Excursion to Capurgana
Capurgana has deserted beaches, isolated villages, small coves and crystal clear waters. An oasis to lose yourself in.
Atlantic Paradise Lost.
Colombia is one of the few countries with beaches on two great oceans: the Atlantic and the Pacific. Well, Capurgana is one of the lost paradises of the Atlantic coast. An oasis with endless sandy beaches on the Gulf of Urabá, near Cabo Tiburon. Though it now has an airport, it still retains the feel of a remote village and deserted beaches. It is the ideal place to end a trip to Colombia by spending a couple of days wandering endless coves and bathing in clear waters. All the water sports you can imagine are available here. You can observe the area's enormous variety of marine fauna and, at dusk, watch the sun go down over the sea and dine on the edge of the sand. You can get here by land or by air. Once you arrive in Capurgana you will not want to leave.

Music Festival.
Rock the Park is a gigantic music festival that is held every year in the city of Bogota. If you are in the city in July, this festival is one of the best and unforgettable activities that you can do. This is a completely free outdoor festival. It is held in the Plaza de Bolivar where thousands upon thousands of young people sleep throughout the night so that they will be able to see their favourite groups play. Many world-famous bands have played on this stage. The festival also makes room for Colombian music and its most renowned artists, although they are not very popular. So, if you like music, Rock the Park is a great way to learn about Colombian music in its purest form.
Gabriel García Márquez Cultural Centre
He earnt enough fame with 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' to ensure he will never be forgotten. For example, a button.
The Gabo.
Gabriel García Márquez, or Gabo, is the most important figure in Colombia's history of literature and culture. He is a symbol of the country and of the South American continent. His portrayal of culture and customs in One Hundred Years of Solitude made him become his country's icon. That is why this centre bears his name. This place contains an art gallery and a huge library where you can plunge into the country's culture and history. It is in La Candelaria, on Calle 11 5-60. Being so close to Simón Bolívar Plaza makes it a good way to take a tour of Columbia's history. In fact, inside, there is a popular coffee shop where you can drink while you find about the influence and the story of the author. If you want to get to know Colombia, you will need to recognise the importance of Gabo.
Café Canterbury

Café Canterbury is named after Chaucer's famous Canterbury Tales. In keeping with this, it is open to the public as a cultural centre. All kinds of cultural activities are held here every day. Most of Colombia's major stars have cut their teeth on this stage; it is open every day and is a great way to end your day. Billares Londres
Amazing places to play pool and drink refreshing polas (beer) in a student atmosphere.

Get ready to enter one of the most amazing places in Bogota. Billares Londres opened its doors on Bogota's Carrera Séptima (7th) more than half a century ago. Inside, games of pool are played alongside groups of young people drinking polas (as they call beer in Colombia). Its décor and music are what makes it different and at the same time characteristic of Bogota. From the entrance inwards, the walls are completely filled with a mixture of all cultures, from Roman to native African tribes, from India to motifs typical of Spain or London: no space is left unfilled. So it is typically Colombian, because of the mixture of many cultures. Los Billares Londres has become the most popular place for students and young people to start a weekend night out. And now, do you dare play a game of pool?
Bogota's Pink Zone (Zona Rosa)

When night falls, the city of Bogota is a great place to mingle and have a drink. That said, you need to know about the city and where you're going, and take certain precautions. The Zona Rosa neighbourhood to the north of the city is a most excellent area for evening entertainment. There is a mixture of lots of restaurants with cosy summer terraces, pubs for an after dinner drink and discos that stay open all evening. After dinner, there is the highly recommended T Zone, where two streets meet, with lots of bars and a great young student atmosphere. Now prepare to meet rumbas and all kinds of rhythms and Latin music: you're at Bogota party central!

In the north of the city, on the road that leads to Chia, you will find the Multi Parque Creativo, a huge children's entertainment park. Its large installations contain a combination of nature, sports and leisure. While it is famous for children's miniature golf championships, they will also learn about Colombia's culture through various related activities, including lots of native animals that the children will love. The area surrounding the park is also well worth a visit for a stroll around the green outskirts of Bogota; there are also plenty of shops and entertainment facilities for the elderly. It is perfect if you are travelling with small children and you would like a bit of peace while they have fun.

Throughout Colombia and the entire continent of South America, culture has always been of the utmost importance. We must not forget that, on one hand, most of these countries have been through major conflicts in the 19th century in order to achieve emancipation (Colombia did not gain independence from Spain until 1819). On the other hand, cultural fusion and immigration mean that cultural phenomena are a blend of traditions from many parts of the world, making them unique and wonderful. The National Theatre, which opened in 1981 with the play The Hostage, is proof of that. Together, the Fanny Mikey Theatre and the National Theatre House have struggled to protect and bring culture and entertainment to the people of Bogota. Every day, concerts, plays and all kinds of internationally successful shows take the stage, but a large space is also reserved for all national initiatives. It is a unique opportunity to understand more about Colombian culture.

Play at being a grownup: cool. Children can have fun taking part in simulations of real life situations. They will have a great time.
Mini paradise.
Bogota's youngsters' paradise is called Divercity Bogota: an amusement park designed like a city where children can play all kinds of grown-up roles. The centre's intention is to amuse children while they learn to take part in society. Children between 3 and 13 can play in this mini-city while the grown-ups wait outside. From the detective school to the fire station, passing by the house of fashion and the house of mining. It is in the Santafé Shopping Centre and there is also a crèche. You can take the opportunity to visit the surrounding shops or just relax and have a drink in the area while the little ones have fun.
El Campin Stadium (Estadio El Campín)
Football fans, don't miss the El Campin Sunday match: with its festive atmosphere it really is worth seeing.
Goal!
Colombia's top football stadium is named after the neighbourhood it is in. It is on the outskirts of Bogota, in the Teusaquillo area. This stadium mainly serves two teams, who play there on alternate weekends: the Millionarios and Santa Fé, as well as, on occasion, the city's most humble team La Equidad. A symbol of South American continental identity, football and competition in general, have a strong presence and cause much excitement. So if you're a football fan, we recommend that you get a pair of tickets for a game. Not only for football. In the stadium, everything that happens during the afternoon is a spectacle: camaraderie, chanting and shouting make the people of Bogota forget about their problems for a while: the length of a Sunday match.
Chicaque Natural Park
Majestic peaks, jungle forests, rivers full of waterfalls: nature in its purest, wildest state.
Nature Reserve.
The Chicaque Natural Park is 30 minutes from Bogota and there are regular trains and buses. This nature reserve is in a stunning park of more than 300 hectares with a blend of many ecosystems, from the river with lush forests, almost jungles, up to the toughest peaks, such as the Pico del Águila (Eagle's Peak) where you can admire the grandeur of this spot. The tour will take you to an oasis that will strike you as incongruous, like the huge waterfalls of more than 60 metres in height in the Quebrada Velez. Throughout the entire reserve there are many different trails depending on how daring the visitor is. But don't be scared, there are many tourists here so there is no risk. Anyway, get ready to be at one with the wildest nature you've ever seen.
Tequendama falls (Salto de Tequendama)
A natural mystical grove, full of charm, totally far from the madding crowd. An impressive experience.
A tour with a difference.
We provide an impressive tour that stands out from the others. Thirty kilometres southwest of the Colombian capital, you can reach the city of Soacha by train or bus. Here, the Funza river passes through Bogota's sabana. And in the middle of this mystical place, a mixture of rainforest and continuous mist, the river plummets to form a waterfall of more than 155 metres high. It is one of the most stunning natural phenomena that you'll ever see: it is said that this waterfall appeared as the earth God Chibchacum's vengeance to punish the local people for their sins. It is located deep in nature, where humans have barely been able to alter the space. The view of this natural grove is only broken by the Hotel Salto close to the waterfall, a beautiful building that sadly is no longer open to the public.
Carrera 7ª
As well as traffic and shops, this avenue exudes history and tradition from every pore. Unmissable.
Bogota's High Street
Steeped in tradition, history and traffic surge through Carrera 7ª every day. It is the most important street in the city of Bogota. Like a spine, it connects the Julio 20 neighbourhood in the south with the expensive first Chía neighbourhood in the north of the city. Nearly 500 years of history can be studied in this street. Actually, Bogota has developed around this road. This street plays a part in all important celebrations. In fact, you can walk the stretch that runs from Plaza de Bolivar to Calle Real del Comercio; this is a route called the septimazo and it will show you the old city and the most emblematic sites. That said, please take care because the traffic is very heavy and drivers in Bogota do not always respect traffic lights and road signs.
Parque de la Independencia
Colombia suffered for its freedom. That is why this city is full of symbols honouring this long struggle.
A tribute to independence.
To understand the city of Bogota, as well as the large majority of South American cities and countries, it is essential to understand that they all fought bloody battles to achieve independence, mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries. This history is so recent that it still has a strong presence in the city, in its monuments, streets and everything related to society. Coinciding with the first centenary of Colombian independence, this park was opened in 1910 as a tribute to independence, to the fallen and to the Colombians. One of the sides is bordered by the Santafé neighbourhood. Its dimensions are so large that it has become a small city forest with a great diversity of tree and animal species. After going for a good stroll inside and resting in its small plazas, you can walk down to the city centre.
The Ciclovía
Thanks to this initiative, at certain times, you can explore Bogota by bike without danger from other vehicles. Consult the timetable!
A great local initiative.
This Bogota initiative allows you to see the city in a way which would otherwise be impossible. The Ciclovíá is an initiative that has been in operation since 1974: on Sundays from 7:00am until 2:00pm, the city's main roads are reserved for bicycles, pedestrians and all kinds of non-motor vehicles. The Ciclovíá covers seven routes through the main streets of the city; a total of 121 kilometres, taking you through the most important areas of Bogota. You can explore the whole city by foot or bicycle away from the danger of cars or other vehicles. There are numerous places to hire bicycles and it doesn't cost much to hire one for the whole day. By the way, the Ciclovía also operates on some holiday evenings, check the dates because it's worth exploring the city by bike in the evening.
Parque de la 93
A green summer paradise flanked by shops and terraces. An ideal sunny day activity.
Green Bogota.
The Parque de la 93 is one of the city's largest and most beautiful parks; there is also a shopping area with restaurants and terraces that make it one of Bogota's golden miles of fashion. In conclusion, this is one of the most pleasant and agreeable places to wander around during a long afternoon or an intense morning. Allow a good while for exploring the city's huge green lung. On those sunny summer days, this place turns into a paradise for Colombians. Afterwards, while you are there, you can have lunch or dinner on any of the terraces in the new boulevard that flanks the park. This area has become one of the city's main shopping areas over the last few years. This is also a great place for an after dinner drink. You will enjoy the great atmosphere.
Parque Metropolitano Simon Bolivar
There are many opportunities for entertainment and relaxation in this park, which is as vast as it is charming.
The largest park in Bogota.
Of course, the largest park in the city should be named after the person won independence for Colombia. That's probably what the founders of the Parque Metropolitano Simon Bolivar thought. Thousands upon thousands of Bogota's citizens visit this gigantic space of more than 400 hectares every day. The park was opened in 1979 to commemorate the second centenary of his birth and the site is so vast that it has been divided into several smaller parks: Parque Central Simón Bolívar, Parque el Salitre and Parque de los Novios. As well as beautiful walks among the park's flora and fauna, there are several sections dedicated to sport. There are cycle paths and athletics trails, hiking, football pitches and basketball courts, and more. There are also places for the popular customs of lying in the grass for a rest or throwing a picnic together.
Mount Montserrat
At a height of 3,100 metres it dominates panoramic views from all corners of the city. Unbeatable!
It watches over the city.
Monserrat watches over the city of Bogota from an altitude of more than 3,100 metres. Known as the teeth-shaped mountain, you can see it from any point. The views of the whole city and the surrounding area are unparalleled, and the trek is worth it, even if just for the tour of the spots along the top. However, you still have to see the monastery that was built over four centuries ago and is a pilgrimage site for many Colombians every day. They come here to venerate the Black Madonna. There are also a couple of highly recommended restaurants at the top. By the way, you can go up this mountain in a cable car or on the funicular train. Although for the brave, the old stone paved route is still open for the devotees to climb. However you get up there, this is Bogota's most impressive viewpoint.
Bogota Central Cemetery (Cementario Central de Bogotá)
Although somewhat macabre, you need to visit this cemetery if you want to understand Colombian idiosyncrasy to perfection.
The city of the dead.
Although it may seem a tad gloomy, visiting Bogota Central Cemetery is almost essential if you want to understand the country and Colombian culture. The cemetery is in the Santafé neighbourhood and is commonly known as la Ciudad de los Muertos (City of the Dead). Here lie the remains of many figures from Colombian history. Many important soldiers who fought in the Colombian War of Independence or in the Thousand Day War are buried here. There are numerous tributes to the fallen. You can visit as part of a historical tour through the history of Colombia. It is also worth going to see the décor that adorns every corner of the cemetery. It is surprising to note how important cultural blending and superstition are to the Colombians. You've never seen anything like it.
Plaza de Bolívar
Of course, it is inevitable that the Colombians worship Bolivar. This plaza is a good example of this.
The main square.
If the figure of Simon Bolivar is present throughout the continent of South America, it is even more important in Colombia. He was the liberator of this country: the leader of the movement that confronted the Spanish empire and won the country's emancipation in 1819. He is therefore, perhaps, the most revered historical figure in Colombia. For the same reason, there is a plaza named after him in the middle of the city of Bogota. This is the city's main square, between Carreras 7ª and 8ª and Calles 10 and 11. Actually, this plaza has been the town's Plaza Mayor since before independence and is still known by that name. Ranchers, farmers and traders used to come here to buy and sell their goods. The statue of Bolivar was erected in 1846 in the middle of the square but was inaugurated years later. It is one of the most charming corners of the city and it is worth sitting here for a while, contemplating the blend of elements and eras that decorate this square.
The looms of Bogota
Don't know what to take home as a souvenir? A traditional cloak or poncho might be just the thing.
Rooted tradition.
One of Bogota's most deep-rooted traditions is to be found in the area's clothes and fabrics Generally, cloaks or ponchos, are woven in a particular way and include motifs that delve deep into mythology and Colombian customs. The characteristic feature is the so-called black line: a motif that represents the Mamos, spiritual authorities, which surround a sacred area protected by good thoughts. These ponchos are usually black and white with all kinds of figures but they always have these characteristic lines. You can find them in any stall, shop or market. It is a beautiful way to take home a piece of local culture as a souvenir.
Music and Colombian folklore
Musical folklore is waiting to be discovered as you stroll through the streets of Bogota. You will never forget the sound of the 'Bejuco del alma'.
To the sound of music.
As you will have already noticed, music pervades the entire city. It is common to see improvised performances and folk music in every street, parks, bar and plaza. This music has its own character because it is not played on standard instruments. It is common to find groups of musicians playing the Yagé, also known as Bejuco del alma: an instrument that comes from Colombian ancestral culture, crafted from a sacred jungle plant. This type of flute, made from hollow branches, is one of the foundations of Colombian music and they are easy to find in shops and stalls. You can visit the shops where Carrera 7 meets 22 and 24. These are a really good souvenir of Colombian culture and you don't need any musical training to play them. What is more, it is a nice decorative object, characteristic of the city and the country.
Colombian crafts
Ivory beads' (from a type of palm) and 'Werregues' (woven jars) represent genuine local craftsmanship. It's often best to buy them from mobile sellers.
Artisan memories.
One of the Colombia's most emblematic products is its craftwork. It can be found all over the city, at different prices; this is one of the best ways to understand Colombian culture. Among the most popular pieces are the ivory beads: tiny figures sculpted in the seeds of the fruit of the ivory palm, named for their colour. Created by a complicated artisan process of drying and woodcarving, you will find them in an infinite number of shapes and colours. There are also the Werregue: ancestral baskets decorated with various symbols of pre-Colombian cultures. It is easy to find all sizes and colours imaginable but you should ask what the symbols represent. Then you'll know a bit more about Colombian culture and you'll be able to choose your favourite werregue. We recommend the mobile sellers' stalls around the Plaza de Bolivar.

This establishment is an institution in Bogota. It is one of Colombia's most prestigious coffee houses. In its cafés scattered around the city centre, you will find a variety and quality of coffee unlike anything you've ever seen. The company has also opened different premises around the city. These are not just cafés but rather spaces which bring together exhibitions, tasting and shops selling the company's products along with numerous activities such as the famous everything you can imagine when visitors can invent their own recipes. Carrera 7 and Central Zone
Irresistible and versatile shops on the city's most excellent high street.
The high street.
As you know, Carrera Séptima (7th) is city's main road. It crosses Bogota from north to south. But in the area around Plaza Bolivar you'll find the old town where there are lots of narrow streets with all kinds of shops to wander around. Being in the central area, the shops are scattered along the streets. The shoe shops are highly recommended for quality and price and can be found alongside electronics and all kinds of household accessory shops. You can also find internationally recognised designer shops alongside family shops where you will find many traditional and unique objects. We recommend you spend a few hours wandering around. The shops are definitely worth visiting.
Productos Joyce
You will be naughty. These sweets are truly memorable; you can even buy a brazo de reina (similar to a swiss roll) as a souvenir of Bogota.
Sweet delicacies.
You won't be able to resist the sweet sins of this place. The Joyce cake shop opened its doors for the first time more than 35 years ago in a small garage in the city. It now has seven shops spread throughout the centre of Bogota. As you know, desserts and pastries are one of Colombia's specialities. Well. A visit here will leave you with no doubts. The flagship shop is on Calle 90 (although the rest of the shops come highly recommended). Their specialities are cheese muffins, known as repollitas , the milky way, their lemon cakes but above all the Brazo de la Reina (the Queen's Arm - a swiss roll) and the milhojas, or millefeuilles. These are the perfect souvenir delicacy to take away with you. Of course, it is also a very pleasant place to sit and enjoy breakfast or afternoon tea with one of their desserts accompanied by genuine Colombian coffee.
Unicentro
Strolling around this modern residential area is positively pleasant and inviting.
Huge.
The Unicentro space was designed in the 1970s as a form of sustainable expansion for the city. The project was designed to unite trade with a residential area in a new neighbourhood so that the city is developed in a controlled manner. That is how Unicentro came into being. At present, you can visit this gigantic shopping centre and all its surroundings that were part of the project. And indeed, this resulted in the appearance of new neighbourhoods such as La Carolina and Santa Barbara. Many Bogotanos have moved here (the corner of Carrera 15 and Calle 127) to find work in the surrounding area: a well-maintained peaceful area of the city. There are continuous green areas and shops (inside and outside the shopping centre); it is one of the best examples of modern life in the city of Bogota.
Andino Shopping Centre (Centro Comercial Andino)

The most exclusive shopping.
The Andino Shopping Centre first opened its doors in 1993 in the heart of the El Retiro in Bogota's Zona Rosa. This centre is one of the city's most exclusive spots for shops and shopping. It is also next to the financial heart of the city. In this area you will find luxury fashion and jewellery shops amongst others, but there is also a great atmosphere after the shops close. This entire neighbourhood is a new zone where Bogota's most settled members of society have moved to. Among the many company buildings, businesses and a large residential area, you will find plenty of restaurants and pubs where you can have dinner and a drink. In fact, you can carry on drinking because at night, especially at weekends, this area comes alive with people filling the neighbourhood's bars.
San Alejo Flea-market (Mercado de las pulgas)
Disorder and versatility reign in this market, packed with pre-loved items from Bogota's homes. Worth seeing.
Impressively original.
On the corner of Carrera 7 and Calle 24, facing the Torre Colpatria, you will find one of the most unique markets you've ever seen. This is the San Alejo Flea-market, held here every Sunday and holiday Monday. People come here from all over the city and surrounding area to sell all sorts of things they no longer need. Don't expect to find an organized market with neatly laid out stalls. Here you will find the most unlikely objects, the most curious antiques and the city's most original gifts for a nominal price. There are CDs among dishes, tableware with repaired electrical appliances and books with children's toys. It is your mission to find, among all these stalls, something to take away as a souvenir.
Paloquemao Market
Immerse yourself in the bustle of Bogota's daily life in this market where bartering is essential.
Noteworthy food market.
Legend has it that its name comes from a tree in the centre of this neighbourhood that caught fire in strange circumstances. Anyway that is how the neighbourhood, and subsequently the market, came to be called Paloquemao. Paloquemao market is the most important food market in the city. Inside, as well as being a really charming place to visit, you'll get a glimpse of real life in the city of Bogota. Merchants and neighbours barter over the prices of food, fabrics and other products to be found there. Although the primary focus is food, you'll find all sorts of stalls and merchants. If you're looking for a gastronomic souvenir of the city, you've come to the right place. Here you will find high quality traditional Colombian food products at good prices. Bartering is permitted.
Dessert at Barrios Unidos
You should not leave Bogota without visiting the dessert quarter and delighting in any of its traditional sweets
A sweet end to the party.
Sweet lovers have to go to this area at least once. Located further north of Chapinero, Barrios Unidos is the city's favourite place to go to enjoy Bogota's traditional desserts. If you don't have much time to wander around, the best thing to do is to go straight to the dessert quarter. On Carrera 50 between Calles 63 and 68, this area has a unique origin. Someone from the neighbourhood began selling their home-made desserts, which led to the creation of a company. As the number of customers grew, many neighbours joined in, resulting in a variety of little artisan companies, specialising in the preparation of traditional sweets. These days, a lot of people come here to sample the homemade masato, hojaldres, cuajada melao and other recipes unique to each of the area's companies.
Arcanos Mayores
You can tell as soon as you enter that the Tarot is present in every corner of this unusual restaurant.
Uniquely different and exquisite.
Peculiarity is one of the main dishes. However, it is accompanied by food. If you're around the Usaquén neighbourhood and don't know where to eat, stroll along Carrera 5ª to find this unusual restaurant. It is defined by tradition and tarot. From the table you can see the cooks' traditional dress, because it has an open kitchen. Added to this are the decorative motifs, which reflect the tarot tradition. Even the menu is part of a huge deck. If you can, try to get a table on the ground floor, as the cooking smells from the open kitchen can reach the second floor. When ordering, bear in mind that its main attractions are cheeses and lomo. However, you'll see that the menu contains other meats and fish traditionally served in the city.
La Puerta Falsa
Tamales and chocolate with cheese are essentials in this small and always crowded restaurant: all an epicurean must.
Emblematic.
Welcome to one of the city's favourite little spots. Take the opportunity to go for lunch or afternoon tea when you're strolling through La Candelaria. To get there, take the Calle 11 eastwards from Plaza Bolivar. Pay attention as you walk because it is only a small place and you may walk past without noticing it. But don't be fooled by its size, because this is one of the most popular and crowded places in the whole city. It has been here for more than a hundred years and today remains an emblem of Colombian cuisine. When you enter, the first thing you will notice is the smell of chocolate. Next, you will notice its ancient and traditional looks. Don't worry if it is very busy; people here do not usually take long to eat their meals. This is the Bogotanos' alternative to the more select G Zone and Parque de la 93. La Macarena, the M Zone's main neighbourhood, is to the north of the old town over 26th Street. If you come here for a stroll, you'll see that the prevailing atmosphere is young, relaxed and bohemian. You will find some of the best international cuisine restaurants here. There is also a lot of Colombian and foreign food fusion. In any case, the quality here is provided by a mixture of good food, good atmosphere and good prices. There is a wide range of cuisine: Italian food in the Bellini Trattoria on Carrera 13ª, Mexican in the San Lorenzo restaurant next door, Thai in the Republik on Carrera 10ª, etc., as you will see, throughout its streets, a huge variety of possibilities stretches out before you.

When you're inside, you'll forget you are in a city. This place is a favourite for those who like to eat in peace. Its location in La Candelaria, where Calle 9 crosses Carrera 2ª, also makes it a real hidden treasure. When you enter this colonial house, the first thing you notice is that it was not built as a restaurant. Its owner and chef Pascal Tournamille converted this ranch so that he could open it as a restaurant. Once there, don't hesitate to go out and eat in their famous garden. Come here and enjoy the half French and half Colombian food in one of the city's friendliest environments. After lunch, if you are in no hurry, you can have a coffee in a hammock while you rest your food down. Or, if you prefer, you could go for a little stroll to admire the plants in the garden.

You can't leave Bogota without having tried the coffee. This drink has always been one of the country's most emblematic icons and to this day is a guarantee of quality. If you look carefully, you'll see that coffee culture is still very much alive in the city. The many places dotted along the streets where you can get a tea or coffee are often filled with people who are meeting for various reasons. If you have time, join them for a while. There are several Diletto Cafés in the north of the city, from the G Zone upwards. This local chain is dedicated to making drinks using only Colombian coffee and is a good place to try different preparations. If you want to stop for a rest while walking through the old town, you could try Café Para Dos in La Candelaria. Apart from this, you'll see that it is rare not to find several attractive cafés on any walk.

If you are a seafood enthusiast, this place is ideal for you. To try it out, you have two options. If you are planning a trip to the north, the Yerbabuena branch is a perfect place to include. It is a quiet place where families go for walks with the children at weekends. On the other hand, if you are walking through the city, the central Luna Park branch is more convenient. The restaurant, which very popular among the locals, has been around for more than sixty years. During that time, it has earned the approval of critics as well as the locals. Their specialities are shrimp carbonara, seafood casseroles and trout. Part of what makes it special is its love for the city's tradition. If your visit coincides with a festival, you'll see they wear special dress for the day and prepare special food days.

If you are wondering where in the city you should go to eat, this is always a good bet. The G Zone is between the Emaus and Bellavista neighbourhoods near Carrera 7ª. If you go there, you'll see that on the way there are all kinds of restaurants with a general haute cuisine theme. That is why its local nickname is the Gourmet Zone. Those with discerning taste simply must come here; it is one of the city's most exclusive areas. Because of this, it is the perfect location if you like to eat lunch or dinner in peace. Away from the hustle and bustle of the central neighbourhoods, there is a more relaxed atmosphere. What's more, there is a wide choice, since here you will find traditional restaurants, international food and even fusions of both.
The Bogota Beer Company

Artisan beer.
If you are visiting the area to the north of the city you might not want to sit down for a long time to eat. One of the best alternatives is to stop for a beer in one of the BBC pubs. These are points of sale for the Bogota Beer Company, the city's only artisan brewery. Following the German malted barley and hops recipe, this brewery offers six different types of beer. Its premises are distributed around strategic points to the north of the city, including the Emaus, El Retiro or El Sauzalito neighbourhoods. You'll feel right at home here if you're a beer-lover. You can sit amongst the Bogota and Brewery themed décor and try different beers accompanied by various traditional tapas. The sausages, pies or ribs are ideal for an energy boost before you continue walking.

Succulent cuisine.
To familiarise yourself with life in Bogota, you must try its food. Like the rest of Colombia, this city has a huge and varied cuisine. If you can, avoid restaurants serving food from other countries. You can spend many days only eating food from different regions of Colombia without eating the same dish twice. Its exotic fruits are the stars of the culinary show. They can be found in any bar or restaurant, in salads, juices and cocktails. The Chapinero neighbourhood is famous for its traditional restaurants, such as Las Margaritas. You can't leave any of these restaurants without trying the traditional potatoes and cassava, as well as the various local meat and fish dishes. If you would like to try the city's hand-made chocolates, try La Florida on the corner of Carrera 7ª and Calle 21.

A long visit.
This is the place to come if you want escape for a good long while. It is also best to come with plenty of time to spare, since it is quite likely that you will lose track of time once you are inside. Although is somewhat out of the way in the north central part of the city, it is well worth a visit for something different to do. Far from being just another of the area's tourist attractions, these gardens are an important study centre and they are working on the revitalization of the country's vegetation here. Once inside, any fan of biology will not have time enough to explore the many enormous gardens. On the other hand, it's worth going just to have a rest among natural surroundings. Sit in the different forests, visit the springs or the roses. If you are looking for a place where you can enjoy some peace, this is perfect.
The National University Art Gallery
Here you will find the country's youngest and most innovative artists. What's more, its Pizano collection is priceless.
Bogota's most modern.
As with other cities, Bogota has its own place for emerging culture. Going to see it is a unique way to meet the more modern face of the city. To do this, you need to go to Teusaquillo. The National University Art Museum stands in the university campus. For about fifty years, this organisation has been responsible for accommodating new artistic trends from the hands of young artists. Inside, the program includes exhibitions of painting, photography, dance, film, etc. Before you go, you should take a look at the program. But the museum also has a fixed collection of twentieth century art where you can see works by Umberto Giangrandi, Carlos Rojas and Bernardo Salcedo. However, its major attraction is the Pizano collection with its plaster replicas of works of art from all periods and cultures.

In La Candelaria, near Plaza Bolivar, there is another place where you can come into contact with Bogota's cultural offerings. Apart from the numerous and varied documents, which you can access, conferences and exhibitions are hosted here regularly. It's worth taking a look at their schedule. If you can, visit another of its attractions: the auditorium where various classical music concerts are performed. The library goes well with the other Banco de la Republica buildings, which form the city's main cultural circuit. Of all of them, this one is ideal if you are looking for a bit of peace, whether among the shelves or on the terrace.
The Leopoldo Rother Museum of Architecture
This is highly recommended for anyone who, for one reason or another, feels close to architecture.
Walking around the faculty.
This place is a must-see for anyone who is into architecture. In Latin America, this is a totally unique place. To get there you need to go northwards, in the Teusaquillo neighbourhood. This green area contains the city's university campus. The place itself is worth visiting to enjoy the cultural atmosphere that permeates it. But make sure you go to the Faculty of Architecture for the museum. The building, designed by Leopold Rother, houses a great number of Colombian architectural designs. In addition to these, there are several internationally important modern examples. For anyone that wants to extend their visit, as well as the four main halls, there is a library. National Museum

Colombian history.
This is, without a doubt, the perfect place to immerse yourself in the history of the country. To do so we will have to move north. Between the neighborhoods of La Merced and San Diego, divided by Carrera 7ª, stands the historic building that contains it. Unlike these, the museum's exhibitions are always temporary. Still, it is the nerve center of culture in the city. However, this collection can be seen in its entirety at the Casa de la Moneda. There, an art history awaits you from colonial painting and sculpture to Botero.

More than 120 of Botero's works are preserved in this peaceful museum: you'll want to return again and again.

Don't be fooled by the sober and austere exterior of the building because the interior is a journey of colour. This museum, near the Plaza Bolivar, is a good place to visit when you want to rest awhile. You don't need spend too much time here, it depends on your passion for art. In fact, it can be a good place to retreat to several times over several days: it is a pleasant place and entrance is free. In any case, you have to go in at least once to admire the more than 120 works that Fernando Botero gifted to the Republic. The creator is the most iconic painter and sculptor in Colombia. When you arrive, look out for the posters: it's easy to miss the building. However, its location in the Casa de la Moneda is perfect. The building was one of the city's first colonial constructions, and possibly where the first gold coin of America was manufactured: the famous Doubloon. Museum of Gold
Here, you will travel around the country's colonial era, completely immersed in Colombian history and culture.
Much more than mere gold.
It is not only a museum of gold work. When you visit the city, you simply have to come here if you want to get to know Hispano-American culture. To get there, go towards Carrera 7ª at the top of Parque Santander. After your visit, this park is a nice place to rest and absorb what you have learnt. You can look around the museum in about an hour, but once inside, you may want to stay a bit longer. Throughout your visit, you will connect with the different cultures that lived in the area before the Spanish conquistadors arrived. There are many of these cultures and their legacy is huge. Three floors containing more than fifty thousand objects help you understand their history, importance and way of thinking. Without a doubt, it is one of the few places where you can get to know the face of the country before the colonial era.
Colpatria Tower (Torre Colpatria)
The city's tallest and most brilliant tower offers the best sunsets in the city from its rooftop terrace.
Modern skyscrapers.
Compared to the wide range of historical monuments, this building represents the more modern face of the city. It towers over the Avenida El Dorado, uniting the old town with the financial district. Occupying this site since 1978, this is the tallest skyscraper in the city. If you only want to see the outside, you should come in the evening. When the sun goes down, hundreds of LEDs light up to make this tower sparkle. The spectacle of all the different colours provides the perfect backdrop for your stroll around this area. However, if you plan on climbing up to the viewpoint on the roof, try to do so in the evening. At more than one hundred and seventy metres high and forty-eight floors, it has one of the most impressive views over the city. The circular terrace has a three hundred sixty degree-view so you can see anywhere in the capital.
Casa de Nariño
It would be a mistake to miss this guided tour. Its interior is perhaps more interesting than its exterior. With that in mind, book in advance!
Yesterday and tomorrow.
This building represents the past and the future of the Republic of Colombia. Partly because of its privileged location next to the Plaza Bolivar, it was chosen as the home for the Republic's president. But the other reason was the historical significance of the palace. From 1765, this was the home where one of the most significant heroes of the independence process was raised: Antonio Nariño y Alvarez. In spite of the fact that people usually view the palace from the outside when they are either on their way to the plaza or simply going for a walk around the La Candelaria neighbourhood, the interior is a highly recommended visit. If you want to do this, you need to be prepared: you will need to book well in advance. However, the guided tour is free and perhaps the most interesting in the city. Inside, you can see some of the country's most iconic art, decoration and politics.
Chapel of the Tabernacle (Capilla del sagrario)
A baroque façade, colonial painting, large religious sanctuary and walls full of history. Highly recommended.
A luxurious chapel.
To begin with, your view will be drawn to the left, attracted by the Primary Cathedral (Catedral Primada). However, you can't go to the Plaza Bolivar without going into this chapel. Because it is attached to the church, people often think that it is part of it. But the Chapel of the Tabernacle is a separate building that has at least equal historical and cultural importance. Although it has been renovated several times, the temple has been here since 1700. Since then, it has been a compulsory pilgrimage site for many religious folk. This is especially obvious during Holy Week (Semana Santa). As well as admiring the façade, which will hold any fan of baroque architecture enthralled for a long while, going in is vital. Inside you will find a large exhibition of paintings by Gregorio Vasquez de Arce y Ceballos, the most iconic painter of the colonial era from the 17th century.
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
You will recognize it instantly: it is the only monument in the area that radiates light and colour!
Colorful rainbow.
This place gives a touch of color to the historical part of the city. It is undoubtedly a welcome contrast with the sober streets of a colonial character that make up La Candelaria. Both its exterior and its interior are an unavoidable visit, although it is one of the hidden treasures. This National Monument is also one of the youngest in the city, since it was completed in 1938 as a replacement for the previous Iglesia del Carmen that occupied the place. To get there you can connect it from Plaza Bolívar. Walking along Carrera 7ª to see the Senate or the Palacio de Nariño and then taking Calle 8 to the west. You will know it when you see it. Its Gothic and slightly Arabic façade together with its red and cream colors make it unmistakable. Of course, when you arrive you may miss a little space on the street to appreciate its front part well.
Obelisk of the Martyrs
It is not its style that attracts attention, more the role it played during the country's independence process. Very interesting.
Direct witness.
This monument usually goes unnoticed. However, it is possibly the most significant in the history of Colombian independence. When you're in the Los Martyrs neighbourhood, you should take a closer look at the plaza that gives it its name. Previously known as La Huerta de Jaime, two hundred years ago it witnessed several battles between federalists and centralists. However, its real importance is born of being a main stage for the regime of terror. During this regime, between 1816 and 1819, a great many people accused of insurgency were executed in the plaza. To commemorate these victims of the struggle for independence the seventeen metre-high obelisk was erected in the plaza in 1880. If you get closer, you can read the inscriptions of the names of the martyrs to whom it pays tribute.
Primary Cathedral (Catedral Primada)
Its colonial structure is triumphant. Both its façade and its towers have many admirers; what have you got to lose?
An eventful life.
When you arrive at Plaza Bolivar, you have to get closer to see the cathedral. The site of the building has always been the base for the city cathedral. However, this church is the fourth to be built since 1538. During the course of the 16th century, three cathedrals were started, the last of which lasted until 1806. After this was demolished, the one which still stands today was erected. In spite of this busy history, the building is a symbol because of both the church and its architecture. Its popular name comes from being the city's seat of the Archbishop, Colombia's first Bishop. However, the number of people gathered in front of it are there to admire its neoclassical architecture. To this day, the design of the façade and its two towers are among the greatest examples of colonial structures.
Church of the Candlemas (Iglesia de La Candelaria)
Despite its low number of admirers, don't forget to visit it. Its lifespan makes it worthwhile.
One of the country's religious symbols.
This building has witnessed the story of the Republic. To reach it, go south down Calle 11 from the Plaza de Bolivar. Although you won't need to devote much time to visiting it, you can't not go in when you walk around La Candelaria. Its sober and austere presence has won it few admirers. However, this church is without doubt one of the oldest in the city and has been a national monument since 1975. Since it was finished in 1703, it has resisted the onslaught of time, an earthquake and the numerous demolitions of the 20th century. Even so, it has needed several renovations over the years. Its significance lies in the country's deeply entrenched religious influence, of which this church is still an active symbol. Today, a visit to the inside reveals a vision of the more traditional image of Catholicism on the continent.
Monument of Heroes
There has never been a battle without heroes. This monument honours those who fought for Colombian emancipation.
Latin Independence.
You can't truly get to know the city without knowing the history of its emancipation. In 1810, Colombia was the first Latin American country to give this cry of independence. Closely followed by its neighbouring countries, it began a series of battles that won its independence from the colonists. Today, these events are a very important part of national identity. Of the many monuments that are distributed around the city, the Monument of Heroes gets an honourable mention. Where the Chapinero and Barrios Unidos join, you will find this well of national cultural interest. On arrival you will see this area is presided over by a statue of Simon Bolivar, one of the greatest icons of the independence movement. As you approach the monument, you'll see that it is covered with inscriptions that remind us of the fallen and tell us about the most important battles of that era.

Are you physically and mentally exhausted? Do you need to switch off? Welcome to the place to do it!
For pilgrimage.
Take the opportunity to come here when you want to escape. If possible, don't miss out on the cable car ride up the hill where it is located. On the way, try to keep in mind the view that you are leaving behind. Once you are up there, you can admire the awesome image of the city from three thousand, one hundred fifty metres above it. The impact makes it worth the effort. Behind you, you will see the Sanctuary. This colonial-style church was erected in 1925 replacing the original hermitage. In spite of this, it remains a pilgrimage site for thousands of people. There are two mandatory parts of the tour. The first is the 16th century carving of the Fallen Lord inside the building. The second is to speak with any neighbour you find and ask them to tell you one of the place's many legends.
National Capitol
Whether you like it or not, its colossal neoclassical façade is imposing. A must-see.
Historic Walk.
A tour of La Candelaria is essential if you want to learn about Bogota's past. The streets of this area are infused with the history of the city and the country. Once there, the first place to visit is the Plaza de Bolivar. There, your view will be instantly drawn to the huge and imposing façade that presides over it. You are standing before the country's strongest Republican icon. National Capitol not only serves as the National Congress headquarters, but is also a fine example of neoclassical architecture. It was designed by Thomas Reed and finished at the beginning of the 20th century. It went on to be declared a National Monument in 1975. Unfortunately, you'll have to be content with viewing from the outside, because there is no public access to the interior. However, it is worth spending some time strolling around the area and taking a look at the entrance columns.
