The stunning landscape of the Ecuadorian Andes or Sierra will take your breath away. In this region you'll also find people who still speak Kichwa and Spanish and wear dark wool clothing, ponchos and embroidered blouses.
Another attraction of the Ecuadorian Sierra is undoubtedly the delicious food. You'll find numerous local markets where you can try traditional Ecuadorian dishes such as roast pork, chicken soup, fried fish, potatoes, maize, beans and fresh cheese.
The Ecuadorian Sierra stretches from the Colombian border in the north to the Peruvian border in the south. You'll also be able to explore cities like the capital, Quito, which has the best preserved colonial centre in the whole of South America. Other interesting cities to visit are Ibarra (known as the "white city"), Baños and Riobamba, the cultural heart of the Sierra. Further south are Cuenca, the city of rivers popular with American expats, and Loja, one of the gateways to Ecuador.
But the Andes are more than cities. They're imposing mountains, magnificent lakes and vast cloud forests - a true spectacle of nature that you won't want to miss.
The Ecuadorian Amazon, with its wildlife and adventure travel, is synonymous with exuberance.
The Amazon basin is located on the northern border with Colombia and ends on the southern border with Peru. You will be able to visit places such as the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve and the Yasuní National Park, as well as small communities in Oriente, such as Tena, Baeza, Cosanga, Puyo, Maca and Zamora. If what you like is adventure, these cities offer the possibility of accessing rivers for rafting or kayaking, observing small orchid reserves and hiking trails to see impressive waterfalls and the wildest life, such as in the Cayambe Ecological Reserve. The Ecuadorian Pacific coast has the country's most beautiful beaches, with long stretches of sand and waters that invite you to surf the magnificent waves.
Away from the sea, you can visit picturesque towns as well as both historic and modern cities, like Guayaquil, the country's main port and economic capital.
