Faro and the beaches of the Algarve

Faro is the fascinating capital of the Algarve. When you visit its historic centre, you’ll discover the "cidade velha", the old town, which is encircled by ancient Moorish walls. Inside, you can wander through a labyrinth of cobbled streets that lead you to the beautiful Gothic cathedral, the Sé, and the elegant episcopal palace.

The Faro Maritime Museum is highly recommended for a visit, where you can discover Portugal’s fishing heritage and see impressive displays of fishing vessels, from ancient galleys to modern barges. You'll also find nautical instruments and scale models of different ships.

As summer approaches, the beaches of the Algarve become one of the main tourist attractions across Europe. Famous for their crystal-clear waters and golden sand, they will immerse you in a rich variety of stunning landscapes. Among the most beautiful are Praia do Camilo, Praia da Marinha, Praia da Falésia, and Praia do Barril.

All of these beaches also offer the chance to snorkel and discover the marine life, and you can take a boat trip to see rock formations like the impressive Benagil Cave.

Natural parks and islands

If there is a natural area in Faro that is worth visiting, it's the Ria Formosa Natural Park. This is a group of islands, lagoons and sandbanks near the coast of Faro, where you can take a boat along the various waterways to observe exotic birds such as flamingos and white herons. The shallow waters surrounding Armona Island are excellent for snorkelling as they are teeming with marine life, including beautiful seahorses. Specifically, you can visit Ilha Deserta, or Barreta Island, one of the most secluded of all those that form part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Between September and November, the spoonbill marshes of this "desert island" are home to a multitude of migratory birds.

Arab heritage and seafaring traditions

Faro is one of Portugal's best-loved coastal destinations as one of the sunniest cities in Europe, with nearly 300 days of sunshine a year. This naturally shapes the character of its people, who are warm and friendly and thrive on a rich cultural identity forged by their Roman and Arab past. Visitors are greeted by a tranquil atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of other tourist areas, in a place that preserves a traditional and simple way of life, where "everything is nearby" and life unfolds at a relaxed, Mediterranean pace.

Faro's cuisine is a true delight. The most typical dish of Algarve cuisine, and undoubtedly a star of Portuguese gastronomy, is the fish and seafood "cataplana"—a treat for even the most refined tastes. Another delicious dish and a testament to the Algarve's traditional fishing culture is fried ray, a fish drizzled with olive oil and garlic and typically served with potatoes.

Your trip isn’t complete unless you try the wines of the Algarve, new gems of the south of Portugal characterised by their freshness, Mediterranean notes and a smooth, aromatic profile thanks to the warm climate.
