30 rare species in a Biosphere Reserve
Meet the Cuban crocodile.
This area has been classified as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since 1999. Water is the main ecological factor that conditions the characteristics of its complex ecosystems. Around 30 rare or endangered species coexist in this wetland. Here live species such as the Cuban crocodile in the world's most restricted habitat, for whose protection and development there is an internationally recognized scientific breeding ground, and the Manjuari fish, considered a living fossil. Points of interest during your visit can be: the Hatiguanico River, the Treasure Lagoon, the Cradle of Crocodiles, the Cave of the Fish, and the Girón Beach Museum._x000D_
Iznaga Tower (Trinidad)

The origin of the Iznaga Tower is linked to the history of the Iznaga brothers, wealthy landowners of the time as well as owners of sugar mills. It starts with a dispute between the two over the same young woman. They thus decided to settle their quarrel with two projects, whose length in feet would name the winner. Alejo created this 147-foot tall tower, while Pedro drilled a well 92 feet deep, from which town residents still drink. The Tower of Iznaga comes to our days as a sign of the wealth that once prevailed in the town._x000D_

Preserved for more than two centuries, the French tumba is a cultural expression that arrived on the island with French landowners who escaped the Haitian revolution with their slaves in 1791. It is distinguished by the dancers' costumes and the style, whose movements follow those of the so-called ballroom dance where women and men move with rhythm, softness and elegance. Guantanamo and Santiago de Cuba are the bastions of this dance, declared in 2003 by the UNESCO a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity._x000D_

The city of clay pots
An unbeatable example of Spanish colonial architecture, Camagüey was one of the first cities founded on the island more than 500 years ago. Its labyrinthine and well-conserved historic centre teems with plazas, museums, great townhouses painted in lively colours, interior courtyards, and a good number of churches; so much so, that it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The birth home of Major Ignacio Agramonte, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the famous Plaza del Carmen are some of its highlights. Interestingly, in squares and parks you will notice giant clay pots apparently lying on their sides, which were used to store rain water for periods of drought; this is why Camagüey is known as the city of 'tinajones', as these are known. At Simón Bolivar Street, 294, on the corner with José Martí and Frank País in downtown Trinidad, you will find a very special place: the gallery of Yudit Vidal Faife, one of the most popular and acclaimed local artists. If you're lucky Yudit herself will be the one who shows you around when you visit the gallery. This artist, who is proud of her Cuban roots, is a native of Trinidad, the same town that has been the inspiration for a great part of her work. Each brush stroke depicts scenes of life in the area. She will explain to you more about her artwork and her city at the gallery, which makes it the place to learn more about Cuba in-depth. Getting to know her paintings is a lesson in Cuban art from this century and the previous, its symbology and the history of Trinidad.

Don't forget to haggle!
It's true that Cuba is not the perfect destination for shopping, but you will find a handful of small markets around the island; in the center of each largeish town you will usually find several. This one in Varadero is located in the downtown area, which makes it the perfect excuse to take a stroll through its streets and get to know the area. Here you'll find typical Cuban crafts, objects made of carved wood, ceramics and fabrics that are typically found in this area. It's the perfect market to take home a souvenir from Cuba. We'd like to remind you that haggling is expected and should be practiced in all of the island's markets.
El Palenque
The perfect place to find typical Cuban products on sale.
The closest thing to a shopping center that you'll find.
Havana's municipality Playa, specifically in Siboney, is where you'll find this shopping center. It's located on 17th Street and 5th Avenue in Pabexpo. As you'll see for yourself, Havana and Cuba in general are not big shopping destinations, in particular for imported goods. However, Palenque offers a good mix of stores and sellers who peddle a variety of typical items. On one side you'll find crafts made of ceramic, leather, and other materials that are typically used in Cuban art and handiwork. On the other you'll find regional food products, as well as (according to many) the best bakery in Havana.
Cuba's Coffee
Its origins aren't Cuban, but it might as well be: Coffee is a critical part of daily life on the island.
Quality coffee.
While it's true that coffee is not a Cuban invention, the energizing drink has been tied to the history of the island since the French brought it over when they were fleeing Haiti's antislavery movement during the 18th century. Since then Cuba's coffee production has been constant and of the highest standards. The main coffee plantations can be found in mountains that reach between 1500 and 2500 feet above sea level: that's where the ideal climate for growing coffee can be found. That's why the Sierra Maestra has had a great and extended tradition of planting and producing coffee; the Escambray, Rosario and Organos sierras are also important coffee producing regions. It's easy to find a good cup of coffee throughout the island, and if you want to take some to brew at home as a souvenir, the brands you should consider, among others, are Cubita and Turquino._x000D_

In the heart of Santa Clara lies a place with a strong identity: La Veguita, located in the Constantino Pérez cigar factory and one of the most traditional cigar stores in the country. Secondly, its list of national rums is among the most complete on the island. Third, its coffee is amazing. La Canchánchara of Trinidad

Another interesting location.
Canchánchara is a creole drink, a mix of sugarcane spirits, honey and lemon juice. It's traditionally served in a hollowed-out gourd, and was the preferred beverage of the army that fought for Cuba's independence, toasting before each battle and after each victory. A quintessentially Cuban eatery bearing the same name as this drink opened in Trinidad, a perfect place to rest and recharge when you visit the city. In this genuinely Cuban atmosphere, you'll hear romantic boleros playing the moment you walk in. After all, all that's left is to taste the authentic local cuisine, with different kinds of rice, beans, meats and fish served alongside the eponymous canchánchara served in a clay cup. Don't forget to try the yuca: it's one of the specialties of the house, prepared in a variety of delicious ways._x000D_

Located in the Plaza de San Francisco, one of the four most important squares in Old Havana, is this Café de Oriente. It is a place with a more sophisticated and refined style than the usual restaurants in the city. In fact, it is the ideal place for a whim of lunch or dinner (rumor has it that it may be the best fish on the island). And, without a doubt, one of its strong points is its decoration. This restaurant maintains its original aesthetic, reminding us of what the golden 20s and 30s were like on the island._x000D_ _x000D_ Decades in which wealthy families from the area and from America came to settle on the island between money, luxury and comfort. In fact, the restaurant is so beautiful and cared for that we recommend that, although it has a beautiful terrace, you eat or dine inside. By the way, it is one of the few places that it is recommended (depending on the day) to book in advance.

Recommendations: congrí rice or ropa vieja
Tucked away in the heart of Old Havana, El Guajirito is one of those restaurants with excellent atmosphere and amazing traditional, home-cooked food. Well known among tourists for the quality of its food, El Guajirito has been open for decades serving Cuban creole delights. The specials of the day are usually made with fish, seafood and beef local to the area. The congrí rice and the ropa vieja (two of the most popular dishes in Cuban cuisine) are spectacular here. But the best is saved for last: At 9:30 pm. every night the live shows begin. Singers, musicians and dancers, many inspired by salsa and other native genres perform at this eatery. It's the kind of live show you can only experience in Cuba. It's essential and impressive!_x000D_

Coppelia is the cathedral of Cuban ice cream. This is justified by its endless daily queues.
A sweet secret.
Despite the fact that the most popular in Cuban cuisine are rice dishes with beans, fried plantains, and mojitos and daiquiris, its gastronomy does not end here. One of its most hidden and secret specialties are sweets. Although there are many variables in this field, we will focus on one: ice cream. And in one place: Coppelia. This house has become an institution in the production of this product to the point of being known as the cathedral of ice cream. Now you can find different places on the island, but the original opened its doors to the public in 1966. Since then, its 26 flavors and 25 possible combinations have satisfied the palates of Cubans and tourists day after day. Although it is true that the huge queues that form around the premises mean that they often do not have the full range of flavors, it is well worth refreshing yourself with one of their ice creams. And now, bon appetit!

Cuban institutions.
It's barely 15 years old, but the Casa del Ron has already become an institution in Matanzas province. Located in the beach resort town of Varadero, it receives thousands upon thousands of visitors throughout the year, who come to learn the history of the most important liquor in the country: rum. Hint: it's made of fermented sugar cane, and has grown by leaps and bounds since its introduction by Diego de Velázquez in the 16th century to the flourishing industry it is today. Naturally, your visit will include a tasting of all kinds of rums; surely you'll recognize many of the ones you taste, but you'll also find some gems you've like never tasted before. Cheers!_x000D_
Daiquiris in El Floridita
You're in the birthplace of the daiquiri. This is where Hemingway catapulted this drink to fame.
Daiquiri, anyone?
El Floridita, along with La Bodeguita del Medio, is the most famous bar on the island. As the urban legend goes, this is the birthplace of the daiquiri. Apparently when the War of Independence ended, a bartender invented the popular beverage, and it rapidly became one of the two best known cocktails in the island. Ernest Hemingway, a habitual patron of this bar and daiquiri enthusiast, became the best ambassador that El Floridita could ask for; we have him to thank for the popularity that daiquiris enjoy today. This is why El Floridita has two special recognitions for him: one is a statue that occupies the bar where they say he would sit to have his drinks, and the other is the Papa Hemingway Special, one of their most popular cocktails (a daiquiri with grapefruit).
Mojitos at La Bodeguita del Medio
This grocery store's fate wasn't to be a neighborhood market; it was to be the most emblematic bar on the island.
You'll give this place a star.
The history of La Bodeguita del Medio dates back to 1942. Around that time Angel Martínez set out to open a grocery store. He accomplished it, and the locals took it upon themselves to also make it a meeting place to have a drink, making it the preferred place for the community to congregate. Later on local artists also found it to be the perfect place to meet. But that wasn't enough for Martínez, who also patronized the artists himself. The transformation of La Bodeguita del Medio was inevitable, finally becoming a bar where you could find artists such as Alejo Carpentier, Gabriel García Márquez and especially Ernest Hemingway hanging out; all left autographs, drawings, photos and other mementos. Now you know why you can't leave Havana without having the obligatory mojito at this bar.
Typical dishes
Spanish cuisine, Creole cooking and African influences all make up Cuba’s culinary delights: delicious and surprising.
Time to eat!
Cuban cuisine is a mix of Spanish cooking, which arrived with the colonization of the island, creole cooking, which was devised by locals adding their own ingredients to the mix, and African cooking, as the great number of slaves that arrived on the island made for a grand gastronomic fusion before it was trendy. You'll find plates with fanciful names such as oros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) and congrí, which are merely two different ways to prepare rice and beans, two basic staples of Cuban cooking. Roast pork (lechón) or fried pork are also staples, as are yuca con mojo (boiled cassava root in a garlicky-citrusy sauce), ajiaco (a hearty root vegetable and beef soup) and tasajo (dried cured beef). Other popular dishes on the island are lobster in a hearty tomato sauce, known as langosta enchilada, and tamal en cazuela con mariscos, a corn meal stew with seafood. With just about any meal you can't forget to enjoy plantains prepared in a variety of ways as a side dish: green and fried, sweet and fried, and even boiled._x000D_
The Romantic Museum (Trinidad)
A world of beautiful and interesting artifacts.
Since 1808.
The Romantic Museum, located in the former Brunet Palace, can be found, just like the Architecture Museum, in the southern city of Trinidad. The building was erected in 1808 and belonged to one of the most powerful and influential families in Cuba. It mostly has works on display from 1830 to 1860, and shows rare objects such as a bed made of bronze and mother of pearl, a French wardrobe from 1852, a desk belonging to Maria Theresa of Austria and a glass display case from Meissen. You can also see fine China, porcelain and crystal belonging to some of the richest families from the Romantic period. This invaluable collection can be seen in 14 extensive halls. But once you’re done visiting this museum, don’t forget to take a stroll through the charming streets of Trinidad and get to know the coast of Cuba opposite Havana.
Architectural Museum (Trinidad)
This is the place if you want to learn more in depth about colonial architecture.
Island museums.
Trinidad, one of the most beautiful cities on the island of Cuba, is found on its southern coast and has played an important role in many of the country's historic events. In its downtown you will find the Museum of Architecture in a colonial home called Sánchez Sánchez (because it belonged to the families Sánchez Íznaga and Sánchez Cantero). It was originally two homes, but after an impressive remodeling project it became the one house you see now. The museum highlights the characteristics of colonial architecture, the most important architectural movement in Cuba, and indeed, on the entire continent.
City Museum
40 halls and plenty to see: sculptures, antique vehicles, military uniforms, etc.
Baroque to the max.
This interesting building, which is the former Palace of the Captains General, was built in 1770, making it one of the prime exponents of Cuban Baroque. Between 1899 and 1902 U.S. commanders had their residence here, and afterward it became the presidential palace for a time. It features furniture and other artifacts from the 19th century that depict some of the most important moments in Havana's history. You can find cars, military uniforms, sculptures such as the Giraldilla, the first statue cast in the city, and even a throne that back in its day awaited the visit of the Spanish monarch. You'll find this and much more in its 40 exhibition halls.
Vigía Farm (San Francisco de Paula)
The place where Hemingway found inspiration… and met his death.
For Whom The Bells Toll.
The Vigía Farm (Finca Vigía) was Ernest Hemingway's one and true permanent residence. Since 1940, up to his tragic death in 1961, he found the perfect retreat some 15 kilometers away from the Cuban capital, where he had the necessary solitude to write a great deal of his works. "For Whom the Bells Toll," "The Old Man and the Sea," "Across the River and Into the Trees" "A Moveable Feast," and "Islands in the Stream" are some of the works that the literary figure wrote on this 10-acre farm. Today it's a museum that pays homage to the winner of the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. The interior of his house, his popular bungalow, his tower and boat are all on display and open to the public at this location. Most importantly, his impressive library and study are open to the public as well.
Hotel Inglaterra
Beautiful on the inside, beautiful on the outside. Its beautiful style is a feast for the eyes.
A must visit.
Even though it's not a functioning museum, the Hotel Inglaterra houses such a vast amount of curiosities of historic and artistic significance, that it should be visited and examined as such. We're talking about the oldest hotel in Havana and on the whole island. Located in the heart of Havana, it opened its doors to the public in the year 1875 with a lovely façade reminiscent of the Belle Époque. It was especially popular during the 19th century, and today all the decorative features of the time are pretty much intact. In its interior the most interesting point is its bar, restaurant and terrace, all nicknamed "la sevillana" due to a decor that features a flamenco dancer. Make sure to look out the windows, too, as this National Monument offers some great views.
The Velázquez House (Santiago de Cuba)
What was once the home of Don Velázquez is now the perfect museum to understand the Cuban character.
Antique would be its best definition.
Welcome to the oldest house in Cuba! It was built in the year 1522 and served as home to the first governor of the island. It's also one of the oldest homes in the American continent. It basically stood unchanged until the 20th century. In the 60's it was restored, and in the 70's it was converted to the Museum of “Ambiente Historico de Cuba.” It's equipped with a series of curious displays that allow you to learn about Cuban life from the inside by showing you the idiosyncrasies of its people. Home artifacts and decorative elements are exhibited as visitors experience time periods from the 16th century up through the 19th – giving you an aesthetic sense from these times. It makes for a fascinating educational trip through the different historic, cultural and artistic movements the Caribbean island has lived through.
Air Museum
You'll see all manner of military aircraft honoring the Cuban revolution.
Historic memories come alive.
The show of military strength and power, as well as the constant reminder of historical events, are often used by the Cuban government to foster a sense of protection among the island's citizens. You'll see lots of items with a revolutionary theme throughout the city, not just in museums but also in almost every every aspect of life, reminding citizens of the efforts the revolution undertook to topple the previous government. This can be seen in the Air Museum and the several aircraft of great historic value that it houses. Among them is a Cessna 310 helicopter that Che Guevara himself used to move around the island during his tenure as minister of industry (before he left for Bolivia). You can also see the MI-4 helicopter used by Fidel Castro. In addition to all that you can see aircraft and related artifacts from military campaigns around the globe.
The Che Guevara Mausoleum (Santa Clara)

Plenty of charm and lots of history.
The City of Santa Clara, located in the center of the island, is home to the Che Guevara Memorial. In fact, this city has become a favorite destination for enthusiasts of the guerrilla war icon. The mausoleum was built in the 1980's but it wasn't until his remains were discovered in Bolivia that they were brought to this memorial in 1997. Under a giant statue of Che you will find all kinds of artifacts pertaining to him on display, including photographs, the clothes he wore on the field and even the medical supplies he used during his military campaigns. Take full advantage of the guerrilla theme in Santa Clara by also visiting the armored train that was taken over by revolutionaries and that today serves as a museum. The town of Santa Clara is one of the prettiest urban spaces on the island despite the absence of beaches, so we encourage you to tarry a bit and take a stroll. _x000D_
National Museum of Fine Arts
24 rooms featuring national and international art from different time periods.

The largest art museum in all of the Caribbean is comprised of two adjoining spaces located on the picturesque and popular Paseo Martí promenade, in the center of Havana. In its halls you can stroll through the arts of Cuba and all the world, a collection ranging from 500 B.C. to the present day. In addition to the soaring stained glass ceiling depicting Columbus' caravels, one of the most significant items you'll find is a painting by El Greco that is found in the hall containing Spanish art. You'll also find a work on canvas by Gainsborough and, of course, many curious pieces of Cuban pop art. In contrast, the second building is strictly a space dedicated to quintessentially Cuban art. Some of its biggest ambassadors have works on display here, including Guillermo Collazo, Rafael Blanco, Raúl Martínez and Wifredo Lam._x000D_
Museum of the Revolution
The Cuban Revolution marked a before and after in history.
This museum is truly a museum
The museum occupies the building that housed the Presidential Palace from its opening in 1920 to 1959. The building was conceived by the Cuban Carlos Mauirí and the Belgian Paul Belau. Its exterior harmoniously combines architectural trends in vogue in its time, emphasizing especially its volumes and forms. It shows a detailed history of the main moments in the struggle of the Cuban people throughout the twentieth century. Inside you will find photographs, weapons, documents, and objects related to different revolutionary actions. Outside is the Granma Memorial, which houses the Granma yacht in a huge glass urn. In it, Fidel, along with 82 expeditionaries from Tuxpan, landed on December 2, 1956 near Las Coloradas beach, marking the beginning of the last stage of the guerrilla struggle which culminated with the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959._x000D_
San Salvador de la Punta Castle
This austere building is an important part of Cuba's military history.

This fortress, along with La Fuerza and El Morro, makes up the group of military buildings that safeguarded the island of Cuba against attacks from invaders and pirates on the city of Havana. As a matter of fact, these three pillars appear on Cuba's coat of arms. In the case of this particular complex, the castle was built in the 16th and 17th centuries, but the construction project was shrouded in controversy. Getting the building off the ground cost a great amount of money, and as such the struggling population at the time was strongly opposed. In 1601 one of its four towers was even demolished. It was finally completed, but unlike its sister structures, this building was much more modest and Spartan, especially when it comes to its styling. Its mission was clear: to build a fortress that would help its neighbor El Morro, but without wasting public money._x000D_

The Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre is the patron saint of Cuba and legend has it that some Indian brothers went out in a canoe through the waters of Cayo Francés along with an Afro-Cuban child, when they found something floating in the sea. It was an image of the Virgin Mary with a board that read I am the Virgin of Charity. It is venerated daily and especially on September 8. The destination for this veneration is this Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre located about 20 kilometers from the city of Santiago de Cuba in the town of El Cobre. This enormous Catholic temple has been visited by the last popes and its enormous staircase sees pilgrims from all over the world go up and down every day who come to adore the virgin who takes her name from the mines around this place. This temple is one of the most important points on the entire island of Cuba.
Havana Cathedral
Art, history and lots of religion in the heart of Old Havana.
A Jesuit symbol.
In the year 1748 the Italian architect Borromini started construction on this cathedral that features towers of uneven width in a central plaza in Old Havana – since then known as Cathedral Plaza. This is how one of the most recognized examples of American Baroque architecture came to be – making it very significant throughout the continent. In fact, it’s one of the finest examples of Jesuit architecture. This was one of the most influential religious currents in the New World at that time, and its imprint is seen in this architectural gem. The exterior and interior are valued for the great number of works found in them, including a fresco by Giuseppe Perovani presiding over the church’s altar. Also this is the place where Christopher Columbus’s remains were kept until 1898, at which point they were supposedly transferred to Seville, sparking a controversy on the matter.
Castle of San Pedro de la Roca (Santiago de Cuba)

Located at the eastern end of the island, this enormous castle also known as the Morro de Santiago de Cuba is located on the southern coast of the island, guarding the maritime access to Santiago de Cuba, the first capital of the island between the years 1515 and 1607. At the top of its walls, the cannons that safeguarded the island from pirate invasions and other crowns still stand. This huge complex is part, together with the Socapa, the Advanced and the Star of one of the main military constructions in the Caribbean. Built during the European Renaissance era, it has remained as one of the military enclaves with the greatest architectural value in history... and also as one of the most beautiful corners of the island. If you are going to visit it, we recommend watching the sunset over its walls and the Caribbean Sea.
The José Martí monument
It's no coincidence that one of the most majestic monuments on the island is dedicated to one of its most revered heroes.
Centrally located and colossal.
"José Julián Martí Pérez was the most important politician and ideologue in Cuban history. Creator of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, he was the promoter of the so-called Necessary War or War of 1895, which defined the revolutionary political ideals of the island. A monument was erected to this Cuban national hero in the central Plaza de la Revolucion, a colossal construction 456 feet high visible from much of the city. Built during 1958, it shows the contemporary history of Cuba. On the ground floor the main precepts of the ideology of Martí are written, and we recommend that you make a point of reading it, as it describes a fundamental part of the history of the fifteenth and sixteenth century on the island and in the world. By the way, in the same place there is a observation deck no less than 423 feet up, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city"._x000D_

The San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress is another one of those military structures designed to protect the city from invasions and attacks. Cuba, just like the rest of the territories in the Americas, was a common destination for world powers that wanted supremacy over the continent. Since its discovery at the end of the 15th century, the island was invaded several times by the Spaniards, Dutch, French and British, as well as pirates and corsaires. This fortress was built by Carlos III to protect a "weak spot" along the coastline, thus protecting the Spanish Crown’s interests. It was also the building used by Che Guevara as barracks during the Cuban Revolution. Nowadays, in its interior you can find the Museum of Fortifications and Weapons (Museo de Fortificaciones y Armas) and the Che Guevara Cultural Center, focusing on one of the most influential figures in recent Cuban history. And by the way, you're standing in the largest fortress in all the Americas. _x000D_
Castle of the Royal Force of Havana
Legend aside, it's worth entering and getting to know this monument that currently houses the Navigation Museum.
There's no older place in Havana.
When you visit Havana you'll learn that the Spanish Crown built a great part of Cuba’s monuments during its years of rule over the island. This is the case of the Castle of the Royal Force of Havana. Located on one side of the beautiful Plaza de Armas, it's unique for being the oldest castle in all of the Americas. Built over the ruins of an old fortress in the mid-16th century, its tall tower is known as the "Torreón de la Espera," or "Tower of Wait." According to local lore, conquistador Hernando de Soto left his wife, Inés de Bobadilla, as governor of the island. Each day she would climb to the top of the tower in hopes of seeing her husband's ship return. He never made it back. The building is open to the public and currently houses the Navigation Museum._x000D_

Old Galician Center (Centro Gallego)
Bordering the renowned capitol is the Alicia Alonso Great Theater of Havana, the old “Centro Gallego.” Erected between 1907 and 1914, it's one of the most iconic buildings in the island. Its impressive neobaroque façade includes dramatic towers and four bronze statues that symbolize charity, education, music and theater. This building plays host to some of the biggest shows in Havana, such as the Havana Ballet Festival, among many others. Most showings are scheduled on weekends._x000D_
The Three Kings Morro Castle
It always protected the island from foreign invasions… until the English snuck in.
An architectural gem with panoramic beauty.
Between the years 1589 and 1630, under the rule of the Spanish crown on the island, Cuban authorities ordered a giant castle to be built at the entry point to one of Havana’s waterways that lead to the Atlantic. It was built very close to the waterfront area known as Havana’s “malecón.” The function of this fortress was clear: to protect the island from would-be invaders. It managed to do that, as it would suffer through countless invasion attempts from around the world. The French, the Dutch and the British all tried to enter the island, and this castle was one of the key points to defend it. However, in 1762, the British managed to take over. Later on in 1844 a lighthouse was added to the morro, which to this day serves to guide marine vessels. Nowadays the building serves as a maritime museum and offers one of the most panoramic views of the city. As you’ll see for yourself, the sights of the Atlantic Ocean alone make this an almost obligatory stop.

The Cuban Capitol is emblematic not only for its monumental architecture. Its luxuriously decorated spaces, its furnishings, its bronze statues, its oil paintings and stained glass windows, among other works of art by renowned Cuban and foreign artists, make the Capitol a wonderful and exceptional place to visit. It was built for the seat of the Legislature and, at the moment, it is the seat of the National Assembly of the Popular Power of Cuba. Inside, one of the tallest indoor bronze statues in the world greets you. You can also visit the Hall of Lost Steps and place yourself at kilometer zero of the Cuba's Central Highway._x000D_
Trinidad (Sancti Spíritus)

Located in the center of the island, this region used to be called the Villa de la Santísima Trinidad, a part of the province of Sancti Spíritus. Founded in 1514, this is one of the first seven Spanish towns founded in Cuba. Currently it has become one of the most important cities in the country, especially because of its cultural heritage. It's referred to as the Museum City of Cuba, and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. This is because it preserves its colonial buildings and homes practically intact, with its cobblestone streets and mansions belonging to wealthy families in the times of Diego Velázquez — city founder and settler and one of the most influential historic figures on the island. Experts believe he settled exactly where today you find the Museo Martí.
The Morro Lighthouse
Lights and history 60 feet above the ground, adorned by a picture-perfect setting.
Not just any lighthouse.
In front is the immense Atlantic Ocean, and behind it is the majestic Cuban capital. This is what you'll be able to see if you climb all 60 feet to the top of the Faro del Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro. There you will also see the lights that guide ships as they approach the Caribbean island. In fact the combination of lights it possesses and the order in which they flash helps mariners know the distance and position they should keep upon their approach with precision. The Morro Lighthouse has been there since 1848, built by the French long after the castle was built between the 16th and 17th centuries. It's one of the symbols of the city. Saturn's Cave
An incredible grotto found between Varadero and Havana. You'll marvel at its stalactites and stalagmites.

If we head toward Varadero from Havana, at about 12 kilometers from Matanzas we can take a detour to visit the Cueva de Saturno, in the town of Carbonera - also known as Cueva del Cepero. This prehistoric cave is not as well known among tourists, but it's one of the most magical places on the island, with a beautiful underground lake that's 60 feet deep, with water so pure and clean that you can see down to the bottom even though there is no sunlight. Its stalagmites and stalactites make up curious geometric shapes all along the way. It's a rare treat to contemplate the stalagmites that emerge from the bottom of the lake to reach the surface, serving as proof that this lake did not exist for many thousands of years.
Naranjo Bay (Holguín)
In this bay you'll find one of the most beautiful geographical formations in the area. Cameras, action!

Just like Varadero and Havana itself, the Bahía Naranjo National Park is located on the northern coast of the island, in the province of Holguín. This bay measures a bit more than four square kilometers and is one of the most interesting geographic wonders you can find on the island. The five keys that surround it have created a safe ecosystem that is dependent on the sea that feeds into it. That’s why it’s the preferred place for a variety of flora and fauna to subsist, as well as to go diving and snorkeling. Laguna Dorada is one of its highlights: its cove opens up as an entrance to thousands of acres of natural forest that are well worth exploring. This is where your trip would continue toward the area called Cuabal Costeros — a place with untold numbers of plant species. The entire park is one of the most important natural treasures on the island of Cuba.
Varadero (Matanzas)
Breathtaking beaches on the country's northernmost coast.

Eighty-seven miles from Havana, on the same coast, this paradise located in the province of Matanzas is the island's northernmost point. Expect the most beautiful and paradisiacal beaches you can find in all of Cuba: white sand and crystal clear waters, and not just for swimming, but also a multitude of marine activities: diving, snorkeling, jet skis, windsurfing and a long etcetera. It is true that most of its appeal is the beach; however, there are other places to visit. We recommend Casa Dupont or Casa de las Américas, Bellamar Cave, Saturno Cave, and very close, south of Matanzas, the Zapata Swamp._x000D_
The Christ of Havana
A Cuban icon that seems to tirelessly protect the island's inhabitants.
He presides over La Cabaña.
This Christ statue is perhaps the most symbolic on the entire island. Sculpted by Jilma Madera and shipped over from Rome, this work of art was blessed by Pope Pius XII before being sent to Cuba. It was made of Carrara marble, the same type of marble utilized for the construction of the Colón cemetery in the Vedado neighborhood, also in the capital. The statue measures 65 feet in height plus 10 more feet for the base, and rises over the hill at La Cabaña fortress in Casa Blanca, right on the Bay of Havana. It was erected at this location on Christmas Eve 1958 and was inaugurated on the 8th of January of 1959._x000D_
The Sierra Maestra (Granma and Santiago de Cuba)

The Sierra Maestra covers the eastern provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba, making it the most important mountain range on the island. Its highest point is the Pico Real del Turquino, which rises almost 6500 feet above sea level. It's true that this elevation is not excessively high, but in its interior lays several exotic gems that you'll only find on the island. A visit here is geared toward adventure travelers, with wonders such as the waterfall at the Brazo de Buey River, which makes it an idyllic place to see a river flow into a natural awe-inspiring lake. You'll also find the so-called Gran Piedra. Its name means the great rock, and just as its name implies, we're talking about a giant rock that has become one of the most spectacular observation towers on the island and is a protected natural landscape._x000D_
The Christopher Columbus Cemetery

Tombs and prayer in El Vedado
In 1854 Governor Marqués de Pezuela, one of the most important in the city’s history, ordered the construction of this cemetery. Located in the corner of calzada de Zapata and 12th Street, it's the best-known spot in Havana's Vedado neighborhood. Currently it occupies 140 acres, and all along it you’ll find architecture and sculptures that have turned it not just into a Cuban national monument, but the second most important cemetery in the world. Getting to admire its enormous entrance alone makes it worth your visit. Calixto de Loria erected it, and its tragic story resulted in this architect being the first person to be interred there. You can also find the man who was buried standing up and other macabre but real stories. The watchful eye of the Virgin of La Caridad del Cobre, the patron saint of the island, protects the entire property.
The Malecón
The fascinating part about a trip down the Malecón is the mixture of architectural styles and abandoned buildings you will find.
Eight beautiful kilometers
A ride or walk along any of the 8 kilometers that make up the Malecón is one of the most beautiful trips you'll take along the island's coast. Cubans and tourists, writers, musicians and artists of all kinds frequent it. It's one of the island's best-kept treasures. Construction started in 1901, and the mixture of neoclassical styles and subsequent Art Nouveau kept adding kilometers to the stretch that originally comprised this waterfront promenade. But it's not really architecture that makes it so special; its resistance to change despite the passage of time is what makes it unique. The vast collection of impressive buildings that line this walkway and road put up with the relentless lashings of the Atlantic Ocean's waters at their base. The Real Fuerza de la Habana Castle, the San Salvador de la Punta Castle and the Torreón de San Lázaro are some of these iconic buildings that watch over the Malecón, which is one of the most frequented thoroughfares in Havana._x000D_

Old Havana, as the historic center of the Cuban capital is known, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the 7 Wonders of the World as listed by the New Seven Wonders Foundation. The Buena Vista Social Club
It's incredible how a documentary can revive a long-forgotten music group.

During the 1920's and 1930's Havana enjoyed an effervescent musical scene that took over the entire city. With dancing and music styled after native genres, it gave birth to a host of high-quality musicians and venues. Among them is the Buena Vista Social Club, located between 46th and 48th Streets in the Cuban capital. In the 90's Ry Cooder popularized this movement all over again with the namesake documentary that turned into a band touring the world over, offering recitals and recording music that will go down in the annals of history. The place didn't reopen but it did put the history of many talented musicians back in the spotlight._x000D_
The Bertolt Brecht Café Theater
Could there be any better nightlife activity around? Enjoy concerts to the rhythm of mojitos, daiquiris and rum.

This theater is a favorite among the nightlife offerings found in this city. Even though it's a small space, it's one of the favorite stages where young Cubans go to listen to local musical acts. In fact, some of the best Cuban acts play on this stage on a daily basis. There's plenty of Cuban musicians that visit this stage but also many acts from around the world with all kinds of musical styles. It's also the ideal place to enjoy typical Cuban cocktails: mojitos, daiquiris and different rums until the wee hours of the night._x000D_
Indian's Cave (Pinar del Río)

Travel through prehistoric Cuba.
In the western part of the island you'll find one of the most intriguing excursions on the island. We're talking about the Cueva del Indio (Indian Cave), a prehistoric cavern in the Viñales Valley. The whole area known as El Nicho de Cienfuegos is a natural extension with impressive areas in which to discover the flora and fauna of the island amidst huge and beautiful waterfalls that create a true natural paradise. It's true that a great part of tourism in Cuba focuses on its endless and breathtaking beaches, such as Varadero, but inland you can also find incomparable natural and cultural beauty as well. A perfect example is the Viñales valley at the westernmost tip of the island, but inland at the Sierra de los Órganos, in the Guaniguanico mountain range. The scenery created by its karstic mountains is startling and unique to the area. By the way, these are the so-called mogotes, Its ecosystem hosts a variety of flora and fauna native to the island that play a crucial role in preserving the island's natural heritage. A historic train
An important part of the history of the Cuban revolution took place on this train. On December 29, 1958, commander Ernesto Ché Guevara and 18 other revolutionary combat soldiers used a bulldozer and a few homemade incendiary devices and managed to stop this armored train. This was key because, from here, events developed in favor of the revolutionary army and two days later the Cuban revolution triumphed on January 1, 1959. Today you can visit the interior of this interesting train, where you are told all about this historical fact in great detail. The excavator is also exposed, as part of the history of those days._x000D_
Turquino National Park (Granma)
Check out native flora and fauna in its natural state. This will be an unforgettable hike.
Heading South.
The Turquino National Park is located on the southeastern side of the island, in the heart of the Sierra Maestra mountains. Here the island's highest point, the Pico Real de Turquino rises 6500 feet above sea level. It's true that it's not an excessive altitude, but the silver lining here is that you can hike it by foot for a visit that is both historically and environmentally significant. Its ecosystem houses many species of animals and plants endemic to the Caribbean island, such as a type of pine tree that can only be found in this part of Cuba. A rich variety of Caribbean fauna can be found throughout the park. For nature lovers, it's a fascinating visit. For history buffs, the Sierra Maestra is considered the cradle of the Cuban Revolution, and as you travel around these parts you will find many historical references. _x000D_
The Latin American Stadium
Baseball is Cuba's national sport. It's only logical the city includes a stadium dedicated to this game.
Batter up!
The giant Estadio Latinoamericano is also known as the Coloso del Cerro (Colossus of the Hill), and it's dedicated to baseball. This stadium’s construction took place in 1946, before the triumph of the Revolution. After a massive renovation that took place in the 70's it went on to become a national symbol and the official stadium of the Industriales baseball team. It also serves as the headquarters for the National Baseball Commission. Baseball is the most watched and played sport by Cubans, and each time a game is played at this stadium its 55,000 seats are filled. Also known as El Latino by its neighbors, this stadium plays host to major sporting games and cultural events. Make sure to check out its schedule, because you might be able to attend one of its events during your visit to Cuba._x000D_
The Templete on Plaza de Armas
Even though that's not its real name, everyone knows it as "El Templete." Leaving without snapping a photo here would be a sin.
Nicknamed with love.
Once you find this place, upon first sight you'll be surprised. The so-called Templete, located on the Plaza de Armas in Old Havana, has been one of the most influential for the island from an architectural point of view. It was built in the year 1827, as part of a project by Captain General Francisco Dionisio Vives. What makes the building interesting is its neoclassic style, with six Doric columns imitating a Greek temple, alluding to the importance of Greco-Latin culture in the new continent. Every 16th of November, hundreds or thousands of Havana's residents flock to this monument to commemorate the founding of their city. They walk three times around the ceiba, a tropical tree deemed sacred in Santeria (the Afrocuban religion that mixes African and Catholic beliefs), and they toss a coin into the air as they ask for a wish. The legend has it that your wish will come true before the end of the year._x000D_

This street offers a wide variety of familiar stores of all types and colors.
A heavily commercial area.
Centrally located in Old Havana, Obispo Street is one of the most important streets to know if shopping is your thing. It ends at the Plaza de Armas square, and along the way you'll find a great variety of shops. Many are very small but charming family businesses that sell crafts or items related to Cuban culture. There are music stores, bookstores, galleries that sell paintings and antiques, etc. In each one the shop keepers will happily offer you a detailed explanation of the products they sell, of life on the island and of life itself! That's just how Cubans are. _x000D_
La Estrella Town (Cayo Santa María, Santa Clara)
Controversial place that generates as many passions as hatred, perhaps a good part of its charm resides in this dilemma.

As for this place, opinions are divided. Some people think that it is the last Cuban attempt to have a shopping center in the European way. Some people think, instead, that it is just a commercial trick to deceive tourists. The truth is that this artificial town has built a whole complex of shops, restaurants, parks and tourist-oriented promenades (that is undeniable). But the place has great charm and you may like to walk through its streets or stop to eat in one of its establishments. In fact, it is a different way to spend the day and get to know another part of the island. The offer of shops is the same as in the rest of the island but it is true that it does not have the charm of being unique and authentic like the small Havana businesses. What there is no doubt about is that it is a different place. Now the decision is in your hands.
The Guardalavaca Market
An interesting shopping experience in an area that’s much less touristy, and much more authentic. Sounds good, no?

If you find yourself visiting the Guardalavaca area, by all means visit this market, as places like this often paint an authentic portrait of what society is like in Cuba and the cultures that reside in its different regions. Because Guardalavaca is much less visited than Varadero or Havana, it's much less touristy and a more legitimate experience. You'll find proof of this in the locals that frequent the Guardalavaca Market to shop for themselves. You'll find items with motifs that depict popular Cuban society, as well as those that depict Pre-Columbian culture on the island. When it comes to fine leatherwork, this is the place to shop.

Want to take a beautiful stroll down the Avenida del Puerto? Head over to Almacenes San José, and seal the deal with some shopping after your walk.

You could think of this sprawling covered market on Avenida del Puerto as a kind of shopping center, Cuban-style. You will find a great variety of stands with all manner of products that are sold in Cuba, from arts and crafts to food and drink. If you want to take home an edible souvenir of the island, this is the place for you. For a double bonus, come on foot along the Avenida del Puerto, a beautiful stretch of road that runs along the picturesque bay front, offering up unforgettable views of the old fortresses and the impressive Christ of Havana._x000D_
