Llevamos 80 años volando a Buenos Aires

El vuelo de Iberia, operado por un DC-4, tardó aproximadamente 36 horas en llegar a su destino

Iberia celebrates the 80th anniversary of its first flight between Madrid and Buenos Aires, a milestone that not only made the airline the first to connect the two cities by air, but also marked the beginning of the company’s history in the region, where it is now the leading airline for connectivity between Latin America and Europe.

The first flight took place on 22 September 1946 aboard a Douglas DC-4, which connected the two cities after approximately 36 hours of travel, with stopovers in Villa Cisneros, Natal and Rio de Janeiro before finally arriving in Buenos Aires. At the time, a one-way ticket cost 11,435 pesetas, while a return ticket cost 20,583 pesetas. Similarly, checking in a suitcase cost 114.35 pesetas. Meanwhile, the flight from Buenos Aires to Madrid cost 3,381 Argentine pesos, while a return ticket cost 6,086 pesos.

Argentina at the heart of the Flight Plan 2030

Argentina remains one of Iberia’s largest markets in Latin America, with three daily flights, most of them operated by the A350, the largest aircraft in the fleet.

In fact, this year, during the summer months, Iberia operated up to four daily flights between Buenos Aires and Madrid in June, July and August, meeting the strong demand between the two countries. It is also worth highlighting that Argentina is one of the priority countries under Iberia’s Flight Plan 2030, the airline’s recently launched strategic plan aimed at consolidating business growth over the coming years.
