Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (The Museum of Contemporary Art)
A building full of art collections and architectural surprises that are not to be missed.
Grand artistic quality.
Art lovers are in luck on their visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico as it's surprising that a relatively small city is home to many quality collections of artistic disciplines. The 'Museo de Arte Contemporáneo' has been open since the 1980s, although its present headquarters, which is the 'Edificio Histórico Rafael M. Labra', opened its doors to the public in 2002. The first surprise that you'll find is the contrast between the ancient Georgian arches of the original building from the beginning of the 20th century, with a glass cover in its inner patio that is suspended over eight enormous steel columns. There’s an interesting collection on exhibition here from Puerto Rican, Caribbean and Latin American artists of the mid 20th century onwards, as well as works by emigrated artists who the Museum supports with international exchange programmes and a Documentation Centre with film and printed materials on contemporary art.

An amazing natural phenomenon.
If you want to experience an authentic Puerto Rican adventure, check the lunar calendar and book a date on a darker night so that you can delve into the experience of the Bioluminescent Bay at Vieques Island from Fajardo. The bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon in which the sea emits iridescent cold light reflections, as if your canoe was going through fluorescent waters due to a high concentration of microorganisms which cause that glow. Vieques Island, situated 10 kilometres from Puerto Rico off-shore, is known for being home to the so-called 'Puerto Mosquito' (Mosquito Port), where you can rent kayaks with guides who explain the bioluminescence phenomenon during a night tour. It's best to go during a night when there's no full moon and for the brave people, they can swim in its dark waters to check how the body lights up.

It’s interesting that Puerto Rico has a long sporting history and few years of playing 'soccer', which has always been known as 'football' around here. The 'Estadio Sixto Escobar' has become an essential attraction in San Juan if you're interested in big sports events. Since its opening in the 1930s, it became a cathedral for baseball, basketball and boxing, due to the American influence, and even became considered to be the Madison Square Garden of Puerto Rico. Among the anecdotes of this place, which you can read about in the 'Museo-Biblioteca del Pabellón de la Fama del Deporte Puertorriqueño (Museum/Library of the Puerto Rican Sport Hall of Fame), are the triumphs of the famous Puerto Rican Boxer 'Sixto Escobar', who knocked out his opponents in the world championship that was held in this stadium, and a tribute to him stands at the entrance of this stadium in the form of a statue.
Cayo Icacos (Icacos Island)
Paradisiacal islands which will delight lovers of snorkelling, scuba diving or underwater photography.
A natural resort.
The Cayo Icacos natural resort is an archipelago of almost virgin Islands that are perfect for lovers of scuba diving and snorkelling, underwater photography or trips by boat to deserted beaches of white sand and turquoise waters, although it's not so deserted at weekends. It’s part of the 'Reserva Natural Cayos de la Cordillera' (Cayos de la Cordilla Natural Reserve), with extraordinary aquatic fauna, and it can be reached from Fajardo pier, which is 24 kilometres from San Juan, where any fisherman will offer to plough through the coral reefs and get you closer to the islands, although there are also tourist catamarans that offer this service. There are no beach bars or cleaning service on 'Cayo Icacos', so you must take water and food with you if you are going to spend a relaxing day on the island, and remember to take back any litter you might have to avoid contaminating the environment.

Travelling athletes and the hyperactive people who can't spend a day without going out for a run, also have their perfect space: San Juan Central Park, a macro installation for sports and leisure in the urban area, which is close to 'Avenida Roberto H. Todd' (Roberto H. Todd Avenue). Here you can enjoy large areas of grass, playgrounds, a barbecue area, kiosks and most of all, 17 tennis courts, two squash courts, an athletics track, bike trail, football pitch, gym and even a port where you can practice kayaking and canoeing. Recently, only the locals can enjoy the new swimming pools or 'Natatorium', but you may want to check if they have now made it accessible for tourists. There is a mass influx of people when the sun sets, so if you can practice sport at another time, you’ll find that it will be less busy.
Playa Luquillo (Luquillo Beach)
Sshhh! Do you hear it? It's the waves breaking accompanied by birds cheeping. An indescribable soundtrack.
Music for your ears.
If there’s a place where you only hear the noise of sea waves and birds in the foliage of the palm grove, that place is Luquillo Beach, also known as the spa of 'La Monserrate'. This enclave, which is only half an hour from San Juan, is one of the four Blue Flag coastal points in the country, where amenities and good conditions of the beach (with a camping area, baths, kiosks, shaded areas) are complemented with very calm and crystal clear water, where you can practice snorkelling or kayaking, among other marine sports. The local custom is to go with your own baskets of homemade food, although the nearby beach bars can also offer to feed you. Due to the lack of waves or tides, this makes it an ideal destination for a day at the beach with children and it's just a few metres from the natural enclave of 'El Yunque'.
Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot (The José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum)
A controversial name for the country's largest stadium.
This place accommodates up to 18,500 people!
One of the contemporary monuments of greater international projection is the architecture of the 'Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot', which opened its doors in September 2004. Its name - José Miguel Agrelot, which is the name of a Puerto Rican celebrity comedian, was surrounded by controversy because they wanted to pay homage to a cultural reference of the country but by law, the reference couldn't be a living person. It turned out that, Agrelot died shortly before the inauguration and they were able to use his name as a tribute. The Coliseum is the biggest indoor arena in the country with a capacity of 18,500 people and it's located on the Golden Mile of San Juan with easy access via public transport. The initial objective of this project was the 2004 Olympics, which finally took place in Athens. Lastly, most of its revenues generate from shows, concerts and mass entertainment.
Estatua de Ponce de León (The Statue of Ponce de León)
An honorary monument to 'Juan Ponce de León'. Another Puerto Rican must-see.
A vigilant statue.
The Conqueror and first Governor of Puerto Rico, Juan Ponce de León, has a monument in his honour, which is an ancient statue that watches the streets from ‘la plaza de San José’ (San Jose Square) and is located in Old San Juan. The discoverer appears with his characteristic beard of the 16th century, his hat with a feather on one side, boots up to his mid-thighs, pauldrons, iron chainmail and one hand that points to infinity with the other rested on his hips. 'Ponce de León' lived for a time in San Juan with his family and prospered at the expense of exploiting the Taino tribe on their cassava farms. However, he continued to explore the Caribbean and reached the area of Florida in search of the fountain of eternal youth, but oddly enough, a poisoned arrow killed him instead as he fought against the native Indians.

A tribute to the night of 30th April, 1797.
Tradition has it that, on the night of 30th April 1797, the inhabitants of the city of San Juan took out all the religious objects that they had onto the streets such as, crosses, lockets, candles and torches, in order to pray and ask for the Spanish fortress to resist the British siege that was about to invade the city. The English generals saw hundreds of torches moving down and mistook them for armed reinforcements for the defensive lines, which is why they quickly retreated and the city was saved. This monument captures this historic event known as 'La Rogativa' or ‘La Procesión’ (The Procession), which is located in 'la plaza del Viejo San Juan' (Old San Juan Square) and represents the citizens who went out that night to pray. It's well worth a walk around at sunset to enjoy the views over the Bay from here.
Castillo San Felipe del Morro (Fort San Felipe del Morro or Morro Castle)
You'll feel like a real Spanish soldier of 500 years ago as you walk by these incredible walls.
250 years of construction!
The construction of Fort 'San Felipe del Morro' (which refers to the "morro" as the protrusion of land above the sea), took nothing more and nothing less than 250 years for Spanish engineers who wanted to strengthen the construction with six-metre thick walls, which enabled a defence from seaborne enemy attacks. The first structure dates back to 1539, although it didn't end until the mid-eighteenth century. During this time, it suffered constant attacks by English pirates and Dutch fleets, but the final attack was in 1898 when American warship fire destroyed its lighthouse, which was subsequently replaced. The visit to 'Castillo San Felipe del Morro' includes a walk by the same walls that the Spanish soldiers used to guard almost 500 years ago, the watchtowers where the sentinels spent the long lost hours, and the cannons which they aimed at the bay.

One of the most interesting contemporary monuments in San Juan is called 'Tótem Telúrico' and this is a work by the Puerto Rican artist Jaime Suárez, which is made of ceramic pieces with black granite and was built in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World. Located in the square ‘Plaza del Quinto Centenario’, the 12-metre tall Tótem is the symbol of pro-Indian roots of American villages, representing the Taino origin in particular and created by this multitalented artist who, after having trained to become an architect, developed a large part of his career in the ceramic world of great dimensions, as well as sculpture, painting and even stage design. The 'Tótem Telúrico' is framed in a refreshing square with water fountains that emerge from the ground and it unites villagers and tourists, children and adults who all come to spend a pleasant and leisurely afternoon, cooling themselves down in the water during the hot periods.
Catedral de San Juan Bautista (The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista)

Interesting and ancient.
Stories tell that the mummified remains of the discoverer and conqueror of Puerto Rico, Juan Ponce de León, lie in the ancient Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, which was originally built in 1521. It’s believed to be the second oldest Cathedral in America after the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, and one of the first American schools (it is still currently under North American jurisdiction), since the first free Puerto Rican school for children was where the Church stands today. The first headquarters in the cathedral was built using wood and a thatched roof, but these materials didn't survive the tropical storms and so it was necessary to completely reconstruct the building in stone. The cathedral that you can visit today is a result of the continuous restorations from having suffered severe weather and looting by invaders.
Palacio de Santa Catalina (Santa Catalina Palace)
Constructed in the heart of San Juan Bay, you'll instantly distinguish its shape. Once inside, you'll love its history.
Built in the 16th century.
On the shore of San Juan Bay, you’ll recognize the silhouette of the 'Palacio de Santa Catalina', also known as 'la Fortaleza' (The Fortress), which was commissioned by the Spanish King Carlos I, who was sick of pirates and enemies coming in from the sea to loot. Since its construction in the mid-16th century until now, not only has it served as a coastal defence system, but also as a watchtower from the high 'Torre de Mando' (Control Tower), and later as the Puerto Rican Governor's residence, where he needed to prepare the area for housing and gardens. In the mid-19th century, its military appearance was changed in order to become presidential headquarters, where the last Spanish Governor struck a grandfather clock with his sword, marking the exact time of day when Puerto Rico lost against the U.S. invasion.
Fuerte San Cristóbal (San Cristóbal Fort)
Coincide your visit to the fort on the third Sunday of the month and you'll be amazed at the historic weapons firing drill!
Spanish vigour.
When eighteenth-century Spanish rulers ordered to build the Fort or Castle of San Cristóbal, they didn’t consider an invasion by sea, but rather a possible entry by land, which would leave them unprotected. That was how this fort started, which was built on an original wall in 1783 and declared a World Heritage Site two hundred years later. The Spaniards' suspicions were founded since they checked the defensive success of 'Fuerte San Cristóbal' as they drove back an attack of 7,000 British soldiers in 1791. If your visit to the fort coincides with the third Sunday of the month, you can watch the historic weapons firing drill that completes this interesting visit to the castle, which includes passageways, tunnels, artillery posts, watchtowers and audiovisual displays with models and examples of the uniforms and weapons of the period. It’s a complete virtual tour through the operation of the fort.
Capilla del Cristo (Christ’s Chapel)
Its structure dates back to 1751 and it's one of the most mysterious and religious in Puerto Rico.
Legends and miracles.
Legend has it that 'Capilla del Cristo', which dates back to midway through the 18th century, was constructed in honour of the supposed miracle that saved the life of a horseman. Apparently, the young man participated in a horse race along the street of ‘calle del Cristo’, and as he couldn't stop at the end, he fell off the cliff. Some versions claim that his faith and his prayers managed to miraculously save his life and that this chapel was built in gratitude. Other versions say that the guy died and that the 'Capilla del Cristo de la Salud' was built to block the way in order to prevent any more falls in the future. Either way, this small religious spot is shrouded in mystery and Puerto Rican tradition kept within its original structure that was built in 1751, although it's now currently out of use.

If you want to travel back in time and get to know how colonial America looked like in the 16th century, one of the best preserved places with the same architecture and cobblestones from back then is the area of Old San Juan, the old part of the town in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It’s located on San Juan Island, which is connected to the main island of Puerto Rico by roads and bridges. This tourist enclave has its own value due to the different coloured colonial mansions that line its picturesque cobbled streets, but here you'll also find most of the city's museums, monuments and souvenir shops. If you are travelling with young children and they get tired of walking, there's a free public transport service in the area of Old San Juan offering you a comfortable visit.

60 kilometres from San Juan.
Shopaholics should think twice about going in the 'Premium Outlets de Barceloneta', and if they do, perhaps they should leave their credit card. The district of Barceloneta is located at 60 kilometres from San Juan, but it's worth the journey if you're looking for a large shopping centre. Following the trend of the United States, Puerto Rico has also opted for the concentration of major brands in one place with amazing discounts, as well as neocolonial architecture painted in loud colours. Here you'll find daily offers on fashion, jewellery, accessories, shoes, trends or even gifts and traditional handicrafts, but it's in your interest to check the base to see if there's a 'made in China' sticker. As a large shopping centre, there are also fast food chains, traditional cuisine restaurants and even multicinemas.
Plaza Las Américas (Las Américas Square)
Without any doubt, it's the second largest shopping centre in Latin America and will not leave you indifferent.

Located in the area of 'Hato Rey', where sugar cane farms were spread out at the beginning of the 20th century and were then later turned into a dairy farm, stands the 'Plaza Las Americas' shopping centre', which is one of the largest and oldest of the Caribbean. Its doors opened to the public in the 1960s and it's been evolving and expanding its premises since then to become the second largest in Latin America, with two of its own police stations and even a fire brigade inside the centre. But the really interesting thing about this place is the wide range of shops and brands where you can spend a whole day of shopping. For a break between the shops, you can enjoy local and international cuisine at more than 40 restaurants, or watch a film in any of its 13 auditoriums.
Galería Botello (Botello Gallery)
An artistic example for all seekers of exotic pieces.
The Caribbean Gauguin.
The former home of the Hispanic/Puerto Rican artist Ángel Botello, (who emigrated with his family from Galicia to Haiti and then on to Puerto Rico at the beginning of the 20th century), has become a reference for art dealers and collectors in search of signed exotic pieces by the new artists of San Juan. Ángel Botello, who is considered to be the Gauguin of the Caribbean, is honoured in this place with a large sample of his work, as well as exhibiting national and international artists. The Gallery occupies the family colonial mansion with over 300 years of history, and it's located in 'calle del Cristo' (Christ’s Street), with its whitewashed walls which highlight the colourful paintings of contemporary Puerto Rican art. In this house/gallery, you'll find art exhibitions, an important collection of old carvings of wooden saints and you can buy paintings, photographs, lithographs, ceramics and sculptures which are made of iron and copper.

Banana ketchup.
If you like Puerto Rican food, you must keep in mind that you possibly won't find their native spices back home, not even in gourmet shops. For that reason, or if you want to give an original gift, it's worth visiting the shop 'Las Arcadas' - Spicy Caribbee, specialized in attractive Caribbean flavourings, including 'ketchup de banana' (banana ketchup). The great advantage is that they let you try their products there on the spot, so you know exactly what you'll be getting. If you test the sauce known as 'Fuego' (Fire) and your eyes fill up with tears, the sales assistants will run back with a teaspoon of jam to relieve you of the hot and spicy taste. You'll also find a large variety of Puerto Rican coffee, vanilla and traditional honey for sale. If you don't think your purchases will arrive safely inside your suitcase, you can request that they send your goods in the post, and they will take care of everything.

Handmade guaranteed.
Lovers of traditional art and manufacturers of ethnic origin shouldn't settle for any bric-a-brac that's not certified as an original Puerto Rican piece. In the Puerto Rican Art & Crafts shop, which is located on 'calle Fortaleza' (Fotaleza Street), you have the guarantee that the craftspeople are Puerto Rican and that they are inspired by ancestral techniques of the Taino culture or new innovative trends of new ceramic art. As well as the souvenirs that you give as gifts after your trip, you can also find jewellery made of iron and steel that resemble ancient indigenous ornaments, tribal masks, dolls and other objects which are always hand made and even vintage style maps of Puerto Rico. If you want to know more about an object, you can always ask the owners so that the craftsperson can get in touch with you to explain what inspired them or to let you know what your little work of art symbolizes.
Plaza del Mercado (Market Square)
Depending on the time of day when you come to this square, you'll see different scenarios, which are all equally charming.
Santurce Market.
The 'Plaza del Mercado', also known as the 'Placita de Santurce' which can be accessed by 'calle Dos Hermanos' (Dos Hermanos Street), is swarmed by visitors both during the day and at night, and has different items on offer for every occasion. In the mornings, you can wander around the traditional market stalls where farmers voice the lowest prices of their fruit and vegetables, accompanied by the music of some street musician who takes advantage of the good turnout of people and cigarette traders. In the restaurants that border the 'Plaza del Mercado', you can try traditional recipes such as the 'alcapurrias' (stuffed croquettes) or the 'bacalaíto' (crispy fried cod). And when night falls, this place is reconverted into the main place of dancing, 'shots' and a party between karaokes and salsa music, so if you want to have a few drinks and listen to some live music, this is your place.
The Poet's Passage

An emblematic building.

The Poet's Passage, which is located on ‘calle Cruz’ (Cruz Street) of Old San Juan, is inspired by good taste and elegance as soon as you enter the door and go into their world of poetry, literature and art. The touristic 'calle del Cristo' doesn't only mean a walk by the picturesque colonial architecture of San Juan, which is home to some of the main monuments in the city such as 'Capilla del Cristo' (Christ's Chapel). It's also one of the commercial centres of the city, where trees that offer shade and beach bars where you can buy ice creams, turn this boulevard into a pleasant way to spend a day of shopping. The paved promenade alternates historic colonial buildings with big names in fashion, and art galleries with ancient residences. Even though it's a steep street that may be tiring to walk, it's worth it for the atmosphere and the bustle of tourists and locals who browse the shop windows and decide to enter from time to time. Don't miss the pigeons that fly over the street and the heads of the people who pass by.

Since 2003, Ena Mestey selects and sells unusual pieces of Puerto Rican handicraft in her shop 'Arte & Máscaras' (Art & masks), located on ‘calle San Francisco’ (San Francisco Street) in Old San Juan. Her passion for Taino culture and the fabrication in regions such as Ponce and Laína means that your purchases in this spot will become a kind of history. It's worth visiting with enough time in order to consult her books and knowledge of pre-Hispanic culture. You'll not only find masks of mysterious shapes and colours, but also an explanation of their context, such as which Indigenous tribe made them, what they mean and what rituals and symbols are hidden behind an apparent gift. 'Artes & Máscaras' has specialized in objects made of ceramics, wood, or papier mache if you are looking for a decorative keepsake, or prints and mass-produced original drawings by Puerto Rican artists.
Casa-Museo Felisa Rincón (Felisa Rincón House/Museum)

One of the icons of female recognition who revolutionized the Puerto Rican high society at the beginning of the 20th century, Felisa Rincón de Gautier, Doña Fela, now has a house/museum with the souvenir and tribute to her work as philanthropist and first mayoress of San Juan; the post which she took on for more than 20 years. In addition to being a pharmacist, dressmaker and politician, Doña Fela was a defender of women's rights and people without resources, who continues to support through her foundation today, 20 years after she passed away. The house/museum, which is located opposite the 'Puerta de San Juan' monument, can only be visited by prior request and the objects that you'll find inside are furniture, historical documentation and photographs of this public figure. The centre also serves as the organization of conferences, workshops and exhibitions that continue the work of Doña Fela.

The black influence in Puerto Rico.
If there was something that marked the beginning of Puerto Rico as a nation, it wasn't only the Spanish colonization, but the shipping of enslaved Africans to work in the newly discovered lands. The 'Museo de Nuestra Raíz Africana' which is located at the 'Casa de los Contrafuertes' (House of the Buttress) in Old San Juan, is a tribute and tour for the black influence that was the origin of interbreeding and cultural exchange and enriched the Puerto Rican population. Through its exhibition halls, you follow the traumatic journey of the slaves who left Africa from the16th century; the voyage by boat, their traditional influences like their masks and musical instruments that were made of wood which the local indigenous people copied later; documents that testify that migratory movement and their subsequent integration in life and the socio-cultural exchanges of Puerto Rico, as proven by the fusion of its population.

One of the 13 buildings that formed the Municipal Hospital medical complex in 1920, has been converted into a national and international example of Puerto Rican art: The ‘Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico’, which is located in the district of Santurce and opened its doors in the year 2000 with artistic works in its permanent collection ranging from the 16th century to today, although the successive expansions have added more temporary exhibition rooms, educational workshops, research programmes, and even interaction with the public in a multimedia art gallery that you can not miss. The Museum is located in an idyllic enclave which is formed by a large 'Jardín Botánico Escultórico' (Botanical/Sculptural Garden), and is home to 15 outdoor sculptures by Puerto Rican artists, more than 160,000 plants and 26 species of trees that surround its artificial pond with Koi fish and aquatic plants.

Without anything of an ethnocentric vision, the 'Museo de las Américas' has been dedicated to documenting the culture and history of the American continent from Patagonia to Alaska, since 1992. Located in the area of Old San Juan, in the building known as 'Cuartel de Ballaja', this museum has several permanent exhibitions such as the 'Artes populares' (folk) room, that collects American Indian traditional arts from furniture to ceramics and religious rituals; the 'Herencia Africana' (African heritage) room, which compares African crafts with their heirs in the American continent; 'El indio en América' (The Indian in America), which pays tribute to the 22 surviving ethnic groups of the colonization, and a separate section on life, culture and post-invasion Spanish art. In addition, the museum also organizes temporary thematic exhibitions that complete the collection, so it's best to visit this museum with plenty of time to explore it.
Museo de Antropología, Arte e Historia (The Museum of Anthropology, Art and History)
Its impressive Antillean archaeology is a one-of-a-kind collection in the Caribbean.
Since 1951.
Long before foreigners came to the island and even before the colonization began, Puerto Rico was inhabited by cultures with ancestral roots that can be seen nowadays with free access in the 'Museo de Antropología, Arte e Historia de la Universidad' in the district of 'Rio Piedras'. Apparently, there isn't another collection of Antillean archaeology in the whole Caribbean like the one preserved in this museum, which opened in 1951. Its exhibition of colourful paintings, ceramics, numismatics and jewellery are attached to interesting researches which are carried out at sites in Puerto Rico, like the one that brought the remains of the pre-Columbian Taíno culture to light for the first time; a culture which made their tools for hunting, fishing and decoration out of bone, stone and snail shells, as displayed by their jewellery and ornaments.

A historical and mysterious tour.
As if time would have stopped in 1521, The White House of Old San Juan is a mysterious visit that you can't miss. It hides much of the island's history as a fortified enclosure of the defensive era, with extraordinary views over the bay. Stories tell that the descendants of the conqueror and first governor, Juan Ponce de León, had lived here for more than 250 years among its gardens and whitewashed walls. In actual fact, Ponce de Leon never lived here because he died before entering, but his children and descendants lived here under its emblazoned coat of arms and stone lions, until the 18th century. In the 1970s, it was declared as a monument and open to the public, where you can visit the rooms, kitchen, study, dining room, and even a throne that is reported to have been for the viceroys when they came to visit.

Would you like to know how the life of a family on the island would have been in the 18th century? The ‘Casa de la Familia Puertorriqueña’ means a trip to the past when you cross the mansion gates. It was built in the 17th century and destined to be the observation of the traditional customs, furniture and the lifestyle of a wealthy family of San Juan since the 1960s. The mahogany furniture, paintings and half illuminated ornaments testify that the families donated their goods for this open exhibition. All these reflect the lives of traders who opened their businesses in the lower floor and lived with their families in the top floor, where you can stroll through their accommodation from the master bedroom to the master's office; the sewing room, nanny room and the games room, among others.

If you're travelling with little ones and you want them to learn in a fun way, you'll find the perfect place to spend a morning in the city: The ‘Museo del Niño’, which is located in front of the cathedral in Old San Juan. As a curiosity, it has to be mentioned that the project started at the end of the 1980s with a meagre budget of $100 and a lot of voluntary work, until it could open its doors in 1993. The museum can now maintain its three-storey building of fun activities with its sale of entrance tickets alone and has become a space, which is designed to encourage the curiosity and creativity of younger children. The Museum contains crafts and painting workshops to musical activities, home gardening and raises awareness of the environment, health and biodiversity.
El Yunque
Don't forget your cagoule! You're going to visit one of the rainiest places in the world!
Rain forest.
As an island that is characterized by its microclimates and contrasts, you can't miss a visit to the 'Bosque Pluvial El Yunque' (El Yunque Rain Forest), another one of Puerto Rico's natural attractions. Located on the eastern side of the Luquillo Mountain Range, El Yunque is a tropical paradise that's better to visit with a cagoule and waterproof footwear just in case you get soaked in one of the rainiest places in the world. Your lungs are expanded on this route due to the pure oxygen that emanates from the trees, where a wide variety of native species hide and many are in danger of extinction such as the 'cotorra de Puerto Rico' (a Puerto Rican Parrot) or the 'coquis' (coqui) tree frog. The most curious thing about this park is that it contains four different forests depending on the altitude, with more than 240 species of trees. You can hire a guide for your visit at the entrance and prior permission is required to camp in the forest.
Bosque Estatal de Maricao (Maricao State Forest)
The 'Monte del Estado' (The State Mountain) and its thousands of native plants and bird species will leave you gobsmacked.
Puerto Rican exoticism.
A visit to the exotic 'Bosque Estatal de Maricao' is well worth the two-hour journey that it takes inland from San Juan, where you'll find the origins of the coffee plantations and the indigenous tribes of the west. The 'Monte del Estado' (State Mountain) is in Maricao and it stands raised in the middle of the forest, watching over more than a thousand native plants and 60 species of birds and is considered as one of the forests in Puerto Rico with the greatest diversity. Interestingly, on the accessible route of the forest, you'll find the remains of a 'Casa de Piedra' (stone house) y 'Torre de Piedra' (stone tower) that were probably built at the beginning of the 20th century but all that's left nowadays are their remains since they were abandoned. The clearings between the tall trees allow the impressive view of the village from the top of the forest. This place is the epicentre of ornithological sightings and self-guided excursions. It’s in your interest to start the descent before it starts to get dark.
Playa Escambron (Escambron Beach)
In this Benidorm of the Caribbean, you'll find the most traditional family parties in of all San Juan.
Days of sand and sun.
The custom among Puerto Rican families is to take their own 'cool box' (or refrigerator) with enough of food and drink to spend a day at the beach. It's most likely that they’ll also carry their own music and that they'll spend hours singing, drinking and dancing. If you want to be part of this party, you can't miss 'Playa Escambron' near Old San Juan. Among its distinctive features, are its picturesque marine life and extraordinary reefs that are perfect for lovers of diving, underwater photography and snorkelling. It's also an attraction for young children, who can watch the different colours of fish that are almost by the shore, although you have to be careful with the sea urchins.
Bosque Seco de Guánica (The Guánica Dry Forest)
A tropical forest of great geological wealth and very peculiar flora and fauna. Enchanting.
Protected by UNESCO.
The Guanica State Forest was protected as an Unesco Biosphere Reserve since the 1980s, although it was already recognized in 1919 for its value as an example of a tropical xerophytic forest. Despite its landscape which is less lush than other tropical forests, this natural kernel has been subject to many scientific researches due to its geological wealth, as well as its peculiar flora and fauna, which is characterized by all kinds of cactus. To get to the 'Bosque Seco de Guánica', you can hire the services of a local agency that takes you from San Juan to the region of Guánica, which is located southwest of Puerto Rico, right at the other end of the island. It's in your interest to wear comfortable footwear and to take enough food and water on this excursion since you'll be under the sun in a forest of more than 4,400 hectares and you won't find any kiosks along the way.
Laguna del Condado (Condado Lagoon)
Outdoor sports, leisure activities and its outdoor film screenings are not to be missed.
Paddle surf.
One of the places where you can practice the original sport of paddle surfing or 'surf de remo' (which consists of gliding over the water with the push of a long single paddle while you're standing on a surfboard), is the 'Laguna del Condado', and is situated in the 'Parque Nacional' (National Park) named 'El Parque Nacional de la Laguna del Condado'. It's one of San Juan's main places for outdoor sport and leisure with large green areas, guided routes of native fauna and flora, and aquatic activities such as kayaking. You can coincide your visit with the athletes' training sessions of the Canoeing and Kayaking Federation of Puerto Rico, or if you go on the second and fourth Saturday of the month, you can go to the outdoor film screening during the 'Cine Verde del Estuario' (The Estuary's Green Cinema) season. It's best to take your own chair or mat so that you can sit under the moonlight and enjoy the film.
Parque de las Palomas (Pigeon Park)
You don't like pigeons very much? Then don’t go. If this is not the case, you should go because the little ones of the family will thank you.
A break for the kids.
If you're travelling with children and they get bored of visiting monument after monument, you can take a break in the 'Parque de las Palomas' (not suitable for allergy sufferers or phobics), which is flocked by hundreds of these birds. It's located in the area of Old San Juan, next to the 'Capilla del Cristo' with a view of the Bay. The custom is to buy a bag of corn somewhere nearby and to spend a pleasant morning in the shade of the trees or seated on a bench, where the mass of pigeons will come to feed. You have to be careful if you want to feed them by hand because they peck without any hesitation, and also be careful with scaring them in mid-flight because they tend to do their droppings over you. It’s believed that the 'Parque de las Palomas' was originally part of the 18th century defensive fort of which little remains nowadays.
Isla Palomino (Palomino Island)

The triumph of the dollar over nature makes the heavenly 'Isla Palomino' a semi-private islet and is occupied by the luxurious 'El Conquistador Hotel & Casino' (The Conqueror Hotel & Casino), which is located facing the coast of Fajardo and reserved for its guests or visitors who come by boat to spend a few hours. Puerto Rico's first natural charm.
Each year, more than 150,000 people visit this extraordinary archaeological landscape of the 'Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy', which is a formation of stalactites and stalagmites with more than 45 million years of being eroded into shape by rains and winds. This excursion will transform you into a real Indiana Jones through the tunnels and passages and with a guide who explains both the geological formations and the suspicions that the pre-Hispanic Taíno tribes already knew, as they explored these caves. Considered as the first natural charm of Puerto Rico, it is said to be one of the largest cave systems in the Western Hemisphere, with formations that look like giant mushrooms, water columns, fossilized quartz and the famous 'Sumidero Tres Pueblos': an underground Cliff that's closed off by the mighty Camuy River in the background. For a light brunch surrounded by young and friendly bohemian people, the Abracadabra is your cafeteria. The pancakes at Abracadabra, covered with pieces of toasted fruit on top of cream are for ordering one coffee after another. If you're tired of typical Caribbean food delights and you feel like a change, you can make a getaway to the Ali Babá Turkish restaurant which is located in Condado. As its name suggests, you'll not see any beans or the characeristic fried green bananas here, but a whole Eastern variety of food. As well as its extensive menu, the Ali Baba is known for its exquisite customer service. As a good Turkish restaurant, most of the dishes are prepared with lamb, but you'll also find the classic falafel, starters of hummus and pita bread or chutney, as well as the perfect mixed grill to share. Keep in mind that the Ali Babá closes on Mondays and opens every other day from four o'clock in the afternoon only, so it's not an option if you want to eat earlier.

The rectangular dishes painted with balsamic vinegar as if they were canvases, already indicate trendy and designer taste, and that's just what you'll find at the Rosalia International Cuisine & Tapas restaurant. Each dish is presented as it would be in a competition, with ribs in the shape of a pyramid, desserts turned into the shape of swans or potato purée that seem like encrypted messages with the decoration of the spices. The customers speak wonders of the selection of wines that the restaurant offers as well as the starters, side dishes and main dishes of both meat and fish; the 'filet mignon' (tenderloin) is particularly special. For those with a sweet tooth, it's worth taking your time to choose between the wide selection of desserts, but the 'créme brûlée de chocolate blanco' (white chocolate créme brûlée) is highly recommended.

At first glance, it seems like just a casual restaurant, but it has great culinary quality. Among the dishes, you can’t miss the "mofongo", which is a speciality of fried green banana with spices, sometimes filled with meat or fish, although there's a vegetarian version too. If what you want to enjoy is a cocktail with something to nibble on, you can ask for their two-for-one offer on the best ‘mojitos’ around (a rum based drink); enjoy them outdoors in the open terrace which usually fills up with people as the sun sets. Stuffed 'fajitas', beans, octopus tacos and fillets of meat are other delicacies that you can't miss.

A romantic dinner or a special celebration deserves an idyllic setting and this place is the Marmalade Restaurant & Wine Bar, located in Old San Juan and one of the top ten places to eat out in Puerto Rico. It goes without saying that the signature cuisine and award winning presentation/service is priced accordingly and some of the dishes are not suitable if you are looking for large quantities. But if you're looking for a place with charm and trendy decor, here you can try tasty dishes and an infinite variety of internationally influenced vegetarian recipes. Curiously, in the Marmalade Restaurant & Wine Bar, you'll find the Puerto Rican version of paella and cured Iberian ham with strong Asturian cheese, or their own version of homemade Sicilian style gnocchi and swordfish; all that washed down with a menu of the best imported wines.

Film buffs will find a perfect proposal of leisure in the Fine Arts Cinema complex, located at 'avenida Ponce de León' (Ponce de León Avenue). The most interesting thing about this complex is a curious custom among spectators: they buy wine or beer and sushi at the entrance and sit in the cinema with their dish to see the movie while they dine. For cinema lovers who can't stand the sound of crunchy popcorn and soft drinks, you can try your luck with this new form of 'film buff cuisine' entertainment. For those who love to get up very early, take a boat ride and wait in silence for a fish to bite the hook, the proposed programme by Peacock Bass and Tarpon Tours, is the perfect plan. Captain Paco Méndez is known in San Juan for renting his experienced fishing services to those who want to enjoy an alternative leisure activity. It usually leaves at six in the morning (although there is also the possibility of arranging nocturnal fishing tours), and the fishing takes place in the Puerto Rican lakes, with similar aquatic species that you would find in the Amazon. One of the world's largest radio telescopes is 50 years old and it’s located at the 'Observatorio de Arecibo', where it has been deciphering the mysteries of the galaxies since 1963. Its visitor centre receives more than 100,000 spectators a year and if you travel with children, or the world of astronomy interests you, this place will not leave you indifferent. The audio-visual room projects an explanatory video where the basic principles of astronomical investigations relating to atmospheric science are explained and carried out in this place, showing a typical day of scientific work with the giant, 305 metre-diameter radio telescope. The centre also contains exhibitions and panels that refer to the universe, which you are unable to see with your eyes and require advanced technology in order to be able to see further on.

After a tiring day of tourism or diving, there's nothing better than to relax and enjoy a pleasant evening on the 'Paseo de la Princesa', which is a central boulevard surrounded by trees and luxurious colonial residences and has become a place to walk for families, couples and groups of friends. This avenue was part of an urban restructuring development of the mid-19th century, with a landscape design that was meant for the senses: palm groves and lush gardens, fountains that cool the atmosphere, sculptures, kiosks, and at the back you'll find the exit to the sea at San Juan Bay. The 'Paseo de la Princesa' tends to accommodate street markets of artisans, artists, street musicians and small improvised theatre plays that entertain locals and tourists. In any of the refreshment stalls which liven up this avenue, you can ask for the traditional 'piragua', which is a delicious traditional ice-cream with exotic fruits.
