Six best things to do in Budapest

El Parlamento de Budapest

1 Parliament Building

This most iconic image of Budapest is undoubtedly the magnificent Hungarian Parliament Building on the banks of the Danube. Even if you've seen it a thousand times, it still takes your breath away when it's standing right there in front of you. But don't just admire it from the outside: inside you'll discover a stunning work of art with a fascinating history. It's sure to be one of the memories you take back home with you.

Distrito del Castillo de Budapest

4 Castle District

To explore the historical part of Budapest, there's no better place to start than the Castle District (Várkerület), probably the most emblematic area of the city where cobblestone alleyways wind their away around a hill crowned by Buda Castle.

Buda Castle

A medieval fort in the 13th century and then a Gothic mansion, it subsequently evolved into a Renaissance palace and a vibrant intellectual, scientific and artistic centre. Invasions, fires, reconstructions and a favourite residence of dear Empress Sisi: visit the Royal Palace and you will take away a tiny piece of the city's history. Today it houses the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum and the National Széchényi Library.

Fisherman's Bastion

A must-visit attraction and one of the finest examples of Hungarian eclecticism, the Fisherman's Bastion no longer protects the city but has become an iconic part of the urban landscape, a favourite with tourists as well as a popular backdrop in films and music videos. Want to know why? Explore the towers, staircases and terraces to discover breathtaking views of the city.

Matthias Church

The first church built in the city of Buda and a masterpiece of Gothic art, this edifice has not only witnessed the passage of time but has played its own role in Hungarian history. The Matthias Church was and remains the scene of major events in the life of the city (and country as a whole): in the past, solemn royal coronations; today, a magnificent setting with unrivalled acoustics for the classical music concerts it combines with its religious functions.
