marshmallow sweets, which are traditionally bought and blessed on the day of Saint Blas, as they are thought have healing qualities and soothe throat ache. You can also buy artisanal Bilbao turron (nougat) here, which is another of the richest traditional products you can find.
Jota+Ge
Clothing independent and distinguished women.
A great union.
Jota+Ge is a merging of two Basque designers, namely Juana Ruíz and Garbiñe y Urdampilleta, who have created a feminine fashion line. These clothes reflect their ideas of an independent and distinguished woman. After having worked separately for several years, they decided to begin this new venture in 1985. It is now one of the most important, internationally acclaimed fashion houses in the country. Although you can find their clothes in several luxury shops, they have three shops of their own. One is in Barakaldo (Megapark Shopping Centre), in the outskirts of Bilbao, which you can get to by bus, metro or train in just a few minutes. The other shops are in Pamplona and France. Both designers have maintained a close relationship with the city of Bilbao, and have helped to internationalise the city’s name. They were also involved in the Guggenheim’s 15th anniversary campaign. During the Holy week, they participate in fashion days in Bilbao, where you can also find highly discounted clothing. You can find these unique collections in many shops on Gran Via, as well as in the Old Town.
Ángela Arregui
She is with every postman in the country.
"The cat with the warm look".
Although you can still find her clothes in certain shops, Angela Arregui’s brand and shops has to close down after the creator’s death in 2006. However, her reputation as the most relevant figure in the fashion world to be born in Bilbao lives on. Arregui, who died at only 67 years old, halfway through her career, was known as ‘the cat with the warm look’, with her red highlights, which she had her entire life. Although she was born in Bilbao and lived here all her life, she never claimed to have a Basque ‘style’. However, she always brought the city with her to catwalks all over the world, including Madrid, Tokyo and New York. Arregui challenged herself with new and difficult projects, as she dreamt of being able to clothe every type of woman, regardless of their age, as long as they felt youthful. She designed the uniforms for the Basque police force and all the postmen in Spain. U fortunately, her own shop was closed down in 2009, due to the economic crisis.
Miriam Ocáriz and Elcano street
Communication and expression through its creations.
Pop-Fashion.
Miriam Ocáriz is the more relaxing side of fashion, amid the big designers in Bilbao and the Basque Country. In 1990, she launched the brand Monge-Ocariz with a partner, where she sold her designs. In 1996, she displayed her first collection at Barcelona Fashion Week, and was awarded the L’Oreal Paris prize in 2002 for best young designer at Madrid Fashion Week. She is known as the ‘pop’ designer of Bilbao, as her designs are inspired by pop trends, everyday elements and personal experiences. Just as she started out, she still uses the technique of serigraphy to print her clothing, which gives it a touch of exclusivity. The designer defined herself as a person who tries to use clothing as a means of communication, just like other people would use words. Her clothes are not aimed at a specific consumer, as her collections combine a mixture of styles, making every piece unique. You can find one of her shops in the middle of Elcano Street, which also sells an array of unique accessories.

L'enfant terrible of Basque fashion.
The brand’s name comes from its founder, Juanjo Fiz from Eibar in Guipuzcoa. Born in 1976, he settled in Bilbao and spent his youth as a student in the Biscayan capital. He was a student of Miriam Ocariz and classmate to the likes of Adolfo Dominguez. From very early on, his collections featured on the catwalks of the Barcelona and Madrid Fashion Weeks. He has become an icon in both the national and international fashion world. His most important point was in 1997, when he created his own brand, Ion Fiz, which has become increasingly popular. The designer draws his inspiration from naïve art, Modernist architecture and Bauhaus, as well as artisanal haute couture tailoring. He now has collections for men and women, and created a line of clothing commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Guggenheim. In 2003, after Madrid Fashion Week, the specialised pressed deemed him the ‘enfant terrible’, where he found his niche in the most important fashion markets. Even if you have no intention of buying anything, his shop at 38 Iparaguirre Street is worth a visit.
Ailanto Brothers

Twins strike twice.
Born in Bilbao in 1968, twin brothers Iñaki and Aitor Muñoz are responsible for the enormous boom in Bilbao fashion several years ago. They have made the city a reference point for fashion. Both brothers created the brand Ailanto in 1992, while they were studying Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona. They now have two shops (in Barcelona and Madrid), and are regulars at Madrid Fashion Week and other prestigious international catwalks, always receiving critical acclaim. Although they never opened a shop in Bilbao, you can find some of their pieces in several shops, such as Chambon 21, at 15 Alameda Mazarredo Street. The twins have always waved a flag for Bilbao, as they have a close relationship with the city and have collaborated on several different initiatives and campaigns, including the design of the Guggenheim’s 15th anniversary commemorative shirts, which were extremely popular.

Lulu Martines is a shop at number 8, Licenciado Street, just two streets away from Gran Via. Opened in 1999, it has become a symbol of Bilbao’s jewellery, accessories and gifts. The key to its success lies in its exclusivity. Here you will find several different models, but only ever two of each piece. This shop has received lots of positive feedback, particularly from its followers in specialised press and fashion bloggers, who always seem to mention the accessories from this shop. It has also become greatly popular, due to its catalogue, in which you can find LolitasBCN brooches and Raquel Moreno’s enamel jewellery, all very sought-after items. This is the perfect place to find exclusive gifts with a personal touch.

Miguel Palacio is one of the names that promote the fashion world in the Basque Country, and the importance of its image in international fashion has made an impression on the city. Born in Bilbao in 1962, the designer created the clothing brand Palacio-Lemoniez, together with Fernando Lemoniez, in 1991. They went on to win prizes, including the ‘T de Telva’ twice. They separated in 1995, to begin their own fashion lines. Miguel Palacio dedicated himself to haute couture, focusing on modern, urban women. He prepared his line in Paris for several years, until 2001, when he bust back onto the catwalk with his own homonymous brand, Miguel Palacio. From then on, he has featured on all the main catwalks and has received very positive feedback from Madrid Fashion Week, as many women feel that they can identify with his clothing. You can find different collections by the Bilbao designer in many fashion shops on Gran Via. You will also see collaboration the brand has made with initiatives around the city.
Loreak Mendian
First deemed a 'snobbish' brand, it has won over the Basque youth, and is now doing the same with youth all over Europe.
Power to the daisy.
Loreak Mendian is the brand of clothing known for its daisy prints, and means ‘mountain of flowers’. In just a few years, it has found itself a niche in the youth sports clothing market, not just in Spain, but internationally. Loreak Mendian sells its clothing in many countries, including France, Portugal, Japan and Australia. The brand mainly manufactures surf clothing, which can often be seen at international championships. This is one of the most representative icons of the Basque Country. Although its creators were from San Sebastian, it rapidly became extremely popular with the youth all over the Basque Country. Deemed a brand with slight ‘snobbish’ connotations, it has managed to win over the younger crowd. In Bilbao, there are two exclusive shops that you can visit, at 1 Nueva Street and 26 Maximo Aguirre Street.
Gran Via - Indautxu

A Basque avenue, par excellence.
Gran Via is the centre of commercial activity in Bilbao, and one of the most important streets in the Basque Country. Lining the street, you will find the main banks and finance companies of the provinces and, just like any other large city, there is constant coming and going. The economy is on the move here. This is also the place for shopping. The advantage Bilbao has over other large cities is that it is easily covered on foot. It boasts an array of clothing shops for young people and luxury outfitters, as well as places to buy all kinds of accessories and souvenirs of the city. These are mixed in with terraces, bars and restaurants, ideal for grabbing a bite to eat while you shop. The parallel roads leading towards the San Mames Stadium, going up towards Autonomia Street through Iparaguirre, make up the Indautxu neighbourhood. This is the luxury shopping district, where you will find brand-name clothing and many other products. This is the other side to the Old Town. You are, however, only ten minutes away from the rest of the shops.

The Old Town is the zone of the seven streets, from St. James’ Cathedral to the New Square. This is a large area of shops, open all day. One of its main appeals is the eclectic mixture of shops, from large brand-name clothing to local clothing shops, bakeries and many, many bars. Throughout the day, the Old Town sees hustle and bustle of locals and tourists, going up and down its streets. The most ‘alternative’ clothing shops are next door to one another, including La Palma shoe shop, which is a very well known shoe shop. In addition to the shops, pop-up stalls selling beads and accessories are set up on weekends (depending on the weather and time of year), where you can find souvenirs of Bilbao.
Home of Miguel de Unamuno
For lovers of classical Spanish literature.
Number 16, Ronda Street.
Miguel de Unamuno, one of the most renowned writers of the ’98 Generation, is also one of the main symbols of Bilbao. It is hard to visit this city without running into numerous references to this author. He strongly defended his birthplace throughout his works. In return, the city has paid him several tributes, such as the Unamuno Square, at the heart of the city. What few people know is that just 100 metres from the square, at number 16 Ronda Street, you will find the house he was born in a lived in as a young writer. A commemorative plaque is found on the façade of the building, which he went back to after the death of Franco in 1975. He received the title of ‘illustrious person of Bilbao’, granted to him in the Second Republic, during the rapture of the end to the dictatorship. Lovers of literature can visit the bookshop next door, where the author used to spend his time and which is still open today. The writer is celebrated every 29th of September.
Hanging Bridge

Guilty of revolutionising Bilbao's industry.
Bilbao’s Hanging Bridge, or Biscayan Bridge, is one of the most representative legacies left behind by Bilbao’s industrial revolution. Alberto Palacio Elissaque, who also designed the Retiro Palace in Madrid, oversaw this project. Inaugurated in 1893, it sought to connect both banks of the estuary, allowing ship traffic to pass, without interrupting the city merchants’ work. The designer developed an innovative project, nicknamed ‘Palace transporter birdge’, which used a giant metal structure to transport passengers from the bank of Getxo to Portugalete, without obstructing the trajectories of the water vessels. The Biscay Bridge was the first transporter bridge in the world to be elevated on a metallic structure. During the Civil War, the Northern Army stopped the National Army from reaching Portugalete by cutting off all connections and knocking down the bridge in 1937. However, in 1941, work began to restore the bridge, which was fully functioning again some months later. This was one of the main arteries of business and economy in Biscay.
Bermeo

The town of Bermeo is the definition of a fishing village. This is the most populated urban area in the Urdaibai zone, a group of villages known for its rowing sports. Since it became a town, Bermeo has revelled in its status as ‘Head of Biscay’, and, despite its step backward in 1602, still maintains the image of the first fishing port of the whole Biscayan coast. It is full of history and local literature, dating back to 1050 and revolving around the San Juan Chapel on the island of Gaztelugetxe. This is where a fishing community started to settle permanently, in order to be able to go fishing on a daily basis. Today, ten centuries later, fishing is still the main source of income for the island of Bermeo. For several years, it has become one of the most appealing tourist destinations in Biscay. Its almost 3 kilometres of beach make it the ideal place for regattas in the summer months, and it also offers many beautiful and isolated coves, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the Cantabrian Sea.
Sopelana and extreme sports

Sopelana is found on the closest coast to Getxo, bordered in the east by Plentzia. The beautiful beach and village of Sopelana make for one of the most impressive places along the Biscayan coast. In this zone, the Cantabrian Sea violently beats the cliffs, but respects the gulf formed by the beach, when there is no north wind. At this time, particularly during the summer months, the beach is transformed into one of the most popular surfing spots. This area is idea for many types of water and extreme sports. For several years, the surrounding mountains have been used to practice skydiving, paragliding and freefalling from a plane. Even if you’re not looking for this kind of rush, the Sopelana beach is surrounded by totally green cliffs, which are worth a visit. You can cross the beaches by foot on several different routes. You can then come back and observe the beach from strategically placed lookout points. There is on-site parking and several terraces within walking distance of the beach, where you can sit and enjoy the sea view.
Artxanda
Don't forget to take a trip on the funicular and see the city from a different perspective.
A bird's eye view of Bilbao.
Artxanda is one of the two small mountains that ‘watch over’ the city, and one of the most famous and mystical places in Bilbao. The other is Mount Pagasarri. These two mountains marked the border of the original city. Artxanda is now one of the large green spaces used for sports and offers a feel for the history of the town. One of its main attractions is the funicular, which connects Artxanda to the centre of Bilbao. Built in 1915, it is still one of the most fun and fastest ways to get to its peak. You can take the funicular next to the Town Hall, and observe the city from a completely different perspective. Once you have arrived at the peak, make sure to thoroughly observe the city. Now you will understand why they call it ‘el botxo’ (the pit). Other cultural attractions include the set of tunnels, which now connect Bilbao to the Sondica area. This project was started by Indalecio Prieto in the Second Republic, but was not finished until 1995. It provided numerous hiding places during the Civil War and was the scene of several battles.
Doña Casilda Park

The Doña Casilda Park, or Casilda Iturrizar Park, is an enormous green space in the middle of the urban nucleus. It is located in the Abando district, next to that of Indauchu, and is an enormous park built on land handed over in 1907 by Casilda Iturrizar, a wealthy landowner in the city. This provided Bilbao with the only green space in the heart of the industrial zone, up until the city’s remodelling in recent years. This vast, English-style Park is home to several attractions. At the centre is a lake, commonly known as the ‘Duck pond’, which is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Concerts and theatrical performances are often held here in the Pergola area. On the other side is the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts, built in the 1940s. During the summer months, many shows are held here. The famous Light and Water Show is held at the central fountain, next to the Tonetti monument. Spectators position themselves with the Sheraton in the background, to get the best views of the show.
Urdaibai Reserve
A protected space, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Spectacular landscapes.
Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1984, the Urdaibai Reserve is one of the most spectacular places you can visit. These wetlands span over 220 square kilometres and occupy the whole length of the Oka river mouth, between the towns of Mundaka and Guernika. The predominant landscape is a spectacular mixture of sea, sand and forest, where variety and meeting points for migratory birds have turned it into a protected area. Along the mountain trails, you will find several lookout points, where you can stop and contemplate the landscape. You might also catch a glimpse of the area’s flora and fauna, including foxes, wild boars, deer, lynxes and mountain cats. The Oma forest and Santimamine Cave are two of the most popular attractions. The sea area is a great place to practice canoeing and kayaking, and you can rent all the necessary equipment on-site. This is the perfect way to discover marine wildlife, such as eels, trout and mullet, depending on where you are on the river.

Born from a large project of green spaces in Bilbao, since its remodelling in the 90s, the ‘Gran Recorrido Bilbao’ (Bilbao Grand Tour), commonly known as the ‘GR Bilbao’, is one of the main attractions for lovers of sport and fresh air. This is a 74-kilometre ring around the city of Bilbao, which takes you through al these green spaces. Of course, covering all 74 kilometres on foot or bicycle would be a little excessive, so it is more common to devise different, more feasible routes, in order to take in the surrounding mountains and see the city from a different point of view. The route is dotted with lookout points, rest areas, and entrances and exits to the urban centres, making it suitable for any visitor. There are ten possible stretches, which allow you to explore the city. We recommend the routes between Eliptica Square and Via Vieja de Lezama, Begona Basilica and Atxeta Path, and Europe Park and Santa Marina. The most popular mode of transport is a bicycle, which you can rent at several stops on the routes.

The starting point of the birth and development of the city, Bilbao estuary unites the Nervion and Ibaizabal rivers, and is the line that divides Bilbao into two parts. Despite having been exploited for many years, with very little control, the city of Bilbao has recognised its importance of this body of water just over ten years ago. It is now one of the city’s largest green spaces. The arrival of the Guggenheim Museum brought other large projects to the area. Parks were built around the estuary and it is now one of the most popular places for those who play sports and want to wind down after a hard day’s work. This route is also a great way of getting one’s bearings and learning more about the most emblematic places in the city. The neighbourhood of Indauchu y Abando is on one side, and the magnificent panoramic vie of the Guggenheim Museum is on the opposite bank. Further in the distance, is the Basque Palace and the Zubiarte shopping centre. Once you get to the estuary, you will find the areas of Sestao and Portugalete, two maritime enclaves that played a key role in the city’s history.

We present you with two typical recipes from Bilbao that you will have to try throughout your stay. First of all, the marmitako, named after the container in which it is cooked, a metal or ceramic kettle. Inside, a stew of potatoes with onions and peppers are simmering together with slices of northern tuna. The origin of the recipe is in the fishermen of the Cantabrian coast who jumped into the sea with the prepared pot and then poured some pieces of the fish they had obtained. Secondly, pil pil cod is a recipe that mixes cod, olive oil, garlic and chillies and is called “pil pil” in reference to the sound that the cutlery makes when mixing the ingredients. It is prepared in a pot or clay pot, similar to the previous one, and over low heat. Despite originally being a very strong and spicy dish, currently, most establishments where they are served do so in a milder way, suitable for all palates. You can try any of the two recipes in any of the restaurants and bars in the center or in Casco Viejo.
Guggenheim Bistro (eat at the museum)

This is an alternative way to have breakfast, lunch or dinner after a visit to the Guggenheim Museum. This is the Bilbao Guggenheim Bistro Restaurant. Recently opened, it is becoming an important meeting point between Bilbao leisure and gastronomy. It is a mixture of two atmospheres: a cafeteria, which is open early in the morning, and a spectacular terrace, with views of the Bilbao estuary and the enormous parks that surround the building. This is an informal place, offering highly refined, top-quality gastronomy. From late morning onwards, a variety of pintxos are on offer, either for breakfast or a snack. Their fish dishes, particularly the hake, are a real delicacy. The atmosphere they have created is so enjoyable that, due to demand, the terrace is open after 1 in the morning, and the Bistro becomes a regular hangout for youths. Have your first drink of the evening in a peaceful, stylish area, with stunning views, before heading off to join the crowds in the city centre.

Located at 7 Barrainkua Street, in the new area of Bilbao, Mami Lou Cupcake is a fashionable bakery. Its décor is a mixture of 60s bakery and an Alice in Wonderland fairytale world. Although it caters to all members of the public, it is a particularly great place for children, who come here for birthday cakes and a breakfast of fairy cakes and chocolate cookies. Groups of colleagues come here to combine work meetings with an afternoon of coffee and desserts, just like Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City. Inside, you will find an enormous variety of cakes and pastries of every flavour and colour you could possibly imagine. Their coffee is also excellent. This is undoubtedly one of the most charming places in the city. It is becoming a tradition to take back a box of their desserts as a souvenir of Bilbao.

The Yandiola Restaurant is in the Bilbao Corn Exchange building, and offers a mixture of traditional gastronomy and avant-garde cuisine. Based on traditional Basque products, such as meat and fish, the signature dishes here always have a little twist of something different. Although its main restaurant is the Yandiola, there are several other options in this building. Hola Bar is a café-lounge, perfect for a snack, La Florinda offers a take-out service and La Terraza del Yandiola, which is known as the ‘sky of Bilbao’, boasts spectacular views of Bilbao and a relaxed atmosphere from early evening to the early hours of the morning.

Perro Street, at the heart of the Old Town, is one of the most traditional places for tapas and drinking. There is practically one bar every step you take. Among the multitude of establishments, which stay open for almost 24 hours a day, we recommend Rio-Oja Restaurant, a simple little local restaurant at number 4. Specialising in tapas and traditional Basque food, you can either order tapas or main dishes. It is famous for the enormous casserole dishes (‘cazuelitas’), used to cook the dishes of the day, which are displayed along the main bar. This allows you to see what you’re going to eat, what it looks like and how it’s being prepared. If you’re looking for a good chitchat, the restaurant staff will gladly recount the history of the restaurant and the recipes they use.

This is the ideal combination of an exquisite menu and an impressive setting. Located next to the New Basque Palace, in the new zone of Bilbao, it is accessed by exterior, transparent lifts on either side of the building. Its location allows guests to dine next to one of the most exceptional views of the city. This restaurant has been a city staple for 12 years, has a Michelin star and serves exquisite dishes, which are prime examples of traditional Basque gastronomy. Its meat and hake, prepared in a Biscayan style, are outstanding. The best way to try it all, is to get its sampling menu, particularly if you are with several people.
Bilbao turron (nougat)

A surprising nougat tradition.
Did you know that Bilbao’s ‘turron’ (nougat) tradition dates back over 150 years? Not many people know this, but the tradition of turron-making is deeply rooted in the city. There are several important manufacturers, such as the Ivanez and Zuricalday Turron Shops, which have been in business for over a century, specialising in the preparation and creation of turron. Despite being a seasonal product (generally only made around Christmas), you can find it throughout the year. In fact, you may also see it as a dessert option in restaurants, particularly in the Old Town, where most of it is made. If you can, try the Soconusco, which comes from the Xoconochco region in Mexico, which is said to have some of the best cacao in the world, brought to Bilbao by Inigo de Urruta. This kind was made popular by Martina de Zuricalday (her bakery in the Getxo district is still open today), but has actually become one of Bilbao’s main sweet products.

Victor Restaurant, in the middle of New Square, is the ideal place to sample typical Basque dishes. Some say that this restaurant serves the best fish in the city. Open since 1940, it has become an institution. This is a friendly and welcoming place, with around twenty tables. If the weather’s good, they also have a lovely, atmospheric terrace. If you can, we recommend stopping here for your city centre dining experience, where you can enjoy a good ‘marmitako’. This is a typical, native dish, consisting of potato stew with tuna (white or northern), onion, peppers and tomato. The recipe originates from the fishermen of the Cantabrian Sea. The Basque, Cantabrian and Asturian fishermen would go out to sea for several consecutive days, and would bring pots of cooked potatoes and garnishes, to which they would add the fish that they just caught. Generally, the dish is made with tuna, as this is the most popular dish. However, you can find all sorts of varieties, including marmitako with calamari.
Pintxos and Tapas
Going for tapas is a must in Bilbao. The seven streets area is the best for this.
Three-bite pintxos.
One of the first lessons you must learn in Bilbao is ‘going for pintxos or tapas’. The tradition is similar in numerous Spanish cities, such as Granada, Salamanca and Madrid. But the ‘tapas’ from the Basque Country have a great reputation, gained from hard work and experimentation. You are bound to love them. Going for tapas in the Old Town is one of the best ways to get to know the old area of Bilbao, commonly referred to as the ‘seven streets zone’. We recommend starting your gastronomic itinerary at the bars surrounding St. James’ Cathedral, where you can easily lose track of time. This area is a mixture of terraces, bars and shops, all with a beautiful stone backdrop. End your route in the area around Unamuno Square and New Square, which are bursting with life both day and night. We recommend sampling the seafood specialities, such as the beloved dish of ‘rabas’ (calamari), and remember the saying: “one pintxo should be eaten in only three bites”.
Bilbao Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art
This has been home to 2,000 paintings and sculptures, ornaments and metalwork since the 11th century.
Precious metal treasures.
The aim of this museum was to save and divulge the cultural heritage of the Diocese of Bilbao. Running since 1961, it used to be located on the lower floor of the Diocese of Bilbao. This was, however, too small and restricted a space. Unhappy with it, the Diocese of Bilbao declared its intentions of opening its doors to locals, and began searching for a more appropriate space. They used the Encarnacion Dominican Convent in the Atxurri district in the outskirts of the city, which was built in around 1515 to indicate the path to Castile. This building was forgotten about and, just when they were about to demolish it, they restored it to house the Museum of the Diocese in 1991. Its collection of over 2,000 exhibits date back to the 11th century, all the way to the present day. The continuous exhibition is divided into three parts: sculptures and paintings, ornaments, and metalwork. The metalwork collection is one of the most prestigious in Europe, and boasts exhibits from the workshop of Lucas Jordan.
Bilbao Bullfighting Museum
This is the only black sand bullring in the whole of Spain, and it's got a museum!
A homage to Vista Alegre.
If you were a fan of bullfighting, you would know that the Vista Alegre Bullring is one of the main arenas of Spain. It has seen all the top names in its field throughout the ages. After a fire destroyed the old arena, the new Vista Alegra arena was built and has been running since 1962. There are 14,781 seats inside, so that many a spectator can enjoy the only Spanish arena with black sand. In 1995, the Bullfighting Museum was inaugurated inside vista Alegre, which was very important for fans of the sport, as its permanent exhibition takes you on an educational journey through eight of the most important bullfighting eras: the bullfighting Enlightenment, romanticism, bullfighters from the ‘Guerrita’ period, the ‘Silver Age’ of the Second Republic, the Manolete period, the 50s and the ‘El Cordobes’ period. The museum also displays various Goya works, heads of famous bulls, costumes of old maestros, such as the two donated by Antonio Ordonez, and a large photo and text gallery. Generally, the ‘Semana Grande’ festival brings generous donations to the museum from bullfighters.

The Love Story Museum.
This museum was born out of love. In 1990, painter Benedicto Martinez Angulo promised his wife the gift of a museum to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. Seven years later, that day came in 1997, coinciding with their 25-year wedding anniversary. The painter came to Esperanza, his wife, with the keys to the art gallery. The museum boasts a wonderful collection of the painter’s works, donations made by his friends and colleagues and contributions from official organisations who reinterpret his works. Also, thanks to Esperanza’s wishes, entry is free and it is open to the public 365 days a year. The family offers a thought-provoking journey through art and culture, one of the main protagonists being Benedicto himself, who has achieved international acclaim. It is located at 55 Ipalaguirre Street, close to the Bilbao Corn Exchange.
Bilbao Museum of Reproductions
Controversial and versatile, this museum has everything.
The doubles of great works of art.
Despite the controversy of exhibiting reproductions of works of art, the city council decided to approve of this museum’s construction in 1928. Sicne then, in three different locations, the city has offered the opportunity to see ‘copies’ of the most famous works of art from around the world, particularly those from Ancient Greek times and the Italian Renaissance. Many of these are displayed in large museums, such as the Louvre, the Berlin Museum and the British Museum. The Museum of Reproductions has been in its current location since 1957, and has since then served as a multidisciplinary building, where all reproduction collections are used for students studying Fine Arts at the University of Bilbao. It also houses themed temporary exhibitions of other reproduction collections, and has a space dedicated to a variety of cultural initiatives. We recommend having a look at the week’s activities, as their concert programme is very interesting. You can visit for free on Thursdays, so take advantage of that if you can.

A tour through the Bilbao 'Cathedral'.
If you’re a football fan, we recommend that you not only watch a match at ‘the Cathedral’, but also visit the Athletic Museum. It is also located in the San Mames Stadium, and the entrace is at doors 26 and 27 in the main stand. It is important to know that Athletic Club Bilbao is one of the most history-drenched clubs in Spanish football. Founded in 1898, this team has been the only team to play in all first-division seans, along with Real Madrid and F.C. Barcelona. Its 21 ‘Copero’ titles, 8 ‘Liga’ cups and 1 ‘Supercopa’, kits from throughout the ages (including the ‘blanquiazul’ (white and blue) of 1903), cards, photographs and founding statue are all displayed here. This is a journey through the history of Spanish football, from the point of view of one of its key players, dressed in red and white. It is also a dedication to great historical players, from Pichichi to Julen Guerrero. Only recently have they opened the director’s box, the pressroom, the team’s changing rooms and the bench to the public. This is one of the few opportunities to see everything, including the pitch itself. Goal!
Bilbao River Maritime Museum

Bilbao also loves the sea.
The sea is obviously part of the city of Bilbao’s identity. The origins of the city lie in the estuary, around which it was built. The founders of the Biscayan capital were fishermen who went to work from the port and came in towards the Old Bridge with their boats, in order to sell the day’s catch at a primitive market next to the Saint Anton Church. In memory of this tradition, the Bilbao Maritime River Museum was opened in 2003. It is located at the old Basque dockyard, and despite its only very recent inauguration, exhibits a large collection of the city’s maritime heritage. The Town Hall donated the ‘Grua Carola’, a crane built in the Erandio workshops, which was the most powerful one in Spain at the time. It is now one of the main attractions and hosts exhibitions. The museum has preserved the dykes from the old dockyard, which you can also visit. One area is used for the free exhibition of boats and maritime materials, where owners proudly show off their vessels on a regular basis.
The Old Municipal Corn Exchange
The columns supporting the building are worth a visit alone. There are 43 of them and each one is different.
Beautiful both inside and out.
If you arrive here on foot, it’s worth taking a few steps back and observing the building from one of the benches around it. The entrance to the complex is on Arriquibar Square. The building is over 100 years old and was built between 1905 and 1909 by Ricardo Bastida. This was one of the bids to modernise the city, which saw great success. Firstly, they were able to erect an enormous building, which occupies an entire block in the Ensanche district (this was the new zone of Bilbao at the time). Secondly, their techniques were innovative, and it was the first building in the community to be built on reinforced concrete. This wine shop rapidly became an icon of the city. In 2000, under the supervision of architect Philippe Starck, it was transformed into a cultural and sports activity centre. It is worth going inside to count the 43 columns that support the building, as each one is unique. Made of marble, wood, brick, glazed terracotta, steel and Lecce stone, each column symbolises a different historical and cultural period. A large sun presides over and illuminates the building. If the weather’s nice, take in the views from the top floor terrace.
Municipal Museum of Fine Arts
Enjoy works by el Greco, Goya, Zurbaran, Chillida and Zuloaga.
A touch of green between the Old Pharmacy and Moyua Square.
Between the Old Pharmacy area and Moyua Square, you will find the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts, another of the city’s large green spaces. The building and its gardens a worth a visit, even just on the outside. This museum holds an important part if Bilbao history, and is the result of a fusion between the Museum of Fine arts (founded in 1908, but only opened to the public in 1914) and the Museum of Modern Art (running since 1924). After the Civil War, Bilbao was looking to modernise, become renowned for its industrialisation and development, while preserving the culture and idiosyncrasies of the Basque society. Thus, in the years that followed the Civil War, it was decided that a building would be constructed to combine the collections of both former museums, which was achieved in 1945. The building became too small and was extended in the 60s. You may not have time to see all 8,000 exhibits, but you should see El Greco’s ‘Ascension’, works by Zurbaran and Goya, and the most important works in Basque culture, by Chillida and Zuloaga.
Basque Museum

A cultural stroll through Bilbao.
Located on Unamuno Square, the Bilbao Basque Museum is in the old San Andres School. This building was the first founded by the order of the Jesuits in the city, before they were expulsed in 1767. The building, with its church and school, suffered many historical vicissitudes between its construction and the expropriation ordered by Carlos III, who expulsed the Jesuits from the realm. Finally, the Town hall handed over the cloister in 1914, to house the Biscayan Museum of Archaeology. This was the starting point for today’s Basque Museum. The number of collections gradually started to increase. Today, each floor is dedicated to a different discipline, but all offer a wonderful journey through the region’s history. The museums houses a range of displays, from carvings dating back to various prehistoric periods and archaeological bastions which bore witness to the first communities in the Basque territory, to written testimonies and weapons used in the Carlist Wars. The Basque Museum therefore shows the origins of this society, and the most significant aspects of its identity and traits. One of the most visited collections is the new permanent exhibition about the Basque ‘pelota’ ball game.
Bilbao Guggenheim Museum
Bilbao should definitely be thankful for this museum, as it has turned the city into a must-visit tourist destination.
A futuristic, rule-breaking Bilbao.
The Guggenheim Museum chronologically divides Bilbao. It marks a point where time is referred to as before or after its construction. This project not only led to the construction of this original, silver building, but it also brought about a whole restructuring of the city. Located next to La Salve Bridge (now the Princes of Spain Bridge) and the Bilbao River, it encouraged the remodelling of the zone around it, to make it what it is today. This is possibly the nicest and most enjoyable green space in the city, perfect for wandering around or playing sports. Despite the huge controversy surrounding it when it was first built, the museum has had a large impact on the city, transforming it from a port and business town into a must-see tourist destination in the north of Spain. Every year, over one million visitors pass through the gates of the museum. Designed by Canadian architect Frank Gehry, this innovative structure is based on curves, titanium sheets and mirrors. Dedicated to contemporary art exhibitions, the building itself is a work of art. Even though it isn’t cheap, the museum’s own restaurant is a great place to eat.
Saint Mames Stadium
This is one of the top three Spanish stadiums, along with Camp Nou and Santiago Bernabeu.
The real Bilbao 'Cathedral'.
“Where are you going? – San Mames. – To the Church? – No, to the Cathedral”. This is an old saying in Bilbao. The ‘Cathedral’ is the only stadium to have been part of every first-division Spanish Liga event, which is why it oozes with history. It was inaugurated in 1913, with a match between Athletic Club Bilbao and Racing Irun. Built on top of the old San Mames asylum, it takes its name from a martyr who was attacked and devoured by lions, which is why they call the players ‘lions’. Along with Camp Nou of F.C. Barcelona and Santiago Bernabeu of Real Madrid, this stadium has the most Spanish football history and it is undoubtedly the stadium with the most myths. Pichichi was the first player to score a goal in this stadium and the trophy for highest number of goals scored in the league is named after him. Telmo Zarra scored 333 goals and Jose Angel Iribar played 614 matches with the club. Even if you’re not the greatest football fan, the atmosphere on a match day is an incredible experience, as long as you’re supporting the local team and its ‘cubs’. If you’re going to take a photo, get one with the archway in the background.
Sacred Heart of Jesus
In its time, it caused rifts between locals. Today, it watches over football players and symbolises the city.
The monument of discord.
Keeping watch over Gran Via and the San Mames Stadium is the Bilbao Sacred Heart of Jesus Monument. This monument was initially a highly controversial issue in the city. It was built thanks to a donation of 50,000 Pesetas by an anonymous member of the Bilbao Prayer Apostolate, on the condition that it was to be built on municipal territory. It is important to remember that at this time, Bilbao was divided into the more conservative aristocracy, who were closer to the Church, and the working class, who were against it. Due to this, the city saw hard times, which turned particularly violent a few years later, with the arrival of the Republic in 1931. Therefore, its inauguration on the 26th of June 1927 brought many people to the streets, some excited about the monument, and the majority protesting against it. Adding fuel to the fire was the fact that the architect was Lorenzo Coullat, a man from Seville who lived in Madrid. Despite being one of the most famous sculptors of the time, people were against him because he wasn’t from the city. The Town Hall archives still hold records of its approval meeting, which almost ended up in a fistfight. Today, it is one of the symbols of the city.
Civil Government Headquarters

At the end of Gran Via, on the opposite side to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the road opens up into a large roundabout. Stop here and relax. This is Moyua Square. Enjoy sitting on one of the benches and observing the impressive building in front of you. It is thought that this building, which has been the headquarters of the Civil Government since 1943, was the care centre, general headquarters of the Red Army and military hospital during the Civil War and thereafter. Despite being the headquarters of the Civil Government, Chavarri Palace is also known for its name. The Chavarri family was one of the most important families in Bilbao. In 1888, Victor Chavarri make a large part of Bilbao bourgeoisie move to the El Ensanche district, which significantly boosted the growth of the city. He was also a key player in Bilbao’s industrialisation. This building was home to Victor and his brother, Benigno, but it was sold to the Basque government in 1939. The interior has still preserved all its original Flemish style décor. You must book your visit in advance, to discover the beauty of these five floors and 3000 square metres.
Saint Anton Bridge
The tragic story behind Saint Anton Bridge, is that it fell, or "committed suicide", just before it was about to be demolished.
The gateway to the city.
Saint Anton Bridge is the gateway to Bilbao’s Old Town. It was actually here before the city we know today. Its exact date of construction is unknown, but it is said to be before 1300, the year that Diego Lopez founded the city of Bilbao. It is thought that the city was built around this bridge, as it was the only connecting point between the two riverbanks for many years. This brought about a huge settlement of fishermen and merchants to this river area. Locals protested the creation of newer bridges, which led to violent confrontations over the new works. After suffering through the Siege, the Carlist Wars and other vicissitudes, the bridge was left in ruins and the new one was built just metres away. Strangely enough, on the day it was supposed to be demolished in 1880 (even though many were against demolishing the symbol of their city), the bridge fell down itself, trapping all the workers. This is why people of Bilbao say that the “old Saint Anton Bridge committed suicide”.

The Callao of Bilbao.
Do you hear the hubbub? This is the nucleus of the Old Town and the start of what they call ‘7 streets’. Unamuno Square, dedicated to one of the key players in the ’98 literary generation (born at number 16, Ronda Street), is one of the busiest squares, filled with youths who start their night here (with beer and tapas) every weekend. The square originally connected the city centre to the Begoña district, where people would go to pray to the Virgin Mary or ‘Amatxu’, in the Basilica, up the 213 steps of the Calzadas de Mallona. Today, it is a perfect amalgamation of different styles, people and atmospheres, ideal for shopping and dining. An interesting array of shops surrounds it, offering local antiques to brand name clothing. At night, this place has a wonderful atmosphere. This is the typical place to have a drink after a hard day’s work. If you visit Bilbao during its Semana Grande festivals (from the 15th of August), you will be able to enjoy concerts, markets and a plethora of activities.
New Square

Hustle and bustle in its purest form.
“My New Square is cold, uniform and a square from which art escapes…” This is how Miguel de Unamuno described this square. He was a distinguished figure in Spanish literature and one of the first of the ’98 Generation. It was originally named Fernando VII Square, in honour of the monarch’s visit to Bilbao. Silvestre Perez was in charge of this project, which sought to bring more housing and growth to the city of Bilbao. This was only achieved for a short amount of time, but it gave rise to an extremely functional rectangular square, which encompasses the life and soul of the city. If you arrive here at midday, it’s a great place to sample tapas, particularly the ‘rabas’ (calamari), served in this area. If you’re there at night, have a few drinks (this is the perfect place to grab a beer and some tapas) and watch the youths prepare to start their night. There is also a market every Sunday, offering a mixture of antiques, old records and clothing. Just before Christmas, another market comes to town to celebrate Saint Thomas, which is known as a ‘treat for the taste buds’. If you’re around for this, don’t miss it.
Arriaga Theatre
With its royal peacocks, people from Bilbao are always talking about the Arriaga. Any stage actor would kill to tread its boards.
A first-class theatre.
As though it is made for drawing in crowds who leave St. James’ Cathedral, the Arriaga Theatre is just 400 metres away. This is the jewel in the crown of Bilbao, and you will never meet a Biscayan who isn’t proud of this building. The Arriaga of today first opened its curtains in 1890, offering an alternative to the old ‘Town Theatre’, an 1834 building, which was brought down after having lived through two Carlist wars and the Sieges of Bilbao. The building takes its name from a Bilbao composer, Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga, who is know as the ‘Mozart of Spain’. It survived the Civil War, which is imprinted in it’s façade, and a fire, which called for a complete restoration of the interior. Nonetheless, we do recommend entering to observe the stalls, which are extremely impressive. The bust that presides over the theatre is of its creator, architect Joaquin de Rucoba. Its 1,200 seats below a gold and red stage still witness performances, concerts and first-rate events. Its programme has given the Arriaga Theatre a first-class reputation.
Saint Anton Church
Be wary of Saint Anton, as he keeps too many secrets and can't be trusted!

Welcome to the church of secrets, where nothing is what it seems. Located on the banks of Bilbao’s river, Saint Anton Church is actually the church of Saint Antonio Abad, but very few people call it by its real name. This building witnessed the birth of the city. Although it was built in around 1300 (the year the city was founded), there was already a marketplace in the same location around three hundred years earlier. Every day, fishermen and other locals came to buy and sell fish and other wares at this market. The citadel was then built and, taking advantage of the market’s ruins and walls, the Cathedral was built. However, as is typical of old city monuments, numerous natural catastrophes (particularly the river bursting its banks) have left very little of the original décor. They recently discovered the remains of the first building, which are exhibited behind the altar (open to the public from Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 12:30 and 17:00 to 20:00). If you look at the city’s coat of arms, the Gothic temple is the Saint Anton Church.

St. James’ Cathedral is the monument in charge of keeping the memories of Old Bilbao, founded by Diego Lopez de Haro in 1300, alive. Not many people know that this building is not the same one that existed back then. After a large fire, it was only in 1404 that they began work on today’s building, which was finished at the end of the 15th century. This Gothic construction was built in honour of Saint James he Greater, Patron Saint of the Cathedral and of Bilbao. It is now the headquarters of the Diocese of Bilbao and is strategically located as one of the obligatory stops on the Santiago de Compostela walking route. Its north façade, or ‘Angel’s Door’, features a scallop shell, showing pilgrims which way to go. The Cathedral suffered terrible flooding during the 90s, due to its close proximity to Bilbao River. Renovations lasted until 2000, which now allow you to start your visit to the Old Town from here. The terraces surrounding the Cathedral are a great place to sit and observe this mighty building, as long as it isn’t raining!

Did you know that Bilbao was founded twice? First, don Diego Lopez de Haro, known as ‘the Intruder’, founded the city on the 15th of June 1300 by means of Town Charter. Ten years later, in 1310, Maria Diaz de Haro repeated the same Town Charter process, using almost exactly the same words, but omitting the previous foundation. The Bilbao Gran Via pays homage to its founder. Stretching over one and a half kilometres, it starts at Circular Plaza (España Plaza) and ends at the feet of he Sacred Heart. This avenue has become the epicentre of Bilbao activity. It combines a large shopping area with the heart of finance. You can, therefore, find all sorts of shops and restaurants on this road, as well as the most important businesses and institutional buildings. When passing Moyua Square, you will see the Carlton Hotel. This building was the first headquarters of the Basque Government, and if you look at its entrance steps, you will see that they have been converted into windows. These were the headquarters’ windows, as, for security reasons, it was located in the basement, now the hotel’s wine cellar.
